I would also look to Wisdom of Solomon 2.23-24 (here from the NABRE): For God formed us to be imperishable; the image of his own nature he made us. But by the envy of the devil, death entered the world, and they who are allied with him experience it.
We look at this as an example of a prophecy that has multiple fulfillments based on the different levels on which the text may be read-literal, moral, Christological, and Mariological.
The serpent was understood to be satan (Deceiver) from the beginning for the Hebrews, and not just a strange talking snake. The fate of the serpent is also understood will be the fate of Satan as well. Revelation 12 and 20 are some examples. Satan became a proper name to describe lucifer, light bringer, morning star.
