Great video! I have had the CTX from the beginning, so I have 12 years of experience, and I also have the Nox 800. I still prefer the CTX. With your dime surrounded by nails test that the CTX couldn't hit on, my advice is to try Combined Ferrous-Coin. I can pick coins out that are surrounded by iron, including nails. I have had a nail laying on top of a silver quarter and picked it up with no problems. Combined Ferrous-Coin is a must for hunting coins in an iron infested area.
A coin buried between nails is going to be very directionally specific, so though the CTX is masked in one swing angle a different one can produce a hit. With the CTX set with large amounts of Disc the down-averaged hits will be muted. So likely there would be a response to alert the user of something worth exploring if less Disc was dialed in. Also, using Auto+3 instead of Man-25 makes a huge difference in depth. A US dime in Man-25 will hit 12" but in Auto+3 only 7.5". To get a similar depth in Manual as in Auto you'd have to reduce the sensitivity to Man-12 or less. Many people just use the Auto+3 as preset when depth performance could be improved by selecting a manual setting.
Going on 8 years with the CTX and love the machine. Hoping someday Minelab will come out with something over the top. A faster prossesor and better response on silver dollars. Also its weak in ultra dry soils but maybe all machines are. I run the Andy Sabisch program which is pretty much an open screen. Run two tone which non-ferrous is high tone and everything else low tone. After getting a high tone check the numbers and guess what it is.
Love it when the ball comes into the screen. God that reminds me of my dog so much!!! Oh just checking out metal detectors. Thinking about getting into the hobby> Can you recommend one for an old guy that has no clue about them? Enjoyed Rocky..
Thanks for watching. My recommendation is to go into the hobby cheap. Pick up the Minelab X-Terra Pro which is a super good machine for the price and its 100% waterproof. Reach out to my friends over at Fort Bedford Metal Detectors. Their contact info in the description of the video. Talk to John or Zack. They will get you squared away with great support.
I love mine ,found great finds and deep ,but you got to swing real slow to find them ,I have just ordered a Nox 800 as I have 5 blown dics and a fractured vertebrae so the nox will help me while I recover
So which machine do you prefer from all machines you have and your reasoning 😄 Ps. I use have your coin program and it’s usable in the Uk clay soil, I like the tones as sounds very different from any other program in the XPD2 🥳🥳
Excellent glad you are putting it to good use. Thats hard to answer because they all have a purpose in my tool box. My top 3 or 4 right now are Deus II, Equinox, GPX and CTX. The Legend is getting closer to the Equinox though. I enjoy the Deus because I understand that machine and I can use it in just about any condition especially heavy iron sites. The Equinox will still be a great coin and beach machine. I continue to use it but I'm using it less today because I've been learning the D2. The GPX is a pulse machine so thats a different category. The CTX goes deep sniffs out silver better than most and works well on the beach. Plus it has GEOTrace features than map where you've been and can build custom patterns etc. Its just a really interesting machine to use. But its heavy and target separation is slower. Once I get more time on the Legend it may overtake the Equinox just because its built better and with the latest update they may have made it better than the Equinox. But thats debatable to many. The verdict is still out on that for me. They all have their purpose and I use them all in different conditions. I plan on doing a video with all of them and going over all of this eventually.
@@MentalMetal Thank you for fast reply, as you say, all different and CTX is still a great machine for one that’s 10 years old but does suffer on the weight side. I liked my Etrack but not as fast on recovery speed and definitely would dig more junk , yes I like the D1 and D2 and the Nox is a great machine, I’m tempted by the Legend and the 60 tones sound nicer than current full tones on D2 and looks good with this latest update on iron site.

I have one and have no idea about setup, settings or how to properly use it. So far I've found a single silver dime and enough nails to build a house. I need help!
Great video. I am only half way through it. I have a few questions. If you answer later in the video sorry. What are you doing for sensitivity? What have you found as a good pattern and settings for the 3 ringers and other lead stuff.
Scott I don't use this machine to find 3 rings or hunt for relics. I have other machines that better suit me for those hunts but I typically hunt with the pattern wide open (pattern 2). Once you know the numbers and turn on target trace you have enough information in front of you to make the call. Plus it just opens the machine up with very little filtering. I think you get more depth that way.
I moved onto a large property that family from the 1800s used to homestead on. I have never even held a metal detector in my hands but I'm interested in purchasing one and looking around for artifacts on the land. I'm not looking for anything specific, just toying around. Can you suggest a decently priced or downright inexpensive detector for a novice user? Really would like to stay in the inexpensive category as much as possible. It would probably not turn into a hobby because I'm just too busy for an extra hobby, I just want to toy around a little bit but I don't want a "toy" metal detector. What model would be the best bang for the buck? Thanks a million!
Check out this article I wrote but specifically the section titled "Metal Detectors for Young Adults 16 years and older." These are all good detectors to start with that won't break the bank and will get out of the toy range. mentalmetaldetecting.com/metal-detectors-for-kids/
My springer loves to go in the back yard with me, but when I take my detector out the back door, he stays in. He knows that I will be playing with the detector, not him.
With proper settings that machine can and will pick up all the targets you have there. I can see on the screen you have it set with discrimination on. And I'm sure you don't have it set up for ferrous metals or high trash. I been using the ctx sense it first came out I own 2 and have yet to see a machine go toe to toe with it. . I don't use any of the factory settings. They are ok for the new guy but I would suggest you go ahead and have someone who knows this machine and set it for you to get the best performance out of it.
Sure you can fine tune the CTX and make it better just like you can the Manticore. I've been using the Manticore now since December and it will punch about 2 inches deeper than the CTX. The CTX struggles in the iron but so does the Manticore but the Manticore will separate better and processes faster. Can you tweak the CTX to hit those deep coins?, sure but you need to slow your swing speed down a lot. I think over time and if they fix some of the issues with the Manticore you will find that it will be a much preferred machine over the heavy CTX. But who knows what they are doing. We might even get a new CTX from them at some point. Thanks for sharing your thoughts I really appreciate it. I still enjoy using the CTX, it has never let me down.
How do you get the consistent tones over the target? My CTX sounds like a slot machine on meth!! I'm used to my GPZ7 over gold which gives a smooth consistent audio dependent on the target size, depth and ferrous content.
Do a noise cancel or try using ground balance. To me sounds like something isn't right. The CTX has one of the most accurate target IDs I've ever seen.
They make great performing machines but the quality build of the Nox was little bit to be desired with all the leaking issues they had. I suspect they will make sure the next machine to be pretty solid.
Very thrue. Its a high quality machine and it will not let you down easily.. also it has an extremely precise target id when set up right its like almost having to look at the numbers… its that precise. I used a lot of machines and i can honestly sayt that all tesoros are great , and almost every Minelab FBS BBS machines are great with the CTX being a tad above All
I would like to try one, isn’t it a heavy machine? That’s a deal breaker right there for me. I’m out for hours when I detect, I’d rather swing something that gets less depth that weighs 3 pounds or less. To each his own, if it works for you that’s awesome.
Thanks Troy it is a heavy machine coming in around 5.2 lbs. You can get a harness to use with it which will take most of the pressure of your back but check out the XP Deus 2, Minelab Equinox, or the Notka Makro Legend. The Deus is the lightest and probably the most complex and capable but the other 2 are right up there. They will all get you plenty of depth.
