Is the GoPro Hero10 a waste of time (and money) for mountain biking? 

I definitely prefer the chest mount point of view , it is great to see the entire handlebar and all the shaking showing how hard trail is.

Appreciate the trail tour Brian. I’m personally a fan of the chin mount but the chest mount has its place as well. Use them both from time to time.

I was super hesitant to get the Hero 10... Then after many months of back and forth, I went for it, about a week ago. Not disappointed for what it's supposed be and do. In the right hands it can be an awesome addition to the gear.

The newest software update for the Hero10 has definitely helped. The firmware that I updated it to right after purchasing it was incredibly unstable and I lost so much footage.

Thanks for shedding light on this! I've been considering getting a 2nd GoPro and I was thinking about getting the 10 but man I've heard far too many negative reviews on it! Think I'll just get the 9 again, I haven't had any issues with it! Excellent work Brian 👍

Still on the Hero 9 (no gimbal) and having good luck with it. Personally I prefer the chest mount for the perspective with the bike as a reference, (IMO) the chin mount gives the footage that drone look flying through the trail. Keep ‘em coming!

the trail looked amazing. you have straight up skills! I'm still on the hero 8 black and not looking to upgrade until the 12 for sure.

Also the noise in the low light on the 9 you can filter a lot out with DaVinci resolve by splitting the chroma channel out of the video and softening it. Or just pay for DR and user the pro feature designed to remove digital noise.

You can use the hero 10 for dual camera setup. Just use it or mount facing backwards for behind shots or something other than placing it on the shelves.

Enjoying the video, keeps my spirits up while being sick with COVID. All the gopros seem to initially freezes up until about another couple updates later. This is why I don’t buy new models lol

I've had zero issues with my 10. I love it. Bought a 9 and then a 10 like 3 months later. 10 is better for me. I like the 4K 60fps option. I like the 10 for the colors too. I dont have to do any color correction. Also my videos are not blurry by the bars like in this video. I dont know what is causing that in yours. Hit me up for my settings if you don't getcit figured out. Love the videos! Patreon extended cuts are the best!

The chin mount is tough when you swing your head back and forth. The quick swing of terrain passing by is somewhat nauseating

I like this better by. far since there is no peripheral blur and I can see detail and depth perspective closer to the front tire. It appears to lessen the "GoPro" effect which flattens out hills since I can see the near detail.....but I understand chest mount shows steepness better. I also like how the chin mount gives a freer feel to it as if I'm actually riding although I can't imagine you wanting to alway ride with a full face. Your bike is quiet and I hear the tire on the dirt which I like a lot. Not sure if the audio helps that or not. You are riding this trail better than before. I remember you doing times runs with your brother helping and you are probably faster than that. Your ride reminds me a little of the energy I see from Phil Metz (Skills with Phil), Nice and poppy!!

I agree about the chin mount, really like the sense of speed, especially over the “chunk”. The steepness issue, I think you’re being too critical. Just watching on the iPad, I think I got a good sense of up and down. Keep up the good work!

Hey Brian, stick to the chest mount. The chin gives me a bit of motion sickness. Could be my 135" screen but definitely like the chest view more.

Looks like a good place to destroy a few peddles or derailers. Think I like your hero 9 better for the clarity. Things got a little grainy on me while I was watching. Still a great vid. Keep on killing it man🤘🏻

Personally I think you got the perfect chin cam position, BK! Most people would point their cameras too low to get their handlebars when using chin mount. I found that when I ride steep stuffs or concentrate hard...I tend to position my head a bit down and make camera point down too much. Keep up good video ;)

I've started to prefer chin cams recently, a lot of other riders I watch use it from time and to time and personally think it looks better, more sense of speed as you mentioned too. The steepness not showing is just an issue with all of them I think.

Hi, check out the gopro labs version. Awesome in low light with the max shutter angle in 45 setting.

I feel more immersed with the chin mount - I can see the trail better and it seems like the higher angle lets you see the steepness of the downhills more.

I have been using the Osmo Action for almost 2 years now. A lot of bang for buck. all i need is 4K@60FPS. never had an issue with the camera. love your vids always. thanks for the adventure!!

I appreciate that you use the gopro and not the 360 cam . I've stopped watching channels that use that garbage 360 cam. I'm sure it's easier to work for editing with but the footage just puts me off and I can't place the exact problem with it but I equate it with fisheye lens all the time.

The Hero10 is way less buggy than the Hero9. I've had my for months and no issues. I have been using the 9 for over a year too. And yes, chin-mount is the best for stability and look (other than steepness, lol). No action cam or any other camera is going to look good in low light recording dark woods.

The trees in that area are so cool. Very shire-like.

The chin mount either made you look faster or you just are faster haha. I’ve given those Amazon mounts a try and noticed when I get in a aggressive position when I need to get my chin over the stem, the bars disappear from frame. There is a guy on etsy that sells a GoPro mount that is proprietary for several full face helmets.

I can't believe the weather and trail conditions in Northern California in January. Looks like primo riding conditions....so freaking jealous as I sit here in PA with it currently being 10 degrees outside 🙃

Was initially bummed when i got my Hero9 right before the Hero10 was released but i'm not anymore. Glitching is the worst! That said, my POV is still a Hero8 ziptied to the chinbar 😂

What you experienced on the GoPro 10, I suffered the exact same on the GoPro 9! I got that camera stolen then I purchased the GoPro 10. So far, the GoPro 10 is working without faults for me.

I prefer the video quality and view point of a chest mount camera. I know that the new go pro comes with stabilization built into it but I wonder what it would look like with the gimbal connected to it as well?

The trail looked surprisingly close to what we see in northern England.

MediaMod - covers 'little' intakes under the feets of GP. Heat builds faster. For your use case I would - obviously - disable: GPS, WIFI, voice commands. Record in 4K and with 60 fps - do not use HyperSmooth in highest settings - just in medium. Record sound from different source, sync. sound, do not use media-mod. Just for the record - I hope you've had upgraded to the newer firmware and potentially try to use Enduro batteries (they handle cold better, but I suppose they overall have better endurance). EIS in low light is almost non-solvable issue, sadly. Needs bigger sensor, bigger optics - more light - and faster SoC - which brings us back to 'generating more heat' as faster SoC tends to do.

The chest mount was my preference, but the 10 has a very nice picture quality despite its drawbacks

You can set your shutter speed at least 2X-3X your frame rate in darker conditions and turn off stabilization then use ReelSteady if you want but it's another time consuming step.

Did you (re)format the SD card in the camera that you are using it in? No doing has caused issues. The chin mount definitely gives a lot more options for field of view when riding, such as checking out the scenery, seeing where you look when you ride, following others, etc. Much easier to point your head than your chest on the fly and on a moments notice.

Hey Brian i thought it looked pretty good it looked really rocky and fun couldnt tell the steepness just curious how does it compare to what you rode down under at falls crk , i,m an aussie and your trails always look way more gnarly than aust trails ?

I just got the Hero 8 Black and love it. Smaller body than the 9, cost me less, does the same job. I think I'm getting some pretty crisp footage now that I got the settings dialed. I don't bother with shooting in 4K and shoot in 2.7 (@60fps if I want to pull any slo-mo clips / 30fps if I want more "cinematic/faster" look), high bit rate, high ISO max, flat color (I adjiust that in editing) and like the results. I get it that it can be shittier footage in poor lighting, but honestly every model GoPro does that, even the 10. By shooting in 2.7K I have smaller file size and thus faster production / less storage space, ... still looks great. Plus, older computers on slower or shittier wifi can't watch 4K (or even 2.7k) smooth and well anyway! Shit, I'm watching this now in 1080p because I'm on lame wifi and an older video card in the computer. ;-)

How do we go from such good audio and video with the hero4 and gimbal to this? its intriguing to have an all in one setup but it seems ridiculous we need all this extra stuff to make it work well. What is the issue? are we just a small segment that doesn't matter to Gopro or what?

I use Go Pro Hero 7 with PeauPro87 3.37mm lens. It is a no distortion lens so it captures the steepness and siz eof obstacles. So I will stick with that until I know I can upgrade to a newer and stable, not super buggy camera, and install this lens or a lens that does the same. I bought the hero7 with the PeauPro87 3.37mm already installed. It was worth it. With stock lens and even in linear mode there is still distortion.

I like my Hero10, i run silicone case with deadcats to reduce windnoise. I love your Rode setup, one day I may get one. No real glitches, but I don't run media mod. It does overheat alot, so i typically run it without internal battery in, but a usb pack on a chesty. I also run the labs firmware.

I definitely prefer your chesty view over the chin. Maybe if it had the Max Lens Mod on it it would be ok but not enough foreground in view.

Watching this I had a bit of an epiphany thinking of Seth's old video on this subject. Apple should make an action cam. Slap their phone camera and image processing into a cube with a 3" screen and totally blow gopro out of the water. A used few year old iPhone on a chest mount already makes for a better video and audio experience than pretty much every non-gimbal gopro setup already.

Here’s a trick that took me forever to discover, put your memory card in a computer. Format it (long) not the quick. You have to un click the quick format. This will take hours to perform. Then put the card in the camera. Format it there. most likely u will not have any more issues freezing

What about the actioncams from DJI? They are the competitors. And quite worthy may i add

Brian what tires do u run on your front and back tires of your bike ?

From experience, these devices are put into market before they get fully sussed out. Meaning... firmware updates should vastly improve performance. If you got an early GP10, that may be the difference. I am a professional cameraman and I deal with this on the pro gear as well. It's unfortunately a side effect of having the latest and greatest available right away.

in my experience i run the hero 10 with the wind screen cover and my footage turns out great for me

Gopro seems to be bad at bug fixes and stability I have a 4 session which was on v2 firmware I think it was. It never got an update after that then it cot discontinued and the weird blind menu navigation never got fixed I could basically mess up and change settings completely blindly like playing Russian roulette of settings. Maybe it was a faulty unit buy no issues apart from the various bugs. I see several of other cameras were buggy, and now 10 is buggy. Also people have issues with overheating if the tuse 5k unless they are blasting downhill or out it on a MC helmet or on a car, seems like the camera can't handle 5k on slow pace or non moving shooting, but the issue you describe might be a faulty sd card or too slow sd carf, the. It can't write fast enough and it has hickuos. But might be bugs too, but I don't remember everything I saw and heard but if it's problematic in 4k too, then something is wrong with the hardware or firmware or sd card. But you can't continue on a unreliable system. But I've not had any issues with Hero7 Black yet, very stable no bugs so far. But I fyou fill up the sd card it might not want to turn on, but if you try it eventually will, maybe I am doing something wrong. I ha disse swith connecting to it via phone before but that was cus of the horrible Sony xz premium it had horrible signal, I have a Samsung a52s now.

Are you using wide or superview, for the camera angle? There is something about the lens distortion that I don’t like as much. Also try a different higher speed sd card and see if that helps with the camera issues.

I'm still using the HERO 7 because all the issues I heard about on all the newer models. Can't bring myself to drop the $$ on something that will still on the shelf. Never had a issue with the 7 so, if it ain't broke...

The chin mount is the one for me although I have always enjoyed your chest mount footage. I run this exact setup, TLD Stage and Hero 10. My Gopro has been fine so far. I've had no issues recording or glitching. Did you have it set in 'superview' by the way? Looked kind of like you didn't or you had stabilisation set to high as it looked quite cropped in.

I've had zero issues with my gopro 10.. i did run the updates on it and maybe that's why.. I've found it to be very stable and reliable shooting 4k/30 with a helmet/visor mount.. no issues whatsoever. Also running the media mount with the back microphone as priority when talking and riding...

Actually I think that the GoPro hero 10 is pretty darn good looking on the film part maybe you just need to update the firmware and it should be even better because the color is actually really good stabilization is real real good wide angle lens I see every details and how steep things are really well too I think it's an overall it's checks all the boxes except for the firmware those are usually pretty quite buggy anyways when you get started

Personally not a fan of the in body stabilization, I mean it is good but all I notice is it holding on letting go, holding on letting go which you don't get with a gimbal.
