The block in my Malibu is a Speedmaster Cast Iron severe duty block with billet main caps. We’ve built 2 engines out of them and they held up very good.
@theoldmansgarage
@theoldmansgarage Год назад
Also, the Speedmaster block doesn’t require taller lifters. They use standard lifters. Easier to get when you need them, and they can come in and out without pulling the heads

Man I'm really digging these engine related episodes Chief and Jackie! Brings back some good old memories. If two bores side by side are both 4.185 on a std 4.400 bore CL sbc, that leaves .215 between the cyl to seal the head gasket, which is plenty AFAIK. Now bore one of the holes another .020 @ 4.205, you'd only have .010 less @ ~.205 between the cyl's. Bore stability becomes a real concern though and more so on nitrous. It would likely have pretty crappy ring seal under full power with the bores moving around. In my mind, a 4.185, 4.4 bore CL sbc would be questionable for a high power nitrous deal. If that block proves savable on the main line, I'd sleeve the 4.205 hole and fill the block up to the water pump holes min, as a band aid before it's honed. Better yet consider switching it to methanol and fill the block all the way up to the deck.
@jmr1970
@jmr1970 Год назад
Chief, this guy is on the right track to sleeve over size cylinders. If your patching for now to put the money towards the rotating assy. Would be money well spent based on a Chinese block or any newer blocks. Love you and Jackie videos
@supertunesupertune
@supertunesupertune Год назад
I would not re-sleeve the 4.205 cylinder unless it's broken... this will disturb the cylinders on each side too much and make them worse. Filling is a good idea either water pump hole on gas or full deck on methanol. Use a diamond plateau hone finish if possible. Set 2nd ring +.005 over the top ring and just reuse old rings so you don't have to buy multiple sets. Don't be too worried if the rings end up on the big side with Nitrous . .035 top and .040 2nd still will be ok with good breather system. Try and get .0028 on main clearance and .0025 on the rods as close as you can. I'm still building race engines at 63 (40 years +)
@Jeffsa12
@Jeffsa12 Год назад
@@supertunesupertune I'm sure his machinist would know how to finish the cylinders for whatever rings he decides to go with. Good point on the sleeves with siamese bores though. Sleeving could lead to disruption/distortion and weakening the interface/structural integrity of the adjacent bores. Seems we agree on filling the block though. Old retired guy here. Worked as a machinist in aerospace and ran an automotive machine shop. Built and dynoed my fair share of race engines over the years as well.

Sorry to say, oil starvation caused this chain of events. #4 is the last to get oil. You starve #4 main to the point of Bronze, you kill #7 rod. Once the rod bearing disintegrates, the piston travels further in both directions. Now it's hitting the counterweights at BDC and valves and the cylinder head at TDC. If it doesn't rip the pin out of the piston on the bottom, it will hit the head on the compression stroke to the point it wants to stop the crank in it's tracks, bends the crank, and ejecto-mundo the rod. Especially at rpm. During overlap, It hits the open valve to the point of wanting to push it back up through the rocker and snaps the tips off the aluminum rockers. With steel rockers, it wants to bend pushrods...It doesn't take much for all of this to happen, as you were aware of when it first starting "acting" different. Will always give clues. Snowball effect, it all stemmed from starving #4 main. If it happened just like this before you got it, and it happened again while you have it, the issue lies in the current oil system. A few things I look for when I see this: -How much oil is being run? -Oil drainback. -Returns at the back of the heads? -Return in the valley? -Windage tray? And if so, ample return to the pickup? -is the pickup isolated in the pan? -Type of pump? Geroter or spur gear? -Windage -Aeration due to Windage or too much oil? -How much vacuum is being pulled at rpm? Oil pressure doesn't equal oil volume. 2 different things. Checking oil pressure at the back of the engine doesn't tell the whole story of what's going on up front. As for the block. It's very common for guys running nitrous to have slightly different bore sizes, as they only repair what is needed at the time of failure. It has seen it's fair share. However, wall thickness is NOT the issue with these blocks, as they are usually .250" thick at 4.200". I build A LOT of big inch small blocks at that bore and larger. At 4.250", they are still about .200" thick, which is plenty. Don't ever go by the "recommended" max bore size. BUT, the issue becomes sealing area for the gasket. BIG nitrous, you don't want a lot less than about .200" between cylinders. It also depends on how you are sealing it. A good setup can see roughly .185"-.190" before you start having real issues. 4.210" is the limit with nitrous for me, a small block at 4.250" is the limit for NA in a 4.400" bs block. Boost is where you really limit the bore for gasket sealing benefits.

@@justinshearer3016 it looked like that was a Dart little M? Those blocks have a priority oil system, all the mains are supposed to get the same amount of oil, I’m not sure how well it works. I ran a little M for a long time. I just used the block up. I went to a 4.185 bore max. If third holes are 4.200, that block is on borrowed time. I have never had oiling issues at all with my block, I had about 9 years of hard nitrous use on it too. I have the iron eagle block now. It’s a 461 small block. 4.250 stroke with 6.125 rod. With lots and lots of squeeze, 14 degree canted valve heads. It’s pretty snotty. Again no oiling issues so I’m not sure what happened to your motor, with that one bearing it sure like there was lack of oil in that one journal, but who’s to say. I hope get er going soon and good luck

Thanks for telling the rest of the story...once those bearings straitened out the tangs and start to spin (who knows, bad line bore, too quick a rebuild job, clearances too tight or flat out not checked, rods not checked and resized after replacing rod bolts on the big end, or an unprimed startup in too cold weather when all the parts are shrunken to closest tolerances), the welding job began and extreme heat began radiating outward from 7 to 8, to Main 4 in a cascade eventually leading to the bent crank (no telling if it was bent slightly in a prior repair, not checked and just reused either), and each bore being differently fixed at different times (shown by the different bore sizes according to your detailed measuring), that block has been through hell and back a few times. Once he line bores it properly and balances the internals to match, new crank and hones the cylinders to custom match each piston overbore (since it appears you have the necessary pistons to correctly fill each hole, new rods and crank going in, and he only needs to match up 1 piston to bore as the other 7 are still appear useable from your inventory, and 1 main cap to repair, bearings and seals and reassembly and mild machining otherwise), it is a budget rebuild vs a new block and all new internals. It will be a fine spare in emergency use backup, you can quickly use for content while her other bullet waits for parts and to be completed, and get it again lined out, and know what it would do when and if you need to use it later. Hopefully the timing works perfectly for both of you this time, and it stays together, you get all motor pulls, a few spray pulls, a decent working tune that you can depend on and lots of data with no oiling issues. And that her parts come in and the other engine is completed in the meantime, so you can pull that 1 out whole and working, as I agree it may do even better than what it did since you already have a good data head start on the tune (as long as you pay strict attention to where that cam was installed last time...am sure you did keep great notes since you even re-checked rod clearances on the disassembly). Degreeing that cam to get close to the prior install will be key to using that prior data correctly as you know. He is right, proper balance of the reciprocating mass internally and proper clearances (main and rod bearings, piston to bore, ring gaps, etc), and that block will not even know the bores/pistons are all different sizes, though you will know if you do a compression check of each hole as combustion chambers at installed height heads on and torqued will vary slightly, though no more than a factory small block that has never been machined. Head combustion chambers that have received no work especially cast alum heads upon proper ccing will often show as much as a 2-3 cc difference between chambers, so there is that, and (I run a Stocker and we cannot touch the combustion head chamber at all, so no changing that mfg issue)...I have not done so on mine, but am sure since we can bore cylinder over to 80 thou over and still be within our ruleset before a block is out of compliance and unusable, but rest assured I am sure someone in the past has figured out the way to balance out the smaller head chamber cc issue to larger is to overbore only specific cylinders to even out and match cylinder to head volumes exactly on purpose and still stay within the very specific extreme ruleset we bought into and still take full advantage, where yours is just by former/current breakage and repair. Here is wishing your path on that repair is smooth for you both, and think you will already be getting showered with valves, call Billy and see what uncle Bob has on his shelves, as I am sure he has a bunch and may have just what you need.

@@justinshearer3016 Well, maybe someone needs to hook Jackie up with a Dry Sump for Christmas, for her real/final motor that is still safe, outside the car waiting for parts ;) Just think, you guys won't have to run a seperate vac pump then. THAT's gotta be a positive ;)

WOW where did you find a Heinz 57 engine at I haven't seen one in years. That's a sure sign of two things 1 short on money and can't do things right because of it. 2 Joe blow engine rebuild from under the shade tree built the engine and said on it's like new and will work I am only selling it because I got a new motor because I screwed this one up. . I have done the same thing back in the day and a win even 25 runs was good but as I got older and smarter all that changed and my car would sit for I hate to say it but some times 15 weeks waiting on me to get the money gathered up to fix it the right way. Then I found out how it felt to win more passes the lose. It's better to fix it right than to patch things up I know money is tight but if it breaks it cost more. Good luck hope it works out for you. Take care stay safe.

if we install new rings, ill have her put it on the brake a couple times to load the rings and use non synthetic oil for the first trip out. My usual break in procedure for drag racing engines is start it up and put it on the brake a few times, and its ready to pull the trigger

@@MidwestStreetCarsAuto I watched the previous videos. 5 passes yeah that engine has/had oiling issues before and repaired and sold. As far as the rockers go have you been regularly checking them? I ran both brands in the past but can't remember if it was the jesel or td but one of them I constantly inspected and after a short time 2 broke

I had a engine go bad 8000rpm 383, looks like the No. 2 main cap spun a bearing. Rod got a little hot, but bearings actually looked OK. Bought a new crank and had another block (mid 70s 350 4 bolt main) and had it machined to match the pistons. Best I can tell, the NO. 2 main cap walked a bit. The machine shop that did the new work likes to stake the caps to ensure they are tight so hopefully that doesn't happen again. So, $1200 or so to get the new block ready. $600 for a new chi-com crank. New rings, clean the pistons, check the rods.... I'm going to lower the rpms a bit and run a big block oil pump. BTW, the old crank looked good, probably could have been fixed .010 or .020 under - but I had it mag'd and it showed a crack right at the radius. It is now a boat anchor somewhere.

Well..there are two scenarios where this happens,oil starvation or bearing clearance.Judging by the condition of all the other bearings (not great but a whole lot better than #4) oiling isn't the best but I'm going with clearance issues.That crank was bent all along.Chief got scammed when he bought this engine and the seller knew about it..nuff said

After watching the video and listening to everything I would ask has the block had a sleeve in it at some point? What did the cam bearings look like. Based on what I've seen I'm bettin on oil pump failure, and if the main bore's are not exactly the same,, did someone replace a main cap an try some ol school shade tree let's just hand file it , to get it back together? I hate to be negative but I'm thinking whoever ya got that motor from knew it was worn out, theirs no way they couldn't have. With all the inconsistentsies , I hate it for ya but sounds like ya may need to choke somebody out! Best of luck to y'all, I really hope ya get her back together soon. D.M.

Hey Big Chief love the video. You and Jackie and the cats always make me laugh 😂... Yeah another thing when you bore the cylinder over so much and I know you have to correct stuff but it can make the motor overheat because the cylinders get so thin. But I know you got to do what you got to do just to get by I feel you I wish I had some valves for you. God bless you Big Chief we love you brother 👍
