The Albanese government is gambling on a new generation of drone ships to support a new class of 11 frigates as the navy’s core response to the rise of China.
The sweeping plan would result in the navy’s surface fleet rising from 11 to 20 major combatants in addition to six large drone-style “optionally crewed” vessels.
But because of the mothballing of two ageing Anzac frigates, one now and one in 2026, it will not be until the early 2030s that the navy’s size will grow larger than it is today. And it will not be until the mid to late 2030s that Australia finally gets a significant boost in firepower and warships.
So how does that impact our defence prospects? Cameron Stewart and Greg Sheridan join The Front's Claire Harvey to discuss.
