Is The Most Popular Sharpening Stone On the Internet Any Good?

Today I test out the sharp pebble sharpening stone. It doesn't seem to matter where you look for knife sharpening supplies, you won't be able to miss the ads for this thing! They are forcing it upon you! So I decided to buy one (with my own money) and test it out. Is this a good beginner sharpening stone? Is it a good stone for any purpose? Will I truly SHARP them all?

in what way is the ceramic stone be better/worse than the diamond stone? would the ceramic stone last longer due to pieces of diamond falling off the diamond stone over time?
@OUTDOORS55
@OUTDOORS55 4 года назад
They both have slightly different feels and grits. Both will work well for a one stone system. The diamond will be slightly more aggressive but will not last near as long as the ceramic. The ceramic is less aggressive and is slightly finer grit. If I had to start over with one id get the diamond stone.

Late to the party, but a small suggestion: For someone that is new to freehand sharpening, I would suggest the extra fine 1200 instead of the fine 600 as their first whetstone. The extra fine 1200 will slow things down. "Aim small, miss small." Things may take a little longer, but your "oopes" will take longer to make, too, and be smaller 😉 The 1200 grit is a very good "working edge", refined with a touch of tooth", that you can go straight to honing afterwards 👍

I got one just like this for £15. It works great, I've sharpened 1095, d2, 30crv2 and some stainless blades. Although I use a diamond stone for reprofiling as it removes steel much faster. For general sharpening it is ideal, I tend to pull the blade rather than push so never accidentally bite into the stone.

Ok, that answers the question I posed in a comment on another of your videos. That's the same brand (but different grit) as what I have. I got a 400/1000 "Sharp Pebble" carborundum wet stone for $24 on Amazon in 2022. Came with rubber holder (no wood) and flattening stone. Works, but time-consuming and messy. I'm thinking of getting a Kuromaku K0207 (1000 grit). That's all I need for kitchen knives. I don't need to shave, much less split hairs, just cut meat & veggies.

How's the stones working out for you?
@thorvenalvarskjomisson95
@thorvenalvarskjomisson95 3 года назад
@@Nohkral Hey! They are working fine. At first, i had to learn how to use it. Dont get me wrong, all my knifes were sharp after the first try, but not like i wanted them to be. It is really important to hold it like you are supposed to do. I also used leather and a green compound in the end to polish it. I build that strap by myself, does also work fine. Now my knifes are, well, not like razorsharp, but they are extremely sharp and they hold their sharpness for like, 6 to 8 weeks, mostly i just strap them then. The stone itself did lose a lot of material, but that was kinda my fault, cuz i did hold it wrong and used to much pressure. I had at some point a hollow, but i grinded it even and now, sure, it still wears, but this thing will still stand a long time. Its important to clean it after using, soak it really good in the beginning and let it dry on the air. The stone itself, im satisified. My knifes, from cheap to expensive, are getting extremely sharp, like my bladesmith did it. But not razorsharp, but: i guess thats my fault, not the stones one. After all: i did never regret buying this and i would always recommend them. Its not expensive and it does a good job - but you have to learn it.

I can vouch for the look alike stone on Amazon (one of them at least). Works just fine. Comes with the same rubber base and useless angle guide. It will sharpen knives just fine. It is soft, but for as often as I sharpen my kitchen knives (every 2-3 months), that's just not an issue. This stone is a buy at the $20 I paid for it, but maybe not at $39. As always, sharpening your knives on a stone like this is still vastly superior to not sharpening them at all (which I shamefully did for far too long).

Thank you a lot, for everything really. Trough this Video, that I've got randomly in my timeline for no good reason, I found out there are other options then water stones, that may be even more beginner friendly. And then I've watched a ton of your Videos. Because when I first tried sharpening, maybe two years ago, it was with propably the exact stone, only cheaper and after X tries, all I've managed to do was to make my knife more dull and scratch it up. Well, now I've a got a two sided Diamond stone with 300/1200, a leather strop and some old, free beaten up knifes (boning knifes from a butchery; those are being sharpened until there is to much metal removed to use them) to practice and not scratch up some good knifes. Of course, I can't sharpen my knifes not nearly as good as you can, I'm a bloody beginner, but I've defenetly had success and got a completely dull knife to an useable state. And since it costs here around 20 Bucks to get my knifes sharpened, that upfront cost of the stone and strop will be paid off in a year. Plus I can keep my knife reasonably sharp at all time.

Great video. I own three of the cheap stones, 400/1000, 2000/6000 and 5000/10000. I can say they work flawlessly. They cut very fast which means you can use less pressure and they don't wear too quick even though they are softer. The grit rating is wrong on them though, and they contain little to no polishing agents. I'd estimate roughly half the rated grit. I ordered mine direct from china and paid only £7 (US$9) per stone. For that price these stones are very good value, but I also wouldn't recommend paying what you did for one.

I use the Mikarto 3000/8000 grit stone. I love it, I haven't bought another sharpener since.

I bought one of the cheap knockoffs you mentioned, used it for the first time today. It performed surprisingly well!

I’ve been using DMT stones since ‘99. About time for replacements as they don’t work as well now. I totally recommend DMT stones 😁

The only diamond stone I ever used is a tiny, cheap pocket model. I'm old school. I like the tactile feedback from a traditional stone. I like the Norton India stones and I have a Lansky puck I use on some tools.

Oh, and about 2 years ago I bought the $40 Carson Chase kit of Amazon. Primarily to sharpen wood chisels and being such an amateur at the time (still am! lol) at first it liked to drive me nuts rounding out stones. I practically used the flattening stone up within hours and had to switch to flattening on cinder blocks. So I can totally vouch for not being user friendly to sharpen several chisels. Anyways I think they’re the same stones as in this video, look remarkably similar. I still have the kit and pulled it out to mess with it, but have been eyeballing the diamond stones but trying to get over the hump to spend the cash on them.

Dude, i got a tip for you.. if you set the stone on a soft vaseline you'll get the full sealed stone for your entire life, just set it down for something like 10 hours, and dont forget that might be in a soft vaseline, or a warmed stuff vaseline.... Awesome video btw!!

Alex has some great tutorials on how to keep your blades at a 25 degree angle but if you’re still thinking that’s too hard, consider a Lansky fixed angle sharpening system. The diamond one is too expensive but if maintaining the proper dressing angle is the issue, this system takes all that fear out of sharpening your blades. Keep in mind that while it is a great system, there are a few flaws so check the reviews for any tips that may help if you plan on purchasing the Lansky system.
