Is The 2023 Kawasaki Vulcan Vaquero Just a CHEAP Harley?

Kawasaki Vulcan Vaquero is a great long-haul cruiser for those of you who prefer function over form and could not care less about riding around on a shiny over-priced and over-engineered Harley.
If you ask me, once you put down a couple thousand miles on your cruiser and the novelty wears off and you realize you shouldn’t have financed $40,000 dollars on your maxed out credit card, then you wish you had saved all that money and gone with an equally fun to ride cruiser from Kawasaki.

It's not a "cheap Harley", it's a good Kawasaki...

It’s really just a play on the word. I mean it as in a bike that “costs” less than a Harley. But that’s essentially what we explore in the video. Is it really cheaper or CHEAPER.

It’s a Kawasaki bagger. The Vaquero msrp is $19,099 and a Road Glide is $21,999. Only a difference of $2,900 which could just be put towards personalizing the Kawasaki. Just choose your disease. 😂

I bought a 21' almost 2yrs ago new. It'll chirp the rear tire speed shifting on the highway and lift the front end. Not bad for a bike I paid 18k for, which was thousands less than a comparable HD or Indian. I did put a slightly taller windshield on it, about 4-5" to reduce buffeting.
@johnmorgan9068

I have the same bike, know it’s a little clunkier than the modern HD and Indian but much cheaper and I like the styling better. Done some simple mods: 11inch windscreen, Ivan tune, Freedom Performance exhaust, Eagle Lights LED headlight swap, I listen to tunes through my Garmin Bluetoothed from my phone. Side opening cases are fine since I use fitted liners when I travel anyway.

At this Kawasaki, nothing needs to be changed. Just follow the service at the authorized Kawasaki dealer and have fun. Most people who work on their motorcycles screw them up. If you still want to look for motorcycle oil, accessories, and equipment, then I recommend the German pages of ‘Louis-Motorrad Shop’ and ‘Polo-Motorrad’. In Germany, this Kawasaki was sold until 2014 as ‘KAWASAKI VN 1700 VOYAGER CUSTOM’. Maybe this information will help you.”

I've been riding for nearly 30 years now. Not a bike snob, I can usually find the merits for any bike. I owned and rode 60k miles on a Vaquero and never had a mechanical or electrical problem with the bike. I personally do think they need an update, It's been the same bike since 2011 without any type of noteworthy update except the linked braking. They need more manufacturer options as well. The sound system, in fact the entire dash, is severely outdated. The only real problem I had with the bike was it's lack of character and horrible lean angle. Ivan's flash woke it up, but even an aftermarket exhaust couldn't fix it's lack of character. It's a super solid bike for people who want to put carefree miles on. As an aside, the true HP and TQ numbers are 75 hp and 99 tq on the dyno. There's not a whole lot you can do to increase those numbers. You can get it up to 90 hp and 115 tq with exhaust, an intake mod and a flash, but there is no cam chest kit or big bore kits available on the consumer market if anywhere. I'm getting a little long in the tooth for a 950lb wet weight bike so decided to step down in size to a HD Street Bob 107. I have 2 of those now. One is a tastefully modified daily pushing 130 hp and 145 tq. My other one is a weekend machine pushing 175 hp and 190 tq with a turbo. I can honestly say that my daily is bulletproof. I've added some Villain2Hero bags and a Road Warrior fairing on top of my performance mods and have never had an issue with multiple 3000+ mile trips. The other positive is that it has a ton of character. It sounds absolutely amazing under load and has a nice deep rumble at idle. It's torquey, but manageable even when it's raining and I'm navigating wet roads in more urban areas. I've done all the work myself from engine, cams, primary, bars, wiring and even paint. Also, you're saving well more than 4k at todays market. You can readily find an unused, but new Vaquero for well less than MSRP. You aren't finding a Road Glide sold under or even at MSRP. Usually 3-4k over + shipping etc.

I didn't consider "any other" bike when I bought my Voyager. I love the 1700cc (103.7 cubic inch, might as well call it a 104) engine and it sounds more like a race tuned Vtwin rather than an engine that is loud and clunky. Yes, I did the Ivan tune and substantially increased the HP and Torque to keep up with the bikes out there with larger engines. I love the fact that with the Kawasaki, you get reliability and longevity. "Follow your heart, not the crowd"

I ride strictly Honda or Suzuki. I purposely avoid Harley Davidson because of the image and their extreme attitude riders. The run of the mill Harley guys are easy to get along with But that hard-core nothing but a Harley guy is nothing but obnoxious. I will add I dislike the extreme sport bike rider as well and avoid contact with them also. It would be nice if progressive insurance would have motorcycle shows again and we can go try some of these bikes out. I’d like to ride a couple of the new Harley Davidsons. I feel like I need to say that I do not ride cruisers of any make. I have reached 64 years of age and maybe a cruiser would be a lot more comfortable for me.

Informative video. 2009 Kawasaki Vulcan 900 here. The Vulcan is a sweet intermediate cruiser (sadly lacking a 6th gear) and whose sweet range is 50-65mph. Would consider moving up to the Vaquero for longer highway trips (and less high speed buzz!) but the 250lb weight difference is a deal breaker for me at 74yo. Even the 900 (at 625lbs) is a chore to drive in heavy city traffic, while the Vaq, at some 900+lbs must be a slow torture. A gentle Suggestion: I do find your constant emphatic hand waving to be distracting and mildly irritating. Reminds me of Doug Demure who I can no longer stand listening to for more than 30 seconds.

I wish Kawasaki would put the motor in a lean Vulcan. aka... better than a Harley Breakout
@breedlofam
@breedlofam 8 месяцев назад
Won't happen and even if it did, 1k thrown into even a 103 Breakout and the Kawasaki couldn't keep up and there's not a whole lot that could be done to increase Kawasaki's power. No cams, no big bore kits, no real intake options, exhaust options are extremely limited. My stage 3 114 Street Bob that I paid 14k for and put 3k in parts into (I did all the work) will shred a Kawasaki 1700 like it's standing still. 135 hp compared to the 1700's 90 hp and 145 tq compared to the 1700's 115 tq at the crank. I'd compare it to my weekend/track bike, but I've spent well more than 3k in parts and it's not a bulletproof every day rider like my other Street Bob. I liked my Vaquero, it was a very dependable bike, but the motor in that bike isn't make for performance. Yamaha should have put their 119 in more bikes besides the Stratoliner and Raider, though. That was a beast engine and Yamaha screwed up by not expanding that into other bikes. If they'd have done that and taken enough of a marketshare, there would have been enough of a consumer base to really work the aftermarket.

@@breedlofam I agree, Yamaha star warrior was my favorite. I keep my 2018 Kawasaki Zed 900 naked to fill my speedy nitch. After 3 old Harleys 1973-84 This year I paid cash for a 2023 new Softtail standard... had the dealer replace the plastic intake manifold with an aluminum one and put drag bars on before I would take her off the dealer floor. She is my dream bike since I was 15 years old, she is my highway only in the wind ride. she has a minor oil leak on the front jug just below the bottom rocker box cover that started at 230 mies... it is warranty work after thanksgiving she is going back for the 5th try to fix it. their is a plastic front manifold for the oil cooler flow lines that cools the rockers. I think it is the bottom rocker box cover gasket and I may have them put the Screaming eagle stage 3 on her if they must remove all the front head area to do the gasket. she only has 510 miles because of the issue. She is plenty fast for me because I am only 140 pounds at 5 ft 5 inch. tall. I always say riding a Harley is like holding a bull by the horns and riding thunder. Nothing else like it. saying that about the wishing for a 1700 vulcan is just my frustration over the leak issue. Stay in the wind👍

Cheaper than a Harley? Oh, yes! Definitely a LOT cheaper than an Overpriced, Overrated, Harley! BETTER than a Harley? ABSOLUTELY AND DEFINITELY WAY BETTER than any and every Harley! I have a 2016 Kawasaki Vulcan Voyager 1700 that I bought recently to replace the 2005 Yamaha Road Star Silverado 1700 that an elderly woman (87 years old) TOTALED when she Rear-ended me while I was stopped at a traffic light behind several other cars! And I loved that Yamaha, it was THE BEST motorcycle I've ever owned, and I've owned a lot of motorcycles. My first motorcycle was an old "Harley Davidson Electra Glide." It was stripped down (no saddle bags, windshield, etc.) but it was a Harley! That one CURED ME on Harley's! Constantly having to work on it, and when it did run it was too heavy and cumbersome to handle. And the COST, let's not even get into that one! The "H.D." doesn't really stand for "Harley Davidson," it stands for "Hundred Dollars!" Because everything costs more than $100. And several of my friends bought Harley's, and they were "constantly having to WORK on it" and "put more MONEY in it." Every time we planned a group ride, the "Harley owners" wanted to have a special "WORK on our bikes time" before the Ride! Sorry, but I don't buy motorcycles to have to constantly WORK on them. I buy them to RIDE! I like to RIDE because it's ALL about the RIDE! It's about the JOUNEY... NOT the destination! And I buy the ones that are DEPENDABLE and WELL-BUILT and don't COST me a lot of money just because of "the name" on it. Like the Expensive Leather boots, coats, vests, and chaps, with the "Official Harley-Davidson Logo" on them that are ALL "Made in Pakistan" (the country of OUR ENEMY)! Over the years, I've owned that 1 Harley, a couple Kawasaki's, a Triumph, several Yamaha's and even more Honda's. I considered buying a couple BMW's and Suzuki's but never bought one. I've owned 3 Goldwing's (a 1979, 1982, & 1985) and a few Honda 750-Four's and 550-Four's and Yamaha Virago's. For 50 years I've been more of a fan of Honda's and Yamaha's. I bought this 2016 Kawasaki Vulcan Voyager VN1700, and after putting 1,000 miles on it in the last 3 weeks, I think this one is my "New ALL-TIME Favorite!" I like it even better than the Yamaha 1700 that some woman rear-ended because she obviously was NOT "Paying Attention." Either she was not paying attention to her driving, OR she was too old and had too many health issues to be a "Competent & SAFE" driver! Either way, I got 2 broken ribs a badly sprained shoulder and 2 large hematoma's on my legs and "my Favorite" bike now Totaled because of her. But I thank GOD that I'm not dead, and my body is healing, and I'll be okay. And for those who like to "boast" that "Harley's are Made in AMERICA!" Correction, Harley's are "Assembled" in AMERICA, using MANY Communist Chinese made parts! There are several models of Honda's and Yamaha's (and some other "Jap bikes") that are also "Assembled" in AMERICA! But they're built with Japanese AND AMERICAN made parts. Japan is "OUR" ally! China is "OUR" ENEMY! I'll buy from (and financially support) those who are MY FRIEND & ALLY rather than those who are MY ENEMY!

There is no actual data I can find to substantiate that a Kawasaki will outlast or is more reliable than a Harley "based on Kawasaki's track record." I've persoanlly seen both have their share of great and bad examples. From my personal experience, the Kawasaki is cheaper to maintain and own. But also, both deliver unique and compelling value propositions.

There are quite a few sources out there indicating Kawasaki’s superiority of any measurable factor (cost of ownership, MSRP, warranty coverage, cost of parts, etc.) over Harley. Other less measurable stuff like long term reliability and looks would have to come from long term owners of these types of bikes. Going through various forums, Kawasaki appears to have far fewer problems than HD. Just google: “reliability, harley kawasaki” and go through the websites that pop up. I cannot testify the sources are credible, but unfortunately that’s all I got to check for info. As for the looks, it is a subjective topic. I personally like the look of Harleys more.

There are so many reasons why the road glide is a better deal and better value even though it cost $4000 more. Kawasaki needs to reevaluate if they think someone touring America doesn't want or need infotainment. From color options, infotainment, dealership available along the road to customizing and performance upgrades, Harley is the clear winner. I hated Harleys for most of my life. I've only owned metric bikes. But wanted something that was better for touring. The vaquero is the bike I wanted.........but I bought a Harley. And I'm glad I did.

You my friend are drinking the Kool-Aid if you think a Harley is a better bike. I owe a new Harley and have owned a few of the years. Harley has been in dire straits for a long time and have had a track record of poor builds and quality control on their engines. This is a fact and from experience. I love my Harley and enjoy riding it but as soon as I bought it the whole engine was disassembled and all new parts installed were all S&S components. 15k worth of aftermarket parts to make my over priced Harley to run like a reliable Japanese bike. As I said I love Harley’s. I love the look and cosmetics of the bikes but the internals are garbage and Harley knows this but they don’t care about the customer…hence why they have been in rough waters for years. With proper maintenance intervals that Vaquero will outlast any Harley on the road. Pull you top end off the bike on your Harley and have a look at your pistons. At 2000km minimum the carbon buildup will look like a bike that has been ridden with 500,000km. Kawa, Yamaha, Honda, Suzuki have and will always build a better bike. That may hurt you to hear but unfortunately those are the facts.

@@VincentVagabond 😂😂😂 I haven't spent any money on my Harley engine wise and it'll out perform ANY OEM metric cruiser. I used to think all the Harley guys were drinking the Kool aid as well. And maybe they are to a certain extent. But if you want a bike that you can modify to your heart's content, it's a Harley. If you want a bike that you can just make a beast of a engine out of, it's gonna be Harley. There is virtually no aftermarket support for the vaquero. If you want a bike that has infotainment (which means something to almost everyone that doesn't wear adult diapers), it's gonna be Harley. Maybe YOU are the one drinking the Kool aid.

@@nrgrlsd9931 I have been a motorcycle mechanic for 22 years. 8 of those years a master motorcycle mechanic. You do know why there are a ton of aftermarket parts out there for Harley right?? To fix Harley’s problems. S&S alone have solved and fixed 100% of Harley’s issues internally. When they had the oil sumping issues on new bikes their fix was drill a hole in your bottom end and install a vent…which did nothing to fix the main problem. S&S solved it with their oil pump and cam plate. Harley would have had to recall a ton of bikes and figure out a way to fix this issue which would cost way to much for them. Once you went aftermarket to fix this issue there goes your warranty. Between old school technology and poor quality control Harley will continue to go down hill. Do you know how many Harley dealers shut their doors in the past 5 years? A ridiculous amount! You can certainly love your Harley. I love mine. The problem is if you have a 2016 and up M8 that is stock you are going to be dealing with severe issues if you don’t get some aftermarket parts in your case. You have no idea how may M8’s I have pulled apart with low KM’ with major issues. In regards to drinking the Kool-Aid…yes sir I am drinking it. My flavor is the truth and reality flavor. All day and everyday I have a harley engine apart fixing cheap internals everyday. Some of those engine internals made of plastic.
