I own this exact vehicle and I love it. The acceleration is quite spirited despite 184 hp. The 221 pound feet of torque makes all the difference. It has much better styling (in my humble opinion) than either the RAV4 or the Honda CR-V. The handling is excellent and it's loaded with tech; much more than was discussed in this video.
How has the car been treating you these past 2 years? I'm in the market to get a used one for the exact reasons that you listed. I'm trying to keep it under 30k miles, if possible. Any issues that you've had? Do you still recommend it?
Great review. I have a 21 Tiguan and I love it. The Mazda X5 felt like a poor man's Cadillac. The CRV felt like an outdated 2015 and the RAV4 felt like a concept unfinished teenager's car. This felt right. It is a bit slow but it's got enough spunk and great styling.
In 2019, at the NY Autoshow (the good old days), I was down to this (no 3rd row) and Forester Touring. Chose the Subaru and have been satisfied. Only downside, on highway runs through Pennsy at speed, the interior road noise is pronounced, but offset by $0 maintenance so far other than oil changes. Thanks Joe, great job Lori!
I have a 2020 Tiguan r-line black in black. All black with tinted windows plus wheel spacers this SUV is menacing looking. You did not mention it but this R line does have a sport mode for the transmission. It does make it quicker. The turbo motor in this SUV is the tried and true 2.0 available in Audi and the GTI. The dealers will tune it to GTI power if you want and it is under warranty.Looks wise this SUV cannot be beat especially in the all black version.
I’m obsessed with mine! I bought mine in May. I got white and it looks awesome with the black wheels and the few black touches. The engine does run good Even though he said it isn’t the fastest, it’s fast enough and has a nice pick up. Gotta love the turbo. It’s a smooth smooth ride. The door inside on mine looks a lot better then on this one. I don’t know why but it’s more black not that grey look. I get so many compliments my Tiguan. Thought I’d like a dark color but that white and black is clean. One thing I’m gonna do is get it the roof around the panoramic sunroof done in black since my friend does wraps so it will be less expensive the painting it and it will just be around the the edge so the roof will look all black.I keep the third row down and it just looks like a massive back storage since the back material is a thick cover that goes over the whole back and over the top of the back two seats so you would never know it was two seat under there. In this video it isn’t showing the thick cover that lays over it with big groves for putting stuff back there and the grooves keep things from sliding around. And it comes with a top cover that pulls out like a soft shelf above the back storage you can put something light weight on top or use it to over whatever stuff you have in the back it’s super unique. The back he showed is lacking what it comes with which to me is an awesome feature. And the back is not heavy to lift there is a bar on the right to grab and pull down too so misleading. Once the back is popped I lift it with one finger and that bar keeps you from putting hand prints on the back when pulling it down. Best Vehicle I have ever purchased. My second “small Suv” but it’s so roomy to me it is so roomy I can’t call it but an SUV. This guy sucks at reviewing the car or maybe he left out things like the back storage features for other reasons but it’s important so should have been mentioned.
I bought mine without the 3rd row because I got the 4motion r line. The car is even faster than the one tested on this video and I did tuned the car its making more hp and torque.
I bought the same white/on black 2020 R-Line model last Oct. I put a amp and 2 Twelves where the 3rd row seats are folded.😁 I love Joe's videos, but am surprised he's spreading misinformation about the R-Line model having only 1 driving mode.🙄🤦🏾♂️🤷🏾♂️
Why doesn't VW offer the 235 HP engine option on the R-Line is beyond me. They give us this Gimped Engine, while in other world markets, the more powerful engine is offered. I don't care that they may be concerned that a more powerful Tiguan may take sales away from Audi, because that doesn't happen with other VW models.
Tiguan R is coming to the US in 2022. Golf R engine 4.9 0-60. SUVs sell like hot cakes and VW knows it, result we are getting what people want. Be patient.
I don't care if the 0-60 isn't that good kind of, because it won't be to sensitive to handle. It's all calm and it takes its time if some certain passengers of vehicles don't like the feel of harsh jumps.
I have a 21 rline black front wheel drive Tiguan. I love it! And it has more power than my 19 Tiguan! This thing from a stop will smoke the tires! Why he says it wont win any drag races cuz mine only lost by a car length to a Subaru WRX. The exhaust has a nice growl too. Must be the all wheel drive model. It gets lots of looks and even from Rover drivers. VW hit a home run with this one!
I have the 2019 Tiguan and the acceleration is the same. Not that fast and definitely won’t win any races. The body is nice on the 2022 R-line, but that’s about it. Thanks for the review.
Yep I had one too! It was fine for me and I didn’t expect it to be fast. I would buy a mustang for that. The Tiguan took me across country comfortably several times. And it swallowed all my crap really well. The R-Line looks nice as an appearance package
Funny - didn't see this till now, just picked up our used 2018 Tiguan SEL Premium R-Line this past Saturday. It is for the wife, she had a 2012 Hyundai Sonata Limited which she loved--but we gave it to our daughter who is in college and needed a car. We looked at the mid-sized SUVs for 3 weeks, a couple things going into the process, we knew we did not want a CVT, wanted something with a larger sunroof. Also - my mom has a 2018 RAV4 for sale with 27000 miles, so we looked at it, used it to drive around to compare it with other SUVs we were testing. The Audi Q3 was a contender for the features and quality, but it was simply too small and no storage features in the interior. The RAV4 was nice, but that it - just nice. The sunroof was small, it had some storage features, but pretty lame. Acceleration was decent, but comparing it to the Audi Q3 and the Tiguans we drove, they were fairly similar. We ended up finding the Premium R-line with the 20inch rims and the panoramic dash. The quality feel of the Tiguan is unmatched to the RAV4, etc. it is an upscale selection, hand-down! The crazy thing is, the guy we bought it from is a car buff, has a GolfR and got the Tiguan. He installed seat covers, weather tech car mats before he drove it and never ate in it - if I didn't tell anyone - you'd think it was brand new. Needless to say, the wife loves her new Tiguan. It pretty much matches your review here. Very nice/funny review!!
Great vehicle so far. We went from a Wrangler to Tiguan bc of a car accident. I do miss my Wrangler but this vehicle is "fancy" compared to my beloved Wrangler. I do plan on going back to Wrangler but my R-line Tiguan is beautiful and handles well. It also has excellent safety ratings. Great review so thank you!
Great video as usual. But Joe, the Tiguan SE R Line does have 2 driving modes. You have standard drive “D” and sport mode “S”, unless something changed from 2020. In sport mode, the engine feels a lot more responsive than the standard. You’ll be able to tell the difference immediately. However, I still think the Tiguan could use another engine option like they offer in Europe, especially for the R-Line models.
Could the flat black be a design element from the Audi Allroads and the VW Alltracks cladding? As far as power, people who buy in this segment are not looking at flooring it or speed racing plus 221lb ft of torque isn’t bad
I'm tempted to buy one but I'm hooked on the hyundai Tucson, it's cheaper and has alot more then this vehicle aswell as being more reliable and having a longer warranty
@@triggerxx9760 maybe that is the case for US models, but not here. beside that, VW engines are quite robust most of the time - but there is alot of technical failure or some parts used just don´t last long enough. Same goes for Audi unfortunately and i must know because i drive one and have family members that work at porsche - so whenever i go there i see the same cars with the very same problems. their mechanics often tell me which models are total garbage and that they hate working on certain parts because they fail frequently. you would think that common failures on parts are drastically reduced over the last 20 years by perfecting the materials used etc - but no, this is not the culture we have: it is japanese culture. they have a product and when the product works, they refine it year by year and it may be used for decades. this way at some point the part is so good that you hardly have to worry about it breaking at any point (for instance a good old V6 toyota engine, that STILL is being produced but got to this level of perfection by making it better year by year). european/american car makers create new engines, transmissions, tech gadgets etc almost every year and then test them on the customer. but hey, it seems to be normal to pay 60.000 dollars for a premium brand only to find out it spends more time at the mechanics than in your own driveway.
Honestly I don't think it's quite big enough to have a practical 3rd row seat. I'd rather do without it for some extra space and weight savings. If I wanted a 3rd row I'd probably step up to the Atlas.
I just sold my 2019 Tiguan. To be honest it was wonderful for my 3 little nieces and nephews. You are correct though, the only adult I could get back there was my tiny grandma because the 2nd row bench will slide forward 6”. I also had a 15 year old nephew who loves sitting back there sideways with his legs up on the seat like he was on a bed. The seat was better than nothing but you obviously don’t put large people back there: it’s great for trips under half an hour. But yea it’s a squeeze for most but for the segment it’s kind of a gimmick. Most people I know that have one have said that the seat is great in emergencies. Again better than nothing in many cases. Most people who plan to haul more than 5 people have sense enough to buy the larger offering or just look elsewhere. But VW gets bragging rights here.
Almost went with one of these. Ended up ordering a Subaru Forester Sport though. Better safety tech for the money, awesome headlights, great visibility out of the cabin, and all the ground clearance I need. These still look sharp on the outside but I think they are a little too plain on the inside. Could really use a splash of color in there.
Great review as usual Joe. You know what, I knew why car makers put the rear wiper at the bottom of the rear window, because the arch that wiper make or that half circle, will be wider at the bottom where the driver need the clear view. It wont be useful if the clean part of the glass on the top of the rear window. Thanks for time Joe.

Tiguan is too big/heavy for it’s own good. I have 2018 S 4motion (without the third row). As he said it’s slow. And I agree with that assessment. I bought it because it is a no-nonsense well put together car. Plus it came with 6 year transferable warranty. Even after 4 years no rattling or fluttering sounds. My only suggestion is don’t take the 3rd row seat.
Joe, never mix the cool ranch with the nacho cheese Doritos 🤣 Just bought a 2021 Pure White VW Tiguan 2.0T SE R-line Black Edition 4motion with the 3rd row. Love it, but I’ll never use the 3rd row. MSRP was $34,595, but after incentives, I paid $28,000. Those deals ended July 1st. Now there are absolutely no incentives on any of their models.
Germans love the Tiguan, Scotty hates it, as a German I like it but unfortunately the Car is expensive in Germany, the Asian brands are also good and a lot cheaper as the Tiguan.
Great review …. Just a feedback when it comes to showing Panoramic sunroof in your video … you could wait showing us until it extend to the fullest …. 🙂
Several zonks for this car. It's not an SEL Premium so the headlights suck and no digital dash. It's not an actual R with the higher hp because the US doesn't get them. It's not the newer updated model because they aren't out yet.
JJ ~ 0 to 60 in 9 seconds? my lawn mower runs faster than that, but it's German so it'll probably break down within the first month of ownership lol, at least the fit & finish in VW's is usually super good, I do like its styling better than the CR-V & RAV4, I'll keep watching since I'm your online buddy. . . heck yeah them pedals are brilliant. unless the kids are 8 foot tall like JOE hahahaha, for that red headed step child lol. I'd see a guy about getting the 3rd row deleted & make the mid row like limo seating w/ ventilation - yeah baby that's how tony designs SUV's. one thing I do know about VW's you feel the car/SUV - feedback is great, tight driving if that makes sense. they drive sharp & not sloppy. hey how did you get so lucky & found a sweet, smart, fit, good looking gal like Lori? you guys are the YT team number 1 rated by tony
Joe!!! You're reviews are the best man...you're channel is my favourite. However, I would like to see "Raiti's Rides-style" car comparison videos on the channel....god bless you...keep it up!!
Can we "zonk" the horsepower on that? I don't understand why VW creating the R-Line didn't think it be a good idea to boost the horsepower. If I'm paying more, then I want more horsepower. LOL
Well yeah, it's a mid-size SUV that takes unleaded, not a performance vehicle lol. I have the 2021 R-Line Premium, much better driving experience! same engine platform but you at least have a driving mode selector that I leave on sport for better throttle response.
@@schwinn04 This isn't a mid size SUV it's a compact. The other compacts have better acceleration in the same class. In addition, the previous generation Tiguan had more power albeit with less torque. Volkswagen needs to give this SUV at least 230hp because at 4100 pounds, 184hp just isn't enough.
@@IamJay02 As you said “Imagine” well I don’t have too, I drive it, power is good enough for me & my family. Took a 7hr trip with 3 adults & 2 children(1 in the 3rd row) plus luggage, car was fine.
@I am Jay I think you have a valid point based on the numbers alone. Numbers don't lie. I mean, I drive a 3440 pound Lexus with a V6 230 hp which I find to be ample with just my wife and I and a few items in the trunk. The Tiguan is a compact "SUV" that's already 660 pounds heavier than my car, and when you factor in passengers alone, there's no way 184hp is enough. Then again, what do I know? I am basing everything from what I imagine after all! ;-)
@@ishmaelshakurworldwide2380 well considering we traded in our 2020 Volvo XC90 T5@5k pds with 250hp for this car, I guess you’re right. I’m just imagining things too.
They're cheaper, less maintenance, supposedly better fuel economy, and the target demographic for vehicles with CVTs isn't likely to care that it has one. There's a reason CVTs are never found in sports cars.
Love the look of this SUV, but won’t even consider it with a 9sec 0-60. They could at least put the GTI motor in this SUV. This SUV brings down the R name.
I have a black se-r 4 motion and I love it. Only thing I don’t like is the power everywhere I got people always says it looks fast, is it? Good thing is apr makes a tune for it
