Off road mode with traction OFF. Another reviewer had the best results with those settings.

I've done offroad mode and traction off, it seems to work a bit better, not sure why. There's is another review out there where a tech from Mazda recommended it to the reviewer. The rack isn't as noisy as I thought, though coming from an '05 Rubicon with a softtop and no radio anything is quieter. Nice review.

It was painful to watch the CX-50 struggle where any solid 4WD vehicle (Full frame truck style w/ transfer case drivetrain) would've made it no problem. Great video, thanks for sharing!

I went with the CX-50 turbo premium model. Considered the Meridian, but I wasn't too wild about the hood graphics or that it lacked certain upgrades. As far as off-roading goes, I would guess fire roads and groomed trails/gravel roads would be best, not much beyond that because the CX-50 does not have any skid plates to protect vital components, as far as I can tell.

I also saw a video where the CX5 did better which my wife has. Aside from that better tires and approach angle would have changed things a lot. Thanks for the review.

99% of all compact suvs have failed this test. I actually think the cx 50 was far much better compared to all the others i have watched.

Mazda does have a setting that can turn on the notification if you are pushing both the accelerator and the brake at the same time. Thankfully it is an option and isn’t on automatically. Appreciate the video guys. I’ve seen several with different outcomes, most finishing with praise for what the vehicle is… Which isn’t really that off-road focussed as far as challenging obstacles go. I respect the video though for sure.

Thanks for checking out our video, we had high hopes for the cx50 as the cx5 surprised us. The reality is that our hill test has become more challenging and nearly all CUV’s struggle with the main and hybrid line. We are working on some modifications to balance it out. Stay tuned!

Go watch a Honda Nissan or Toyota do this same course. Mazda AWD is much better.

It looked weak and pathetic. Huge waste of money. Spend 5k on a older, proper 4x4 that will easily get the job done.

@@warriorhealth2172 why would you compare it to a real 4x4? This is a compact crossover. Go watch everything else in the class and you will see this performs far better. You also probably didn’t even make it to the point in the video where they used the offroad mode which significantly reduce wheel spin.

Ill stick with my jeep liberty. 37 approach, 34 departure, 22 departure, 9.4 ground clearance on 29 with a 16 in wheel and a two speed transfer case. When a car manufacturer going to learn that 18/22 inch wheels are the worst thing for offroading, you need that extra sidewall height. Plus a two speed transfer case is helpful in maintaining control in many trail situations, including less stresson the engine and yransmission.

I want one WITHOUT the stupid TURBO-- turbos are a crock- they wear the engines out sooner- cause the oil to need changing more and have to be watched closely for burning.. and I'm getting a SUPERCHARGER put on mine.. (they make one specificallly is for this particular engine)... and install a 1.5 inch lift kit too.. Supercharger is INFINITELY better-- no lag ever, much more boost and it's JUST AIR-- so you don't overheat the engine or oil- or chance getting hot enough to melt the plastic parts etc.. and the power comes in with correct ratio to the pedal movement.

This isn't true anymore unless you yourself are putting a turbo on an engine that was not engineered for the turbo. All engines that come with a turbo are meant for it, they don't just slap a turbo on the exact same engine as the one you find in the NA cx-50. Also, a supercharger will put as much wear and tear on your engine as a turbo does... so kind of ironic.

@@mikebracco890 ALREADY been done 3 times dude and it works GREAT.. it's a gentle boost over the full range of pedal- NOW a power blower like a race car... works super well.. NO heat issues- and the mpg stays within 1 gallone of projected... and no hard wear on the engine.

YES it is... true - the run LONGER without issues IF - I F taken care of properly- but most don't and issues are VERY expensive to fix. Supercharge doesn't HAVE those issues and if it quits working- take the belt off and run without it til you get it going and it works like NORMAL- not so with turbo.@@vindictiv6880

Outback Wilderness has a ground clearance of 9.5 inches and a standard front skid plate, regular Outback has 8.7, CX 50 Meridian is at 8.6. It’s actually just fine for most trail driving, probably just as good as a forester/Outback while having much better acceleration, a luxury interior and being fun to drive on paved roads. There aren’t many alternatives to it on the market in North America. Most people don’t need overland-capable vehicles.
