It is not true that it won't make photos any better. Technology has objectively made people's photos better. Some types of photography may not benefit a lot from technological improvements but most do, and some do tremendously.

Buying an R6 and a 28-70mm f2 is the single biggest improvement I have ever made in my photography. Getting a perfectly in focus image is soooooo important. So sometimes it makes a huge difference.

Not mutually exclusive. Knowing what you need from learning fundamentals and, from there, acquiring the correct kit is actually massively important. Go shoot indoor basketball with an X100vi and a pro body + 70-200/2.8 and see what happens.

Lies, if you have an old DSLR, I am not saying you can't make good pictures, you can but with newer and improved tech it becomes easier to capture those moments as they are faster and more reliable (AF). Not to mention going from something like a 45-61 focus point all cramped up in the center to thousands around the whole screen is literally life changing

A nearly perfect camera... that has reliability issues?! Are you serious? I'd never buy a camera that randomly decides to stop working and I have to remove e reinsert the battery to make it work again... It's just a joke... Really unacceptable QA from Canon too...

Sadly I bought it before we knew about the crashing. Firmware updates were supposed to address it but really never did. I sold it about a month ago but I really never took it on shoots that I needed to get the shot. My Sony A7RV (and IV) might be a boring tool to some people but they just get the job done when I need it.

@@barryscully1820 yeah, at the end of the day, a camera is a tool, and if it doesn't get the job done, then it's paperweight... it's mindbogglingly that my mom's 45yo Pentax ME Super is more reliable than a modern $4k camera... and that Pentax travelled 4 continents 😂

@@IoRobot_98 I know, I never expected that from the R5 as I had been using Canon cameras for nearly 20 years without hardly ever having an issue. This was quite disappointing and a significant reason that most of my money has gone to Sony over the last few years. I've kept my old EF lenses and my 5DS but I have only bought one rf lens.

As I stated, it has never caused me to miss anything. I have shot thousands of photo shoots with these cameras. Funny thing is it never happened until after I bought the back up camera. They have always done what I need them to do. So for me not a deal breaker and “almost perfect” They are great cameras. If I were shooting other events or like others wildlife once in a lifetime shots with it. I would not be using this camera. Honestly did not know this was a known issue and am surprised it has not been addressed by Canon ( though I do have to update the firmware ) All that being said the camera and lenses are the best performing for my business I have used. So nearly perfect for me.

@@Distphoto I get you, but to me, a camera is always a tool to capture "once in a lifetime" moments, because we never know when they will happen, and that's what I find unacceptable about that camera, a piece of equipment made solely to capture moments that we'll never see again that sometimes decides to give you the middle finger and not do that... it's absurd to me, like a wheel that randomly decides not to roll 😂, but I can see how not everyone can experience this problem the same way I do...

AI wizardry isn't photography. It might work for professionals producing fake (better-looking) images for their clients faster and easier. But this is not what I'm buying expensive camera gear for.

Bring it on. AI and tech only push me further towards analogue. Actually, the best thing camera companies can do for me is reduce the number of options available - I hate hunting around in submenus, so less and not more, please.

your complaints about battery life and the crashing are the reason I sold my R5. I couldn't rely on the camera for the type of nature photography I do as it often crashed just as the action was happening missing the crucial moment. Everything else about the camera was good (although I still want a camera with a stacked sensor so that silent shooting becomes the norm). For now my 500f/4 will stay in the closet until I decide if the R5 II is worth picking up. Luckily I have my Sony A7RV and a long lens that really never fails me. So if the R5 II doesn't end up being what I want might finally pick up a big prime for the Sony and hope the A1 comes down in price as that is still the best one for me (that I can't justify buying).

I did not even know this was a common issue with the R5… the crashing, thought it was just mine, but more people have chimed in a bout this. Surprised I did not hear more about it. The Canon glass is something keeping me for sure. Battery life is so annoying. Considering looking over Sony’s way again, the A1 does look impressive. Will have to wait and see on the releases!

@@Distphoto for whatever it's worth, my R5 locked up on a hot day once (105F temperature that day), and maybe one other time? Perhaps I've been lucky? Or others unlucky...

I use my R5 mainly for weddings and events and the only time I've had it lock up was when I had a bad SD card or when the battery is going flat. I used to shoot Sony, but I had lots of problems with them and this is why I now shoot Canon.

I have to disagree regarding your assessment of R5 regarding locking up. If that’s continuously happening to you then there’s an issue with your camera body. I own two R5’s and I’ve never had one lock up on me during a shoot or a wedding and my batteries actually last a long time. During a long day wedding I may go through 1 1/2 batteries. I’d say your camera body is the issue.

You could be right, however quite a few people have now said they have experienced the same thing. I would guess it has happened 5 or so times in probably around a thousand portrait sessions, so not sure I would say this is continuously happening but it does not surprise me much when it does happen. Plus I also have two bodies and each has done it… so a couple times each one included the messed up sd card. The battery life is definitely not as good as the Sony and other Canon cameras I’ve had. Very noticeably. I have never looked into lower power settings used the screen less etc. but never did with any of my others as well. Mostly I would expect better battery life as the cameras “get better” not worse. I was in contact several times with Canon and they said one of the codes was a lens contact issue. But everything was brand new. Detaching and reattaching lenses or popping out the battery has worked in getting it shooting again. I admittedly am pretty hard on my gear but again nothing different from other cameras I have had with out the issue. Still love the cameras.

I just bought the R5 on a great discount. I'll bet the R5 MKII will be great, but the R5 is an awesome camera already and right now it's more affordable. I own a R6mkII which probably will stay my bird-camera with the RAW-Burst etc. I've ordered a RF 200-800 and waiting for months. Still waiting. And that really sucks. So even if the R5 MKII will be announced, it'll might take ages until you can hold it in your hands. So I'm fine with the "old" tech

@@Distphoto I ordered my R5 in the light of summer in August 2020. It eventually arrived a few days before Christmas, right on the darkest days of the year (55°North). Frustration didn't begin to describe my feelings. I had slightly better luck with my 200-800. Ordered on the morning of the first day of announcement, 2 November 2023, it arrived on 2nd February, 'only' three months, and I was one of the lucky ones. They are still as rare as hen's teeth. Canon really needs to stick a foot up the marketing department if they can't anticipate demand (as they claimed as an excuse), or more likely that they can't ramp up production to what is needed (more likely).

I have owned several high end Canon cameras Mk IV, 5Ds, R6, and now R6 II. And I actually miss my MK IV & 5Ds in optimal lighting Studio and on Location The 5Ds is still A UNTOUCHABLE BEAST. And I still at times miss my EOS 1N. Coming from a 50 mp down to 24 is still a challenge at and will buy R5 when the R5 II comes out. The R5 price will drop like Lead in water. Like you no urgency to get it. IT’S THE PERSON NOT EQUIPMENT THAT CREATE… KNOW YOUR GEAR THEN SEE YOUR POTENTIAL...

Photography is a process and an art. You have to know a lot technically to tell the camera what you want it to do. AI takes rules and applies them to get a good picture. You have little input into what and how it does what it does with AI. It will raise the level of the average person. It will not replace a good photographer who knows how to use the equipment. It will tend to make the same decisions over and over creating a standardized look of photos.

They can definitely improve focusing and use AI to detect specific subjects and know who they are when in frame. Sony does this, but I haven't played with it much. It's an extra step when doing so. You have to take a pic of the subject, register them, etc. AI can skip all this.

I embrace all the new tech cause it allows me to afford the old. yep going to pick up a R5 to put manual lenses on it cause I am, mostly, done with Leica after 35 years of M. I want the Canon for two things- sensor and color and the eye auto assist in manual focus. Sick!!

Guys, just stfu. Some of you whining here in comments, just because u cant afford it that doesnt u have to promote analog bullshit. Yeah, for most of you, analog is way to go because you dont earn money out of it. When you have to work 6 7 hours of gig, obviously u need powermachine which can get job done. Obviously no analog can deal with it unless you do portfolio gig for free. If it is paid, believe me you are gonna regret your life. For paid gigs we need fast, reliable machines. Of course for hobby any analog or cheap dlsr can do job. But this is about paid gigs

What you think about AI is what I think about Photoshop. It just to much. I see Photoshopping photo's as AI. It's funny when it comes full circle. The R5II's released specs won't get me to buy one. Nor will the R1's. R5ii's specs are mostly video centric. I don't shoot video. I figure they'll fix the focus with backlighting issue the R5 has. I hope. Others will chime in it's fine. Put the setting sun on your subjects shoulder, use around a 1200watt power pack in a 120 focusable parabolic to light them. Now try to get focus. Good luck. I never used 1dx as i'm not a war photographer or sports. I have zero need or want for a R1's restrictions of reduced MP for performance. I want larger files for portraits and ability to print 24x36 from my files. RIght now, even the R5 doesn't do that great either. You need a Fuji 100mp. The whole reason a 5ds R upgrade would be wonderful after 10 freeking years.

Yes, I have 1 sony and have used a few... To small for me but they are great.. thinking of going over again... For me the user experience was not so great. Image quality was very good. Just did not enjoy shooting as much. Though I feel that way about the Canon Mirrorless as well. I'll have to wait and see.

Yes - the sensor by itself (outside of improved rolling shutter for those who need it) won’t give better photos/videos - But the improved autofocus will give more keepers. The improved cooling might be useful for videographers.

@@Distphoto Also the R5C did not have sensor stabilization. If the cooling solution works out - it could prove revolutionary for videographers shooting in the high quality 4K modes (or 8K for those rare 8K shooters). I could definitely see Sony and Nikon tearing this thing apart in their labs - to get the cooling into their hybrid cameras.

As far as ergonomics, it needs to get the R3 body. There is zero reason this and the upcoming R5C II should not have a better battery. This is also the lowest-end pro body and it should be gripped in my opinion. I hope they retain the mechanical curtain shutter, and probably will, at least until they perfect global shutters.

I do not see it getting the R3 body it would be pretty cool. They NEED a better battery or more efficiency in these. That to me is the number one complaint. The R5 C must be even worse.

I used the R5 for a couple years. My biggest gripe is the fold out screen. Shooting sports or events with lots of people, I was always annoyed when I needed to use the camera high or low I had to flip out the screen making it vulnerable to being busted off by someone bumping it. The flip out screen is fine for vloggers and people that shoot everything in low angle portrait orientation. I would much rather have a flip up/down screen that doesn’t stick out to the side. I bailed on Canon after 15 years solely for that reason. I’ll go back if they ever realized that.

Honestly, if you cannot make great photographs with any camera made in the last 10 years then you lack skills. I find authenticity important in my own pictures and enjoy creating the techniques in order to achieve that.

I'll only upgrade from my current r5 if the sensor is BSI, helping with noise and light capture. If it doesn't have that, no need for me to upgrade. I shoot landscapes, so don't need fast shutter.

I think we have a real problem with photography consumption in that we are all obsessed with 100% zooms on everything. We are judging focus and sharpness based on a few thousand pixels out of 10s of millions. if all we judge is the finest detail level, then there is no end to the megapixel race, and the ever better tech needed to get the most out of it. I think over half my photography is of dogs. We have big group dog walks every month, and I take my old Oly OM1n, a long lens, and usually some 400iso B&W. My eyes are pretty bad, I doubt I nail focus ever by most peoples pixel peeped definitions. Still, people love the photos, I occasionally do darkroom prints of them as gifts, with the inevitable dust spots and hairs that come with that (I have a pretty constrained set up). The point being, we need to get back to judging the whole picture, not the pixels.

I just started watching so I I don't know of the benefits / no so benefits. I am so vested in L glass for my ID MKII and older cameras I've stayed away from the R series. I am not a studio / wedding / event photographer though.

I think I enjoy the experience of shooting with the slats more. But the focusing systems do make it super easy to nail focus estate small aperatures. But is that’s not something you need than I would stay with what you have honestly. The R glass is insanely sharp but I often prefer my EF lenses 🤷🏻‍♂️. Glad they adapt and work extremely well on the R bodies…

Each and every camera manufacturer will outdo the others. They all have their turn. Can the average photographer switch every time the latest "perfect camera" hits the market? Of course not. For now, my perfect camera is the Sony A7RV (expensive, I know), even though I know it will be bettered by other cameras. I don't give a flying $#@%& to be honest. LOL I'm not a pro and I don't do video much and I know I'm not the only one. So, all the talk about which camera is best at video, I'm like... meh!!! LOL That being said, thanks for the video. It's well done!

Well…. Not really here. Sony produced the A9 with a stack sensor in April 2017. 24 mp and 20fps. It was not until 4.5 years later that Canon released their stack sensor in the r3 with 24mp and 30fps. The Sony A1 perfected the stack sensor to 50mp and 30fps months before canon r3 at 24mp. The global shutter in the Sony a9 iii in Nov 2023 is much ahead of anything we have seen or heard yet from Canon. The R1 is still in dev and the rumors point to yet another stack sensor. While a stack sensor is good, the holy grail is the global shutter and I expect the next Sony A1 will arrive with an even more improved global shutter at about the same time we see the R1. Really not much leap frogging has occurred in the camera industry for some time now and sadly does not appear to be anytime soon. With camera sales lagging globally, I would not anticipate huge R&D from any of the camera manufacturers.

Thank you, appreciate the feedback! I get a bit excited about new video features, but then struggle to figure it all out and hold the camera steady 😂. Mostly in it for the stills like you. That Sony A7RV is a beast!

I’ve owned an R5 since its inception and love everything about it. I am an amateur photographer and shoot landscapes and animal photography. I heard rumors that the M II would be able to capture footage of action that took place fractions of seconds before the shutter was released. That would be the only reason I would upgrade. Have you heard anything regarding this? 9:37

No but with all the tech advances does not seem out of reach at all! That would be cool. Was just shooting a swimmer yesterday and that would have been helpful 👍

Future of photography: Smartphones and AI. Future of cameras: global shutter, anything else is a step into yesterday. Canon photo future: subscriptions, stack sensors, and declining market share. Canon has a huge opportunity in alternate technologies - mainly computer chips, but they are trailing in camera tech. Sony A1 is ~ 4years old and still rivals anything Canon will release let alone what they currently have.

@@Distphoto me too. I’m a hobbyist and paying subscriptions for a hobby is not my desire. Even if I was a pro I would seriously consider the options. Subscriptions for hardware will be a bad thing for Canon, but my guess is they will want to learn that the hard way. If they can produce software that can greatly increase productivity then perhaps it will succeed, but if it’s simply to pay for firmware or use features, they will watch their sales drop off a cliff.

Battery life is a factor that has kept me, with my 5D IV and 2 spare batteries, away from mirrorless. I assumed Canon had resolved the problem and was eagerly waiting for the R5 II. Useful reminder, so thank you.

The r6 mk 2 has tremendous battery (prob 2000 pics) if you map screen saving and sleep to buttons. You should consider that. They are not mapped by default. I suppose the r5 should have that with the latest firmwares

Perhaps as a film only user I am the wrong person to comment. I am sure it will be loved & worshipped by many but will it make your photography better? Is all the updates needed or only needed to sell the product? With thought it seems to make analogue more & more appealing when control is in your hands not in the camera/computer.
