We’re very often acting like comparing Thoth and RWS is like comparing apples to oranges, yet both decks are very much products of the same school; the golden dawn. They’re not THAT different, just the way both authors/illustrators chose to have the cards pictured (especially the minors) make them feel different. But inherently, they’re all still based on the same base ideas. (Bar ‘the Aeon’, that card is way out there).

That is true, although there are some distinct differences between the two decks. Similar to how the Golden Dawn decks are different than a Marseilles deck, but they are all Tarot.

It was SO COOL to see this deck with the RWS and Thoth on either side - love love love!!! This confirmed, for me, that I made the right choice not to scoop up the Hardy bu tI'm so glad you're enjoying it! Love that fusion!

Cool review, thank you! Interestingly, I prefer when Thoth princes are equated with RWS kings, and Thoth knights equated with RWS knights, based on some Book T language about "figures mounted on steeds" and whatnot - as for Mathers' ultra confusing labels, I understand why the world has never come to an agreement on such things 😂 Anyway, I hope you find more "hybrid" decks to juxtapose, very neat idea!

Thank you for sharing Dawn. I am really liking the Hardy Tarot, it has that special combination of symbolism and therefore knowledge, I presume is within the golden dawn deck - I am yet to look down that rabbit hole too 😆 (freezing my card now). Random thought. Have you done this with the star tarot yet? If you feel tempted I would be glad to see that one 🌞

I haven't but I love the Star Tarot and I know it has Thoth influences. That might be a fun one to do! 🙂

Yes the Princes are the Kings in the deck description the creator mentions "the court cards (page, prince, queen, and knight.) This differs slightly from traditional decks in that kings have been replaced with princes and the order (or hierarchy) is slightly different. This was done intentionally because I wanted to create a system that felt less patriarchal with a feeling of balance and gender equality. The princes in this deck share the traits of their equivalent (king) in other decks, but they have a more gentle energy. It was for the same reason that I chose to represent my pages as female figures." They also mention that the deck is meant to be read intuitively but says it was done fairly close to traditional RWS to help folks out. Though like you mention I feel lots of Thoth vibes in some cards despite the creator never mentioning Thoth. Loved this video. Got this decks forever ago and we never clicked but the deck also never wanted to be given away and think we are nearing a time of working together. I do love the art. Always appreciate you thoughts.

The thoth deck Empress reminds me of Saraswati or Tripura Sundari.

The Hardy deck has some lovely cards. I have never heard of that before. I have to agree about the prince's faces - I was just thinking eww as you mentioned it 🤣
