Finally, a decent realistic review that doesn't blow smoke up the new car's back door! Mind you, I wonder what my '09 Defender would have been like if I could have spent the price difference, around $60k, on upgrades!! Seat and steering wheel moved and inch or two in from the drivers window would definitely have been on the list 🤣 ....waiting for my lotto numbers to come in.
Just add the Defender Dead Sheep Pack. £2476. Includes disposable gloves, sick bags, air freshener and anti maggot guard. Or just keep ya Defender pickup
Great video, no BS just a good test much appreciated. Had the chance to drive the new Defender today at Rockhampton Land Rover and I could not praise it enough. I currently drive a 110 Defender(same as in the video) and I love it but the new Defender although modern and full of electronics it still feels like a Defender. I have had 5 Defenders so I think I can say with some degree of experience that the new Defender has not lost its heritage just enhanced it for todays world.
This seems much more of a new Discovery and if they had called it that I would have been shouting support. Look at the age difference of these two vehicles, would you trust electronics of that age? I used to beat Discoveries in my old Series One across the tank ranges of Salisbury Plains because the electric sensors were always clogging up yet mechanical just keeps going. Yes, it is a great truck for the school run but can you change a wing yourself or a roof?
At the moment...I’m keeping my D4. This vehicle is a replacement for the D3/4...you have to understand / appreciate the TC operation. At this price not many will take them out in the bush to scratch.
Same, D3 owner here. Looking to buy a low mileage D4 in the future and maybe a defender after that. I’ll see how well they hold up after 250k miles and get a low mileage one if they prove ok long term
@@flight2k5 what I mean to say is that the old one has much higher potentials ! Just for a moment think if the old defender had all the necessary stuffs such as twin difflocks , a powerful torquey engine (maybe a cummins 4bt1 3.7l since tata has been using them in their medium duty forward control trucks) , coilovers, atleast 51:1 crawl ratio , then how better would it have been ! Keep the tyres stock as it was ! All because of the oldschool body on frame construction with solid axles , helping it flex ! That is why gwagens and 70 series are the best 4x4s by far! Sorry for my grammar tough because I am a south asian !
It only brakes wheels when they are without traction entirely, and even this can be changed to your own custom setting of the amount of wheels spin you want
The old defender crossed class lines. The new defender is a luxury SUV. Yes it’s good off road. But you’re not driving the thing. It’s driving you. And if the electronics fail, which they will bc it’s too complex, you’ll be out of luck.
Again not comparing stock to stock. The old Defender has extra lift suspension and lockers. Try a standard car and it would’ve not perfored anywhere near the one here. Plus you were obviously frightened of damaging the new one.
sure he was concerned like everyone that spends so much money for a useless piece of shit. If something happens outdoors or on a big trip, who can repair it or has the needed parts? The little garage in the outback or the bush body shop in Chile? Don’t think so...
Did you say the “bull” bar was over $4000.00?! Ive had landrovers and classic range rovers and i love your old defender. However i drive a landcruiser and, after looking at the new defender will continue to do so. It reminds me of an i phone with a wheel at each corner :(
@JoyDivision1976 yep. Ive got a 1979 fj45 witha genuine 110,000km one owner. I paid $1200 for a new arb 1970s style bar which would be better than whats on the front of that new defender
I think too much of the tech in the middle nowhere . Plus suspension travel is might be not a problem until you are putting RTT (or any heavy loads) on roof rack.
I believe you're absolutely correct and the Grenadier vehicle is proving that there is no reason why they had to do this to the defender. The new Defender is basically just a body with a Range Rover and a newer discovery underneath it
One is a work vehicle, one is a luxury AU$ 118,000 SUV reliant on computers. It is not a replacement of the old Defender it is a new model using an old name
Agree, the new one is a consumer appliance (looks like a washing machine under the bonnet/hood) the old Defender a rugged work tool that does the job more fluidly and also has longevity.
As an experienced 4wd would YOU ever actually use ATPC or Terrain response 2 when driving on similar tracks as in the video? Would the preset programmes not be sufficient?
You can't not use TR2. Its what comes with it now, its their 4x4 system name lol. ATPC I think takes more practice to use since it goes against what we are used to when off roading. And yes the preprogrammed modes make a massive difference in certain situations
Yeah right! How long does all its electronic gadgetry and air suspension last in real world conditions? Back to your off road observations, the new Defenders body is stiffer than the old but what it lacks are solid axles. So with a solid axle when one wheel slips, you get direct power transfer to the wheel that's gripping straight across the axle, with the new Defender, you have a body bouncing around, lifting the wheel off that's trying to grip. Also it's auto. Great in certain off road conditions but sometimes you need to dip a clutch and shock a transmission to get moving again 👍
@@maxt3458 It won't float until water gets well over the bonnet. Old defender started to float when water was about 4 inches from top of windscreen. I suppose it depends on weight and how much water has seeped into cab.
$5000 for a winch and $4500 for the bullbar?? This is highway robbery. There is no hint that the aftermarket will take on the Defender as, for example, there are no bull bars for Disco, RR or Disco sport that all share the same basic architecture. That factory “bull bar” will be useless against a roo strike. I hit one at 90kph in a Discovery with a factory bar and it wasn’t a great result. I replaced it with ARB and hit two more with no damage. You’re paying huge money for something that values form over function.
I think I'll keep my 1996 and 2010 Defender 110's thanks... I understand the need for electronics for engine management, etc to get the best for the environment but other than that I do not like all the electronics - too risky long term and who the hell would know how to fix it when something does happen to it??
@@tropicsalt. so far how reliable has been your defenders ? Which engine would prove to be more reliable ? Can you suggest me ? Because I am planning of buying a 110 wagon !
@@shankarwain4289 The 300tdi would be my choice for remote travel. The only electrics to worry about on the engine are the starter and stop solenoid, both can be bypassed to get you back to civilisation. 2.4 & 2.2 etc. have computers, sensors, electric accelerator etc. They are very good and great as every day driver. No major issues in about 25 years.
@@shankarwain4289 man I used a 4jb1-t isuzu turbo diesel engine, and man it is wonderful my dad used it in his 1983 series lll 109... and it’s extremely durable, you just have to take care of oil change, and in terms of efficiency fuel consumption is insanely low it’s around 5.0 L /100km... and now in terms of performance I’ll admit the series we have is on an R380 gearbox, and with the original differentials and lt32 transferbox but with this isuzu engine this old series lll runs up hill at 65mph, loaded with around 300kgs, so I can only tell you that isuzu engine our series lll is in is great, it’s my recommendation
Too small and too electronic for serous outback touring. Decent off-road but those who really want to do super technical off-roading will prefer something with live axles and less expensive. Other than image, I struggle to see the market for it.
Well let's face it. The old defender wasn't the greatest off road vehicle in the first place without being heavily modified. Standard (central diff lock) Defender off the dealers forecourt would struggle travelling down a grassy lane. Basically no defender owner hasn't had to modify it in some form to make it livable and once you start modifying it with better parts then its not piece of crap land rover sold in the first place.
This car is definitely an off road vehicle. It's on the lift all the time being repaired. Just check out TFL channel. I would not touch it unless you want to make Tata's executives happy.
Thanks. Good little review. So my 2013 Def110 is still worth $50k, but for an additional $70k I can get a new 2020 Def110 that is more comfy and faster on road. Or I could get a new Isuzu NPS 4x4 truck and turn it into the ultimate expedition tourer! Just thinkin?
The whole point that I have against these new 4x4 vehicles is that if you look at the defender if you look at the Jeep Wrangler and you look at the Ford bronco those were all bare Bones off-road vehicles that were capable. But they're trying to turn all of these vehicles into luxury vehicles I'm sorry electronic traction control will never replace mechanical. Durability is the biggest issue there a mechanical four wheel drive system is not going to leave you stranded when something shorts your CPU or wires get ripped off. These manufacturers need to stop and just create off-road vehicles and stop trying to make Urban four-wheel drive vehicles.
Where is all the fun when the CAR does the job for me? I think off-roading is still a hobby and should give me joy an excitement, the New Defender never will because I can’t make my hands dirty, because the car is doing it. About overland travels I’m not even talking with all the little helpers and what happens when they break down in the bush, 100 miles away from civilisation. The New Defender tried to step into big shoes and failed. It can’t carry the torch further and keep the legacy of the old Defender, it never was meant to do so. The New Defender was always meant to generate money for Tata, a new fashion stylish toy for mommies and adventurous hipster daddies that like to take the farm road on their way home from the office...
For $120,000 I'd prefer to get a old defender restored and moded....all the toys... no electronics and easy to repair in the feild.... not like that girls blouse shopping cart.
The myth of the noble Defender. The reality is that in the bush the Toyota LC is the vehicle to drive...it is supported. I have a 2008 Defender and it has taken us to every state and territory on the tarmac and off but when things go wrong you are pretty much on your own. The new Defender will be no different. (I'd buy one).
Everyone seems to bang on about how the new one is way more capable , electronic this that and everything else. Course it is but it’s sixty fucking grand, you’d expect it to be better wouldn’t you? ( plus extortionate priced extras natch) But....... you wouldn’t compare a race prepared bike with a touring bike for longevity. Or an adventure bike with a specialised trial bike. It’s easy for the new” pretender” to be great at everything but if you have a Landy you have it for a reason, and you’re in it for the long haul. You want to make it the vehicle you want it to be ,you want to have it simple and reliable and something you can own for years and years you DONT want a temperamental race bred thoroughbred that’ll kick you in the bollocks with another massive garage bill, you want a plodding cart horse that’s happy to get you there again and again and again. Everyone who says the new ones better has never got their hands dirty.
I think it was a cynical promotional device. If they'd marketed it as a new or HD Discovery it would have generated much less conversation. I suspect Land Rover have been run by a bunch of muppets for many years now, otherwise why would they keep changing owners all the time? And they never seemed to promote the real Defender or upgrade it's running gear and safety specs like Jeep have with the Wrangler.
I think if they kept the interior but took out all of the electronics except some basic stuff and dropped the price 30k then they would have had a real winner especially vs the landcruiser. It's just too expensive and too much like driving a computer.
Is good as long is new. We will see it in few years when electronics starts to fail and pneumatic also fail. This is not reliable car for going adventuring, God forbid one sensor fail or another electronics.
They have multiple modes for when sensors fail... I am a current Land Rover owner, and I won’t buy the new defender until someone else drives it to 200k miles and I can get reliability info
Altough Minor electronics such as traction controllers , electronically controlled difflocks , rear view camera , touchscreen display without vehicle controls make sense ! Just like the land cruiser 70! And yes ,I would rather choose the solid axled body on frame defender with the simple transfer case over the offender with air suspension , all independant suspension, monocoque and terrain response system ! Swap a cummins in the old one and there you go loads of torque!
Not true the Defender 200 is one wheel drive engage diff lock it becomes two drive he has added front and rear lockers to it to make it 4wd when the going gets tough. New Defender is a totally different 4wd system my like the Discovery 5, ie its an auto 4wd system to keep it simple
@@Ardventures A very misleading statement. The old Defender is in permanent 4wd in equal grip conditions. When one wheel has more traction the other wheel or wheels can spin. The problem with locked diffs is you cant turn very well and can damage the transmission with wind up if used in the wrong situation!
@@codprawn You are correct when all are on the ground with equal grip, but I am also correct that when one wheel goes off the ground all drive is lost, engage diff lock and you then have equal drive to front and rear, but if you cross axle again it will lose drive as power always goes to the wheel with least resistance open diffs. the demonstration was off road in this video, if he had driven his Defender standard with open diffs, IE 2WD the new Defender would have walked all over his old 110 . My comment far from misleading as this is off road video, its what teach for a living cheers
@@codprawn We are talking about his 200TDI Defender which did not have TC, the TC on the TDCI Defenders is very good, but still would not do as well as the new Defender. TC is reactive, lockers are proactive and the TC on the new Defender is generations on from the one on the old Defenders in fact its so good you struggle to see it working some times, We used a D5 this weekend on BFG KO2's and it went everywhere our D2 on KM3's with LSD went and with much less fuss
It's a good car ! But not a defender ! It is more of a discovery ! I can't just ellaborate how I love the new defender ,but I would never consider it is a defender ! The defender badge doesn't suit on that car ! But the discovery badge does ! Bring back the good old defender with solid axles but with updates such as 6 airbags , coilovers ,difflocks , traction control ! We need something utilitarian also !
Too gimmicky and complicated buttons for me. I preffer the pushing of a lever of the oldie. The new one relies too much on electronics for comfort. You will have a lot of worry if you take that thing in a remote offroad place
The new Defender has a rear locker (which is not 'standard' on base models). Lets see how the coil sprung new Defender will go without its airbags for clearance??
@@nnoddy8161 Hey, I also like the rugged "handsomeness" of the old Defender. However, the new Defender has various options you can choose when buying the vehicle from Land Rover which provides for great off-road capabilities - out the box. (provided all the electronics work of course!) You could not get an old Defender with diff locks originally (not talking about a CDL). And anyway, the new one does not really need a locker - it has traction control. Take a look at this video and enjoy the ride! Cheers. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-qF8SXafSOrQ.html
Have to Agree - any modern Land Rover with Traction Control will out preform an Old defender with no TC. D3/D4/RRS etc. Have seen it many times in the bush. Defender with Full Lockers is a true weapon. I have both so don't see the need to argue :) With all 4x4 you have to be willing to take them on the rough stuff to prove how good they are.
I think LRJ made a marketing blunder. This new Defender is too close to the Discovery and Range Rover products. Therefor it's succes will cut in the sales of these cars. My new Defender would have had a unibody and independent coil suspension. It would have the terrain management system, but it would not have the touch screen. Instead there would be 2 big rotary dials to select the terrain, lockers and down hill control, with the screen next to them. The underside of the body would have plastic cladding à la Citroën Catus so I don't get to nervous sliding against a tree or passing a narrow trail. I could also do with a less luxurious interior and less powerful engine. No cameras in the side mirrors on mine: these mirrors are going to be too expensive to replace when this tree sits in the way. Mine would have come with readily accessible tow hooks and steel protection around the edges of the body. As a bonus the price could be 15.000 € less.
it Is no one going to comment on the clown driver at @7:38 that pulled out in front of traffic like all are supposed to yelled to them? This is why we need self driving cars...1% of the population cause 80% of accidents (made up statistic, but sounds about right).
“It’s barely worth comparing” (with the old Defender)...So why do it? Compare it to a current competitor. Another 4wd that’s doing a similar job. Maybe a Prado Kakadu.
That plastic looking thing is not a defender, the real defender was British designed & built by a British company, that thing is a sell out! Londoners will probably love it!
This reboot reminds me of when Hummer brought out the H2.... Gerry McGovern should be sacked for what he’s done... the new Discovery, the Velar and now this “Defender” garbage....
