I have a hyper mag and it is unbelievable, the casting distance with braid outcasts my curado dc by 10-15 yards easily. I cant justify buying an aldebaran with the smaller spool size when the hyper mag has a bigger spool and a relatively similar weight, at nearly half the price
I fished 4 of them last year. Had to sell them due to needing the money but they are really solid reels, especially when you find them for like 220 bucks or so.
I usually agree with you but not this time. The best reel for the money IMO is the new Zillion G from Diawa. I can spool it with my thumb off. It weighs 6.7 ounces and it's butter..
Love the Alde B mgl 50 for jerkbaits and my met for jig and bottom, they are hard to keep clean... I won't buy used reels though, in case people trash the gears personally. New Zillion looks promising though but still pricey.
I’ve only ever used two Lews reels, one spinning and one casting, and both were around the $100 price point. I understand they’re not their highest quality stuff, but it was bad enough to where I can’t see buying their high end stuff. I’ve bought plenty of shimano and daiwa $100 price point reels and was so impressed by those offering that I bought some of their high end stuff. I agree, it’s not all about weight, would like to hear note about the performance of the hyper mag vs the metanium
I've been very happy with the higher end of Lew's offerings over the years. The Metanium is smoother and can toss lighter lures with the MGL spool, but the hypermag will beat it in distance (and it's cheaper and lighter).
I am a Daiwa fan. Own high end (Zillion and steez A). I hear you the entry line of Lews are average (had the 99$ speed spool and bought the 69$ American Hero for my son which was a waste of money) but I have a Lews tournament lite and it is surprising.Very nice reel. Prretty sure the Hypermag and the Pro-Ti are great reels. At the $300 price point, I prefer Lews baitcasters to Shimano. Had reliability issues with several shimanos out of Malaysia.
@@buzzjet1914 the high end shimano reels is why I started moving more towards daiwa. Bought a metanium dc and was pretty underwhelmed. The daiwa sv 103 reel is one bad ass reel for $200
Hi Brian i swapped the handles from my Pro-TI and the Hyper Mag. I think the colours match better. The Lews Reel Covers are great value for ANY low profile Reel. Speaking of covers YOU got mail in about 4 weeks from today 😬✌️ Do you have any Metaniums MGL laying around your house? Or is it more Daiwa you use? I think the Metanium MGL i such a nice reel and makes a pretty sweet combo with any P5 available. (If that ain’t YOLO enough for you) GUARD your Mailbox 👀👀👀

I've used this for my weightless worm reel for 2 seasons now. Handles light baits extremely well, and I can turn the spool tension completely off and put the brakes down at 3 and rarely get a backlash. It's not as smooth as my curado K, but I did put in some mid-tier boca hybrid bearings this past winter when they had a sale. It reels a lot smoother with just tape on the spool, how it'll act when I get some weight on the line, we'll see. Overall because its so light and handles light baits so well, it's going to stay as my worm reel.
One thing I forgot to add. They REALLY should've put a support bearing or bushing on the pinion gear. When you take the spool out and crank the handle, it makes me cringe.
Great review as always. Have you gotten your hands on a lews custom lite slp? I have one and it is a workhorse for shallow to medium depth fishing. Today I through a 3/8oz keitech jig then a 110+1 then a 1/5oz Ned all without changing the breaks. It is 4.9oz and like $280 but I bought mine for $215. Definitely a great reel to try I think “The Reel Test” has even used it for bfs. Nice review though.
Lmk if you want me to dm you the name of the guys website on insta he sells hyper mags for like $230 and custom lites for $215. He has a ton of other stuff also.
Thanks for the review, I have three hyper mags in my arsenal paired up with Kistler Zbones... I do think they are great reels and a great bargain I was able to get mine for around $185 new.... I do not have a pro TI yet have considered it many times.You can usually find it on sale for about $259. What's your opinion between the two is it worth upgrading to the TI or just staying with the Hyper Mag?.. I also would like to try the new Shimano matanium (I only have the previous versions) and would like to try a new ZILLION.
Have you tried the lews custom lite? Almost as light as an aldebaran, it’s not a standard capacity spool but it’s lighter than the hyper mag and frequently goes on sale as well. I don’t think it’s an apples to apples comparison but there isn’t many reviews out there of it.
I’m stuck I want to get the hypermag but I also want to get the curado dc. What do you think? I already have a slx dc so I’m leaning toward the hypermag. Plus I work at a fishing store and I can get it for 190. And we don’t have the curado dc. What do you think?
