There are very few pedals hyped as much as the Analogman King of Tone. But why? And how does it sound? Is the King of Tone really the holy grail pedal? Let's find it out!
Funny enough, I haven't found a proper demo of the pedal on youtube so I thought I'll give it a try. Most people only show one sound / one setting, without show off its true potentials and versatility.

I like the way this pedal sounds with humbuckers. I truly love the way it sounds with single coils. It is the foundation of my overdriven and distortion tone. Thank you for the excellent review.

Great Video @KrisBarocsi! I love the KOT and its a OD/Boost that stays on my main pedalboard while other OD do get switched out. But I'm careful when giggin' with it in the past because I had incident when someone tried to steal it while I was performing. So advice to other KOT owners, watch your pedal when giggin. Love your youtube channel and look forward to more of your videos. Cheers!

Great video, Kris! Yeah, I love my KOT! I got it a couple years ago after waiting 17 months, (the wait at that time). It was worth every minute of it! It should be pointed out that you don't have to pay anything when you go on the mailing list. They simply let you know when it's your turn to order and you can order or pass. They also pretty much let you order any time after that, so if you were notified you could order a KOT, but were unable to at the time, once you're able to, they'll take care of you. ALSO...as you pointed out, it's not magic. It's just a fantastic pedal. In the hands of a player it's right for, it's spectacular. It's not right for everyone, but most players who love dynamics and control, will love it! And, much like the KLON, the hype is not the doing of Analogman. They only sell for so much "used" because people are willing to pay it. Whenever a batch is made ready for sale, Mike puts a couple on ebay for the regular price to help ward off anyone who's going to pay someone else an obscenity amount of money for one. So my feeling is this: it's absolutely worth waiting and getting it. But there are lots of great pedals out there and if you are the type of guy that despises anything with any hype, I'm sure if you scroll the comments, you'll get great recommendations. I LOVE gain pedals. here is no best, but there are a lot of contenders. To each his own!

Nice. I did not know you had a channel. Thomann just knows how to hire staff, obviously. The talent and knowledge that has come through that store is stunning. I consider your opinions very seriously when i evaluate a product and hope you begin a boom on the Tube and take it to a high level. One sub today at least.

The alternative is the price of tone and you can get it NOW only on Wednesday’s on the Analogman buy site! It’s made with the same components as well. It also has a boost option that the KOT doesn’t which is a MOD added to the Price Of Tone. So, the POT can even be a better pedal for some and cost half as much.

Thanks for the demo and info. I've had a KOT on my board for about 8 years. I took it off for one gig to try out another pedal and totally regretted doing that. I've also had it set up like yours with a right side overdrive (high gain version) and left side being a clean boost. I recently got a Warm Audio Centavo that I'm using as a boost (really does sound nice for lead tones), so I haven't been using the KOT left side much. I recently changed the dip switches to 'distortion mode' on the left and really like the saturated distortion coming from that little pedal - sounds great for an alternative lead sound. Also, I think the KOT only really comes alive when the volume is over 2 o'clock on either side, then set drive to taste. If the amp is too loud, turn the amp down, not the volume on the KOT. I'm lucky, I didn't pay that much for the pedal second hand. Would I pay $1200 CAN for a new one if I lost my current pedal? Probably not, but I'd certainly miss having it on my board.

Kris, have you tried the Six pedal from Tsakalis? It's supposedly loosely based on KOT, Timmy and Bluesbreaker pedals. Just wondering what your thought were on it....

Great vid. It does have great tone but.... having that LP and that Tele as a test base. Heh! How would HB sound? I’m too guilty of being from the instant gratification team so I went another direction. That coupled with being an older hobbyist at this point... meh. Too much hype is bad for my ticker. Cheers!

Euh, I'm 54 years old. I'm not waiting 3 years for an overdrive pedal. It does sound great, but I've been playing for a long time, I think I'll get by with some lesser overdrive pedals. That said, I've got an Analogman Sunface, which a local store in Austin orders directly from Analogman and stocks new. I feel like it's as superior in the fuzz category as King of Tone is in the overdrive category, with all of Mike's same expertise and painstaking attention to detail, carefully chosen and tested NOS parts, really well thought-out tweaks to a classic circuit, etc., but the wait list was...zero days, I just walked into the store and bought it.

Great video, great playing! Yeah, I keep coming back to the KOT. I have an original and also one with the higher gain mod. I also have the giant TIM pedal and all the Lovepedal stuff etc. I've spent way too much time collecting pedals I don't use. But I seem to always come back to the KOT. It just has something. Now I have the Helix update I might take the KOT out of the loop. Helix seems to be doing everything I want now. Maybe my ears are bad but I can't tell when the loop to the KOT is on or off now.

Which KOT do you prefer David? And do you have to Switch the pots Inside to an Higher Gain mode, or does just the distortion mode has more gain? I'm going to get one on eBay, but I don't know if i should get the higher gain mode...

Armin Sanladerer I never max the dials on the low gain mod so for me low gain mod is fine. The high gain mod has slightly more compression but that is not really what I am looking for out of the KOT.

Great vid dude! Here's my question: You have the higher gain option- Is the tone any different on the distortion? Or can you get exactly the same sound with the higher gain option by just setting the drive pot lower? I'm getting higher up the list and I think I will get the higher gain option, but i wonder if you sacrifice anything, cheers

Hey, thanks for your comment! There is a very small difference in sound and I actually prefer the higher gain voicing. It sounds a little more amp-like (a bit more treble and less mids). I think it's best ordering the higher gain option just for one side. Then you have both and you can choose which ever fits more to the song you're playing. Cheers!

Chris, what do you think about the D&M drive? I had the D&M drive on my board during my 2 & 1/2 year wait for my KoT. I know it's not the same thing but it is extremely versatile and widely available. I do really like my KoT. I ordered high gain on both sides. I'm thinking about putting the D&M back on the board too. Never can have enough OD pedals on the board :)

Completely disagree. The transparency of tone when switching from your clean sound to the KoT is greater than any other distortion I've ever heard. In addition to that, this is a dual overdrive pedal (one side feeding into the other) which means its competition isn't just any random overdrive or distortion, but other dual overdrive pedals. Here's an over hour-long comparison between KoT and three other high-end dual OD pedals on the market, and sure there are similarities, but anyone with ears can hear the difference: ru-vid.comiYHAOxXrdDY?feature=share

I have the low gain, KOT on my board and a RC Booster, and the original Zendrive 2, and The Andy Timmons Distortion, for my Overdrive. All of the Pedals are good, but the true test is playing live with a Band. King of tone really sounds the best. And it does sound better with the gain at least at 12 o’clock. But way better with volume at least at two o’clock o’clock. I’m right now running into a Magnatone Stereo Panoramic, or my 66 Deluxe.

Great description and glad to see you here. There is a Far east company making a king of clone by order only. I cant believe they're screening components like Mike. To me it will open pandora's box into are people like Mike creating and choosing components more on a psychological level or truly a technical level. Das "King of Tone" klingt wirklich hammermäßig, aber ich habe gesehen, dass das Pedal gar nicht mehr hergestellt wird. Welche Alternative würdest Du empfehlen? Do you record your guitars straight from the line out of your ox box since you have one? Or do you still mic your amps? I currently mic my amps to record them but I'm also thinking about an ox. I want to crank my amps a little more and yeah, silent recording is nice sometimes if circumstances don't let you play loud all the time. Recording is my focus. Do you recommend it?

from ether I have exclusively used the ox box since I got it. So in all of my videos where you can see it behind me. It took me a couple of weeks of tweaking to like it to be honest. But I’m a huge fan ever since. If it didn’t blow my mind with it’s sound I would still be using my mics. Now it literally sounds like my rig recorded with really good mics. I will shoot a video on the ox box soon including my settings and a comparison with real mics. 🤘 Stay tuned. Cheers man!

Since recording amps needs a lot of tweaking as well - would love to replace that process with the ox. I have a pretty good sounding way to record silently through my board into Guitar Rig. But I miss recording my amps sound and tremolo that way. Looking forward to your video :)

Thanks for the video! I have one and I was surprised to see it was going for almost 1000 euro on the second hand market. That's crazy! And offcourse I am tempted to sell this off. But after some thinking and playing solo with it I won't, because it's just such a great pedal. Would I ever pay 1000 euro for it? Offcourse not, but I have one that sounds great, so I won't sell it. Also I hate it when people make money on products like this off a hard working man overseas. Mike could sell them for 1000 euro, but he doesn't, and that is also what is so charming about boutique pedals. Cheers! Love your videos!

Analogman also makes the Prince of Tone. The Prince of Tone is a one sided King of Tone. Put two Prince of Tones on your board and you have the King of Tone. The Prince of Tone is available once a week as they come in. You may have to try for a few weeks, but you can get them without waiting all that long. I am happy with just one Prince of Tone and haven't added a second. I mix it with a Klon(e) for gain stacking. Klon(e) -> Prince of Tone = Killer. I also run my Prince of Tone at 18v for more headroom.

Great video and good thoughts on the King of Tone. I sat on the waiting list for nearly three years before I finally got the email from Mike to order mine... Maybe I could have lived without it, but I'm sure glad I waited and got one. No regrets - love this pedal - worth every penny!

ok how does this pedal compare to the boss od1 the original from the 70s?cause o can get all those sounds from that pedal with just the od knob.massive fat midd.

The OD1 has way more mids and less presence and low end, than the King of Tone. This sounds more like a cranked tube amp, not that much like a crazy mid focused overdrive pedal. I hope that makes sense to you.

What components in the KoT can be qualified as "rare" honestly ? I'm sincerely curious about it. Kind of makes me think about the "mysterious germanium diodes" in the Klon. I have a Kot, wait 2 years for it. It's a nice OD, but imho, the hype around that pedal is caused by the wait and the crazy second hand prices, more than by the intrinseque sonic qualities of the King of Tone.

The only "rare" components are diodes it uses. The pedal uses a MA856 and 1S1588. They are not easy to find (at least for cheap) but no so RARE as one may think. Another thing to notice, these diodes are used to clip the signal. There are other "not so rare" diodes that can, and will, do the same job and sound similar.

I have seen videos on how people design these things. It's basically either a couple of diodes in front of a gain stage or in the negative or positive feedback loop. or sometimes a gain stage is by raising the input beyond the capacity of the next stage. That is how most tube amps do distortion. The differences in the billions of pedals are mainly due to the differences In the resistors and capacitors, which increase or decrease the bass or treble or mid-range at various stages. a good pedal will reduce the amount of fizz while not increasing the bass so much that it sounds boomy or artificial.

What about the presence trimpot? Did you leave it at zero or increased a little bit?

shawdown I always leave the presence trim pot on 2 (maybe 2,5). That seams to work best in my setup. My Revv has tons of low end and mids so a bit of extra presence gives me that chime I love.

it sounds good but I don't see what's exceptionnal about it. In terms of dynamics, I still haven't found anything better than the crunch of an old-school mono-channel (non-master volume) British amp, whether a Marshall, Vox, Carlsbro or Selmer. I'm not that big of a pedal fan, I like some of them, but I'd rather use an attenuator to tame an overdriven amp which sounds more organic to my ears to any diode circuit. For flexibility I usually add an extra EQ, either a pedal or a rackmount device.

@KC Ive built a few clones of the pedal and found some ways to mod it for even better tone imo . and it has nothing to do with the clipping diodes ha !! Don't get me wrong , its a good sounding pedal , but at the end of the day ... it's an op amp based overdrive pedal thats been rehashed a 100 times etc .

Well that depends on your other pedals really. If you have at least one other pedal with a good (a really good) buffer, go for the true bypass version. If you mostly have true bypass pedals and / or Boss standard pedals with their "ok" buffer, get the buffered bypass KOT because that will freshen up the signal way better. cheers!

Question, can a JTM45 style Marshall Clone, with a King of Tone, do a fair version of the later Marshall 100w amps of the 1970 period, you know, the Holy Grail Marshalls, like AC/DC used on record (??)

Mark Edwards I never tried that, but I bet it would sound heroic. I would use just a little gain from the king of tone and set the volume up high to push the JTM into saturation. But don’t forget: the KoT is not a “Marshall amp in a box” so it won’t necessarily give you a full on plexi sound.

@@KrisBarocsi I'm working a big idea. I've got three amp heads, a Mojave Marshall 50w clone, a Mojave Marshal JTM45 clone, and a Mesa Lonestar set on 50w Tweed. I mount each of these three short-heads on two 1x12 cabinets, making three "mini-stacks". The Mojave's have line-outs with volume controls and ground-lifts. I've got all the Lehle SgoS pedals, which when using Mojave's line-outs, can make the Lonestar a wet slave to either of the two Mojave's as dry amps, or, alternatively, each amp running separately with just the Lonestar playing the delays and reverbs. The Lehle midi functions implement amp and effect pedal combinations, thus avoiding dedicated midi programs for each song. The question becomes, can a JTM-45 with a King of Tone and conventional effects pedalboard do nearly the same thing?

Acdc used solid state amps on studio recordings. Not 100 watt marshall. They used the 100 watts for live shows.hope that helps.

I have a Rev 2 and a Rev 3 running into a Bogner Uberschal the tone is incredible no way I’m waiting two years I didn’t get if the pedal so good why you need a rev 2 per amp hmmm it’s the king but let’s add a Rev 2 lol

Thinking of alternatives, to my mind came TC Electronic MojoMojo (the realy cheap alternative), JHS Morning Glory (obvious choice, little bit cheaper, much more available) and probably Earthquaker device Palisades? Do you have any experience with some of these pedals?

stanislavmigra yes I did play all three of these. The only one that sounds similar to the KoT is the Morning Glory. You should also try the Wampler Pantheon. That’s also a great alternative. If you guys are interested in a shootout I am more than happy to do one. 💪

Nice demo bro, great playing. Which is the point - you have good tone. No pedal will give a bad player good tone - that comes from feel, innate ability and practice. Just saying. OD pedals are pretty much OD pedals.

brendan powers thanks Brendan! You’re right about the tone: the player makes a way bigger difference than an OD pedal or an amp. Still, I’m really choosy about the gear I‘m playing and I definitely play better when I’m inspired by the sound. The KoT does everything right: tightness, tone, versatility and clean up. It’s hard to find something that does all of these that well. 👍🏻 My brother, Kelly Joe is awesome by the way. Haha!

The Prince of Tone is half of a King of Tone... mostly. KOT is hand built in the US. The Prince is made in Japan IIRC, and has some surface mounted components. Mike had to make some changes to adjust for not having the majik diodes. Does that matter? I’ve spent too much time listening to videos with the KOT and comparing it to others, but it seems the Prince may have a bit more gain and be ever so slightly brighter? I’ve been trying to buy a Prince of Tone for months and months. The website says it’s available on Wednesdays but not for me. It’s not their fault - supply lines are screwed up for all sorts of things. However, I sort of gave up and got a Wampler Pantheon. Same thing? Not exactly. Is it a really good overdrive pedal? Yeah and I’ve just scratched the surface. I still look at buyanalogman.com every Wednesday though...

Jim plays a Telecaster Thinline custom made by Telenator, (that's me and my partner Mike Mascagna), and it's the first modern guitar he's ever toured with. He's a real good guy and player. I got to know him through a lifelong friend, Mark Rudzinski, who is there dedicated sound man and road manager. I have owned a KoT pedal and use it more for rhythm parts. I set it up so it gives me 3 stages of gain all at the same volume. I can cover anything from Creedence to Stone Temple Pilots without getting to loud in the mix. Then I tap an Analog man TS9 for solo boost as need. Great combination. I enjoyed your review. Great playing, and very thorough. Rock on. Bob

I was gonna say the king of tone can cover a little more ground versatility wise and is a little less mid heavy but if you already have the morning glory and Timmy, the klon would give you a wholr new flavor and it stacks awesome with the morning glory.

Get the Gladio. I like the Duellist, great pedal but sold it after buying the Galdio. It’s the next level imho. Sold my Protein too. Haven’t sold my King of Tone yet because it just does something special that’s hard to explain, especially when stacked. It’s so natural sounding in person, it literally does not change your amp or guitar tone one bit and as you turn the Drive and Vol up it enhances it and adds really nice sustain. The Galdio has me considering selling the KOT for the first time because it can do the low gain but it also do a saturated high gain with clarity with crazy amounts sustain ( a compression switch helps ) and beautiful harmonic overtones I’ve never heard from any other pedal. It’s based on a Dumble preamp but it doesn’t sound like any other Dumble pedal I’ve owned or played. Plus, it comes in a beautiful brushed steel enclosure. I’d say a Gladio with a Jan Ray or KOT is all you need. Then again I have a Ceriatone Centura, TS-10, 808, 9 so maybe I’m not the guy to give advice lol. Actually if I sell my King of Tone, it will be for a Chase Bliss Preamp MK II.

I'm glad I sold mine. It was nothing special, it was beaten off my board by a lovepedal Amp 11, a far more natural sounding overdrive. The KOT always had this horrible nasally tone going on, a klon is a far nicer sounding clean boost, the 2 sides of the KOT on together sounded wooly and very underwhelming. Yes, hype is the word, the holy grail is still the Klon with some other overdrive into it for dirt.
