I have a 1973 450SL as well and love it. The only thing missing on the video unless I missed it was you driving it and taking us for a virtual tour. They are definitely a unique touring car.

Please go down that rabbit hole... I have subscribed! always thought i wanted an e30. After getting my 17 e300 i started to research more about Mercedes and fell in love with the r107.

THE posh car of the 70’s: Hart to Hart, Dallas just to name a few TV shows that featured this car. I got to ride in a rich friends step mom’s (trophy wife) 380SL as a kid. It felt truly special. No better door thunk sound than the R107.

I have an R129 with 50K miles that I love but the R107 was the car of my childhood dreams. I probably wouldn't be happy about losing the power top but I could certainly be tempted.

Great review of an iconic car! You should remove the combined chrome rust generators, rust covers around the wheel arches. They degrade the car's looks and is not Mercedes-Benz equipment. Then get the proper wider headrests installed plus a Becker radio🙂😉

Thanks for a great video. I own a 1988 560. Just one design detail I thought you would have mentioned. The ribs in the tail lights are designed to keep them clean in inclement weather. Oh and the timing chain issue on early cars.

I've read a few places that the in-out-in design of the taillights was so that dust might cake the stick-out bits, but was less likely to also get into the sucked-in bits ... thus, a safety feature.

Hello and thank you for the super informative videos. I have two questions I hope you can help me with, I have an 81 380 SL, I'm looking to change the wheels and the steering wheel to an older model. For the wheels I want to use the 14" steel wheels with hub caps as shown on your video car. For the steering wheel I want to use the older generation sl steering wheel with the chrome ring. Question is do you know if these changes will work on an 81 380 SL? before I go on the hunt for these wheels, hub caps and steering wheel. thank you and keep the videos coming!

Beautiful looking car. I remember when this generation Mercedes-Benz SL was on the market. Most were sold with automatic transmission, although I remember seeing one with a manual gearbox.

i think theres a lot of storage in it my r107 sl280 has these ´´backseats´´ you can take off then under them there's a huge storage space

Great video! I have a question: I own a 1985 380SL. You mention that the 5.6 liter V8 wasn’t installed until 1986 but mine has a V8 not the “lackluster” 3.8 liter in-line 6 you mention in the Video. Was there a mid-year change of which you are aware? Thanks in advance.

Wow great info I have a question.. I'm looking to buy a r107 and I am trying to buy one and a person has a 1972 with 78,000 miles the with the 4.5 V8 the person has owned the car only 2 years and does not know much about it he says it's a 450 SL it's tagged as 450 SL but your video says they didn't do that till 73 ? ... Would this be an issue and is the 72 model A good model year to purchase I really love the r107 body I can buy the car for 8K it's in good shape original paint and interior is in really good shape no rust that I noticed any info or to leave in the right direction would be great thanks

I would have to say the 380 or 500SL is best due to either fuel economy380 or 500 due to 245HP, which has more power than the 560

On a per year basis the r129 sold more. Also I am pretty sure those are Mex Tex seats not leather.

I think the R129 sold less cause the price was INSANE. Not insane for what it was, but the price point was a big barrier.

The ribs in the tail lights you should know are meant to keep the tail lights visible when they get dirty and they work very well

definetly money pit, also if you enjoy changing timing chains frequently then this is the car for u.

IMHO the 88 or 89 560 SL's are the ones to have. I had other older SL's and they had there minor problems that I didn't like. The last 450 SL 1980 had their special exhaust system and other 450 SL's won't fit. As you know the 380 SL had the single row timing chain problem, that wasn't fix until 84 and 85.

There is another Mercedes Benz not so popular like the R-107 iris the 450SLFC not so popular like the R-107,it has side lovers, more space than the R-107

The 380 replaced the 350 and the 500 replaced the 450 in 1980 in 1986 the 420 replaced the 380 and the 300 replaced the 280 the 500 continued along with 560 till 1989

I love to look at these.....but my shoulders just dont fit. The 450SLC is a better fit. :)
