Ordered this exact car 2 weeks ago. I can't tell you how excited I am. I will enjoy it through you haha! I think it drove like a champ, I was so impressed! Awesome video
Loving that infotainment center. I have a 2019 RAV4 adventure and would have LOVED if Toyota had gone with something like this. Way to hit it out of the park Subaru ✌🏽
Happy 4 u, man. I wanted my wife to get that but she got suckered by the bells and whistles and the fancy “ Napa leather “ of the touring without the XT engine.
Very nice presentation on the Subaru Onyx, Joe. Obviously, there is a uniquely marvelous product to work with in the Subaru Onyx XT. However, if you were presenting a 1957 DeSoto, you would do it just as well. Your heart and mind are in your work, and we (your subscribers) are loyal and grateful not just for the technical aspects of your videos, but so much more importantly for the comfort which you give to us. You, in reality, are presenting us with a gentle and powerful humanity. This is something you may not even realize, but your subscribers get it. Switching our thoughts from the news, work and stresses of the day to viewing Raiti's Rides is soothing, fun and peacefully entertaining. When you tell us which nook or cranny to place our Reese's peanut butter cups into, it makes us feel good (We know you do not eat junk food, but that's not the point. Many of us don't, either. It is kind of a comfy cuddle.) Please keep sharing your thoughts with us. We, your subscribers, are better for it. What you do has powerful impact far beyond the fun and interesting information. This is something your subscribers understand- even those who verbalize disagreement about your conclusions. The technical things are fun. It is you who we need. Not everyone always agreed with Garrison Keillor or Paul Harvey. But "A Prairie Home Companion" and :The Rest of the Story" were hugely important comforts in millions of American's lives. So it is with Raiti's rides. Thank you, Joe. Robert Henry, M.D.
Hi Robert! WOW, I am floored! Thank you so much for that kind heart warming response. I am living the dream to be able to share my passion with everyone and have fun along the way. Thank you for being part of the Raiti's Rides Family!
Hi Joe--I have watched a number of your videos but have never left a comment before, but I just wanted to let you know that I think you do such a great job. You have a wonderful blend of enthusiasm balanced with really good information that we all need to know about a vehicle. Best of all, you are not a fan boy, and if there flaws to be pointed out, you have no problem going there. Keep up the great work--you are doing great and providing a wonderful service. I cannot imagine how much time and effort it must take to put these out, but thank you for all you do--it is greatly appreciated!
I just replaced my 2016 3.6R Outback with a 2020 Touring XT. What a huge difference in ride quality and road noise. There were some exterior items I didn’t care for (e.g. chrome roof racks and side mirrors,) but those things have been mitigated with replacement parts. I even changed out the grille for the Onyx version. If you’ve been thinking of buying a Subaru, stop by your dealer and test drive one.
Keith Walls that’s funny, I actually prefer the bits of painted silver trim on the racks to lessen a bit all that black cladding and on the mirrors and door handles as a bit of “jewelry” on an otherwise handsome but not stunning looking car but that’s just a personal preference. Haven’t driven one yet but sat in one for a bit last week and man that Touring interior is sumptuous for a Subie. We are on the slow track to replace our 2006 Tribeca with a Touring XT but will probably wait until next year when they’ve hopefully ironed out any issues that one could expect from a new car. Have you found the power and handling to be good for the type of car it is and any issues (or perks) with anything else that you’ve discovered as you’ve had it for a bit? As someone who is already used to a CVT (I’ve driven the Ascent but otherwise have very little experience) have you found it to be responsive and a good fit for the engine? Thanks!
Tpolerex I’ve had it since Sept. 30th, so not a real long time. Estimated 0-60 is 6.6 secs (Car and Driver.) I have not tested it yet because it just finished its break in period. As I said, it’s heads and shoulders above the old 6 cylinder. You owe it to yourself to go check it out at your favorite Subaru dealer. It handles really well, I have no issue with the CVT ( I didn’t with old one either.). Since this is the same engine as in the Ascent, it has better pickup since the vehicle is lighter. It’s no sports car, but for a “lifted wagon,” it’s pretty darned nice. Full disclosure- I replaced the OE Yokohama tires (which Yokohama doesn’t even sell in this size at tire dealers) and replaced them with Michelin Premier A/S tires.
Keith Walls cool, thanks! Yeah everything I’ve heard is that the OEM tires pretty much suck which is often the case with mfgr’s choices, I bet it makes a noticeable difference. Once that engine loosens up a bit you’ll see some even better performance- also, the learning algorithm with the transmission would be more responsive if “you drive it like you stole it” for a bit after you’ve broken in the engine, grabbing a couple of downshifts with the paddle shifters even in normal mode. What color did you get? I actually like this Subaru White, nice bit of metallic in it. Glad you are liking your ride! Thanks!
I’m liking the Outback, especially with the turbo. Subaru really paid attention to detail with the new version. Nice review Joe! Thanks! 👍🏻👍🏻🇺🇸 * according to Subaru’s website, the Onyx Edition doesn’t come with leather seats. It’s Star Tex water repellent material.
Raiti's Rides hey I’m about to get a new car and was wondering what you were thinking, outback premier with all the options or Forester sport with all the options, both 2020
Very beautiful!! I was never a fan of white, but when I turned into a Subaru owner I just love their white. The Onyx Edition would be the one I would select. And the XT is awesome for the Outback!! Great review Joe and awesome camera work Tom!!!
My wife turned it down. She was thinking of trading her ForesterXT but didn't see enough to make her want a new one. Interior seems pretty much the same as my 2016 Outback other than the the big screen. When you open the back door, it sure seems smaller than the Forester although on paper is supposed to be bigger. They put the Crosstrek taillights on the back but the only real improvement that I noticed was a lot less body roll on sharp curves. As for power, she said it seemed close to her ForesterXT but not faster.
Joe, bought one today, love it so far. Autumn Green Metallic with the Blackout rims, badging, and trim....stoked! Great review as always, keep up the great work!
Thanks Joe, for a great review of the Subaru Onyx. Would really like to see you test drive & review the Touring XT as that is what I’m thinking about for my next ride. Really enjoy your RU-vid channel, very informative and humorous at the same time. Thanks, A California fan.
Your channel is the best channel I've ever seen. u are very active very profesional very friendly and I very enjoy ure channel. you must have milion subscriber in this channel👍🏻you deserve it.
Still driving a 97 Outback Legacy. 185K miles. I will only drive a Subaru. :) But wow! The interior is GREAT. I especially love the 2020 Legacy Interior (higher trim, I think). I love Reese's Cups, so a few king size candies, would be perfect! Lol
Thanks for sharing that input based off your ownership experience! You have to take one of these 2020 Outbacks for a spin. Make sure to bring the candy! ;-)
Rati, I have been following news of thr Onyx from reviewers for a while. You captured most of the features of the Subaru with intelligent analysis (for the most part). Great dealer lot review, but left me wanting more off road footage and commentary.
Joe, nice meeting you today at Reeves Motor Sports! Its funny, I believe that the Outback in this video is the one I purchased from Reeves. Awesome car, I love it!
Hi Joe, Just an FYI on the Outback. The Cross bars are built in and fold across the roof rack system as standard on all trims. Keep up the great work. JK
Ricardo Juliet An hour after watching this review I test drove an XT Limited (no Onyx XT in stock). The engine performance was very strong, with a wide power spread. I was really surprised! It was also the first CVT I ever drove, and it never did anything to draw my attention...it was quite seamless. I REALLY liked the angle-adjustable headrests, a massive upgrade from ones that are fixed at a forward angle and become a massive pain in the neck on long drives! Another nice feature: the salesman said the Onyx XT has a full-size spare tire with an alloy rim matching what's on that car. How cool is that? The 18.5 gallon fuel tank is generous, too. A really really nice car, it has me thinking...
I purchased a new Outback in 2017. It had RAB and many other electrical problems from the start. I had it in the shop 10 times for repair. Went a total of 42 days without my car. It was a Lemon. Had to have it towed into the dealer no less than four times. Even the district service manager told me to contact Subaru Customer service to get a full refund, as they could not figure out what is wrong with the car. After months of being given the run around, Subaru customer service did not refund my money as they should have. I traded my car in, still under warranty, still not fixed. I lost over $14,000 because Subaru does not stand behind their cars. Toyota is looking better all the time.
@@RaitisRides Thanks, and love your high energy, delivery levels! PS...has been a few months since my first comment. We decided...the Onyx was at the price point we could bear. And, apparently, reviewers consider it a better value, vs competition'. We may pull a trailer, so the turbo charged option seemed to be the wise move. And, it kicks nicely. Also have a 4th gen Prius...another model that has matured past "utility knife" charisma-status! ...LOL.
Darrell Borland how is cabin noise on the highway? I am concerned about the lack of acoustic glass on the driver and passenger side etc. I'm hoping it isn't noisy, I have one on order
Ronnie Zimmerman honestly, anything can be a “sport utility vehicle” it’s the only vague car class. A minivan could be a sport utility if it was designed to be so.
Completely agree regarding the steering feedback on the Outback in both the previous gen (2017) and the current gen (2020+). They are really tight cars for being a lifted wagon. I wonder about the breathability of the sportex material during the warmer months. It seems like a great option for active folks, but it could be hot as heck and a sweaty experience.
Call it generic, boring, not exciting or whatever you want to, but there is no denying the fit and finish of this new Outback, Forester and the new Legacy outweighs pretty much any other vehicle in their respective class, including Camry and RAV-4. Yes I just said that. Not a single cheap end, no loose knots and rubbers. Really great build quality.
I purchased a new Outback , it had RAB and many electrical problems from the start. After only a couple of months I had the car in the deanship for repairs several times. The dealer only deleted the PC history, did nothing to fix the problem, and does not supply the needed paperwork to prove I was there. This practice is still going on today. The service tech brags, "as long as I work here, no one will ever qualify for Lemon Law protection " Problems got MUCH worse. Full engine shut down, In for repair 10 + times, towed in 4 times. After contacting Subaru customers support, they said because the dealer refused to supply paperwork for your visits, they refused to refund my money for the Lemon the sold me. Car was traded in, because it would not work, still under warranty, still not fixed because they didn't know how to fix it. Lost well over $14,000 because Subaru does not stand behind their cars, or the customer. This is where Subaru will respond asking me to contact them, have Many Many times, they will not call back, will not follow the law.
Instead of Twinkies or King sized Snickers... what about some Sonic chili dogs? haha! I noticed on this video that you said this Outback is your personal favorite. I got to test drive one and the turbo/ecu could use a bit of a tune. Hopefully Cobb Tuning does something so we can take advantage of it all!
Nice video. Subaru has nice color options for Crosstrek. However, color options for Outback are very poor. Perhaps they will consider adding fun color especially for Onyx XT ?
I agree that Subaru should've blacked out the window trim to match the Onyx blacked out theme. It's mismatched with that chrome. I'm gonna wait 2 yrs to get a pre-owned one.
Personally it's a fantastic looking car & the whole 9 yards. Man every time u upload a Subaru on beloved Raitis Rides ❤ I always look back in my mind about the 2020 Subaru WRX STI World Rally Blue with those menacing Rims 🙏🏼🙏🏼❤❤. Would love to see a 2020 Subaru Impreza 1 day. Thanks Joe.
Joe, great review as always. I really value your opinion on how you feel the car handles. I've been looking and test driving vehicles to replace my '18 WRX so I can go explore, road trip & camp with my wife, son & Malinois. Forester, RAV4 TRD, 4Runner TRD Off Road, Outback XT. I think this Outback just moved into first place. Your thoughts?
Great review!👍 I'm not sure if I should go for a family suv or this Outback. I really like the lifted wagon idea, but I'm wondering if its as good for going long trips and carrying lots of stuff than a midsize suv.
With the recent Subaru Crosstreks and foresters recalls, should we be concerned about Outback models too? I really want to buy my wife a Subaru but need something reliable for our newborn.
Hey Joe- Luckily very friendly with my dealer so I got to test drive the Touring XT just for the sake of it and very much enjoyed that post 2800 RPM acceleration👍🏼 You’re definitely onto something using candy bars as a unit of measure for storage spots😜 Love it👌🏼 and I have the Dental bills to prove it😆
Subaru makes a lot of their Subaru SUVs like the OUTBACK with the ONYX EDITION + XT on the OUTBACK ONYX EDITION I would probably be getting the SUBARU OUTBACK ONYX XT Edition if I was able to get the SUBARU OUTBACK ONYX XT
Be honest...is the motor good enough to where you can forget that it's a CVT? Drives me crazy when such good cars are stuck with CVTs, however it's a reality we live in now...
loving this vehicle and the fact its a raised wagon. l miss my 2003 Volvo XC 70. Good times....and Ford Explorer thats how you do an infotainment system...not that outrageous tablet on the dash Tesla type failed attempt.
I think a white Outback with black wheels looks great. You can't get the black wheels on the Touring (which I'll be getting early next year), but the Touring's wheels are designed exactly like the Onyx's black wheels (except for the coloring). I doubt if a dealer will swap the wheels for me, so I'll just get the Touring's powder-coated. 🙂
I will wait until this summer to get one of these. It will then be an outgoing model with 0% or 0.5% interest rate. I have already tested drive it and it is a power house.
Great car except for a giant problem with the auto engine “cut off” at stops. It resets to on every time you get in, and it takes several iterations to turn it off (why couldn’t subaru just make a one touch “off” button for this!).
To me, the XT stands for Xtra Terrain + is AT4X on the GMC CANYON AT4X stands for All Terrain 4 Xtra? Anyways, what's the price point for a SUBARU OUTBACK XT ONYX Edition no matter where I go, I ALWAYS see the SUBARU OUTBACK AWD. Does the SUBARU OUTBACK XT Onyx edition have an AWD system?
I would trade those ridiculous paddle shifters and "manual" mode for a heated steering wheel in a heartbeat. (The Touring trim doesn't have the dual mode x-mode, so forget it.)
Hi Joe, Another awesome review. I would like your opinion. I'm thinking about selling my '18 WRX and getting either a Forester or Outback XT. I had a '17 Forester XT I unfortunately totalled. I would use it as a daily for myself and a 60 lb. obedient Belgian Malinois to commute to my veterinary clinic. I like to go camping, hiking, ski and would like to explore more off-road, not rock crawling. I live in hot AZ and have been exploring northern Arizona to enjoy the cooler climate. I have a wife, son & dog that would join me. I was thinking Outback XT Onyx or Forester. Possibly looking at an RDX A-spec. All things considered, i.e., value, reliability, mpg, practicality, etc, what would you highly recommend?
This vehicle makes buying a Legacy pretty much pointless. It drives like a (may be even better) car, and has far more practicality and all season capability than any sedan could ever dream of.
I couldn’t go with a turbo engine. So the only Subaru I would consider or other wagon is the 2014 Outback with the 3.6 and the 5 speed auto or the 2014 Honda Accord Crosstour. I want more cargo capacity without the SUV stupidity.
Love this car/wagon.... but when you rev it up it sounds so lame... like a sewing machine. And you are 1000 percent correct.. it needs ventilated seats - especially here in Florida.
Joe, I have 2 questions. I have been reading reviews on Subaru’s 2005 (?) turbo charged engine and they have not been very popular. Is their new turbo charged engine any better? Second in your opinion what (if any) are the benifts of the push button ignition vs. keyed?
No way would I buy this. The start stop has to be turned off everytime the car is started and you have to go through that horrible touch screen. My 2017 3.6R is my 3rd and will be my last outback if those don't change.
There we go Joe this time I heard the mpg's that good coz no matter how fence a car can b it's very important for us know alot of details concerning that car good job man
