► 4:40 - Time jump to where I start talking specifically about if the Harley Iron 883 is a good starter bike.
________
I get this question all the time: Is the Iron 883 a good starter bike? The answer to that? It's not a simple yes or no answer, but rather comes down to what you are comfortable with. Think of it like a glove. I wear extra large gloves, but they're not going to fit someone well that wears medium gloves. Unfortunately it's not as easy as 'one size fits all,' so you have to do some research to find what you're comfortable with. After learning to ride safely of course (MSF course!)
Hopefully this video is able to give a little exposure on if the Iron 883 will be a good starter bike for you, or help to guide you in finding your first motorcycle.
Please feel free to comment with any questions you might have below, and I'll try to answer them to the best of my knowledge.
As always, thanks for watching and your continued support! We just hit over 1,000 subs, can't thank you all enough. Ride safe out there!

Right when I was first looking for a motorcycle people kept saying "you're a big guy you need a big bike anything under a 1000ccs won't be able to carry you" (I'm 6'4" and 200+lbs) and I test rode my neighbor's 2009 Suzuki Boulevard and that bike has an 883 and it launched my ass off the line from the start. Naturally I was surprised because I thought I needed a huge bike and did not expect the Suzuki equivalent to a sportster to launch my big ass that quickly without any trouble at all. So now I'm looking at getting an Iron 883 as my first Harley

I bought a 2011 Yamaha Stryker as my first bike. 1300cc, 650lbs, and long wheelbase. Never ridden a motorcycle before. After an hour of riding and about 5 miles put on it on back roads, I'm able to take turns without losing my balance and can do low speed turns well. It's all about who you are and how quick of a learner you are. Just buy what is most comfortable to you.

The Iron 883 has been greatly improved in the 2016-2017 modes both in looks and performance. I ride a 2017 Iron 883 and I always get compliments and it definitely gets a lot of attention mostly from men ( for those that say that "it's a girl's bike"). For someone that has some experience with smaller bikes its the perfect bike to get started on the bigger ones. It has a lot of torque which some sport-bikes lack.

Had a GPZ 900R as a first bike - worked just fine since I was terrified of the amount of horsepower. Eventually I grew into it and suddenly 115hp was not enough. A tip - TRY different bikes before you buy one. And most importantly - drive with your HEAD - not your hand.

I started on a 250, rode for a year, got a 500 had that for 5 and now with an 883 Superlow. People always ask and I have firmly held start small but people will get what they want, so, I have had to change what I suggest. 1: Used. Drops will cost less $. 2: Insurance, even if you don't need like here in FL. 3: Gear. I've been riding 7 years now and I still make mistakes, yes, they're not as drastic but I cringe to think what would happen with a new rider. I agree with most points except the 883 suggestion. These bikes are quick, can be heavy and are $$$ . I think it's enough solo and have gone a 5 day trip with it, so I would still caution(not deter) new riders. To clarify I see it this way: a light and small CC bike will allow for tremendous growth in terms of skillset and faster. Are there worse bikes? Certainly though I would certainly caution an 883 buyer. Regarding your point about figuring out what you like, I'll be looking at a Springfield or maybe a Road King in a couple of years for two up touring; I always thought I would end up with a GSXR or Street Triple. I hate chains and my knee doesn't bend as well due to an accident in my 2nd year of riding. Also, should have written no swearing on a popsicle stick :) (FREE!) Okay after, pausing at 14 minutes to comment and then watching it to the end negated my cautionary suggestion. Blackhead.

@ericdeco3661 7 лет назад
On the other hand I would also say don't let people tell you what you need. When buying my first motorcycle I wanted a larger sized sport bike but everyone was saying it's my first bike so I should just go with a 250. I got a ninja 250 and after 3 months I traded it in and got a gsxr 600 which is what I originally wanted. Now, I'm the proud owner of a nightster and I'm loving it but I wish I had just listened to my gut because I knew I could handle the bigger engine. (Also had experience on dirt bikes before getting a street bike so other people may not be as comfortable as I was.)

You are right, I think the 883 is a good starter bike, but after going to the local HD dealership here in Manila and sitting on an iron, a 48 and a softail slim, now I prefer the "lower-sitting" bikes like the forty eight or the softail slim... being that i'm 5'5 and 270 lbs, who wears baggy pants and loose-cut slacks on a daily basis (since they are the only kind of pants that can fit me in my country lol)

I served as US Border Patrol Academy firearms instructor for 9 years and then, after retirement, served another 6 years again at the USBP Academy as line officer in firearms training. The best handgun one can carry / use is one that they can shoot well both with sighted shooting and point shooting. Recoil can be a determining factor in this decision, especially when shooting using sights. For close range defensive shooting where sights will most probably not be used then the choice becomes more of recoil recovery and tolerance of recoil. Ballistically with the newly developed defensive handgun ammunition, such as Underwood’s Extreme Defender, one need not be concerned so much with the caliber has been the case in the past. The 9mm which exhibits mild recoil has been proven very effective with this design projectile. (And no, I am not associated with Underwood. ;)

My daughter (6-0) has the Roadster 1200, which is quite top-heavy and has fallen on me. In the exact same situation, I was able to stabilize myself upright on the 883 (I'm 5-8). Is the 883 a good starter bike? Sure it is. Why? its a small bike that delivers very minimal power. You can literally go full throttle on the 883 and not break the any speeding laws. Thats what beginners need. Also It doesn't handle the worth a damn but when your starting out you need to learn the basics and not worry about corning in the twisties. For those who may disagree with that all I can say is keep on riding and try other bikes and you will realize what handling is and no i'm not talking about super sports or any of that. Other naked street fighters or cruisers will do just fine but I will admit your not buying a 883 for its handling, speed or cornering ability. That bike is more style than anything else. A plus to that bike is that you can mod the hell out of it so if you don't want to move up to a bigger bike you can make it a 1200 or 1250 so thats cool. I own a HD night rod special and my friend owns an 883, 48 and a Road glide. I took his 883 out while he rode my night rod and simply put I couldn't take it. Not because it is just a slow bike but I felt so unbalanced from that stiff azz suspension to lack of confidence I had simply going through the corners, I'd hit a bump and I felt my brain swishing around in my head. Now to be fair this was a 2013 883 so I don't know if they improved the suspension or not. However If i owned the 883, those shocks would be the first thing to be replaced. With that being said, all bikes have seats and there is an azz for that seat so if you sit on a bike and you love it then it really doesn't matter what anyone else has to say. Just ride safe

In general, when is it a good bike? If, you don't do long trips like every week. And then again, you can do long trips with it. If you love cruising. And i do recommend cruiser controls. And no, its not only for starters. It runs great. In the city, highways. Cobbleston roads are a pain in the ass. Like really!! But!! Once you have one and sell it. You are going to miss it. A little downfall, parts in Europe are so expensive. Keep that in mind.

I hear a lot of people who say that it is a bike for beginner, but experienced riders (those who ride dirt bikes at first). I took the MSF course last year, passed it but I had trouble with the figure-8 turns; other than that I did pretty good and started feeling comfortable. Although I can't afford a bike right now, when I do I'll likely take the course again as a refresher. I asked the instructor about getting an 883 as a first bike and he suggested starting with a smaller/cheaper used bike. The problem is if I buy a bike, it will likely be from a dealer and I"ll finance so buying a used small bike for cash isn't really possible. I'm only about 5'6" 175lbs and keep wondering if I should get this 883 iron as a very first bike.

I've had the same problem with the habit of cussing because I'm a pool-and-poker-player so I'm always around it and they're just other words. It just becomes a subconscious habit and the way to stop it is to be conscious of it while you're around the people who do it all the time. If you continually stop doing it when it is appropriate and you're around people where it's accepted and just another word - you won't do it when it's inappropriate. There are times when you need the shock value of cussing.... like when you're being treated badly and you're really pissed off at something.... (It will get your point across real-fast but ONLY if you rarely do it).

im kinda torn between getting a new/bigger bike to, but I like that I can upgrade to 1200 or 1250 and keep 883 insurance rates :) If I do upgrade though, it will be a Street bob or a Fat bob. I think the Street bob looks like the Irons big brother :)

I believe you are on point with the "good starter bike" . research your options. for sure take a riding course, and the bike shouldn't be intimidating to the rider. and I'm with you on the "48" I love the looks of that bike.

You can buy 1200 conversion kits for the 883. It's about $1,000 and comes with a piston and cylinder sleeve. The 1200 is really just a big bore 883, and due to Harley's 3-piece engine design, making an 883 a 1200 is simple. Just buy the parts and bolt them on.

I carry a .380 auto... the ballistics on Hornady is impressive, I sure don't want to get shot center mass with it. Great video. I have a KLR 650 for my first bike. Might be a bit tall, but I'm getting used to it.

New to the channel, love the content. I’m 42 5’10” 165lbs and I have never been on a motorcycle. Most of family has been on bikes but I just didn’t invest the time to want one or learn to ride. With that being said, the “bike bug” has bit me and I have been doing my research and I will also be taking a class at my local college. I know that I want a Harley and I really like the 883 bit the bike that I keep looking at is the breakout. Wanted your thoughts on whether the breakout would be easy to learn? Or should I stick with the 883? New subscriber!

I'm a big fan of the 9mm as well. Cheap to shoot and not too big, not too small. Have my on the Glock 19. I really loved my 1911! I had the Kimber Eclipse stainless steel. It was the handgun of the year back in 2002 I think when I bought it. Damn it was nice to shoot. Expensive to shoot though. I know the "take down power" argument. Well if that's what a man wants I would go with the .357 Magnum any day! Great bike by the way! Greetings from San Diego CA!

Yup, I agree. I'm 5'4" , 165 lbs. I'm looking into getting a bike, I sat on the street 500, it was comfortable. I sat on a couple iron 883, like them because I can flat foot on them. Also the Heritage soft tail, very nice, heavier bike, more money of course. But first I need to take the rider's course then I'll see. But I'm gonna need to get a 2up some my wife can ride also because she's the one that told me I can get a motorcycle if , get this , if i keep my beard....yup i need to keep my beard so i can get a Harley. Married almost 23 yrs. I can handle that. But anyways, great advice in the video, the bike is cool, and i enjoy watching you videos Blockhead. Thanks for what you do, later.

Bore that sucker out, especially if you can do it yourself. Much cheaper than buying a new bike, and especially if you enjoy the look of the Iron, you won't regret it. The power boost with new pipes and a conversion kit with the 883 cams is insane and makes the bike feel on par, if not beyond some of the stock 103's. Even if you have it done by Harley, it's still a helluva lot cheaper than buying a new bike, trade in or not.

I absolutely LOVE the way the Iron 883 looks, but it's just too small, engine-wise. The blacked-out look is incredible. But my Yamaha V-star 1100 is almost too small, power/speed-wise. Harley needs to up the power level and they would have one bad-ass bike.
@swampssa
@swampssa 7 лет назад
You can bump up the power on the iron pretty easily. The main target audience of the Iron isn't the really the long haul bikers bike. That's why they make bikes for that. But for putting around town its perfect as is. With some extra power like bumping up to the 1250cc ranger it starts to be a bike that you need. I've been riding all kinds of bikes my whole life from big hog harley to Ducati Streetfighters, and yet i still with the Iron now. It's just right.

But is it a reliable bike? I mean, does it have stuff to fix all the time for instance? I’m in for my very first motorbike and also a keeper. I’m more interested in reliability and classic style than performance so I’ve come to 4 models: HD Sportster 883, Triumph Speed Twin or Bonneville, Moto Guzzi V7 and Royal Enfield Continental GT which I can buy brand new, not the 3 others. Also considering Yamaha XSR, Kawasaki W series
