I can't directly address your comparison, but I have discussed differences in US regions compared to Japan. The consensus is that the West Coast is more similar to Asia than the East Coast. In particular, West Coast people are often described as superficially polite. We tend to be polite to your face but don't want to get close. Less likely to get in your face but also less likely to offer to take a stranger out for a beer.

A friend from the South said he recognized honne and tatemae right away. Southerners will be all, "Come on round, have some tea and stay a while" and secretly be hoping you leave soon. At least in Carolina where he was from.

Honne and tatemae exactly. People who grew up on the East Coast are always complaining about that, "I just say what I think" and we are thinking "No way" while the whole time smiling and hoping that if we don't say anything more they will go away.@@Exjapter
