Is the Ferrari 348ts the most underrated Ferrari ever? Is it a better choice than a 355? TEG S5 E8

The Ferrari 348 has long been a bit of an underdog. In my opinion, that is undeservedly so. It is a BRILLIANT sports car, it moved Ferrari forward and is in many ways BETTER than a 355. Do you agree?
Watch my video review of the Ferrari 348ts and let me know what you think. I am well chuffed to have it and finally having a proper Ferrari in the garage is a boyhood dream realized. I have had other Ferrari but most have been to flip or temporary.

We have been lied to. I will never understand how people didn't appreciate these cars. As good as the 348 is the reason I absolutely adore the 355 is that it takes any possible shortcomings and delivers. Mainly the power not that it had to have it but near 400 sure is nice in that chassis. I do think the only thing the 348 has over 355 is the steering rack. That's the only possible knock I have on the beloved 355.

I own a 348GTB, I have driven 308GTS/GT4, 355, 360, 430. For me the 348 is the sweet spot, the 355 is actually much nicer to drive around town, more compliant....but when you press on at speed on a winding road, there really isn't that much in it, I prefer the 348 steering and feel at speed than the 355....Yes the 355 is a little more powerful, but really there is not that much in it.... I was looking to buy a 355 but I felt at the time the 348 was much better buying, the 355's felt over priced to me along with many annoying issues......yes the 348 is not perfect, but none of them are. Ferrari never made bad cars, 348 handling is on point, its a great drive........I feel some journalists who's driving skills were not up to the 348 performance capabilities gave it a bad wrap.......But whatever, I have one and love it!! Great video man, thanks for increasing the value of my 348, in fact I think I have to take it out for a blast right now after seeing this!!

@TimsEnthusiastGarage 14 дней назад
Of your list I have never driven the 308GT4, I have never known of a decent one to drive. It’s a shame because I love the way they look. The 355 valve / exhaust manifold / body corrosion issues (which seem more common than on 348) put me off. The 360 has THE BEST engine display compartment . It’s like a jewel on on display. Not super fast but I would take one of those over the much faster 430. If the scud was manual it would probably be one I longer for . I love the look of the 458, but man. They just get so rapid from there it’s in a different “gear” so to speak. I think of them much different . No longer a sports car to be savoured but more of a weapon. We are in the age of weapons grade cars and sadly most are owned by non enthusiasts without the honed skills. But that is a rant for another time. Thanks so much for watching

Yeah, it has 30 more hp than the 328, but it is at least 400 lbs heavier. Ferrari switched from a tubular chassis design to a monocoque chassis design in the 348, and the car ended up being much heavier. They haven’t made a production car below 2800 lbs since the 328. The 348 sounds superior though, especially with a Capristo exhaust. I even like it better than the 355, since the 348 both growls and screams at the same time. People who have driven the 355 and the 348 prefer the manual steering of the 348.

348 is expensive to maintain both in parts costs and effort to service. The Mondial (outside the T which is a 348 drivetrain) is far more under rated. Reliable, cheaper to service, and still provides the Ferrari experience. The 348 had build quality issues that get better as the run goes on. The late convertibles are very similar to a 355. The 348 gearbox loves to eat itself. Similar to how the TR diff likes to eat itself. I am sorry, but this review is youtube fluff. It doesn't cover what the real ownership experience of a 348 is. It doesn't care that the car is not the most reliable. It doesn't care that the value is tied to remaining low miles and also a service history with a reputable ferrari service center. It may sound better than an NSX and have better steering feel than one, but the nsx isn't going to require an engine out every 7 years. The NSX isn't going to grenade the gearbox under normal circumstances like a 348 might.
@TimsEnthusiastGarage
@TimsEnthusiastGarage 14 дней назад
I own a several dozen Bentley, Aston, Ferrari, Maserati etc. the mondial t is the best mondial BY FAR. I have spent many miles in an Mondial 8 and they are hilariously unreliable almost from a completely different era by way of quality. The last 95 Spiders are lovely and the late car in which I have spent the most time but quality wise very similar to my 91, power wise the bump is near imperceptible. The F355 with its extra revs and considerable power bump and tighter gear stack is a set ahead though much more expensive to maintain in my experience. I had a Testarossa with 50k miles on the original engine and gearbox. It never ate its gearbox. Your last paragraph, sounds like someone who is completely missing the point. While Ferrari can be a sound buy in terms of resale everyone , every single person is quite aware that a mechanical device will need serve. Having owned hundreds of cars and having covered hundreds of thousands of miles in “expensive to maintain” cars I would simply say if the cost of repair puts you off, cars in general aren’t for you. Having recently Serviced my Arnage, and posted about the cost of that service, I assure you I do care that people get to have a fair view of ownership. Fluff? Some people (myself included) will happily watch videos of cars I love just see them in action and hear other peoples take. Headed to your channel now to conduct a similar audit, quite sure I will find no fluff. Cheers and thanks for watching!

@sarahdell4042 14 дней назад
To be 100% fair. I’ve owned an NSX. If you’re not doing repairs yourself. Labor costs are very much on par with what it would cost to service this 348. Now, parts cost are much higher on the 348. But you’re comparing a flat plane crank Ferrari V8 to a nothing special Honda V6
@TimsEnthusiastGarage
@TimsEnthusiastGarage 14 дней назад
@@sarahdell4042 I agree. Additionally, a lot of people form opinions from reading forum posts and haven’t ever owned the cars on which they opine. Automobile ownership is very much pay to play. People buy “reliable” cars like the 996 or NSX because they think they can buy the car and ever have a big bill. It’s why 996/986 owners live in fear of IMS. Most would be financially ruined by this yet owners see it as a potential pit fall and service accordingly. The price of the car is never the end of the road. With cars where parts can be scarce (Bentley and Ferrari are amongst them ) you really need to have a talented mechanic or be a talented mechanic. An engine out service would cost me 1/4 of what people would generally pay and in general being thrifty, shopping ahead for know needs is a good policy. My last Bentley service was a tad under 900 dollars for what would have been 6500 dollars to someone who paid blindly to the dealer. At the end of the day all cars can break, even the NSX, and for me personally I would rather have a Legend Coupe or S2000 if Honda was a requirement. Also, and this is the last bit I will add. The two least reliable cars I have ever owned - 1. 1983 ur Quattro 2. 2012 Honda Odyssey Touring The latter scared me for life, but I would gladly own another ur quattro. For me it’s not about the money. It’s about the vehicle and how it makes you feel.
