Canon's 5D Mark IV is by far one of my favorite full-frame cameras but is it still worth getting with all the new mirrorless cameras coming out from Canon and other camera brands?
Brand New Canon 5DMIV Price: $2,299.00 (B&H, Canon USA, Adorama)

I ❤️ my 5DIV and plan to keep it for years to come. The used EF lenses are becoming cheaper and cheaper as people switch to the RF lenses.

Not a Canon guy, but this is exactly how I feel with Nikon. Lots of guys switching to Z, and buying new lenses instead of using the FTZ. Just leaves more high quality lenses for me (and every other SLR holdout).

Yeah I love my 5d Markiv, a matter of fact my thumbnail photo of my dog was taken with it. I do also have the R5 and it’s a wonderful camera as well but the photos I get from the 5d Markiv are so good that I barely have to edit them at all. The color output is beautiful as well, I actually prefer the colors from the 5d Markiv . I’ll never sell it!

I’m just a hobbyist photographer from Melbourne and shooting with my 5D mk4 is nothing but joy. It just works and the view finder is so soothing compared to evf. I did the switch from 5D lll to mirror less system than back to Dslr. I’d rather quit photography than use an evf again.

Don’t get me wrong I love the smaller mirror less systems and the auto zoom while manual focusing is nothing but spectacular. Unfortunately I started developing very itchy, runny eyes. The level of discomfort was only getting worse for me from using the evf. For sure! I think the change from film to DSLR’s was a big change and it made photography so much more accessible and easier for people to process their photos along with not being limited on how many shots they could take with film, instead it was based on how big your memory card was. As well as being able to see your shot right after you took the photo instead of having to wait and hope you got the shot after you got your photos developed.

UK here, just recently bought a brand new 5D4 for £1500 (digitalrev) - I have had the 5D 3 not long after it launched and wanted the improved low light high ISO performance and improved AF in low light primarily. In the end I found out that there are a host of improved features and some new that I actually really like on the 4 vs 3. I did consider going EOS R5 or R6 MkII but the cost it at least double, and then gotta buy the RF to EF mount ring too on top - And you lose out on battery life so need to buy extra batteries which are £120each... For me DSLR is what I will stick with until mirrorless prices fall to sensible levels. I will retain my EF L lenses as they are so good, I see little reason to spend even more on RF lenses, when the official lens ring does such a great job at improving EF lens performance on an R series body with no downsides. So right now 5D4 is my main, 5d3 is the backup. I also had a 6D Mark II but something always felt off about it, the screen quality just wasn't up to 5D clarity, and the shutter noise just didn't feel as familiar as a 5D's shutter does. Little details matter.
@ericsunphotography
@ericsunphotography Год назад
Congratulations on your new 5DMIV! In addition to everything that you said, from what I heard, Canon is still working on improving their RF lenses as well, and similar to you, I just can't justify spending an extra $1000 USD on an RF lens compared EF when the RF lens line is still being developed when EF lenses are amazing themselves plus all the third party options you have too. The 5DMIV still carries itself as an amazing camera even with the new mirrorless ones coming out and that definitely says something!

I still use mine. Don't have plans to switch any time soon, don't have any reason to, this one gets the work done. shutter, aperture, iso...all I need basically and files easy to develop. Many say focus points better on milc, yeah great, but, 99% of those who are poitning that, use live view anyway. Put 5d mk4 to live view and you get the same thing and focus all over the screen. Maybe in 10-15 years, if I am still alive, i will switch to mirrorless, but for now I am good with good old dslr.

@ericsunphotography Год назад
100% facts! This camera was definitely built to last and it holds its own time after time. The focus in the VF and in LV work so seamless for me that when I hear other people talk about focus points and etc. from other cameras, it doesn’t phase me too much because the 5DMIV just does such an amazing job that the question for me is, how do these new cameras compare to the 5DMIV. Then I might pay closer attention 😂😂
@DenniBoy44
@DenniBoy44 9 месяцев назад
Thanks for your review, I am planning to buy 5DMK4 in 2023, because of much better viewfinder, compared to mirrorless, and also it gives you emotional contact to what you are photographing. Regarding big video file size - the other side of that, it that codec consumes less processor time, and camera does not go to overheat, and battery works longer - which is pain in mirrorless with image stabilization.
@ericsunphotography
@ericsunphotography 7 месяцев назад
The viewfinder! Yes, that’s my biggest complaint about mirrorless cameras and I don’t hear many people talking about that. I guess not as many people use it anymore? Not sure but I covered an event the other day with the 5DMIV and it made shooting so much easier than if I just shot with a mirrorless. I do think canon “fixed” the overheating issue with the R5…as long as you don’t constantly film in 4K 60 for long periods of time.

Thank you, I fully agree. I have two 5Div bodies, 5Dsr, R6ii, and a ton of L glass. Both DSLRs have grips and are literally extension of my hand. 5D series has been refined to near perfection (same probably goes to Nikon DSLRs). My fingers know the button placement and fly through settings changes without even looking. I feel no disadvantage whatsoever when using a DSLR. 1Dx series cameras are very nice too but more expensive and I like the flexibility of removable grip. Mirrorless camera is fun to use but I find it to be more of a toy and not built as well as pro DSLRs. Time will tell. Accelerated changes in functionality, size and button placement, take time to adapt to. Sure, once you’re used to it, it’s all great… until they change it again just so they can increase their profit margins. Transition from film to digital was more seamless to me and justified. The overall layout of cameras remained consistent with the addition of a screen. But this time the need to change is not obvious. DSLRs, in general, have not exhausted their potential, certainly not in image quality department. The only undeniable advantage of mirrorless is fast autofocus and eye tracking. The autofocus and EVF have brought pro cameras to the masses. Anyone with enough money can now buy R5 and 50mm 1.2 and produce stunning images. Camera will do it all for you. But the underlying knowledge and skills are lost or devalued. Lastly, Canon, what’s up with all the bulky and plasticky RF lenses, even the L glass? Sure, the image quality is great, but why are the lenses so fat and plasticky, especially for the huge amount of money they cost? What’s up with the noisy focus motors on the non-L “cheap” lenses making robot sounds from the 80s? Is any of this going to last like the EF glass? What’s up with heavy reliance on in-camera correction to mask huge flaws in optical design on non-L glass? Locking RF mount for other lens manufacturers is BS. Anyway, I’ll stop ranting here. Lol

Haha this is an open space to share your thoughts! Thanks for sharing too! I definitely agree with some points that you mentioned and I personally still love the DSLR VF. Can’t stand the mirrorless EVF sometimes but at the end of the day, those that do prioritize craft and continue to grow in their art will be able to create great images regardless of gear. It’s the foundation you build upon that keeps you going!!

@@Himmelsdrake The image quality is comparable. Colours are similar. Eric, this is a good conversation about the 5D IV being worth it compared to the newer mirrorless offerings. First off , I'm still using a Canon 5D lll that I find to be more than adequate for my needs. I'm a hobbyist and not a PRO. I've spent a lot of money for my trinity lenses along with the purchase of several "L" wide angle lenses and some medium and standard telephoto "L" lenses. I have been contemplating the move up to mirrorless but have heard that the adapter EF to RF isn't all that great. I'm still watching and looking into this. Selling these older EF lenses and buying the newer more expensive RF lenses to replace them does not make me happy as I have limited fund to do so. Will I "UP GRADE" to the newer Mirrorless camera in the future ? Hard to say but, for the sake of frugality I'll most likely purchase the 5D IV, which will be still more camera than I need. I am not an EARLY ADOPTER nor do I have GAS (gear acquisition syndrome ) but I'm sure a 5D IV would take me into the year 2030 with no problems. Just my 2 cents ! I enjoyed your thoughts on this and have been looking at KEH and UPP for that eventual up grade.
@ericsunphotography
@ericsunphotography Год назад
Thanks so much! I definitely hear you on the EF to RF adapter concerns and I'm not about those RF lens prices either loll. I do think that DSLR's are going to hold their own for a very long time for both hobbyists and pros. Not sure how this will affect the pricing of the mirrorless cameras out right now but there are rumors of Canon coming out with new mirrorless cameras next year and you can bet that there will be some pretty good/fairly new used R series cameras will be for sale from those who do have "GAS" haha.

This is one of the very few current reviews about DSLR / 5DMk4 which does not end with a recommendation for mirrorless. If used for photography and if one has the skills using a DSLR there is hardly a difference in IQ compared to mirrorless cameras. I have used the R5 several times and haven‘t seen relevant advantages regarding IQ in 95% of my used cases. Development and innovation for sensors have slowed down. No need to rush with changing platforms. The OVF is one of the greatest strengths and advantages of DSLR platforms - if one knows how to expose. I also agree with the ergonomics of the 5D which is perfect. Only the shutter sound is terrible, what a pity. ;) I also appreciate the simplicity of the camera, it is not a computer. Especially when one earns money with photography you need to be thoughtful with your investments. This camera still delivers and the EF platform is cost efficient.
@ericsunphotography
@ericsunphotography Год назад
💯! I can’t get over how awesome having an OVF really is. I use it so often and I just love the simplicity of it and the mirrors in DSLR’s. I also agree about EF lenses. Just can’t justify switching to RF even though some people have told me using an RF lens is better but currently, the difference between EF and RF doesn’t justify the price in my opinion!
@zvitkovits
@zvitkovits Год назад
@@ericsunphotography RF have many advantages and give better results but the difference in real world use is irrelevant in most of the cases. I bet in a few years from now we will see a hype around the ‚special character‘ of some EF lenses. By emphasising the simplicity you are addressing a key point in my eyes. The new platforms / systems are less about improved IQ but much more about intelligent support systems for producing images. Output is getting more and more streamlined, human contribution (including mistakes) and happenstance are more and more eliminated. Soon humans will not be needed for the production if images. Commercially good for agencies. Photography as a business is becoming even more unattractive - which is fine. If one wants to practice photography, simplicity and even restrictions of gear will bring joy and extraordinary results. Approaching the world through a good OVF allows me to be much more in direct contact with the subjects than watching simulations in a video screen. I find myself using the OVF being more creative and inspired. In post-production I remember scenes and can edit them according to my impressions and feelings I had in that moment. I also use mirrorless/EVF and find it less inspiring because its already digitally interpreted. As professional photographers we can give up striving for efficiency and productivity in producing images. Technology does the job better. We should focus on creativity and innovativeness in content creation. Simplicity supports that.

The video capabilities isn’t bad (compared to the new cameras coming out, it’ll do what it needs for sure but it isn’t really anything worth mentioning now since what the 5DMIV has seems like a base for all new cameras coming out). You’ll definitely benefit from the higher MP sensor. I know that a few canon lenses need firmware updates for RF use so that will depend on the lenses you have. I haven’t updated my EF lenses firmwares and they’re pretty great. I do have a mount that I use but I still use my 5DIV quite often. At a quick glance, I saw some for a little less than $1300 online used. I’d always recommend renting first to see how you like it if you’re able to before paying all that money for one but short answer is, yes. I love mine still and for what I shoot, it’s a great one to have! But I will also say that depending on your needs, looking into mirrorless cameras and knowing your options isn’t a bad thing either. You’ll just have to pay a little more for new memory cards and other accessories if you do get a mirrorless camera. Hope that helps!

I decided on the 5D4 when mirrorless hit the scene and I don't regret it. I needed to move up from the 6D2 and 80D and I'm happy I chose to stick with the DSLR. Honestly, I did buy the EOS R at 1st but took it back to Best Buy a week later because it honestly did feel like a toy. My 5D4 just fits in my hand so perfectly. And I figured that if the 5D4 was good enough for the pros then it will surely be good enough for me. I'm debating on adding the 5Dsr to my gear, but I don't want the 5D4 to end up sitting on the sidelines, and I don't want to be throwing money around just to end up with 2 similar cameras. Any thoughts? I mostly shoot landscape in Colorado Springs and that keeps me busy in my retirement. I can't say this from experience, but I think I learn more and I am more involved in the end result of my photos by sticking with the old school DSLR's. It was nice to have come across your video, thanks.
@ericsunphotography
@ericsunphotography Год назад
I think if you did get both of those cameras, the 5Dsr would be the one sitting on the sidelines more because the quality and performance from the 5DIV is really amazing. If you want a cheaper second camera that functions about the same and you’re just doing stills, I think the 5Dsr would be a good second camera but if you’re only/mostly shooting landscapes, if you need a second camera then go for it or save up to get a second camera that may perform better than the 5DIV in scenarios that you run across often. Getting cameras that are too similar could be a great thing but I look for cameras that compliment each other (one is better in video, one is better in photo, etc) so I can choose the equipment best suited for the job. But all that to say, can’t go wrong with your choices but I’d just keep in mind if I’ll get my money’s worth investing that much and getting 2 camera bodies. Just my opinion!

@ericsunphotography
@ericsunphotography Год назад
I understand the struggle! Honestly, either camera will work great with that you’re looking to shoot. The determining factor for me would be if I wanted to switch systems or not and if I wanted to do any video work. I’ve used the 5DIV for all of those genres and I’ve never had a complaint. The biggest thing for street photography and night photos would be your lens which you’d be paying a pretty penny for because of the aperture range and low light capabilities. The 5DIV is bigger and a little heavier than the Sony (which you’ll feel the difference if you’re walking around a lot doing street photography). I’d personally stick with the 5DIV loll though I am a little biased to be honest. But quality, both are great cameras!

@ericsunphotography
@ericsunphotography Год назад
You definitely can! It would all depend on what you’d need the upgrade for but the R6 II, I’ve heard great things about it. The 5DIV is definitely a great camera and can perform alongside the R6II but if you’re ok with changing from 2 cameras to 1 and wanting to do more video or whatever, the switch could definitely be helpful! I might wait a littler personally, because there are a lot of rumors about Canon releasing more cameras which can bring down the price of the R6II but that’s just me!

I’m an amateur photographer who started with a point and shoot. I wanted a viewfinder piece and went for a used Canon T6 body and a new 50mm 1.8 lens under a certain budget. Now I own a used Canon 5D Mark IV because I want the viewfinder piece, full frame image, and to grow as a photographer. I do have a different budget. I still can’t do the whole new and better cameras under the cost they are. I am an amateur photographer. Will I grow with this camera and learn about its limitation? Absolutely. By then I can try and make the switch to Sony or Canon’s RF.

Hi Eric, Im actually just in the moment to change my old 2x 6Ds and 4 lenses to a new camera kit, and i'm in doubt if would be good idea to buy a 5DIV or move to R5 or R6II. I do mostly portraits and events but i am frustrated with the 6D autofocus (lots of unfocused eyes) so i don't know if 5DIV will give me a more reliable "in focus" experience or just move to an R camera (with all the money difference i have to put on). Can anyone give me with any advice about??? Cheers from Chile!!!
@ericsunphotography
@ericsunphotography Год назад
Thanks for your comment! So, personally from reading your comment, I’m leaning on telling you to maybe go with an R series camera actually because of its eye detection auto focus. Granted, there’s no camera out there that will hit perfect focus 100% of the time and when I use the R5, sometimes it misses the eyes or it becomes annoying and focuses on the eyes of a picture in the background or the wrong person. BUT I’m leaning that way because if you mostly shoot portraits, I’d go with an R series. However, for events, I actually really like to use the 5DMIV because of the optical view finder. I find that to be so much better and reliable than the electronic view finder in the mirrorless cameras. This is just my experience and comparing the MIV and R5. For portraits, I don’t know the f-stop you like to shoot at but shooting at a 2.8, 3.5,4,5.6 on a 24-70 zooming in, or an 85mm 1.4 a good distance away, I haven’t really had much of an issue with missing focus in the eyes or subject in general (outside of the occasional misfocus from the camera). Both are certainly great and you’ll save money on the 5DIV but keep in mind that canon no longer supports DSLR’s so what you get is what you get. Let me know if this helps. It’s a long message but if you got any other questions, hit me up!

Hey! Thanks for your question. So there isn’t an electronic shutter mode because it’s still a DSLR and has a mirror inside that flips but you can turn on a silent shutter modes. There’s some options to choose from depending on what you prefer but you can still hear the shutter when you take photo. I turn it on sometimes and it’s a big difference depending on the space that I’m shooting. Hope this helps! You can go to the camera menu, the red section to page 6 and you’ll see “Silent LV shoot.”

@mamumonkan I’m not too familiar with Pentax since all the bodies I use/used are Canon ones but Canon announced, before they started releasing all their mirrorless cameras said that they’re not really supporting their DSLR’s anymore. I could be wrong but in that announcement it included firmware updates. Which is unfortunate but that’s why I don’t think Canon will have an “electronic shutter” silent mode for the 5DMIV. There are some cameras that are capable of both mechanical and electronic but the MIV, to my knowledge doesn’t have that ability where the shutter is as silent as an electronic shutter.

@@ericsunphotography A great alternative that's cheaper than the 5D Mark IV, is the Nikon D500, even though it's sensor is a APS-C sized with a 20.4 MP resolution, it is a excellent sensor: it can give you great image quality even when the I.S.O is set to 25,000; plus it is possible to achieve 24"x16" prints. Another great aspect is that this D500 has great auto-focusing, to name a few positives.

I think with that and the specs of the D500, for those that might be reading this, the canon equivalent to this, that I could find would be the 90D, which brand new, is a little cheaper than the D500 if an APS-C sensor is something that people would be interested in if they wanted to stick with Canon. I've never invested in or used Nikon really but camera manufacturers now definitely all make quality cameras. So, check out the D500 and 90D for APS-C (crop sensor) if you're interested! Unlike the R5 body design which is more linear with hard edges, the body design of the 5D MK IV is superior due to the curves and softly profiled edges, in fact all the 5D series DSLRs body designs are superior than the body designs of all non professional Mirrorless cameras. The award for the WORST body designs goes to Sony because all Sony Mirrorless cameras are linear with hard edges, it appears they no longer employ Industrial-Designers to design their cameras; I complained to Sony about the utterly CRAP body designs of their Mirrorless cameras, they still haven't replied 3 years later. I wish Nikon and Cannon had retained the curvy body designs for their Mirrorless cameras; I love the body designs of the D500 and the 5D MKIV
