Thank you so much for taking the time to really go over the Field Journal! Your feedback, especially about the hook and the bookmarks, is also super helpful since we’re always looking to improve. This is definitely something the team will discuss. Really appreciate you sharing your experience with such care. It means the world to us! 😊
Is there any way to put in a custom request for one of your journals? I'm looking for something almost like this, but with an interior color that doesn't stand out so much. Also, a ranger-green version would be nice.
I have to say that I just purchased mine out from Amazon right after finishing this review. The lochby journal had been sitting there in my shopping cart for almost a year, so that speaks on how good of a review this was.
There's 2 things I think you might have missed here (I only learned about them from another youtuber and I have one of the dang things!) and those are: 1. the strap: you can put your hand through that and open the journal to write in. It lets you hold it open and be a stable writing surface if you're outdoors or just don't have a surface to write on 2. the clasp: there's a loop on the inside of the back cover so you can attach the clasp and then cinch it down. That's nice so you don't have the thing sliding around and being noisy. Also I paused to skulk your book shelves. That is a very impressive collection! Always trust someone with that 2nd Edition Riverside Shakespeare. I carried that around for at least 2 semesters in college!
Yes! I remember lugging that brick around as well! Sometimes only the print Shakespeare will do! Thanks very much for watching and for the great comment.
With regard to the bookmark straps: You don't need to cut them. You can pull them out of the eyelets on the spine of the journal. Same with the elastic notebook straps. You can untie them and pull them out if you don't need them.
I've had this journal and their dot grid Tomoe River notebooks for over 3 years now. Absolutely love it. And I do carry 4 notebooks within, each for different tasks. I use mine outdoors everyday for work, and it's held up beautifully down in the southern New Mexico desert. I actually added an additional ribbon so i have a page marker in all 4 notebooks. Highly recommend! I'm sure it'll get plenty of use for you, HJ.
Thanks very much! We differ a bit on the ribbons! That’s Ok and how each of us respond to things. Thanks so much for your excellent perspective and for watching the video. Thank you!
As always, thanks for a thoughtful review. I've had this Lochby journal cover for some time. In my experience, just about any A5 journal will fit. As you say, high quality and lots of options. I thought I'd mention a bit of history: Lochby rebranded themselves from Bond Travel Gear, quite a while back. The Bond journal cover was a very similar the current one, but made of nylon with a YKK zipper closure all round instead of the aluminum hook and loop they use now. Interior was also similar but designed to hold one A5 journal. Mine came with the Bond A5 hard cover journal with 68gsm Tomoe River paper with a 5mm dot grid. I've been pleased with both Lochby and Bond and have used them for years. In my experience these folks have always been committed to making quality products from durable materials.
Lochby has sent their products to so many people, I don't know how the company is staying afloat. They sent one of those to my daughter, some time ago. It does seem like it's nicely organized and sturdy, and it attracts attention everywhere she takes it. Nice review, HJ.
It’s as good a marketing strategy as any. I had fun making the video. To be honest, I had no idea anyone else had done a review. I live in my own bubble. Thanks for watching.
I own this journal and love it! It's the Teddy Roosevelt of journals! Worth every penny. There's nothing for me to add since your review hit all the highlights. I expect to own it for the duration. Then it can be passed onto my grandson.
I've had this in two colors, and almost everything else Lochby makes for a few years. I love their planner inserts as well. I'm with you on the closer loop and zipper compartment. Thanks for a great review!
The Field Journal is a really cool addition to a backpack or day bag. The ribbons aren't sewn in, by the way, they just thread through grommets. Easily removed or put back as the mood strikes you. Or, you could add a second ribbon for four bookmarks. I suspect the upcoming Lochby Mini Journal will be another requisite for the properly provisioned voyage of discovery. You know, like going to the grocery store for milk. You never know when ancient vortices of timeless evil will reawaken. The most intrepid will always be lost in such circumstances absent a rugged journal and a well tuned pen.
The loop on the inside of the back cover actually lets you stow the clasp if you don’t need to cinch down the cover. I keep the clasp on this loop most of the time.
Love the Spaghetti Western music theme! I like the journal cover. It seems robust and manly. I require a more flowery appeal however ... say dusty rose or daffodil yellow... bluebell blue ... grasshopper green ... pansy purple ...
I've had their pen case for a couple of years now, and I love it. It's the perfect pen case. I've looked at this journal, and may try it in the future.
This is definitely something I could use. I do my share of outdoor Artwork and solo filmmaking/photography in rural Vermont. It's also available in black; that matches my vintage/antique camera aesthetic. Have a safe and interesting weekend, Mr. Jones 🥃🐧
Walmart's "Pen+Gear Personal Notebook, College Ruled, 30 Sheets, Brown" is $1 and the same size as the Lochby refills and I have found to be fountain pen friendly. I do have to say that a A5 TR dot pad is awful sexy.
@@simontemplar3359 TR paper is a "treat paper", correspondence and a swatching paper for me. Love your handle, Roger Moore's first The Saint season before it went all "secret agenty" was great, IMHO.
Wonderful review, HJ. It's definitely a cool journal. But I'm the type to set it down somewhere while traveling and forget about it. I will stick with my pocket-sized Apica notebook for now.
LOVE that it's "waxed canvass" vegan! I have a lighter (less-rugged) faux-leather /pro-humane traveler's type system with Tomoe River (newer type.) When mine wears out, I'll check Lochby. Love your detailed review. I came to say THANK YOU for your encouragement to write letters. 🖋📬 I sent an artsy hand-written one (FP + a marker) to my long-time friend for her BD and she went crazy... called to thank me for "such a treasure" and said she put it with her favorite memorabilia. It's so much easier to email but I love receiving a letter, especially an attractive one. 🎨Sunday I'm going to write a letter to my BFF, about to be Mom of the bride. I think that too will become a treasure. You are an inspiration, especially on using our pens. 🙏
Thanks so much for letting me know! I am so happy to read that I have inspired you to write letters! Yay! Way to go. You are creating treasures! Thanks for watching!
Hi Hemingway! Thanks for the heads up on this product. Unfortunately they are out of the blue ones, but hey, signed up to win a free one maybe! Not really a bad price on this cover as you get the excellent Tomoe River paper with it! Thanks again for sharing!
Fantastic review! I’m sold; this would be a great companion to my Quattro pen case! I already appreciate the quality and material in Lochby products so no doubts about the value here. I’m partial to that beeswax yellow, too! Lovely! I haven’t seen the journal in my area yet but I’ll be on the lookout.
It stays open quite well and has a bit of rigidity for writing comfortably. There is a bit of a lot going on if you add multiple inserts and whatnot. All the best and thanks for wathcing.
Sun 8/18/24 I’ve seen a few other reviews of this Lochby Field Journal, but you nailed it with this video. I would have gotten one, if it had been available 20 some years ago when I was commuting several hundred miles a week between family, my real job, and two hobby jobs. Now long since retired from all except family I have no need to get one. Thanks for the review and HEY check your IG again for the 2nd IM from me trying to connect so I can send the NOS P61 I wish to gift you.
Looks like a nice Hobonichi cover for a man. It is too bad the interior was not the same as the exterior, then it’s a junior general portfolio for military use…. Insert a grease pencil and laminated map and off on an adventure. Thanks for the review.
Nice. I’m using Tintris journal cover same as lochby but cheaper than that. And material, quality everything same. Comes with zipper and without zipper closure both models.
Probably the wrong question to ask but is there any black fountain pen ink that can be used on cheap, three-ring binder paper that'll still be black and not look dark gray when held/written on in the light? By cheap, three-ring binder paper, I mean the kind sold in Walmart. Every pen I have is equipped with a medium nib.
Jetpens recommends Platinum Carbon Black with warnings it can be difficult to clean out of a pen. They also recommend J. Herbin Perle Noire, which is said to be gentler on pens. I have a bottle of Diamine Jet Black. I haven't had it in a pen for a while now, but my recollection is it yielded a well defined line out of a fine nib, more so out of wider nibs. It probably worked well on modest paper. That's about all I get.
@@johnnyragadoo2414 No offense intended, but you're confusing Platinum Carbon Black - easy to flush out - with Platinum's Chou Kuro; that stuff has to be flushed out with distilled water because it forms tiny clots and threads because of the minerals in ordinary tap water. That's what I've seen and read online, anyway. I use Carbon Black; it's no problem to use. Best wishes from Vermont 🍁
@@TheStockwell That’s good to know. I was quoting Jetpens. From personal experience, I had good results with Diamine Jet Black. And certainly no offense taken. I appreciate your insight. Thank you!
@@HemingwayJones Neil DeGrasse Tyson showed some of his college lab books in an interview. He wrote them with a cheap pen and Hunt Extra Black ink. I don't think that's still in production. DeAtramentis Document Black seems well spoken of. I believe it's waterproof, so there might be cleaning issues. Ink is a melancholy topic this evening. I put another empty bottle away. That makes 80 ml of Cult Pens Michael (dark blue), 80 ml of Diamine Oxford Blue, and the latest casualty, 40 ml of Diamine Blue Velvet, all since I adopted the way of nibs and ink stains. Those brave decanters of ink gave all. I haven't yet published a novel. I feel I failed them.
My personal favorite: Pen Boutique Yak Leather A5 Zipped Folio - Crazy Horse-Tan Then I can easily add in my MUJI notebook (Kraft cover A5 20 holes) without being committed to using anyone's proprietary insert paper (Tomoe River). For me, I wasn't looking for something to replace my wallet, just hold pens and paper. Just my opinions.
The Tomoe River paper is very nice, but you can easily fit any a5 notebook in here. There's a ton of alternatives on the online book vendor who shall not be named and they come in packs of 6 for like 15 bucks. The fit perfectly and take fountain pen ink with no feathering or bleed through.
@@simontemplar3359 No doubt you can shove other paper into this solution but it feels hyper designed to accommodate Tomoriver. Also, if you are looking to replace your wallet and carry around a mini backpack this certainly feels like a great solution! 👍
