what do you think of the seat confort? comparing to your other videos, you failed to mention anything about this subject. it is better or worst than the previous generation? thank you.
Have to say the Base design looks Class apart in that Black and Chrome finish. It makes it look a Step above the rest. The AMG version does not stand out like that. It is stylish in its own way. It is sportier. But E-Class being Sporty hmmmmm.... not a great combination.
@@JamesSmith-qs4hx As MB chases BMW, they're doing this flat roundel on the hood like BMW, with that gigantic gaudy star in the grille. That's fine, but just don't deny E Class customers the proper upright star on the bonnet - at least as a special order option.
I love it. My one complaint is the lack of physical controls, especially on the steering wheel. Also, it would be good to customise those a bit, for example, being able to skip songs from steering wheel.
Seems they (car manufacturers) don't care as it makes them earn more. Physical controls cost more, and yet they kept the price btw when switching to a cheaper option. Ha ha, jokes on us.
You can skip songs from the steering wheel so long as the central display is showing the Audio screen. The buttons will control whatever you choose to display there.
@SDav21 you're right, but that's way too much faff. You have to leave the sat nav or whichever screen, navigate to the audio, highlight the next and click on it. All this with the capacitive little button. And then navigate back all the way to your sat nav, losing it while trying to skip a song. Even trickier to go back into it if using Android Auto/Car Play. The only good way to skip songs is using the middle touch pad next to the seat. Every other manufacturer have dedicated buttons on the wheels..
@SDav21 ah I see, thought you meant having the audio in central display, my bad. I rarely use the audio in driver display tbh as I prefer having other information. But you're right that you can have the audio and skip from there simply going up or down on the wheel. My pet peeve with that is you need to display and control an audio screen somewhere and can't directly control the audio skip (imagine you had to open the audio just to change volume). For example, if you could have the volume scroll wheel (ignoring they're going with capacitive buttons going forward..) click left and right, just like how a computer mouse wheel sometimes can. Or, if you could change some the the button for others, eg the answer/hang up calls to be skip songs instead. Going one step forward, have the icons on the wheel be small displays, and they can change depending on how you customise your settings, which are saved on your profile in the car. I never use the voice control or favourite buttons for example, would be nice to have something I actually use.
Flushed door handles - looks nice, totally unnecessary. Aero gain is minimal, could go wrong. And will, eventually. Electro powered vents - although looks over-engineered, it actually make sense. They can auto adjust for optimal airflow, and you can still adjust them manually if you want to. Best of both worlds. Dash camera - probably good as a security feature when the car is locked/breached. Otherwise just a gimmick and a spy tool for the paranoid. :) As always, great review Thomas and Autogefühl!
I know Mercedes has to step up with tech but never overdo it,especially with screens and "digital vents"... What a nightmare this car will be to maintain after a few years
People have been making these sort of comments ever since the wheel was invented. It’s not particularly insightful, or original, and we are managing just fine despite these fang-dangle new inventions, like the flint stone and spiky clubs.
Dude, it doesn’t only happen for Mercedes but for every German car brand out there now. If u get a German car and keep calculating about maintenance and resale value, better off for some Asian car brands then :)
I think we’re well beyond expecting any advance in technology to become a major problem just a few years into ownership. That’s not proving to be the case.
@@gcm747I have, a 2016 Mercedes e300, suffered cruise control sensor problem, rear left indicator flashed too fast, and even went into limp mode two years into ownership, if that’s a 2016 model, this model is absolutely going to be horrendous
@@theseb1979 nobody has complaint since the invention of the wheel 😂 hilarious comment. A lot of people embraced new ideas all the way into the 2000's but when more and more screens became the norm people realized that they meant trouble. And they have been right!! All the electric gimmicks from the 2010's cars start to make problems. Just google most common repairs on these cars. You will see what im talking about.
It's just another example of where the automotive industry goes. And it's a wrong direction: touchscreens which are dangerous to use when driving, touch buttons dangerous from the same reasons, games onbaord, warning sounds when you exceed speed by 1 km/h. Did you see the way the folded rear seats create the "flat" area with the boot? Horrible finish! :( Why the long press of the button on the steering wheel does not include switching off the lane assistant? Why? Sucha missed opportunity!

Thank you for demonstrating the BS slider function for the sunroof. In my almost 35 year old 190E I can find and operate the sunroof button without even looking where it is. Oh, it always works the first time I press it. And thanks for criticising the non haptive feedback of the cheap ass seat adjusting buttons. I hope the responsible Mercedes interior designer is watching this video also. There's a lot to learn for him/her.
The speed warning shortcut is a perfect feature! I recently drove an EQE SUV and Ioniq6 back to back and in the case of Hyundai, you have to go to some submenu and turn off the traffic sign recognition completely to get rid of annoying warning beeps. Otherwise, the new E looks pretty nice, one of the best-looking regular Mercedes models at the moment. I really did afraid that they will screw that up.
It's because they're laser focused on China, at the expense of UK/USA Exclusive E Class customers. What an ignorant decision. Someone at MB obviously has too much time on their hands.
Yes, S-Class seems all about being driven now, that's the main upgrade over the E. I do like the 10º rear steering, but shorter cars need that less, or less of it. I guess the Estate doesn't get it because wagon shoppers like myself just want to bit big stuff in the back. I personally care more about space between the wheel cases than total volume. Oddly, Renault Talisman seems widest in the back.
These new Mercedes are nice, but I’ll be keeping my 2017 CLS 550 as my daily driver. One of the best big body styles ever from Benz.. along with the S coupe and GT 4 door.
We can't even get that E Class style anymore in the USA. MB doesn't care, they've put all the eggs in China's basket. China is getting it. The USA is only getting the hotrod Sport style.
Great info! So much detail. I really appreciate this. I heard something about the exhaust pipes being fake for decoration. Wondering where the exhaust is exiting the engine and why bother with false exhaust ports.
As always, great work Thomas. I understand why Mercedes has gone so heavy into tech unfortunately it makes these cars far more disposable. Those screens and the processors that drive them will fail sooner than later as they are exposed to such climate extremes. Do you guys get long termers? I think cars like this would be great for you guys to have for 6 months to a year and you could update us monthly on your findings.
This should not be a problem, they do heat endurance runs (e.g. sunroof is required to work up to 90°C) and test the cars extensively in very hot climates (phoenix, az).
I feel a classic style exterior and cloth interior with no super screen or black plastic bs would be the preferred option. Mercedes need to speak up Mazda on ergonomics. I feel Mercedes need to back to their roots, great seats, excellent ergonomics and safety and bulletproof reliability and quality.
i had a high spec W213 and now an S211 E55, the interior of that is my favourite overall. With an Android HU it has all the modern connectivity. Proper buttons for all the controls without having go thru screens and use awkward touch sensitive controls just to adjust the Climate etc. Also the quality of the interior is more solid, and E55 has ,more comfier and higher quality seats with nappa leather and adjustable air cushions inside. The suspension is fully airmatic , and far more comfy and no juddering over expansion joints like in the new ones. Most importantly it has a supercharged V8 , not a hybrid I6, and the biggest boot of all the E class wagons - much more than the new S214, AND 2 jump seats underneath.
Digital Vents are useful with multiple drivers as the positions will remember Driver 1 or and driver 2 Seat Settings, and vent settings, steering wheel settings Etc.
I've had both cream and gray interiors in my MBs. Never had a problem with them looking dirty. If that would happen though after many years then you can just leave the car for an interior recond and everything is back to virtually new again.
awesome review as usual. cant wait for you to review (driving review i mean) the new BMW 5 series. Hopefully you get to test a combustion version of it. Any ETA on that?
I wonder if they offered a model without the touch screen and used real buttons if it would OUTSELL the one with the glitchy screen and voice commands.
@autogefuehl Great review, great car. Digital air vents are great for driver profiles, and maybe there are (or will be) optimized presets for internal airflow in the car depending on the amount of passengers, where they sit and so on.
Nice...but what a shame the classy grille with upright star on the bonnet will not be offered in the USA. Very disrespectful for MB to produce it, but not offer it - especially in the USA (not even as a special order option). Definite deal-breaker for many. But I'm sure MB has figured they will make up any such lost US E Class sales in China.
I love the look of it externally.on the inside these screens would be too distracting, and the light reflecting from them would annoy me.The remainder of the interior is very classy.
Love the review, not so much the car, as Thomas said, it's so much touch bullshit, give me back my buttons. I'm enjoying my E Coupé as long as I can, I don't even see a real successor to it in the Mercedes Benz space unfortunately.
Don’t miss out on testing the rear blinds. I found that in some cars the window blinds aren’t really tight to the pilars which is bad for both function and looks.
I have this amazing thing that is lots smaller than a phone that I just keep in my pocket or belt. Can then open my car and start it without problem. No need missing with an app or opening my phone or taking it out of my jacket. Maybe Mercedes will use a key fob someday too.
I wonder why they don't have a lock and unlock button on the passenger door handle as well. They've take it away in recent years. The 212 and 213 has it. Now if a passenger sits in the car while waiting for the driver they have to reach all over to the other side to lock all door.
Staggering that the small hybrid battery still can't be hidden in the floor without removing cargo space. EVs this size hide up to 120 kWh and even 150 kWh (upcoming) under the floor, but E-Class can't hide a 20 kWh battery with long term ever smaller engines and tanks? The Lucid Air sticks 670 hp on the rear axle but the E-Class hybrid needs a gear tunnel with just a drive shaft in there? Mercedes continues what we have already seen with EQS and EQE: horrible packaging, as if buyers of such cars don't care about details like that.
This is just a basic face lift from the current model the BMW is a complete redesign. This will need additional redesign soon. The interior is very nice
You are spot on in your analysis of the EU regulated "acoustic speed warning". Totally counter productive and very very annoying as it kicks in from +1 km/h above the speed limit. Personally, I do not understand how this type of stupidity could pass through the parliament and the council...
I have longer legs, the most extreme position of the outgoing E-class is just enough for me. No adult can reasonably be seated behind me, which is (since I tried it in the showroom) my main complains with the E-class. The car seems plenty long to do better.
The exclusive line is always better, more true to the Mercedes traditions. A true Mercedes should have the star on the bonnet, and wood trim is mandatory for traditional feel of mercedes.
i think that only designers like black piano because they don use or do not clean their cars. cannot understand why they insist on that, removing all buttons is also a very bad ideia. as for design its very nice all around. inside looks better than S Class.
Looks so cheap and the rear is horrible with that plastic diffuser being too big and fake exhaust of course… edit: I also hate how the taillights look when you brake and overall the look…
Hi Thomas. For me this Mercedes E Class and the new BMW 5 Series are truly the cars that carry the soul of these companies. On these cars, the engineers and designers were neither lazzy nor crazy. The E and the 5 are unique, they set a very authentic tone in a cluster of look alikes (Merc) and crazy designs (BMW) that their siblings offer. Great review, you always deliver great results. If only you had been a politician lol.
I traded in my beloved A6 Avant for an E-Class because it 1. offered more trunk space and,2. most importantly, because the new A6's user interface is neither comfortable nor safe. When I look at the new E-Class, it is a beautiful car (inside and outside), but I have the same problems as in the A6 + a beautiful but hardly precise steering wheel. I'm not sure I even need to book a test drive. Only the lack of alternatives could push me. Before that, though, I'll check out Lexus and Genesis - they can still build safe and comfortable vehicles there. The German models do not trigger any buying impulse in me.
The single most annoying thing in the world is when Apple CarPlay doesn’t take up the whole screen. It’s 2023. How hard is it to get it to fill the screen?
