Nothing beats the Helix. Being a former tube amp snob I never thought I would like it. But it’s won me over and its sonic potentials are only limited by the users ears and imagination.

Still #1 for sure and keeps getting better. The others are good too but Helix is the best. So easy to use, sounds so good. For live use it is easily the best as well. Having Native on top of that makes it the obvious choice for studio as well. Love it!

I’m keep coming back to the Helix, not only for all the qualities mentioned, but also for its versatility and flexibility. I run both guitars, synths and vocals through the Helix at the same time. Whilst it also functions as a midi foot controller for my Ableton live set. All in one box.

I’m keen to do this, I have a hi gain amp. Is it possible to use the effects loop and get clean tones from the helix?
@PuRe_AdDicT
@PuRe_AdDicT 8 месяцев назад
It depends how much of the gain is coming from the power amp stage When you place a Helix clean amp in your fx loop, you must also bypass your real amp preamp stage or you’ll get real preamp into helix preamp.
@paulngardner
@paulngardner 8 месяцев назад
@@PuRe_AdDicT thank you. Can you run helix straight in to the FX loop without anything going into the main input or is it possible to bypass the main amp input in the helix?
@PuRe_AdDicT
@PuRe_AdDicT 8 месяцев назад
It’s possible to bypass if you’re connected with 4cm and your guitar is first input into helix It’s a matter of bypassing the send return block and then your guitar signal is going out of helix into fx loop return You must be connected with 4cm to do this So you ll be bypassing send return block and activating clean preamp model at the same time Clean preamp model must be after the send return block in helix chain

Is the tone you're using at 12mins in available in any of your preset packages? It's beautiful, I love the subtle crystal effects that comes in when you use the exp pedal. Allows for selective crystals instead of it becoming a wash of everything shoved together. edit: nvm, just reached the end of the video. Had to do a little searching in the folder, I see it's in "Greatest Shits" which I thought was a folder of presets you didn't like lmao.

Fractal fm9 for me. I think fractal/helix compete very well and depends on your usecase. I have an hx stomp and nothing will beat it in terms of having all of the great helix sounds in a tiny pedal that can also do so much more. Watching to see if line 6 brings flux and other ideas from the hx one and fractal to their next gen product, expecting big things!

Great video John! I was wondering what preset(s) you were using in this video? But I agree that there.s nothing else out there matching the Helix for effects. I love mine as well as my HX FX I got a couple years ago. Regarding the Helix, personally, at this time, I'm still using my HX FX with my tube amp and "analog" rig which is still my main rig. I've been using my more recently acquired Helix floor mostly at home for now. But I'm thinking of switching to the Helix only for live use OR replacing the HX FX with the Helix in my analog rig which would enable me to cut 3 analog drives off my pedalboard. The Helix would also serve as my backup in case of an amp failure. I would need to augment it with a smaller pedalboard which would contain the Boss SY-1 synth pedal which has no equivalent in the HX/Helix as well as my Wampler Ego compressor which I still prefer to any of the compressors in the HX/Helix. That smaller board would also contain two EV-5 pedals. One connected to the Helix and the other to the Boss SY-1. I need to do type swell effects with the SY-1 like Andy Summers (The Police) or Steve Rothery (Marillion) did back in the 80s with the Roland GR-300 guitar synth. The flexibility of the Helix with its superior connectivity is really unmatched. Thank you!

I use the helix as multi fx in 4cm with a tube amp and a real cab. I've bought it as multi fx, than needs changed and used it for as a modeller for several years but when the chance to go back to tube amps I went back to it. Used as an FX unit and rig brain makes the Helix really powerful and with tons of dsp available for basically any need.

Glad you played the Gladiator Movie Theme (Now we are Free) 13:45 , and Yes Helix is the best product out there, I just wish all companies stop using these metal switches, cause if you live in Humid and Costal weather conditions, these switches tend to rust, moving forward I hope companies use less metal and more plastic or any other material so that these units last a long time.

That's the climate I live in, and rust concerns me as well. Electronics don't survive here well. My HX Stomp gets rather hot when in use, and I used to think that was a defect. But, with the humidity here, it may actually be a good "feature," as it may be preventing moisture from building up on the electronics. 🤷

As a basic Rock n Roller I just wanted good effects and Amps in one small unit that acts like a pedal board. I use snapshots For Amp Parameters (just like switching amp channels). Being an early digital user, than switch to tubes only, then to a tube and digital person, they all are great and I'm glad some of these geniuses went and stayed in the lab to give the world different options. I might play my kemper on Monday through a rack mounted tube power section, Axe fx on Tuesday through a digital power section or spark up the jp2c head. I might like it Monday, not on Tuesday and love it on Friday. Its so awesome to have all theses options. Don't let videos and people diatribe you, tone and how you get it are up to the user and I hope its all fun for you and us. Love your vids, tone , and playing!

I swapped out my HX stomp for a QC a few years back and I somewhat have buyers remorse. The QC is a lot more versatile for a multi instrumentalist but line6 has nailed their effects and workflow.. In hindsight, my ideal guitar setup would be an HX effects with a UA Ruby either in the loop or at the end of the chain.

Most underrated modeler and effects? Boss. The GX100 has far exceeded my expectations. I would put up their amp models against anything out there. And the effects? They are Boss effects. For a very reasonable price. I grabbed 2 of them. One for backup. I also use an Eventide H90 for some over the top stuff.

05:14 The Helix HX is the FX-only version of the Helix, and I tend to see it used on boards with a handful of 'special' FX pedals that they've struggled to recreate with the Helix. It's a great solution for people who love their amp.
@jivetolkein

This is what I'm doing, but there is one disadvantage I wasn't aware of, and probably doesn't bother many people other than me - HX FX doesn't support toe on/off wah. I love the Line 6 dual purpose pedal, volume until you click the toe on then wah, but I can't replicate it :-( .. I've modded a Helicon expression pedal and created a dead zone which kind of works but its the one thing that might make me sell up for a Helix LT and live with the onboard drives (which are perfectly fine really)

I've never used a full blown Helix (so I don't know if they behave the exactly same), but I do own an HX stomp and an HX Effects. And conserning those two, the only features that they are really missing, in my opinion, are: - a global input gain, like -20dB to +20dB; - and the option to globally turn off cabs and IRs. Those features are present in most of the similar devices nowadays (GT1000, GX100, Ampero Stomp, even the cheapest ones, like the valeton gp100), and are very useful, since they reduce a lot of thinking ahead. No need for multiple presets for diferent guitars. No need for doubling presets if you vary between playing DI or thru an amp. These features are the ones that keeps me wanting to change to another device.

Line 6 has innovated so much that it's insane. I don't think you can name any other big players in the digital effects or modeling realm that haven't borrowed from them in some way. They truly set the stage and the bar for this stuff. I'm also blown away that they, more than any other company associated with modeling, strive to constantly create new original effects and amp models. To me, that is still the most underappreciated aspect of the Helix.

I've been using a pod go for the past year or so, and after I got my 4 patches and scenes all the way i like I have lost all wanting for different amp/modeller gear. My Marshall stack gets ignored as I've just gotten exactly what I need from the helix sounds in the pod. It does take a bit of eq and compression pedal work with a 3rd party IR to get the amp tones to the highest level, but now I haven't heard any other gear sound better... And the size of the Pod go is perfect to go in my gig bag

Im a gigging musician in a power trio band, playing classic rock. Helix meets my needs but i do add a few other pedals… Ditto x2 looper because it is unique in having a sep footswitch for functions that a one switch looper screws me up when playing live. Also i use Boss SY200 and EHX keyboard pedals. Helix has some ok synths, but adding keyboard effects would take it to the next level, although “Poly Hammond” gets me in the ballpark for gigging

While I get the preference for smaller, I'm curious if the smaller units are really as useable/friendly. Helix may feel big, but that space makes it very useable and more 'accidental stomp' free in my experience. I also think its built-in pedal is very nice for volume/delay swells etc. There's also the LT for people who want something smaller.

I'm using a POD GO as my main church board, and I currently run two ambient pedals together through the effects loop of the modeler. The sounds I'm achieving are mind blowing. We are currently recording an entire album of original material and I've used this setup for everything bc the tones are that good. I've always been an amp and pedal guy, and a tonal purist, but it would be hard for me to ever go back at this point. If you added scribble strips, a slightly larger touch screen, and encoder knob footswitches that still had the touch capacitive switching to a pod go with the full dsp of the helix I think it would be nearly a perfect format the only things left it would be missing at that point are the capture/profiling capabilities of the tone x headrush prime/ core kemper and quad cortex and Then If you took the power of the new fender tonemaster pro into it but with helix routing and management it would be the ultimate

I'm using a computer with software plugins; sounds great, works great, flexible,... among my guitar plugins I have Helix Native, but it's more cumbersome compared to Neural DSP and other guitar plugins that distance themselves from the world of pedals and amps. While none fully embrace the possibilities of digital signal processing without the "real world simulation" of a guitar rig that most guitarists prefer as a common frame of reference, perhaps some plugin soon will. Blue Cat Audio Destructor, also part of their Axiom plugin, is a good example of digital tone shaping...but they had to make it accessible by providing a "real world simulation" of guitar rigs likely to increase sales (IMO). Destructor's Tone Map is also interesting and useful. IMO

It’s access to all of his presets, along with a supporting IR or 2. It’s access to a link in a cloud storage account. It’s good stuff! I think I spent $5? They’re dialed in better than I can! My only complaint is that they’re all very hot output signals. It makes it difficult to send the right volume to front of house sometimes. I reduced the output volume so I can crank the volume knob to 10 (unity). More consistent live results that way.

I’ve recently gone back to using the Helix as an effects only rig. Mainly I got tired of dealing with my pedalboards for gigs, and I realized that my grandiose ideas of programming MIDI for external pedals were never really going to happen because I just don’t have the time. To me, that’s really the thing that sets the Helix apart - snapshots and controllers allow you to quickly do things that would be very time consuming or impossible with other gear. I don’t have a problem with the Helix amp modeling at all, it’s just that I’ve never really been able to fully use amp modeling with the bands I play with. Having an amp is just the path of least resistance. We struggle enough as it is with our monitor mixes, and having to worry about monitoring my guitar is just a complication I don’t want to deal with most of the time. I actually have tried using the Quad Cortex for effects only, and it sounded OK. There were no issues, per se, it’s just that the variety and depth of the effects is extremely limited compared to what you have with the Helix. After creating a few presets, it feels like you run out of options. The Helix just presents a much deeper pallet. I really do feel like Line 6 is at the sweet spot as far as giving you parameters to edit and ways to control them. Doing it with a Fractal device just seems overwhelming and tedious.

I Have a Helix LT. Tried the Tonemaster and Quad Cortex. For me the Helix is still my favorite "modeler" type of unit. It's true that the form factor needs a bit of work but for me, if Line6 is going to upgrade the Helix, I would simply add more DSP cores and maybe upgrade the visual when editing an amp or effect with rotary switches like the Tonemaster. It is really fun to use. As for "profiles" or "captures", adding a NAM or ToneEx block (play only) would be a nice feature.

I have a Helix Floor and a Fractal FM9, and if had to give an “overall best” to one of them, it’d be the Helix. I think the Fractal has a slight edge in amp realism (on some of the models, anyway), but with everything else the Helix offers from stellar UI to tons of models of real-world pedals and rack gear, the Helix wins. It’s just a very well designed and thought out piece of gear, with very few rough edges to be found.

my 2c regarding capturing features. 99% of guitarists don't have amazing sounding amps to capture. What is the point? It's only relevant as a feature that you can show off in RU-vid videos, or as a professional touring musician matching your tone from the studio. Tonex had the right idea IMO by separating out the capturing and the playing features into entirely seperate products.

I'm the ridiculous guy that has the Helix floor as a midi controller, amp channel switcher, volume pedal, compressor, and various modulation effects, alongside another pedalboard (initial gain stage, reverbs, delays, looper, and WL50), and 4 cable method to a multi-channel tube amp. I make full use of the fx loops! I'm the "meh" guitar player with too much gear.

I've always loved the Line6 stuff, but... They really nerf older products and don't support them. I've had the Pod, Pod Pro, Variax, Xt, etc. but when they don't support older products, it makes me look for something else. After several purchases, which weren't cheap, weren't supported, I decided I wouldn't invest any more time or energy into Line6. They make great products, no doubt, but the company isn't where I want it to be to invest in their ecosystem.

Been using the Helix Floor for a few years for online jamming..... but bought a Quad Cortex 2 weeks ago...... even though I love the Helix I think the Quad responds slightly better to pick attack.... maybe I am just imagining it.... I also prefere the Quads interface.... I am at this moment unsure that I will keep the Helix as I am getting on well with the Quad.... great review though ! 👍👍👍

What do you make of the Headrush Prime? I went from the Pod HD pro X rack to a Headrush Gigboard. I need to do a solo performance of my compositions with backing tracks for a Uni performance in April. Prime has a built in MP3/ Wav. file player as well as the capture technology. The lack of PC editor really makes it a bit of a pain for sitting at my desk at home. Gigboard is small enough to sit nicely but it defeats the purpose of it being a pedalboard.

If we take the words literally, the HX Effects is the best Multifx pedal. I don't use complex signal paths, so in general the HX Stomp is still enough for my effect needs. 1 or 2 more blocks would be great, and if the poly effects weren't so DSP heavy that would be even greater. I used to have the Ampero II Stomp - bought it for the 12 blocks. But there were too many drawbacks with it, and I sold it off.

I'm losing the distinction between a multi-effects unit, a modeler and a profiler. It's all too confusing. Isn't the Helix both a multi-effects unit and a modeler?
@lukather1

I think everyone really knows which one is best ! It isn’t the Helix -( those crappy sliders drive me mad !!! ) I’ve had a helix Rack and still use the native but one unit stands above this and above the cortex ! After 12 years of trying nearly everything ! Through numerous cabs amps and frfrs Just introduce seemless switching and cab lab 4 !! Simple just the best ❤

The form factor of the Helix doesn't really bother me. Especially because I'm always using a volume pedal. I do imagine they will shrink it down in the next version though. I also like the spacing of the footswitches. I messed around with the QC and the switches were so close together.
@revbaxter3681
@revbaxter3681 8 месяцев назад
To be honest, I've never played the capture/profile thing, but I'm not really that interested in it. It seems to me that models have more options for real adjustments. If the next helix only changed by adding this feature, I wouldn't be tempted in the least.

Line 6 nailed it with the Helix. Although I'm not too happy with my JT Variax. It sounds too thin and trebley and the modeling with the piezos is absolute crap if you try to palm mute anything.

Helix is too large just to use for effects. I'd use HX effects for that. But again, these days, there's so much good stuff these days, it's really a pick what interface you like, and go with it. I also think when Helix came out, it needed the size to be considered "professional".
@jackprice7828
@jackprice7828 8 месяцев назад
Personally it would take a lot to peel me away from my HX Stomp. It has allowed me to create great effects and very usable amp models to use in live performance, but with a small footprint. Since the last updates, the effects are no longer cheesy, but excellent and stand up against any effects around. One critique I would have for Line 6. Improve the overdrives and distortions and improve the Fender and Marshall models.

Helix until now has been the best....now new units come with natural feeling , natural feedback, type of playing. As I still love my helix more by far on effects alone helix still kills it other than Fractal. Going forward if these units matter which brand can't get the natural feel thing amazing then don't bother creating one it will fail....as old as Helix is it's soo competitive with current units on every other aspect and in most cases kills them. I have a few now, and many before. Still have my helix and love it....but the feel just isn't there

If you get the hr prime, you can do the touch screen and capture stuff. It may be a little large, but it is still WAY smaller than my pedalboard. For some reason, the hr doesnt get much love. I have one, and a helix, and I like both for different reasons. I dont hear a great difference in tones between all of these units. I guess my ears arent as refined. I have owned and gigged a princeton, d reverb, ultra chorus, peavey special, jcm 800, katana, thr10, and even gigged a couple years with a peavey rage. Non of these modelers give me the feeling of the amps, but they sound just like the recorded songs people hesr on the radio. They jyst lack a lil something in the feel dept. Still have the princeton (my first amp bought used in 1968) and Intend on keeping it. Also still gave the Katana and the thr10. Do not care to lug amps around to gigs anymore. YMMV. It is a GREAT time to be a guitar player!

Well, how many guitar shops are reselling Fracktal gear, come on, how many ... I'll wait. That's because guitar shops would stock this stuff and it wouldn't sell because of the price point. If something doesn't sell it HAS to be discounted, and if it got discounted it would eventually erode the exorbitant prices that Fracktal charge, there is no competition. I mean how expensive is the unit that is shipped to America from China, using Chinese labour, actually cost. Fracktal are only looking out for their bottom line. The only international dealer that I know of is in Australia and that's because they need to change out the power supply to work here. By the way I would class NAMM as using world class engineering and doesn't even charge a cent for it not a fricking cent - so shove that up your Cliff.
