Is The Blug Guitar Nano Speaker Better Than My Celestions?

Comparing a Celestion Heritage 30 and Vintage 30 to the proprietary Blug Nano Cab speaker. Some thoughts and some isolated examples using a Sennheiser E 609 cabinet mic.
I like the Blug Speaker but just wanted to try something for the hell of it. You know how it is!

Very tasty Video, Ben! From your playing I understand why you like the Celestion Heritage, as it’s a bit smoother. I’m after smooth sounds with sparkling highs that still have a bite when playing rock - all at giging volume. That’s maybe a thing that is hard to achieve as most of these parameters are opposite things. Anyway my personal preference in the Nanocab would be a greenback, but I killed already 4 of those in Nanocabs and Fatcabs myself. Unfortunately a single greenback is not suitable to the handle power that is needed for (at least my style of) giging. Our BluGuitar speaker handles 60 Watts and 120 Watts peak power. That’s still matches our AMP1 with its 100 Watts... ...and here we have the next contradiction: how smooth can you get a speaker that handles more power...;-) I’m happy with our speaker and the compromises and especially that our speaker is not getting fizzy at lower volumes, keeping its character at different volumes from very Lo to hi. But I’m totally happy if you’d play a greenback or heritage in our Nanocab as long as it makes you happy! Guitar Tones and playing will always be a very personal thing. Thomas Blug Ps. 1) That BluGuitar speaker (like almost any speaker) is getting smoother when being played... 2) keep on doing those great videos!

Thanks for the comment, Thomas! I really dig your gear. I bought the Nano a good while back for small gigs, but haven't needed my bigger cab since. The band never fail to take the piss out of the dinky size when you rock up at a gig with it, but everyone has complimented the sound! The Greenback would be my preference I think (though I've never actually tried one in this cab), but you've just confirmed what I thought in the video, which is that it'd be too easy to blow a single one. (My amp is 250 watt) I've left the Heritage in there for now, but I do worry about its power handling. Fortunately/unfortunately most of my gigs are to one man and his dog, so it's not really getting pushed too hard, haha! Anybody reading this or watching the video should keep in mind that I bought the Nano Cab because I liked the way it sounded originally, I'm just experimenting with stuff. Also keep in mind that as Thomas says, if you drive the speaker harder it will become smoother, but the neighbours will also become angrier, it's a compromise! Thanks again, Ben.

When I bought my 2x12 Palmer Cab loader with vintage 30s I went into the store wanting to by the BluGuitar FatCab. Notably, I only wanted a 1x12 cabinet. But upon trying out the FatCab as well as the Nanocab I didn't like the topend at all. Preferred the Nanocab, but still. I found this interesting because I dig Thomas tone a lot when I hear him live. I compared the sound to the Palmer and ended up buying that because I preferred the tone. I guess this is a lesson in: You got to try stuff yourself before you buy.

I've not had a chance to try the Fatcab, but I've heard it's very good. Likewise I've not heard Thomas play live and I've heard he's very good too! You're right, it's definitely a case of trying what works for you, with your particular setup and in a live environment if you can. I borrowed a Thomann own brand 1x12 for a gig before looking at the Blug. The price was very appealing, but the sound wasn't right for me.

I like the Blug Speaker a lot, but sometimes you get the urge to modify and tweak your setup for no reason whatsoever. Ben

What amp are play through ? Would be nice to know.

I can't remember, but I would think I was playing through my DV Mark GH250 and using a Barber Burn Unit for gain. That's been my most used rig for the last few years. Also, because it's solid state, I wouldn't mind turning it on and off a lot for making a video like this one. Cheers, Ben.
