Had two FetHead's arrive in the post today, made a huge difference recording with dynamic mics. Using a Tascam DR-40 the input volume without them was 80-90 and introducing the FetHead's brought it down to 10-15 cutting out the noise floor and preamp noise of the field recorder. Wish I knew about them months ago, would have been a big improvement in my earlier recordings.

I may be late to this party but it's the FetHead hands down. It's louder, clearer and warmer than your Cloudlifter example and that has been the case in many similar reviews I listened to. The FetHead is also less money and has a much smaller footprint. I know it is all a matter of opinion, but I spent my money on the FetHEad. I use the FetHead and I love it.

I have the fethead and the shure sm7b plugged into the focusrite 2i2, it has a lot of white noise, even though I adjust the gain back and forth:/ Do you know what I can do?

Hmm. I'm not an audio expert, but have you tried checking your xlr cable? The past I had a faulty xlr and it was the cause of my white noise.

@@annym5343 idk if im late but try to make sure your mic cable is not touching other electric devices, or close to your interface, that produce noises to the mic signal either, my noise level goes down a little when i did that, good luck

I'm thinking of getting an Sm7b microphone so i was looking at fethead on amazon and there're multiple of them that look the same but with different names and and i couldn't find the standard one or however u call it.. i could only find fethead phantom in line microphone pre amp.. can somone tell me if its the same or what does it do

Hey! If you check the description, I've linked all the products. Essential the Fethead (or all pre-amps) boost the sound of the SM7B because it's a really quiet mic.

hey kevin! i knew this video is old, well kinda but i still have a question i have a fethead + audio box usb96 i only did this cause i was on a budget atm, but should i get the cloudlifter and the scarlet solo? i see alot of people buying it but im not sure if i should do the same too (considering i have the money now) but what do you think?

I actually returned my CL. Imo it doesn't make a difference and I prefer the fethead because I can travel with it

To be honest, I'm not quite sure. If you have a home studio, the cloudlifter won't be a problem and I don't think you need the phantom. But for me, I really can't tell a huge difference between the Fethead and Cloudlifter. So if it was me, I would try out the Fethead and return it if you're unhappy with it.

Other words fethead is more portable, but has higher frequency response and cloudlifter has less frequency response but it’s bulkier and requires a second XLR cable

That's right. IMO I'd take the Fethead if I'm traveling. Cloudlifter is fine if you want to leave it in your home office.

There's also Fethead Germanium which is just 20 bucks more than regular Fethead and has even more gain and apparently cleaner signal. How does Cloudlifter compare vs Germanium?

No need! Goxlr has Midas preamps and has enough clean gain to power the sm7b! It’s an incredible imterface

I've had a fethead since 2009 I think, used with an ART preamp. In 2014 upgraded the preamp to a Golden Age Project pre-73 and man it was something else. Actually preferred my Shure mics without the fethead ever since, with the pre-73. Still using the fethead if I don't use my pre73. So get a good preamp guys, these things are only good as they're portable.

@@joerolon1468 Do not feed phantom power in your sm7b, you should block the button to avoid damaging your microphone. Look at these devices as buffer preamps that add another 20 db of gain but also add a flavor to the sound. If you have a nice preamp like the apogee, you may not like that but you may benefit the signal to noise ratio. Aren't you happy with your setup?

You have to engage 48v button on your interface/sound card...

There’s 2 versions of the Fethead there’s the regular Fetheand and the Fethead Phantom you want the regular Fethead

He’s actually using the wrong windscreen. 2 come with the SM7B. The thinner one which he’s using is meant for instrument recording. The thicker one is meant for vocals. It works almost as good as a pop filter imo. But most people make this mistake out of the box.

Jesus. You're a simple RU-vidr. All you have to remember is a few items, and you drone on and on about how the Fethead is better because you'll forget to pack a 2nd cable. Imagine if you were in a band. Or had a technical job. You'd have over 10 times the amount of things to remember. How do you make it through a day?
