@@vedig I didn't have trouble with it being fast enough while shooting sports with my normal lenses. The only problem I encountered with it not focusing fast enough was shooting with an 85 prime lens, but that lens focuses slowly so it wasn't an issue with the camera, just the lens.
Yuzi Drexel Personally for me right now I prefer my 1Dx ii over an R6. I believe the R6 is a great camera and a better value for sure. But for shooting action sports I prefer the 1dxii. I’ve never tried a Sony.

Yuzi Drexel I go through the specifics of why I still prefer my 1Dx ii over the R5 for sports photography in the video. But basically higher mechanical shutter frame rate and I didn’t see much improvement for the number of in focus shots. If I could only buy one new camera to use for a variety of shoots it’d probably be an R5. But there’s no reason for me to switch now as I have three good camera bodies that work well.
Hi Paul. I just upgraded to the R5 from the 7DmkII. I shoot sports, high school soccer & field hockey. Tried out the eye detection auto focus for tracking and found that the system would jump from players close together and not stay on my target player. Changed to Face detection and same issue. So I went with the single point and that worked better for me. So the eye detection and face detection is great as long as there is one person in the frame that you want to track or players are spaced apart. But in a group, or when the players mix it up on the field, the camera may switch from your target player. This is my experience so far, but it is a work in progress as I learn the new system. Definitely and big upgrade for me from the 7DmkII. But, when it works, the tracking is incredible! I also stayed with the mechanical shutter. 20 fps is sweet to capture so much, but that is a lot of pictures and memory.
Other photographers have mentioned setting up two back button focusing buttons, one with regular single point and the other using eye detection which sounds like it'd be very helpful to you. I'm sure it'd take a game or two to get used to, but would be very beneficial. I can't imagine shooting an entire game at 20 fps! You'd probably need 10 memory cards!
Leonard, how did I like the 7d2 for sports? I need a backup & 2nd body for my 1DX3 & was looking at it. I had the Mark 1 years ago before I switched over to the 1DX line. I heard it’s a huge upgrade but I also like the crop feature so I can leave my 300 2.8ii on the 1DX3 & either my 70-200 2.8 or 24-70 to get some xtra reach. I was mostly concerned about shooting for sports since has I believe 10 or 12fps.

Hi Paul, I shoot primarily sports and my 7D mark ii is starting to slow down. Now that you have been using the r5 for awhile, what's the battery situation like for shooting a game? I've seen several negative reviews on battery life. Thank you!
I've got a battery grip on it for me and I haven't had any issues so far. It also isn't the only camera I use so maybe if it was the primary body it be different. But I think it'd last an entire game on two batteries in a grip.
Electonic shutter speed will always be consistent regardless of f/stop settings being in live mode. On mechanical shutter, another story. The FPS will slow down in proportion to the f/stop setting. A wide-open aperture is the fastest with a mechanical shutter, but it takes more time for the camera body to set the lens for the smaller aperture setting, which is always wide open until the shutter is clicked. Another slight delay can be while in the servo AF and auto ISO mode as the camera is processing data for the optimum time for the shutter to open.
Thanks for the info! With the R5 you also need the newer batteries and they have to be above 60% to get the full capability of the FPS. It also needs to be paired with a newer lens. So for me it only works at top speed with my 70-200.
Very informative in helping me make a decision. My 1DX crapped out in the middle of a rehersal Burlesque show shoot two days ago. Normally I shoot outdoor Motocross, other sports when I have the opportunity and things that move such as indoor performances and wildlife. My first reaction was to get the R3. Then I looked at the R5 for less money and similar performance. Photography for me is just a hobby although I do get credentials to Pro Motocross races and have been published a few times in the leading Motocross magazine, RacerX. So, how does the R5 compare to the R3 for what I do? PS, the full burlesque show is in 6 days! 😬 Appreciate your feed back if you see this in time! Thank You!
I love both of them. The R5 is amazing for events and portraits, the R3 is great for sports. The one things about the R5 for sports is the electronic rolling shutter effect that occurs on occasion. I haven't shot motorcross with it so I can't say if it will be bad with that. But I only use the R5 as a 2nd or 3rd body for sports. Main body for events. Also the R6 is great if you don't need the megapixels and want to save more money. My wife uses it for weddings and it does a great job.
@@Paul_Rutherford Thank you for your feedback. I picked up the R5 yesterday to try out. From many reviews it seems the rolling shutter issue is only when using the electronic shutter. The mechanical shutter is good for 10-12 fps which is how my old 1DX performed and that was good enough for me. The thought of 20-30 fps had me thinking of the additional hundreds of images I would end up with after shooting a race. One thing I did notice today while shooting seagulls that was an issue is the electronic viewfinder. When I quickly put the camera up to my eye to catch a shot, the viewfinder would not be activated quick enough and I would miss the shot. I shoot like this a lot so it's a problem. Is there a way to keep the viewfinder on? I know a big drawback is going to be battery drain which seems to already be a problem with these R series cameras. Kind of makes me want to look for a newer 1DX mk ll or lll.
@@tomacquilano1304 Correct there is no rolling shutter issue with the mechanical shutter. And as long as you have newer glass you can get the 10-12 fps. Only got 6 fps on my old 400mm. I believe there is a setting to only have the viewfinder on, but then you may not be able to use the back on camera screen. Although you can change the settings so you can just turn it on when you'd need it like that.
Good to see your video! I shoot football (⚽️) as well: for me, eye AF is useless during the game. As you say: too many eyes. Good though for pre- and post-game shots. I use the new Fuji X-H2s - no problem with rolling shutter because of that new stacked sensor. High ISO is a problem with my APSC sensor - the FF R5 certainly has an advantage here - but I can work around that. Thank you for your sports videos - I really do enjoy them.
I am a hybrid shooter. I shoot with the Sony a9 and grabbed another 1DX for my second body. The focus speed and fps of the Sony is amazing. But my Canon EF lenses work better with the 1DX vs the Sony a9 with Sigma MC11 adapter. Love your work and videos.
Hi Paul, thank you for sharing your knowledge and experience. Watched carefully your video as I'm pretty much interested in action sports. I will make a decision until next December to get new equipment, and R5\6 is on the list. One question, if I may, as it is not related to the camera, but to the software (PM) that you are using and (If I got it right) you tag your pictures during the game? What were those cables attached to your laptop? Looking for fine tuning my work flow from picture taken to actually delivered. Cheers
So many great cameras out there so it'll be a tough decision, but I'm sure you'll love whatever you choose. I do tag the best photos in camera so that Photo mechanic can only import those tagged files. The cables are my card readers velcro'd to my computer. When shooting at games there isn't much space so it's better than having them dangle everywhere. I speak about my workflow a little bit in my other video a Day in the life. Hope that helps!

What telephoto lens did you use? Canon has a list of lens that support 12 fps. Additionally, you also need their new battery for 12 fps. For fast action sports, you may want to use just face tracking or zone tracking. Eye detection is good when the person is not far away. I won't use electronic shutter when panning left or right very quickly.
Yeah, from what I've seen face detection may have been better because it has a larger surface to track vs. the eye. He needed more than 2 days with the camera.
I shoot youth and college soccer professionally and the image quality is great. I am also not a fan of eye autofocus so I went back to single point expansion. I do get an oval ball in electronic shutter. due to rolling shutter.
Glad to hear its working out for you! The eye auto focus was great for a single subject. My guess is it takes a lot of time to get used to switching between the eye more and single point to take full advantage of it.
I've had issues with rolling shutter which is so bad for tennis! I'm a 1dx mkiii shooter and is still my primary body. Really disappointed with the rolling shutter on the R5. Forced to use the mechanical shutter which is slow at 12fps only. 1Dx is still the king of sports.
Agreed. I have found a lot of great uses for the R5, but not always as my primary body of choice. LOVE it as a secondary for sports and as the occasional primary.
With people switching to mirrorless, I've managed to get a super low shutter count 1Dx and a good condition 1Dx-ii, and I've seen plenty of chatter about how those bodies are outdated and I could have mirrorless for about the same cost. I've been more than pleased with the performance of these 'old' DSLR bodies. No way I'm dropping $6k on an R3....whenever they are actually available.
Do you find the 1DX to be a more satisfying shooting experience still? I find everytime I go to a mirrorless they still feel like they’re doing all the work (or trying to) and they don’t feel as good in the hand. I still want a 1DX III...am I just odd?
Haha. I know exactly what you mean! I think part of it is that you are not used to the mirrorless and the more you use it the more natural it will feel. But there is something nice about having the 1DX ii in my hands!
If you are just starting out, what's your view on going mirrorless vs non. The Rf glass is so expensive so just wanted your perspective if u did not have a camera at all and are just beginning. Thanks, love ur content keep it up
That is a tough question, but I think mirrorless is the future and if you can swing an R6 to start with it will be a great camera. I also suggest starting with a 7d, older camera so you can probably find them much cheaper. I don't own any RF lenses, but I'm sure it may be cheaper to use the adapter and find used EF lenses.
Paul, I have a question. I have a 7DII. My grandson goes to Friday night football next season. My only long lens is the Tamron 150-600 G2. Is the high ISO improvement enough to get me through, or would the money be better spent on faster glass?
I can't really answer that question since I haven't used the Tamron. It also depends on how good the stadium lights are. One thing you can try is to go to the stadium this spring if they have a night game and test it out with your current set up and see what settings you'd need to use. Then if the ISO would be super high it might make sense to invest in faster glass. If it isn't as bad then the improvement to the R5 or R6 might be enough.

Great review... I'm upgrading from a 70D soon.... And want a do it all camera that will last me a decade... And maybe help me get into some amateur shooting sessions as a side gig. Thoughts on this being my one and only? Mostly shooting amateur as ports, kids, and scenery.
First off I'd say you can get into amateur shooting session with the camera you have now and the R5 won't necessarily help with that. If you aren't making money from the images I think the R6 may be a better camera for you. It is essentially the same thing but much cheaper. The only reason I really see to get the R5 over the R6 is the megapixels and the video specs. I haven't used the R6 directly so take that with a grain of salt.
Hi Brad. I just upgraded from the 7DmkII. I shoot the same as you, amateur, high school sports. When I decide it was time for an upgrade, I decided to try the mirrorless. Stayed with Canon so that I could still use my canon lenses. Went with the R5 for primarily for the MPs. But, according to the specs, the R6 is pretty much the same except MPs. R5 did hit the wallet hard though! And I am expecting it to last me at least 5+ years. I am really happy with it so far, only had it for 2 weeks and adjusting to all the new focusing and tracking features.
Great insights. Thanks. Super timely, as I'm considering trading in my 5Dmk4 for a R5. I do do some sports shooting, mostly speed skating, and some soccer. I'd really wondered about the rolling shutter with the e-shutter. Interesting results.. I'd have to try it. Part of the reason for thinking about pivoting over, is that I think in time the EF lenses will become less desirable, and a fella should start moving towards the RF lenses. Figure if I go mirrorless/RF while the Mk4 and the EF glass is still in high demand, I'll get the most out of them. Maybe yes, maybe no. Also, I think my wife would like the smaller lighter form factor when she wants to take the camera out. Regarding the mechanical shutter, I seem to recall seeing somewhere that the Mechanical shutter gives you two potential setups in high-speed shooting: In one, you get the 12 fps performance, but you only see the last image captured in the series when you release the shutter, or 8fps, where you can track through the viewfinder.... Neither are really optimum but perhaps that's why you were only getting 8 fps.
Yea I ended up getting the R5, mainly for portrait and event work, but do love it as a second camera for sports. Figured out that the 8fps is because 12fps doesn't work with older lenses and you need to use the newer battery with over 60% battery life. I'd suggest trying it out first! and if you don't need the extra megapixels the R6 would also be a great option!
Scott Roeder just got two of those R5. He may convert me into it lol. I need play around with it though and be interested trying it out for ultimate frisbee to.
Finally looking at moving to an R5/6 for sports and found this again. The eye AF is the selling point for me. Between your comments on that and the slow frame rate on older EF, this is killing my enthusiasm. Thanks for testing it the way I would use it. I'm still not sold on single point AF, either. When that goalie bends down, you're going to lose focus with single point as well until you reframe, so is there any difference? My biggest reason for wanting eye AF is that I usually aim for the jersey since it's much easier to see in the heat of the moment. At 2.8 and faster, I sometimes notice the face is out of focus when the uniform logo is crisp. I'm shooting in great light right now, so stopping down to f/4 isn't hurting, but once we're back indoors or until lights in the fall, I'll be back where I was. Hoping the eye AF improves.
I actually ended up buying one and use it as my second camera for shooting sports. It combines the usefulness of the 7d mark ii and picture quality of the 5d mark iii in the same camera. Using it more it definitely has some advantages I didn't notice before. The 12 fps works with my newer 70-200 that I use for my second camera which is great. Honestly it is a great camera and I only like my 1Dx mark ii more for sports, but the R5 is great for everything else.

@@markkempton4579 I barely use the electronic shutter. If you don't need the higher megapixels I'd just go with the R6. I got the R5 more for portrait and event work.
If you use back button focusing, you can set up the AF-ON and * buttons to be eye-detect focus and single point focus through the button customization. It's nice having both options available on the fly depending on the scene. More distant shots seem to work better with the single point AF, but if, say, a player is coming head-on to you, you just move your thumb over and now it's focusing on eyes.
Did you use Craw or full resolution? It's good to finally get a real perspective on sports using the new body. I wonder if the focus shift where the focus jumped to the net resulted from the camera settings used? I say this because folks have reported that they have issues where they can't make the focus jump to another subject that they want to focus on when using the eye/animal detection; they had to setup a separate BB AF setting so they could quickly switch to a single spot AF point to quickly move focus to the subject they want. In other words, they said the eye/animal AF was working to well and this is with Birds in Flight, which I can say is tougher than shooting big sports athletes. I think you definitely needed more than 2 days with the camera to thoroughly test the various settings. I think it may have been the setting used that caused the focus shift...just my thoughts based on what has been reported by others and the limited time you had with the camera body. Also, doesn't the 1DX2 have limitations to hit the 14 fps? I do birds (birds in flight is tough), wildlife and sports and I am waiting for my R5 and I agree it will be an all around camera and that is why I will be selling the 7D2, 5D3 and my old 1D3 because this camera will cover what those 3 can do. I won't be replacing the 1DX or 1D4 though. I envision the new 1D mirrorless body coming in around $7k and I just won't shell out that kind of money anymore for a camera body that will be old news in 1-2 years. I'd invest in glass instead and buy the body used.
I ended up using only jpeg since that is what I shoot with most of the time. I've heard other people using two different BB focusing method and I agree I'd need more time to get a full feel for the camera, but some of the issues I had wouldn't be resolved with more time, the rolling shutter and I'd have to invest in newer glass to get the full 12 fps along with new batteries. In terms of the focus shift. If the eye focus couldn't reliably hold onto the keeper with no other people around and minimal movement then it isn't something I'd use much for game action in team sports. The two BB focus settings would be helpful, but it if the eye tracking doesn't work better than the single point it doesn't matter. I love the eye focus for everything else though and I'm sure it helps with birds in flight a lot!
@@Paul_Rutherford The rolling shutter is something I've read they all suffer to some extent. I don't plan to use 20 fps...sure I will test it out because it's there, but I don't see me using it much. The R5 will replace 2 cameras for me; the 5D3 and 7D2 and well the 1D3, too. It will be like 3 cameras in one for me; Craw for sports, full raw for wildlife and birding for deep crops and the 1.6 crop mode (replacement for 7D2) for those times when I need more perceived reach...even the 600II and 1.4 can be short some times. I'm itching for the day I can put the R5 to use on the football field. Btw, I still shoot with the 1DX. Thanks for the review using it for sports.
@@Paul_Rutherford I haven't upgraded since buying the 7D2 when it first came out, so that's been about 6 years now, so figure it's a good time. As a matter of fact, I had not even looked at the new stuff hitting the market in over 3 years, so I was way behind on the new tech out there. I don't upgrade every year or two like many of the new tech collectors out there. I contemplating buying the 1DX3, but the cost turned me off and some of the new features made me think something new was on the horizon...now we know there's going to be a mirrorless version. I think the 1DX3 was Canon's last money grab for the Dslr body. Since I still have and use the 1DX and because it still knocks sport images out the park, I figured there's no need to upgrade my main sports body. Therefore, with it's feature sets, the R5 became more attractive to me for my birding and wildlife photography and some sports, too. The R5 features and the pricing puts it right in the middle range (i.e. between the 5Ds and the 1DX3) for me. Hell, I still shoot with the 1D4. The R5 will be with me for long time.
I was a little disappointed with that as well. Honestly it wouldn't be a deal breaker for me as most images didn't show it, but it stinks to have to throw a few out.
@@LtDan907 True. I think it really depends on how quickly it moves through your frame. If the planes are small in the frame it may not have as much of an impact. You can also use the 12 fps mechanical shutter, with full battery and the right lenses, and not get any distortion.
I mostly use single point. I've gotten so used to it that I like it more. I think once you chose one you will get used to it and won't worry about it anymore.

I think the R5 is a great camera and I'd be happy if it were my workhorse camera Body. I like my 1dx mark ii better for sports action, but the R5 would probably be better for most other things I shoot. Really comes down to what you'll use it for most. If you don't need the high megapixels or crazy video specs then I think the R6 would be a great choice as well.
I just returned mine to CPS after a week. I noticed the same thing with eye focus and nets whole shooting beach volleyball. Also, I think you might be right regarding slower than 12fps- I also had the RF to EF converter and while I did not time the FPS, it didn’t feel like 12.
It was definitely only 8 FPS I tried with multiple lenses and shooting clocks as well as looking at the metadata. But I still got 20 fps with the electronic so I'm not exactly sure whats going on with it.
Dan Proskauer interesting! I hadn’t heard that before. But I also am pretty sure I was using the battery they sent me and it was full. Does it have to be with the battery grip?
@@Paul_Rutherford No - doesn't require the grip, just the new battery and decent charge. You get 12 fps when you see the H+ in green. If it is showing in white, it is 8 fps. Nothing to do with the lens or adapter or anything like that though.
None. I'm only interested in the Canon because I've been in the canon ecosytem for a while and everything I own works with them. It's hard for me to change all my gear over at this point when I like the results I'm getting from my current gear.
Was the battery life lasting as long in the R5 compared to the Canon 1dx Mark ii battery. Is the R5 camera at low light able to focus and track subjects as well as your Canon 1dx Mark ii.
So I didn't shoot long enough at the soccer game to really see. But during the fitness shoot I took 2000 images over about an hour and a half and only one of the three bars was gone. So I think it last a similar amount, probably a little less as I was using just a single battery without a grip and the 1Dx has the bigger battery in the grip. I never has any issues with the battery though.
@@Paul_Rutherford thats interesting feedback as the mirrorless cameras i used at nighttime football International games the focusing was not on par with my Canon 1dx Mark iii and Nikon D5 cameras. I had used Canon Mirrorless and nikon z6 and z7 cameras the battery life didn't inspire me and the durability and robustness is not as good as the pro dslr cameras. Newer mirrorless cameras if they produce a Canon 1dx mark iii & Nikon D5 and D6 cameras for the upcoming Olympics. I will re evaluate my views on mirrorless cameras. Currently I will stay with the pro dslr cameras for now.
@@NikCan66 The camera doesn't feel as durable, I think mainly because it's so light. I did like the build quality though and wouldn't feel bad about using it in the same ways as my other cameras. I did notice the focus didn't hold as well in the dark at times but that was mainly with the eye focus. If I could've shot a few more games with it I'd be able to make a more definitive statement on the focus but I found it worked well. I'm not switching right now, but I do think the next camera body I buy will be a mirrorless one.
@@Paul_Rutherford well for me i work from artic to desserts and humid conditions with my gear. Covering action ,sports and wildlife is my areas I work with clients. For me the durability is very much important and great focusing in low light and battery life play there part. Mirrorless cameras I haven't been impressed with the battery life. If I was a portrait, wedding photographers then Mirrorless cameras would suffice.
