Is the Ford Mustang V6 a BETTER performance car than a 2020 Mustang EcoBoost? 

So many people hate on the V6 yet with a good catback exhaust system you’ll sound better than any EcoBoost + with a procharger you’ll smoke stock 5.0’s and still have money leftover all while paying lower insurance and getting better gas mileage. Ford quickly realized that the V6 has too much potential to outshine the other two engines which is why they killed it. Change my mind.

I had a white 2012 V6 Mustang Premium Pony Package It was a great car and loved it. I got a ton of compliments from both men and women. The 2011-2012 Pony Package V6 was a beautiful car. A few guys at work talked a lot of crap about my car, but I later figured out that it was all based on jealousy. They weren't actually jealous of my V6 Mustang. Not too many people would be. They were jealous because I bought a new car which looked like a beautiful sports car and every time they saw it, they were reminded of the fact that they weren't driving their own dream car. If I had bought a new Camry or Accord, nobody would've said a damn word. But, I would take a V6 or EcoBoost Mustang as daily driver, rather than a Camry or Accord, any day of the week.

The Ecoboost makes power easily with bolt on and tune... but the v6 is a lot of car for the money, a great value

I traded in a 2017 ecoboost for a 2018 GT and the difference in the monthly cost is definitely noticeable with the insurance and the gas. That's the cost of having a V8 with that nice exhaust sound and powerful engine.

Got a 2017 V6, love it so much. It so much louder inside than the ecoboost. It’s been very reliable and fun! Test drove a ecoboost and did not like how I had to wait for the power delivery, V6 was instant on throttle response.

He’s clearly biased to the Ecoboost. I wouldn’t buy either but I’d definitely pick the V6 over a turbocharged 4 cylinder Mustang.

I like how you explained the linear power delivery! I own a 2012 V6 drove a 2019 ecoboost while V6 was getting repairs and something was off about the acceleration but couldn't figure out what it was. I prefer the linear power delivery of V6

Just bought the 17 v6. Absolutely love it. Also, there are options out there that can give you the power of the coyote for less money than the coyote. One can also drop an eco boost v6 from the Ford sho.

Love that you mentioned the SVO several times Joe, as a owner of one I feel like they deserve more recognition...a car ahead and too advanced for its time. Would love for you to find someone who owns a SVO locally to you and do a review on one 🙂

Hey you know that I'm here to hear your opinion. Mustang reviews are always appreciated. My first Mustang was a manual V6.

My 2015 V6 Mustang with the 051A package which gave you the fog lights, 18” five spoke wheels, color matched spoiler (or delete like I did), and power drivers seat. I also got the Auto Trans and it cost around $26k. I got mine for around $22k and ordered it from the factory. It was built on my birthday which is a great piece of provenance. The larger screen with Nav was NEVER an option on the V6 and neither was leather or the different trim on the dash. I’ve had the car 9 years and I put a Borla S-type cat back exhaust so she sounds amazing. Better than any Ecoboost. My car is a DIY P-51D Mustang Tribute car which has black Lemans stripes with white accent stripes which are an homage to the invasion stripes on Allies fighters during and after D-day June 6 1944. I use two USAAF roundels where 5.0 badges would be on the V8 and a custom tribute edition rear badge with a P-51d as well. She’s a beauty and still turns heads all these years later. 70k miles and I still smile every time I’m behind the wheel. So the V6 is just great to me!

Yes have a V6 but also allow it to have the premium trim with the leather and usable touch screen infotainment screen instead of the baby screen.

I had a 2015 ecoboost. It was a cool car and PP was well worth it . If you crave more power you can add a tune and some simple bolt ons and the engine will come alive. its a great platform . sound out the factory does leave a little more to be desired so I highly recommend an after market exhaust and down pipe if you want that

The Ecoboost looks awesome but man that colour on the V6 is gorgeous.

If I were to get a v6 mustang, the first thing I'd do after I bought one is replacing that freaking display. I would gladly pay almost 2 grand just to get more practicality from it.

I'm not a fan of the new Mustang front fascia so I'm going with the V6.

i own a 2013 mustang v6 with manual and performance pack (significant upgrades over non). after putting a Borla stinger exhaust, CAI, Tune, i fell in love with my car. when 2015s came out and 2020s eco boost i test drove both and decided to stick with my 13. i honestly prefer the look/style/feel of the 13s albeit i admit there are other features its worse off in. that said nice video and good honest feed back. well done sir

Have a 2019 eco boost and love it! Installed a Roush Cat-Back exhaust and it sounds pretty great for a 4 banger.

I don't know about y'all but I prefer the faster car with better gas mileage and cheaper insurance on the ecoboost. And I couldn't care less about the exhaust sound.

2.3 ecoboost is junk. I work for ford and these engines blow up with minor increases in power. 3.7 is a true 200K engine.

I’ll stick with my 2014 3.7, love the style of the S197. 2013-2014 best looking mustang in my opinion.

The 3.7L is a great engine for what you want in an entry level muscle/sports car, the reason ford went with the ecoboost is because they wanted to make the Mustang a global car and in a lot of counties they tax the displacement size of the engine. So to get around that Ford developed this turbo-4 to make them more competitive in the global market. Ford has 2 turbocharged V6's very similar in design to the 3.7L that they put in the F150 that both make a lot of power and I think would have been amazing in the Mustang platform but then that would have stepped on the toes of the 5.0. At the end of the day I would say if you want a car that your going to buy and keep for a few years and sell get the Ecoboost, you can put a few minor mods on it and be close to 400HP, which is really impressive for a 4 cylinder, do a down pipe, an intake and a tune have have some with it for a few years and put it back to stock and sell it before the motor blows. if your looking for a long term car, something that you want to get a lot of miles out of go for the 3.7L they've made that engine for a long time now and their fairly reliable, and hey if you want to mod it theirs still a great community and theirs a ton of stuff you can do to a 3.7L, a turbo or procharged on that V6 will have you spanking bolt on ecoboosts and slightly ahead of 5.0s, its not as easy to get more power out of then the 2.3L but I'd rather have the 3.7L long term.

Yeah, the V6 is the way to go. I don't think the Ecoboost is tuned properly or something -- they just sound too wheezy. It is possible to make a 4 cylinder sound like magic but Ford hasn't figured it out yet. Maybe they should study the Fiat 500 Abarth -- while that car is stupid looking and slow, it has a great exhaust note.

What's crazy is the eco boost is faster then the V6 with a smaller engine. But you add a turbo charger to the V6 and game over. lol

The V6 hands down over the 4-cylinder Turbo Ford should bring back the V6 in the Mustang

If I were to choose one of the Mustangs, it would be the Orange one. Although I prefer to have it as a V6 engine. I love hearing loud engine roars.

Fun fact the ecoboost needs premium to make that 10hp more than the 3.7 which makes its power on 87 octane. If you ran the ecoboost on 87 it would make less. If you ran premium on the 3.7 it would essentially be the same hp. Also gotta love that the ecoboost ran an identical 13.7 to the v6s that the v6 ran back in 2011.

V6 Mustang still F's in 2024. I just bought a 2014 3.7 Premium w/18k miles absolute mint condition. I've driven a 2017 Ecoboost I prefer the v6 esp if your looking for reliability and low maintenance. GT all the way I miss my 2017 S550 GT but its not ideal for a daily. V6 doesn't need premium.

Had an s550 V6 with 18” oem gloss painted rims and installed Borla SType exhaust it was acousticly loud. Was fun car, traded it for a GT while I have equity on it. Lesson learned, buy a V8 in the first place if your heart tell you to. Save up. If you cant afford a GT dont buy a Mustang alternative to begin with. Ford admits cyclone is a durable engine :). If you’re set for a V6 or i4 turbo and no ambition for a V8 then you are good too. Otherwise like most first time buyer who didnt buy a V8 will end up buying a V8 sooner or later.

I had a 15 EcoBoost once it came out. Great little engine and turbo is fun. Pros super comfortable and easy to daily. Very refined feeling. Cons I had major heat soak issues on any day past 80 85 and would make you really need to ring the car out for power in stop and go or highway traffic. Also the gas mileage from the 19 GT I have now and the eco are very similar unless you are on a perfect highway.

I’m not a huge fan of the EcoBoost Mustang. At least the V6 sounded great with a good exhaust

The two cars have different purposes. The turbo 4 is designed to act like a V-8 with maxed out low end torque. The V-6 is more of a euro engine that has torque higher up in the rev range and likes to rev more with a great sound. And most importantly, NO turbo lag Also, the V-6 has the least weight over the front tires for better turn in. The wheels are a little smaller which means better handling on less than perfect roads. The larger sidewalls also transmit less road shock into the unibody for less metal fatigue over time (a problem with ford's). Finally the V-6 is the only engine that does not require high test. Also, insurance is slightly less with the V-6. With the right tires, it handles well in real world driving. It likes curves but is more of a grand tourer than the turbo. The V-6 is more about a real world car for curves. The turbo is all about 0-60. Woo hoo, I'm a big macho car guy because my car goes fast zero to -60. The V-6 is for mature drivers.

I watch this review prior to buying a 2017 V6 convertible. I based my decisions on reliability. There are no data on reliability on the EC. The eco-boost in 2022 still had oil leaking issues by the coolant area. The EC is a relatively new 4 cylinder engine generating 310 hp and 350 lb of torque. I would consider buying an EC provided that it’s been proven reliable. I’m hearing negative things on the EC truck engines.

Sweet. But I don’t like the 4 cylinder. No soul. When I drove it I didn’t feel like I was in a Mustang. Sound! Sound! Sound!

I would rather get V6. Naturally aspirated engines gets up to the speed more smoothly, handles better with manual transmission. Does V6 Mustang run with 87 octane? Engine sound in the cabin also more pleasant from the video, too!

You can get the V6, put a Roush CAI in it and it's just as powerful as the Ecoboost and sounds much better. That's what I did and people love it. Camaro owners, Challenger, Charger, and other Mustang owners all like the car.

I think it would be fair to compare both in the base trim, since V6 did not have a "Premium" trim.

You get so much more power out of a tune on an Ecoboost than you do on a V6. Too bad Ford didn't do a twin turbo V6 for these cars...

the hp on the v6 is actually higher hp with 93 and even with 91 oct gas... they power rated the v6 engines with 87 oct the v6 gets a hp rating of 312-17 with 91-94 oct and 292 tq

I personally would take the V6 over the eco boost while I like the idea of a turbocharged Mustang and sure it’s more turntable but you can put a blower on the V6 not to mention no matter what exhaust Ford OR what aftermarket exhaust you put on it it’s going to sound like rice. The V6 makes power all the way to redline the four banger is more midrange and tends to run out of steam as you approach redline. Ford detuned the newer V6 Mustangs they make five less horsepower and you could get all the handling goodies just like the V8 had. Give me a 2011 V6 Mustang with the handling package and a manual gearbox.

I love all mustangs eco v6 v8 no matter what size of engine. To me they are the best muscle car plus it never been discontinued ever unlike some dodge cars and the camaro

The 2017 is a better looking car than the orange scooter on the left. Now you know why Ford is losing money on cars. RIP V6. Sad

I love my 2019 Ecoboost with the performance package.

I owned a 2015 V6 with Roush axle back exhaust. It was loud but not terribly fast. Now I have a 2020 Echoboost with JLT cold air intake and blow off valve, muffler delete. It rips loud and is faster. Both automatics. 6peed(v6) vs. 10speed echo, but the echo with that turbo sound is much more fun to drive 😊.

Not a fan of the remodeled front end on the eco-boost, it has odd angles that just seem to sharp for the rest of the car. Plus the 3.7L Cyclone is an amazing engine. The V6 should be remembered and maybe brought back.

Keep in mind youre likely test driving EB's pumped with 87 octane by the dealer. The EB wakes up A LOT with 93 (edit: and likely with very low miles in them)..Honestly, I feel like these EB engines get faster with more miles in them. Anyway, Its rated numbers are achieved only with the higher octane. The higher octane helps a lot in reducing that "lag", personally, I dont feel any lag in my '16 EB from a stop , there IS a very slight delay from a "roll" ... once its in boost, thing FLIES.

Hey Joe, LOVED the video and comparison between the 4 and 6er. I drive the 2018 Eco boost and its great , just like the 2012 v 6 I owned previously. As you stated , its totally up to the individual on which one to own. I will vouch for both , and yes the V 8 is still the BIG Dog compared to the 4 and 6 cylinder. The eco boost should have the base and the v6 should have the next step up. The eco boost sounds like crap exhaust wise.

I'm going with the V6 on this one Joe. That engine is tried and true. Invest in some bolt-ons with the money saved and you should be able to outperform a stock Ecoboost.

The v6 is by far a SUPERIOR engine! The ecoboost was a reaction from the federal mandates on emissions by the government of the usa! The duratech 3.7 is the better choice by leaps and bounds! Ecoboost engines will fail! All of them! The new bronco 2.7 ecoboost is already plagued with issues! Stay away from ecoboost! And the 4 cyl sounds like garbage! Cyclone v6,s sound amazing!

Ive always wondered why they restyle the headlights. IMO 15 to 17 headlights are much better looking than the newer design.

one last thing to note I work out of town a lot and I am able to rent the 5.0 and the EcoBoost mustangs and I noticed that when I drive both cars hard the V8 actually gets overall better gas mileage than the EcoBoost does surprisingly. This is based on driving both cars around 4 times each for two day stints at a time. Just an fyi

The first turbo 4-cyl Mustang was 1979. I owned a turbo Mercury Capri, but I shopped the Mustang as well.

That V6 pulls pretty good onto the highway.

I bought a new 2017 V6 Stang (base, lightning blue) for 20k all inclusive in mid-2018... Drove it for a few months + 6500 miles, cut the mufflers off & enjoyed the V6.. Best part - I sold it for the same amount.. Best deal I ever made!!!

We all know the cyclone engine was bulletproof. If they made it an ecoboost, it would’ve seriously damaged GT and ecoboost sales. The ecoboost was the only real option Ford had, because of CAFE regulations and the push to tap the international market. Full disclosure: I traded a 2014 V6 pony package for a 2018 base ecoboost with 101A and wheel & stripe package. Paid $28K OTD. With mild mods (custom 2.5” cat back exhaust, COBB stage 1+ kit - CAI and stage 1 OEM tune, strut tower brace, Steeda clutch spring, Ford performance hood struts, and white cue ball shifter). Love the gas mileage, overall liability as a daily driver, and handling.

I love my 2.0 turbo Camaro, but these new refreshed Mustangs are almost enough to make me reconsider lol.

I like the V6 sound better, but I love the Orange color more on the EcoBoost!! The EcoBoost doesn’t deserve all the hate it gets bc it’s not a slow engine. I think the reason it gets so much hate though is because the Mustang is a muscle car and a 2.3L turbo doesn’t scream muscle. Mainly bc it’s a smaller engine that isn’t too loud. It’s in no way a bad engine. It’s actually better than most of its competitors, it just doesn’t scream “muscle car” when you rev it hit the gas (make it high in the rpms/ make it loud) like the Mustangs of before. I really think muscle car purists just don’t like the smaller displacement and noise difference but the EcoBoost is faster, more powerful, and it gets better gas mileage, so I definitely understand why Ford made the change

the V6 sounded great with longer gears and "felt" faster on video. both are nice.

I had a 2014 automatic transmission V6 mustang. I drove it up to Sequoia National Park and back down. The road to Sequoia has many many steep switch backs. The V6 handled it easily but my brakes took a beating.

I dunno man. Isn't the Ecoboost much more tunable?

Joe this was a great review let me chime in on a few things. 1. The eco boost is faster. But in real world driving its more expensive to drive. V6 makes 305hp on 87 gas. The eco makes 310 with premium. That's an extra 30c a gallon every fill up. Something to really consider. Also the v6 can be made to sound really good. But not heard a good sounding eco yet. And the v6 can be made as fast as the stock eco pretty cheaply...

They might as well have kept the V6 , engine variety is what makes Ford a good brand. Dodge already has like 4 different engine options for the Challenger

I prefer more simple electronics. I like the small screen, makes it look more like the inside of a car without some huge tablet.

Back in the 60s and early 70s, the cost to upgrade to a v8 from v6 wasn't nearly as much as it is compared to today. The majority of v8's weren't even a GT. An actual GT in first gen mustangs were quite rare. But now the base v8 is offered as the GT. Ford has priced many consumers out from being able to afford a v8. I've got a 71 with a 351 cleveland, yes its a fun car to drive as weekend hobby car but a ecoboost 4 banger will smoke it. Cars today are just made so much better. It's too bad Ford couldn't keep the costs closer together. I've got no shame driving a 4 banger. It beats the hell out of the 5.0s I wanted in high school I could never afford. I'm too old to be racing around the lake anyways these days in a 400+hp v8.

If you want to have a nice exhaust note after installing an aftermarket exhaust then Go V6. If you like to tune tf out of your car and go go, then Go Ecoboost. A tunned Ecoboost with that 10speed is crazy. A 2015-2017 GT would get smoked by the lightest tune of the Eco

I just personally don't like the turbo charge on ecoboost, cause I feel like turbo charge breaks easily. My 2015 Q5's engine got wrecked cause of its stupid turbo constantly boosting more gas into the engine, i just don't trust the turbo anymore. It gives you more HP but the risk is there too.
