Need more help deciding? Check out this video I did comparing the AT2020 to another similar priced mic!! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-EDE-dM5NfnA.html
@@yous9858 There's a ton of knock-offs that are basically reproductions of mid-range mics. If you find a mic you want (like the audio technica 2020) look it up on Amazon and see the mics that come up that look the same but cost like $30. I use a Neewer that was like $20
@@yous9858 similarly to our friend above, it works! I think the difference between a $20 condenser and a $150 condenser is insignificant. The interface and software you're recording into tends to make the most difference past getting good raw input, which yeah the $20 neewer does well. Your ability to record cleanly and mix well is more important. Now if money is no object, yeah a $400 shure will be better and a $3,000 manley will be bananas, but for entry level is just go with the simple setup and play around with mixing
I bought several mics before getting an AT2020 around 2015. I had avoided the AT2020 because it was less expensive. Boy did I feel dumb. It's my favorite and the others have pretty much stayed in their boxes ever since. The AT2020 is the cleanest, flattest sounding mic I have with no coloration of the sound that I can detect. It sounds just like the real thing you recorded. It's not so great in a live, deafening loud, rock and roll setting. I prefer the old workhorses like the SM-57 or 58 for that. But if you want to mic a live acoustic guitarist to add some sound reinforcement, and still have it sound to the audience like you're standing right next to the guitarist, this mic does really well. Super clean. As you can see in this video, for studio voice work, it's as good a mic as you'll ever need. You can spend lots more money but it's not going to sound any better.
AT2020's not too shabby of a mic. Got mine alongside a Behringer Xenyx 302 almost a full year ago (November 30th to be exact) I carefully got those two items out of their boxes and started using them immediately. The BX302's not leaving my sight for anyone else's use; This awesome mic and simple audio interface is a pair that Listereens its work (says what it does, does what it says).
Thank you! 🙏... made a lot of mistakes trying to grow the channel the last 10 years.. Hopefully we keep going up from here! I appreciate the kind words
I bought a couple of AT2020 mics back in 2007 for a podcast a friend and I were doing. We ran them through a Tapco Mix 100 mixer (remember those?) and overall the setup worked really well. I still use that setup today if I need to record voiceovers. Solid mic that doesn't seem to age!
Audio Technica know what they're doing when it comes to mics. Been using AT2020 and MB3K for years now. Can't fault them at all for the quality/price range. Had less hassle with them live than Shure mics
As a new podcaster I have been through every mic setup. I JUST got this mic along with a steinburg ur12 interface which is older as well and it’s the best sounding ever. Zero background noise and fuzz with this mic and interface combo in my experience
Is this a good microphone for noisy environment? I live in a busy street and I’m having issues with the traffic plowing picked up on my mic . Would appreciate a response thank you 😊
Definitely not... you need need a direction mic that focuses on one area. What are you using the mic for? Are you standing in front of the camera and talking? Or are you interviewing people?
I used this mic while recording at my girlfriends house. I have a bunch of “good” (expensive) mics that I usually use and she’s had this one for years and damn I have to say I think I might prefer my vocals through this mic than all my other mics lol
Actually the SM7B was introduced in 2001.. the SM7 was introduced in 1976.. There was also the SM7A which came out in 1999 with improved some internals..My buddy bought the SM7A in 2000 and used it for his band.. what a killer mic... Also the original was 670 bucks in 1976 which today would be like 3,000 bucks.. So for a truly budget mic to release in 2004 for 169 bucks and still be so popular today is a testament to Audio Technicas quality. They could have easily discontinued this mic and charged 200 for a similar style easily.. Thanks for the history lesson.. even though you were kinda wrong.. thanks for the view and comment.. 👍
AT2020 is the condensor version of a SM85 or e835. Yes, they sound totally different and are different tech - I just mean that it's one of *those* 100 bucks microphones that manages to be really good for little cash, can last years etc. I mean it has downsides, for sure, but for the price it's really good.
The EV RE-20, Shure SM7B, and the Sennheiser MD 421 have been used for decades and are broadcast standards. Age is not a factor with a great mic. The AT-2020 is also on that list.
Ya know, it's funny, but when you look at the AT-2020, it's like the SM58 by Shure or the Electro-Voice RE20. And models at the $99 from other companies like Rode and Sennheiser; they found a way to make a quality model of microphone that people on a low budget could afford and they maintained that quality for years to come. Thanks for the review sir, I actually just purchased my first AT-2020 ever, it'll be here soon. Also, I subscribed to your channel. I'm trying to develop a career in Voice Over; thank you for your help.
Thanks for the video man, I just searched AT2020 review and got to your video; this solidified my decision to buy one, luckily Amazon had these in stock for the correct price! Thank you and keep making videos!
Hey Tech Examined, I would really appreciate if you replied to my comment because I am in desperate need of help. Your AT2020 sounds clean and crisp while mine sounds echo(y) and really loud. Do you use any filters? Also if I touch the desk or the mic to adjust it (like you did trying to show the different angels), I get a loud scraping sound. Please help! Any information would help.
I've had the AT2020 recommended to me by a few people, and I need the XLR version. However, I was wondering, is it possible to connect the AT2020 XLR to a USB port on your computer and record into Adobe Audition (or any program) with an adapter of some sort (and without an interface)? If so, what kind of adapter.. I assume it would need to include phantom power. Thanks for your great video!
Am I right to understand that while this mic can be good for podcasting as a beginner set and perhaps cover songs, it is not a good choice if I do not want to show the mic and equipment in the frame?
The AT2020 is the second mic I bought on impulse when at a hifi store - and I love it. First one was an AT2100x which is also awesome but in a different way - it's a great inexpensive dynamic mic and has the versatility of both XLR and USB, but sometimes you want the behaviour of a condenser mic, and for me, the 2020 fits perfectly. Audio Technica know what they're doing.
Good Evening! i was wondering if you could clarify what 'phantom power' is? and also is there a quality benefit of XLR over USB for the cost difference? especially since i'm led to believe that XLR (the cheaper one) is actually the better one? new to the channel, nice review, thankyou (Y)
I plan on buying this microphone to record singing and rap vocals. Also to record my own podcast. Would you always recommend getting a microphone that requires phantom power over a USB microphone for this purpose?
Hey I'm looking for a mic for youtube/gaming. I've heard a lot about the blue yeti mic and i saw this one also. Which one would you say has the better quality regardless of the price ?
I'm coming from the Astro A40 TR and was interested in the AT2020. One question, when you talk into the mic, can you hear yourself in the headset (without echo)? The Astros had what they call a "Side Tone" that did just that.
I have a 2011 AT2020 usb and works perfectly fine . However it doesnt sync in well with my scarlett 2i2 interface . Ive ordered the same one but XLR so it can go straight in . Hopefully that solves the delay. But nevertheless the mic itself works flawless despite a decade old.
I just bought the audio technica at2020usb+. Do I need to plug it into a computer and get my sound using an app like audacity? Is there any way I can hear the projection without recording first. I would really like to be able to live sing and hear the projection while I use the microphone...
Definitely more hard plosives on the AT2020 than the Rodes. Of course, the Rodes Procaster has the built in pop filter. Would be interesting to hear the AT2020 with a pop filter.
Thank you for the review! One question: is Audio Technica AT2020 good for recording acoustic guitar? Of course I'll place it right in front of my instrument. Thanks!
What's with the high pitch distortion? Sounds as bad as my neweer nw700 am also getting this bzzzz distortion in high frequencies , wonder what that is . Came here looking for an alternative but honestly it seems to sound just as bad :/
It has nothing to do with the camera. The lens I am using that allows that blur is the Sigma 18-35MM F1.8 The F1.8 (F Stop) is the amount of light the lens lets in and it since it lets in more light the there is a smaller focus range creating the blur around the subject in focus.
Hey, im doing a home studio build off my laptop (yoga 2), any suggestions for a non tech savvy noob? Looking for mic, headphone & audio interface sugggestions. Sometimes ive steered clear of "packages" like these, i always thought it's like lumping together a bunch of extra stuff that isnt very good quality lol, But maybe I'm wrong? Cheers.
I JUST BOUGHT MINE. Its hard to find and amazon sellers got a mark up. I would say were I bought mine but I need there to be a a replacement if any issues a rise.. I am sure if I say, them too would be sold out.
I use one, I think it's good for everything I do, make videos, discord calls and just chatting. Although I do have complaints, like how I have to have a secondary program to make the microphone louder
I bought it for 199$ and it was delivered today and now it is 169$ and you are saying to not buy overprice i feel totally stupid tbh. So before buying it make sure to check for other prices or wait incase the price changes.
Tech Examined i had to wait two weeks at it was out of stock and if i return it i will have to wait again as it says out of stock aswell. I just think the company is stupid for changing and changing the price. But for next time i wont buy something without making sure. I talked to an associate and she told me to return it but i just think is too much work lol.
My buddy gave it to me with the mic when I bought it from him... The amazon link is www.amazon.com/BSW-RE27POP-Pop-Filter-RE27/dp/B011SRQ24G/ref=cm_cr_arp_d_product_top?ie=UTF8 But it's out of stock... B&H Photo's website is down. I think that's were he got it
Thanks for the shout dude! This is a pretty killer mic! I've always been in awe about the quality you get for the price. Audio Technica did it right with this one!
Hey bro! So i got this at2020 mic and one thing that makes me confused is the sensivity of the mic, everytime i doing a recording i always hear a lot of noise, although i placed a pop filter it doesn't work, also i can hear someone knocking through my door lol, any advice there bro?
I learned that when a seller sells something for a higher price on Amazon some companies have their prices adjusted according to the highest price. It's such BS...
im curious about the arm you have for the procaster mic. where can i get one? been looking for a minimalistic looking arm that doesnt show any kind of springs and whatnot
Thats the yellowtec Mika mic arm.. they are about 350 bucks... I know there is a much less expensive name Blue Compass Boom arm. It’s about 99 bucks.. be sure to check out some RU-vid reviews of each and see what works for you..
why are you telling people they 'can' talk into a side address microphone into the top and back? What's the purpose? You 'can' talk into it stood on your hands too, why would anyone do that and why would it make sense to tell them they can? Just curious.
Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 is great www.amazon.com/Focusrite-Scarlett-Audio-Interface-Tools/dp/B07QR73T66/ref=sr_1_1?crid=1B6SNHNZNNBTW&dchild=1&keywords=scarlett+2i2&qid=1591139354&sprefix=scarl%2Caps%2C201&sr=8-1
@@techexamined just an interface. One that is not over the top and also not a cheap knockoff. Perfectly balanced for the AT2020 performance and budget wise
Jason Chua There is a smaller version of the Focusrite Scarlett called the solo 2x2 USB audio.. it’s on B&H for 109.00 bucks.. it’s backordered of course but you might find it somewhere else
Here's a simple answer. Some microphones need an external source of power, and some don't. Condenser mikes like the AT2020 need a voltage source. Long ago, the industry standardized on 48 volt DC power. To avoid needing an additional wire in the mic cable, this voltage is superimposed on the audio wires. Hence, "phantom power" because there's no separate wire to carry power. The bottom line is if you're going to use a mic that needs phantom power, it has to be plugged into a preamp, board, mixer, adaptor, whatever, that provides this 48 volt power to the mic. Otherwise it won't work. It won't hurt anything, but the mic won't produce a signal without power. Make sense?
