How does the old Line 6 Pod X3 hold up?
Will live in an age where there's a new amp modeler being released every 5 seconds.
Guitar players and engineers alike are always clamoring for the latest and greatest:
Kemper
AxeFX
Helix
One of the 57,543 amp sim plugins being released on the market every other day..
I have friends who, literally, buy a new amp modeler EVERY YEAR.
The funny thing is I always hear the same things:
"Oh, the newest (latest and greatest modeler) sounds just like a real tube amp!"
"I'm gonna sell my old amp modeler...it's not capable of producing a decent tone, anyway."
"I can FINALLY get rid of my 5150 now that I have the newest (latest and greatest modeler)."
I've been hearing this exact same statement since the first Line 6 POD was released wayyy back in 1998!
I've always found this topic fascinating considering it really doesn't make much sense when you think about it.
How can a piece of gear sound "just like a real amp" one year and not the next?
I've decided to break out my dusty old Line 6 POD X3 from 2008 and put it to the test.
Lets see if an outdated, 12-year-old amp modeler should be put to use..
Or put up on eBay.

Thanks for the info and demo!! Just curious, Could you put it through another IR... use pod as amp ??? then maybe use a kool IR instead of one on the pod??/

Wow. My father gave me his X3 Live a few years ago. I tried only the Insane amp model because I thought this is the max gain you can get out of this and it was just underwhelming. Boy I was wrong. I simply copied your settings, plugged in my 7 string and was absolutely blown away. I totally agree now with your philosophy that you need to learn your gear that you own rather than buying new stuff all the time. That you very much for that lesson. :)

Dude, pods sounds amazing! Amp modelling really hasn't come that far since the Pod was released. I first realized this when my AXEFX Standard (first gen) lost a blind shootout against the TSE X50 plugin. This was verified when I learned that Buster from HLB switched from an AXEFX to TSE X50 lol. The AXEFX cost me $1000 second hand, and TSE X50 was $50... It took me only a few days to sell the AXEFX to a djent fanboy who was gassing super hard over it. Hype and marketing is a crazy thing!
@FrightboxRecording
@FrightboxRecording 4 года назад
I couldn't agree more. My favorite in the box tone is the TSE X50 loaded with my own impulse response. I've never had anyone call out when I used it in a mix vs. a real amp...EVER.

A little late, but this was a great video! I got a POD X3 Live about 3 years got when I got more serious about playing and recording, and it's been one of my best purchases ever! I finished my band's album last fall and all the rhythm tones were 100% POD X3. Line 6 really nailed the X3 generation in terms of flexibilty and versatility. Two fully-featured signal chains, mic and aux inputs, DI over the ASIO drivers, and so much more. The POD HD was a step back in some ways IMO. Not to mention, the editor GearBox still works like a charm on Windows, and you can use POD Farm 1 with all amp models when the X3 is connected! If somebody still doesn't have a proper modeller, the X3 Live and Pro can still serve as a solid option for both recording as well as live usage. Nonetheless, this was a great video. And if you haven't tried the X3 with IRs, you totally should!
@joshuabeckwith7906

You're totally right man. The X3 is a fantastic modeller for the money now. Had my X3 Pro for 10 years so I know it very well. Recently got an X3 Live for gigging super cheap. £90 to be exact and its in fully working order. The only downsides are to the XT/X3 series is the response can be quite stiff and synthetic sounding, that said to many that's what makes it iconic and also how powerful the EQ section is. Its not amp like and has huge sweeps. It's the X3s greatest strength and its greatest weakness. So much control but almost too much.

i've been playing my bean X3 since 2014 and i love it, the only thing i miss is a FX loop and a decent pedalboard, perhaps i'll switch to a500x only because of this. I have a tip on the X3 if you use the dual tone feature your sound is going to be twice as good

Dude I'm SHOCKED how crushing, clear and balanced those rhythm guitars sound. While I think the speaker is the most important thing in guitar chain, thus ability to load IRs is the single biggest factor in modeling gear, you just proved that it is possible to dial a great sound with stock speaker simulation. On the other hand, having first hand experience and EAR for a great tone that works great IN THE MIX is what enables this. Pros get shit done regardless of the gear that's available. Thanks for sharing this Bobby!

Alot of people say that the pod is crap they only say its crap because they don't know how to dial it in correctly. I use my pod x3 live by going into outputs select preamp mode and I use 2002 angel p- and set the EQ and tone settings to my preferences and going direct into my peavey valveking head going into a Marshall 4x12 and it sounds amazing!

I had sold off my POD X3 bean, the X3 Pro Rack and the X3 Floorboard (and also a Vetta) about a decade ago and went though a bunch of other gear... my rhythm and solo sound? my 2 Tremoverbs and a RoadKing. When I had the X3’s I had my Real gear tones nailed in several patches. I go to Italy frequently and am not able to take my real amps to our home there, but needed something that had my real Mesa tones with me that I could plug into my laptop whenever I needed. After I sold off the X3 gear, it just seemed that I kept trying to get my real amp tones with all the gear that followed at all sorts of price ranges from newer pods to axefx, not to mention various software packages... so a couple of years ago I thought I would look for an X3 bean. I did, it arrived, plugged in and within a few minutes I had my Mesa tones dialed in again... and then picked up the X3 Pro Rack again also... WTH was I thinking? And the also picked up a Vetta again.. again, within a couple of minutes, dialed in My Mesa tones.

Many great players think that X3 had tones that were even better than HD's. The only downside of old Line 6 gear is that their drivers are often unstable on Windows 10 and never machines with USB3. Other than this issue... they sound as good as they sounded when they were released ;)
@gwugluud
@gwugluud 7 месяцев назад
Besides, hardware is more fun. You have an actual piece of gear to play with. Especially a Line 6 Pod X3, with its blood-red color lending an almost toy-like aesthetic, which made it fun to look at, handle and manipulate. I never had any serious complaints about their sounds. There were some eclectic elements among the "normal" amps and stomps, such as synth patches, and one amp sim which was a model of a fuzz distortion box plugged into the power section of a Sunn amp. Lots of interesting sounds, lots of fun.

7:34 "People are quick to spend money without actually learning how to use the tools they already have" - The way I think about it, is that without learning how to extract all of the value out of stuff I already have (assuming is at least half-decent so the juice is worth the squeeze), I will not even be able to *HEAR* what I really want out of the new stuff. Year ago I thought about changing pickups in my Les Paul, but then I realized, that I've never really tried to push them to the best of my ability. So I wouldn't be able to even evaluate potential new pickups... ;)

Until Amplitude, Neural and the other recent VSTs which really do sound like amps, I thought my Line 6 and DigiTech hardware stuff sounded good, but not 100% like actual amps. But that's what I liked about them. I just thought of it as progression, introducing new sounds for guitar and bass, is the way I took it.

What's ace about everyone doing Pod related videos lately is that I've tried to start learning a bit more about production and I'm still using a Pod X3. I feel like I've never dialled in anything amazing with it, even though I've owned it for a decade, but it's great for live and for demos. Hopefully these videos will show me a thing or two that I can apply to my own tones! I feel as though I dialled in my tone the exact same way you did at the start of the video and changed it over the years, so hopefully I'm on the right track!
@FrightboxRecording
@FrightboxRecording 4 года назад
For me, the trick is to use a tube screamer in the pod, as well as use this exact amp model and cab. I'm pretty picky with heavy rhythm guitar tone and I found this combo to be the most balanced and least phasy sounding. The other thing I love about the POD X3 are all of the rad effects that it comes packed with. Great for overdubs.

I’d love to hear the same demo with the cab bypassed and use a current IR. I’m betting the tone would be even better! I’ve owned L6 gear consistently since 2001. I’ll say their stuff is good but my Axe FX still has something that’s more organic feeling and sounding that the Line 6 doesn’t. I notice it most these days when I go back from my Helix to my AF2. That said my Vetta is still pretty dang good. Lastly if anyone is interested I have a Pod X3 Pro (the rack unit) that I’ve been contemplating selling.

I think that you can get away with some guitar tones just with basic mixing and when it's combined with a bass that's balanced it will make the guitar tone sound sick. I mostly use POD farm now days and I've had it since early 2010s. I think it still sounds good, with a great DI track and bass it's a monster in the mix.

Bought that thing 10 years ago and never changed it, the big floorboard version of it... Two FX chains, bass amps, and cabs, preamp models too if you want to track vocals for your demos... It works, and when you get to see a nice amp in a venue, you go 4cable and have fun... Nowadays that kind of flexibility costs 1600 dollars... That Quad Cortex thing is going to kill me, though...
