Is the Internal Combustion Engine Dead?

Given the recent announcements from companies like GM, Ford, and other major vehicle manufacturers, stating that they are going to discontinue production of vehicles with internal combustion engines by the year 2035, we may very well be looking at the end of the internal combustion engine. I don’t believe this is something that will happen overnight, but by the year 2100, we may very well be all electric when it comes to personal transportation.
What are your thoughts on this change? What concerns do you have about electric vehicles? Are you ready to give up your internal combustion engine for electric?
I look forward to your responses in the comments.

In Germany they shut down all of their Nuclear power stations and now you’re so many people got electric cars they have had to reopen some coal fired ones.😳
@andrestnt
@andrestnt 3 года назад
its the fear of nuclear power.
@alexku8452
@alexku8452 3 года назад
@@andrestnt It is not that easy. It is not actually the fear of nuclear power, but at the time of the Fukushima accident, it was just the cumulation of a number of issues and plans regarding discarding nuclear power plants anyways. And what you can call sort of a "fear" is the sad fact, that there have been small incidents and older and older power plants showing their age more and more, causing plants taking ofline anyways. The main reason why there have been thoughts about geting rid of nuclear plants was the still unsolved issue of what to do with all the nuclear waste. They tried dumping it into an old mine years ago, now running an expensive operation as all those waste barells started rusting and were leaking and contaminating ground water. And no one likes glow in the dark ground water that is needed for drinking water. So they are still in search of a place geologically stable enough to dump I don´t even know how many tons of nuclear waste, to rest and subside for thousands of years or unless someone has a really good idea on how to process the stuff in a safe manner. One of the main problems, of course no one wants a nuclear dump in about within 500 miles of their home. And Germany is not big enough to just dump everything into some uninhabitet area in the middle of a desert. (actually most parts are quite densely populated around here) Same with nuclear power plants, out of fear something might happen because someone employed bozo to run theplant or some power company wanted to save another million in repairs, no one wants nuclear power plants near by as well. The coal power plants had actually been planned to have some still operating, some on standby and as weird as it seems, 2 or 3 just newly built. but those builts have been projects going on for over a decade now, that is only why, as coal power plants are supposed to be phased out until 2038 as well to get more CO2 neutral. So what do we have left? there is some water power, but it makes up a low percentage part, different than for example in Norway. There are large solar arrays, but those are expensive, high in maintenance, and as some claim, they take up to much area of otherwise farmland or woods. wind power? No one wants those nearby as well as they make noise (which became less with newer designs but sadly is an undeniable fact) and they make moving shadows, some people are afraid of in fear of health issues. I cannot tell if it is a scientifically proven issue or not, but right now they have to be built about 1500 m away from homes which deprives us of precious locations to create clean energy.. Ohand of course some claim those kil birds and other animals... There are some off shore wind parks in the north sea, but not enough grid capacity to get this power down to bavaria for example. Oh and if you couldn´t imagine already, no one seems to want power lines near their homes as well... Yeah I know, at some point it just gets ridiculous. Everyone demands unexpensive, eco friendly and reliable electric power, but no one wants to have production site or transport lines. some arguments can be understood, for others, if electricity is such a problem I would ask those who see it as a problem then to just start not using electricity any more, or just the absolute minimal amount possible. Good luck theese days. You see, people are weird about that here in Germany, and I assume it may be the same in other countries as well. I think it is undeniable that we have to reduce our CO2 output, but I am not convinced we have the means to do it within the time frame politicians aim for. And even if technically possible, then there is still a huge issue with people just not wanting to give up a certain convenience or habits. Aboout electric vehicles I see two main issues. They are way to expensive for most people and there are still way to few charging options. Not everyone can put a charger in their own garage for different reasons (starting with not having a garage). About the power needs of those chargers, as long as not every charger is an actual super charger using the fastest possible charging all the time, it should not be an issue. They tried in a larger apartement building with about 85 electric vehicles to find out if indeed with all vehicles charging at night there would be a peak, and indeed, there was not. So most likely with realistic demands people have for their driving habits, even with each house having at least one charger, we should be fine. Most people here come home late afternoon and don´t move their car until the next morning, that leaves more than 10 or even 12 hours of time to charge over night with reduced power. sounds sufficient. But just as everyone compares it with regular refueling and thinking like, but what if... everyone expects to get a way to recharge a car to full in 45 minutes.

How many nuclear powered ships/submarines are at the bottom of the ocean polluting the water?
@Merethos
@Merethos 3 года назад
The main reason is nuclear waste, which is why Germany shut down nuclear power plants. Nobody on this planet has a really solid solution for the end deposit for this dangerous rubbish. Sure atomic energy is good to produce a stable energy income, but in the long term, it is better to find a better solution where you can handle the risks better. For France which produce nearly 80 per cent of their energy with atomic plants, there is a big problem. To produce energy with atomic plants you need uranium 235 and that is a dead end. In some years there will be lesser of that in the ground to find. France is also in Mali to protect its main uranium mines from terrorist attacks. To secure the energy stability of the home country. Greetings from Germany

I get the sentimentality, as I've got a '72 El Camino on the back burners with a rebuilt engine ready for it, though I feel as if it will be time to move on to the next tech (eventually anyway). Electrification is the next era for hotrodding. I'm already considering acquiring tesla parts to convert my elco to full electric, rather than dealing with rudimentary fuel injection and 25+ year old parts. Maybe converting gasoline powered ices to some sort of alcohol for the stubborn car enthusiasts would be a compromise, but we will see as time passes.

Besides, even if I get the car running with the parts I have, I still have the plan to convert the car to full electric anyway, even if that is long time from today. Selling off my running gear today would give me a huge jump start to the eventual fate for that car as it is. Don't get me wrong, as I enjoy internal combustion engines, but I'm fairly certain that we are at the end of mass adoption for that tech. @@myrtistaylor5759 I agree with you partly that computers do not belong in cars. There’s absolutely no reason that a computer should control functions like windows or door locks or starting of the vehicle, however computer controlled engines have very obvious and significant advantages over carbureted engines not that there isn’t a pro and con to each however a little bit of learning/teaching and a fuel injected computer is not hard to understand at all especially with the software available these days to communicate and reprogram them just takes a little bit of a learning curve. Mentioning my previous comment about modern day ignition systems like the one I put on my old 350 earlier this week when I was changing the oil I accidentally bumped one of my eight coils and the harness came off of it immediately the truck started running like shit and my engine light came on obviously first thing to do is to scan the light and the code said ignition coil F circuit so I immediately looked at that and realized I had accidentally unplugged it right there the repair took under three minutes for a diagnosis and correction. Not that you would not have been able to see under the hood and obviously find what was the mistake but if you understand electronic systems it can make diagnosing modern vehicles a lot less tedious. Now try explaining to a young person that carbureted engines naturally aspirated will always make more power, they don’t seem to understand that a carb cools down the air charge prior to it entering the combustion chamber A long winded answer and again pros and cons to each but for daily driving in today’s age computer seems to be best for me

As for urban areas, the average homeowner should have electric vehicles, while contractors, construction, maintenance, etc that need an internal combustion engine still have access to them. One key selling point of pure EVs is low maintenance, throwing an ICE at it in the form of hybrid drive train re-introduces a heap of complexity and mechanical losses. I'd be more in favor of a separate generator dumping power on the DC bus, then the auxiliary power source can be whatever is most cost-effective at the time and possibly swappable. Long-term though, I'm really hoping there will be a breakthrough in cost-effectively scaling up direct ethanol and methanol fuel cells so ICE can be ditched altogether - no point in having an ICE when equivalent power fuel cells + electric motors are 50+% more fuel-efficient.

@FlesHBoX
@FlesHBoX 3 года назад
A couple points: 1. A lot of the most recent improvements to hydrogen production through electrolysis have come in the form of finding catalysts that are cheaper to produce using more common materials. 2. Hydrogen for cars will come from production plants, meaning using it in your car will be no different than using gasoline. You will pull into a filling station and fill your tank with hydrogen (though it will be a different specific process, as the hydrogen will be stored at high pressures of 300-700 bar rather than just free flowing). None of the catalysts would be present in your vehicle. 3. Dirty electricity is a problem with the power generation, not the electric car. Whether your electric car is super green or just merely green is highly dependent on where you live and how that power is generated. However, several studies have shown that even in areas with primarily coal power generation, the electric vehicle still comes out at worst equivalent to gasoline. 4. Batteries are actually quite recyclable. The big issue with old batteries being harmful to the environment comes from NOT recycling them. This is an issue with how we deal with them, not with the batteries themselves, though there is still room for improvement in recycling everything in the battery. I would suggest, if you actually want to know about these technologies, rather than simply looking for articles that talk about "the cons of electric vehicles" research the actual technologies. It's easy to fall into the trap of thinking that the guy writing a news article actually knows what he is talking about. 99% of the time, they don't and are merely restating what someone else said without any thought as to that person's qualifications (this goes for both the "electric car bad" crowd as well as the cult of tesla. To actually get an idea about the feasibility of these technologies research the technologies, not the news outlets. As for the actual question "Is the internal combustion engine dead?" Nah, not for some times at least. Even after the last ICE car rolls off the production line there will likely be a decade or two where gasoline is still somewhat easily available, and even after that will remain a staple of collectors, though I do suspect that 30 or so years from now most ICE vehicles will have been modified to take different fuels and most will be used for easy cruising to the car show to show off an antique.

I remember in the late 1960’s the conversation was about how emission controls on cars would be the end of hot rods and people working on their own cars. For 10 years it sure appeared that would be true. Then by the 80s Petro heads figured out how to deal with controls and government realized that a low number of hot rods were not going to end civilization as we know it. ICE cars will exist for a long time, just as we still have sail boats . And realize that sail boats today are far faster and better than when they were a 100 years ago. The difference is today sail boats are used for pleasure not everyday transportation.

The thing about electric cars, regardless of whether or not manufacturing and usage of electric cars reduces emissions, electric motors are more responsive than a combustion engine. Faster response times, means more control for the user. More control means better driver assists and better manual drive. What this means is electric cars are just inherently safer to drive and could be a huge factor in reducing accidents annually.

Lithium, the primary resource for these batteries, is simply evaporated out of saline from barren salt flats. Very low impact on the environment, and literally nothing lives in these environments to begin with except for some bacteria. Enough trying to make electric look equivalently bad as ICE. Electric is a clear winner in almost every way. And I love my cars and their engines, too, but no one is every going to take them from you. What do we do with old cars today? We let them burn all the oil they want with no emissions tests required because there are so few left on the road, we don't really care. It will all work out fine.
@moabman6803

True about lithium. But if all cars turn electric, think about how much more mining will need to be done for all the copper needed to run cables in the ground. Also all the cobalt needed for all the batteries. Then the amount of construction work to install a monumental amount of infrastructure. Literally every city block will have to be rewired for at least about 150 chargers per residential apartment type city block. Heavy cable will need to be run to Yosemite, death valley, blue ridge mountains, Joshua tree, and on and on. Every corner of the USA will need chargers.
