I love both adaptations and I think they both bring different things to the table! Lol don’t think of it as a competition but rather what you’re in the mood for! Haha 2005 is def worth the watch! Patreon movie night? Lol

I love the BBC adaption, first watched in high school and fell in love with pride and prejudice. But the 2005 version is also beautiful and gives new perspectives on characters and scenes. They both have a space in the Austen universe and it is definitely worth watching. Once you love pride and prejudice you start to devour every retelling and adaption.

I also grew up on the BBC P&P and I love it, but I do think the 2005 one is definitely worth watching. The sets, cinematography, and score are all gorgeous and you have so many now iconic moments like the handflex, the rainy day rejection, the foggy morning proposal. I would give it a chance, you might be surprised ❤

Since you love Jane Austen and murder mysteries, I think that you might like the Mr. Darcy & Miss Tilney trilogy (at least I think it's a trilogy? 🤔 third book is coming out this June) by Claudia Gray that starts with The Murder of Mr. Wickham (especially after you read all of the Jane Austen novels). It's a murder mystery series that follows a son of Lizzie & Darcy and a daughter of the couple from Northanger Abbey while they solve mysteries of who killed some of the fans most loathed Austen's characters, while also falling in love with each other. You also get to revisit most of the couples and see how would they interact with other, which was absolutely delightful, for me at least ☺ There is also autism rep, as Darcy Jr is autistic and the books address how he struggles with that in his time period. I will say that I found the solution to the mystery in the first one to be somewhat weak (being a huge Poirot fan, I need a good solution 😆), but I found the second one to be satisfying and I cannot wait for the third one! 🥰

There’s a RU-vid channel I think you would really love for analysing Jane Austen more deeply: Dr Octavia Cox. She unpicks some of the things that would have been obvious at the time but we don’t pick up on. Yes, I remember watching the original 1996 pride and prejudice adaption on A&E when they were still making art and entertainment and not reality television and the deafening classics into the mix which was awesome. I was 19 and Mr. Darcy was bae especially Colin Firth as Mr. Darcy As for the 2005 adaptation with Karen Knightley, my favorite thing about that is Donald Sutherland as Mr. Bennett?,he is impeccable say what you will about the rest of the adaptation but I really really really love. Donald Sutherland as Mr. Bennett.

Don't read any other comments, I'm so with you on the 2005 P&P. I've tried to watch it three times and it's all vibes, zero P&P. I get why people love it, but sorry to the 2005 babes, they just don't GET IT. Glad you loved the book. My Austen book idea (that I don't successfully do but I still think is a good idea) is to read one Austen a year. Can be a new one (I still haven't tackled Mansfield Park) or a reread, whatever I'm in the mood for.

I don't love the 2005 adaptation, the BBC version will always be the best for me. I will say that the 2005 version is shot beautifully and the soundtrack is amazing (almost worth watching for those 2 things) but it turns a satirical novel into a gothic one, I just feel that it's way too serious and loses some of the lightness and laughter that Jane Austen does so well. I can't wait for you to reread Persuasion and get to S&S, P&P had been my favorite for SO long, but over the last few years Persuasion has just narrowly taken over the top spot, followed closely by S&S and P&P. I just love them all so much!

I don't know if you've read Persuasion, but I just read a modern retelling of it called Once Persuaded, Twice Shy by Melanie Edwards, and I really enjoyed it. Edit: I'm not done with the video, so I don't know yet, but if you don't like that retelling, there are about a million others out there. i love the 2005 because I feel like it’s what an adaptation is meant to be - something that uses the original source as a way to make something that, yes is mostly that thing, but also adds something to it. In my opinion adaptations that are just the source but in a film form don’t really do much for me which is why I love the 2005 one because yes there are book moments but joe wright is so good at creating atmosphere and captures the warm, sparkly feelings I had whilst reading P&P (whilst still obv covering the story)and adds to it with new interpretations and lines the same way new productions and directions of theatre add something to the original too.
