The Explorer is one of the best selling Ford vehicles of all time. The ST-Line is a new trim for 2022. On the outside you will discover the 20in wheels, front fascia, and grill of the performance ST trim. On the inside you will be greeted by a sporty black leather interior, 8in infotainment screen and special steering wheel. Under the hood is a 2.3L turbocharged inline-4 that produces 300HP & is mated to a 10-speed automatic transmission. Is the NEW 2022 Ford Explorer ST-Line a better SUV to buy that a Palisade XRT?

I had one of these (XLT But same powertrain) for a little over two years and 300hp, especially if you put it into sport mode, was more than sufficient and fast for the size of the vehicle. Honestly it’s a large, top heavy vehicle. More power than that and the vehicle becomes uncontrollable.

I have one. I’ve driven a lot of new luxury cars and I agree, the fit and finish isn’t up to par. But sadly, 48k isn’t luxury car money these days. A Mercedes GLE is close to $60k with only marginally better interior quality. I have an ST-Line and can say that it gives you luxury driving feel and amenities. The $10k discount from a real luxury car only really makes you sacrifice a little bit of interior quality. As annoying as it is even at nearly $50k, $50k doesn’t get you what it used to. Lot of bang for the buck with the explorer though.

I might go with the Explorer back in 2020 when they newer generation came out wasn't fond of the looks now really like it a lot. I see a lot of these on the roads than before they are good looking also like interior so much grew on me with this SUV.

Great review! I recently leased a Ford ST line Explorer in white. I have to say I’m in love. Most of the features of the ST but better gas mileage! I have to say though I wish the badging was bigger and in more/different places. It’s definitely the best of both worlds. Sporty enough look and feel without having to fill the gas tank up every other day lol. And the price is up there but so are most comparable SUVs. It’s just the world we live in now.

In its own right, the ford is a good SUV and pretty fast too. But the palisade in my opinion is the winner because of a classier interior and more options (massaging seats, 2nd row heated seats etc) The ford interior looks a little bit cheap compared to the palisade and lacking on a few options too. Good review Joe.

This is a great car. Don't really know why Joe complains about this model being offered only with the 2.3L EcoBoost I-4 Engine which delivers 300 HP and 310 lb. -ft of torque. The Hyundai Palisade has a single engine offering: a 3.5-literV6 with 291 HP on all trim levels. I think at 300 HP the Ford Explorer is one, if not the most, powerful SUV on its class on this model and in the lower trim levels. We all know at higher trims, the Explorer is even more powerful offering other two more engines: a 3.0L EcoBoost twin-turbo V6 with 400 HP 415 lb.-ft. of torque, and a 3.3L hybrid V6 318 total net HP with 322 lb.-ft of torque. As far as I remember, I don't think there is another SUV more powerful on the mid size SUV class.

Very interesting take. I had a 2020 XLT, and was very disappointed in it. For one, I thought the interior trim was a huge miss. The large gaps and uneven surfaces you mentioned were not what I expected from Ford, or an Explorer. I'm also 6-foot-4, and was very uncomfortable in the car. I did not feel like there was enough room for me. All that being said, I had the same engine and transmission as in the one you tested, and mine was complete junk. Computer shifting was way too complicated, and the car took forever during acceleration to figure out what gear it wanted to be in. The entire vehicle just felt like Ford's interns had just phoned it in, half-@$$ed it, and knew that they'd move a bunch because it was an Explorer.

In the video Joe asked if we would spend the extra 10k for the "real St" with the v6. For me that depends on the deal. If the st line gets everything, including suspension tweaks etc, minus the engine, then maybe. A 600 tune would get the 2.3 close to the stock ST power numbers if i wanted to tinker (yes im aware of what a tune to a real ST would do). If the prices were closer then yes, straight to the ST.

Very nice. Joe, I'm considering picking up a 2023 Explorer ST-Line. I already have a 2020 Lincoln MKZ 400hp 3.0 in the garage but I'm needing an SUV. However, Joe I agree with you that Ford should have beefed up the horses in the Explorer ST-Line. Make it special and possibly a HUGE seller. Ford could have dropped the 2.7L Edge ST engine in the Explorer ST-Line. That would have given the Explorer ST-Line 335HP and 380lb-ft of torque. Man I tell you that would have given it just the right amount of punch. C'mon Ford get with the program!!! Would that have been so hard?? I mean many folks just can't shell out the bucks for a full Explorer ST trim so give them a little something. Especially during these times. C'mon Ford. You can do it baby!! Talk to them Joe. Knock some sense into them. Thanks for the walk-around. This will help with my decision making. 👍

I like it overall. A power bump would've been greatly appreciated. My biggest issue is the wheel choice. Instead of actually designing a new wheel for the ST Line (like they did with the Edge ST Line) they just slapped stock ST wheels on it. Probably cause they have too many laying around cause everyone ops for the brake and street package on their STs. But still, little more effort on Ford's part would've gone a long way

I don’t find the explorer to be attractive other than the ST and ST-Line. The ST-Line looks great, performs really well, and has all of the tech and comfort. I think Ford did great with it overall. That's not the base engine correct Joe? I mean, 300 hp isn't bad by any means, but a na six would make me happier
@Smhghejtn
@Smhghejtn Год назад
Fair point. The 10 speed makes it quick though. And the 2.3 is really efficient on the highway, even at high speeds. If I were keeping it to 300k miles I’d rather have a 6 but I’ll only keep mine to 150-200k so the 2.3 fits the bill perfectly.

An ST Line Explorer/Edge is to me like a C8 Corvette with the little GM 3.6 V6 and calling an Ette.
@Smhghejtn
@Smhghejtn Год назад
The ST line does 0-60 in 5.6 seconds. The ST does it in 5.2. The ST line will do 140MPH. It isn’t like they’re slow. With the 10 speed, 300hp is quick! The displacement sounds small, but don’t knock it until you try it. I have an ST Line and it’s more car than I thought I’d ever want.
@Smhghejtn
@Smhghejtn Год назад
Side note, I did take my ST line badges off. I don’t want to look like I’m trying to be an ST. The ST-Line just looks way better than the other trims and I’d rather have efficiency and really good power than unnecessary power with less efficiency so I went with it.
@CrazyPetez

@@CrazyPetez Fair enough. For me, 300hp and more options made more sense than more power and less options. Not saying that in a perfect world I wouldn’t rather have more power but I put interior options over the power this time.

In this price range for this size SUV, it’s basically explorer or telluride. The explorer sacrifices a little interior quality for a much better driving experience. The Telluride has a nicer interior but doesn’t drive quite as well. Tech and features are very similar. Just comes down to what you prioritize. I went with the explorer and i love it.

Ford should have put the St line badge on the grill and the back like they did on the fenders. I don't even see Ford Explorer St/ St line, I always see Ford Explorer XLT, premium, or Limited and some of those are AWD. Why would Ford make a Ford Explorer St line but have it as a rear-wheel Drive doesn't make sense at all

For the price, it’s really good. My only complaint is the silver plastic on the center console around the cup holders. Other than that, it’s solid and pretty in person. The explorer gets you luxury driving feel and luxury amenities for a lot less money than a luxury SUV of this size. You just have to sacrifice the niceness of some interior materials.

For the price, way too much, for a suv without a sunroof, a prop rod to hold up the hood, and the fit and finish, American brands don't keep up with thier counterpoint for the price, I did love the color on it though

$48k isn’t what it used to be. The explorer gets you most of the features and tech of a luxury car with almost all of the driving experience. It’s comfortable and quiet. You sacrifice a little on the interior pieces though.

ST owner here(2020 model)... POS over time, you should run away from it. Ford is making crap that looks good and runs well for the first year. My ST has been in and out of shop every 3 months, for all kinds of issues. Cheap plastics, computer issues, oil leaks, failed CV joints, exhaust leaks... the list goes on.
