Microsoft is weird with their naming scheme. They released a Surface Pro 8, even though they had previously released a Surface Pro X Edit: The "X" is for the ARM chipset they used in that model.

I"m impressed that Jerry treated the technology with respect expecting him to just see 'when it breaks' it passed the bend test and highlighted the fact that it's repairable unlike the other many 'by design' competitors.
funnier fact: was the reason why i thought my surface was dead after i replaced the battery, because for some reason the cover wasnt registered by the surface so it didnt turn on
@@iciszwhy is it garbage? I'm curious because I want to buy something I can make notes and draw with for school, it seems nice. Do you recommend sth else?
@@aine_jajne I had a surface pro 4 way back when and one note was really nice to use when taking notes and drawing equations. Especially nice being digital so I can quickly write down stuff that would be wiped off the whiteboard at a moments notice cause I could just resize and make the notes tidy when the class was over. I would 100% recommend it.
My daughter uses a Pro 9 with a stylus for her art and it's utterly astonishing. Most beautiful screen I've seen outside of a Mac, and enough power to run an external 24" graphics tablet when she's at her desk. Running full blown Photoshop or *ANY* other Windows software feels like a cheat code.
I'll like to add that the Ipad Final Cut Pro isn't only just $50. Its $50 a year or $5 a month, DaVinci Resolve on the Ipad is watered down yes but at least it's a 1 time purchase. Apple didn't have to make Logic & Final Cut programs Subscription based but they did it anyways when by all accounts its the worst version... Fuck the Subscriptionification trend of all these large tech companies!
I worked in the MS Stores years ago and one of my colleagues went on to become the Project Manager in charge of making Surfaces repairable. He's helped them come a long way.
I use a Surface Pro 9 for work - it’s great in the field as a tablet running full windows software, being light and portable. In the go it’s a laptop with full keyboard and in the office plugged into a USB-C hub with 2 monitors and the other peripherals it’s a fully baked Pc.
This new X Elite Pro supports up to three external monitors + the display itself. quite impressive. And it sips battery, used a phone charger instead of the included charger and it worked fine.
I used mine as a full-blown work computer (administering web and database servers) and had no real issues aside from some toasty spots on the back. Might be time to get a new one
@@rowaystarco Yeah, I have a surface go from a long time ago. Never used the magsafe. Just charge it with a normal usb c charger. It has the same max charge speed on usb-c as the magsafe.
I remember when the surface pro screens used to shatter into millions of sharp glass bits when tampered with. But would you look at that! That came off pretty easily!

@@xredrum41x Ah yes, because that 1 year warranty (that many manufacturers will just ignore when anything actually goes wrong) is definitely good to cover all possible problems over the 4+ average years people keep a PC for. Not all of us are rich enough to just "buy a new one" when anything breaks. True repairability > warranty, every single time.
I don't care, I prefer the iPad because if the Microsoft Surface is lost or stolen, someone can reset it and use it. The iPad, being an Apple product, is much more secure and has powerful security features.
@@andrerhoden4633uh this reply is actually kinda irrelevant to the comment but yeah I kinda agree since some apps like find my device and other locking down mechanism can be triggered easily unlike Windows... because it's supposed to be a desktop OS before windows 8.... Until microsoft sank in the confusion of trying to mix desktop and touchscreen PCs...the thing is, they didn't even add the necessary mobile (as touchscreen devices commonly were) features into Windows. Everything they did was half baked IMO.
@@imaguyyesmale Complete irrelevant point. How often are you planning on having your tablet stolen? You're more likely to get into a car accident and have cancer at the same time than have your tablet randomly stolen. It's such a non issue that will not affect 99.9999% of users that even suggesting it as an advantage for Apple is ridiculous.
4:28 What sort of SSD is this? Is it more like a microSD card or is it actually an NVMe SSD? 6:55 Now that's an amazing idea - placing QR codes for the tutorials within the actual device. Kudos to Microsoft for making such an amazing device.
As DJ said it is a small form factor NVMe drive. Look up NVMe 2230. The great thing is that it is completely standard and they have become way cheaper and more common in recent years!
It's kinda sad that Microsoft makes some very cool products for productivity but they are either too expensive or never get the glory they should have, while Apple intentionally limits the potential of their devices and still get all admiration for it 🤷♂ (Yet, Apples devices are great!)
@@eternallyd3d i mean consumers just dont understand that teams in such big companies are mostly seperate, they group them all together. the hardware division is just genious, especially with the efforts of better repairability
The issue is that Microsoft created a lot of services and hardware but they never stick to their stuff. Zune, Groove, Nokia Lumia, Skype, MSN, Windows Phone, Windows RT, Band, Kinect, Kin, Windows Live.. All dead.
Microsoft products are just as well built but people associated their products to be more business oriented. Maybe they should have a lifestyle based products too.
If this was a full sized notebook, I'd want upgradable RAM too. But for what it is, kudos Microsoft. Changing a battery without the risk of bleeding out due to glass shards is great.
I guess you missed the part at the end where he gouged the bezel and the slightest amount more stress could have easily shattered the screen on this "easily repaired" tablet.
LPCAMM2 RAM is now available for the masses so it would be possible, but yeah it's still up to the vendor/OEM decision Maybe some model could have it while others still has fully soldered RAM

A computer is a versatile machine designed to execute instructions (programs) to perform various tasks, ranging from simple to highly complex operations. Windows or an OS does not define what a computer is. It defines what it functionally does.
1:57 "knock-off wanna-be Magsafe charging port" to be honest they had this connector for over 10 years now and with the surface Dock, the functionality is much better and compatible with every surface product since the surface pro 3. It's wanna-be Apple Magsafe because Apple changed it multiple times to make chargers incompatible, removed it, brought it back and it still its much more difficult for me to plug in the charging port of the new macbook pro.
Oops, you forgot to mention that Magsafe predates it by 6 years. The rest of your comment is just nonsense and you randomly admitting to not being able to plug in a simple cable. That sounds like a tough life.
Looking to possibly replace my iPad, this demo has almost convinced me to get a Surface. I tend to carry my laptop with me when I travel, and it's pretty heavy. I'd actually love to have that "computer in the form of a tablet." The non-bendability of it sweetens that deal. I'm also considering replacing my laptop this winter, but I do a lot of photo processing, so I'm still on the fence as to whether I can get away with having the Surface become my new laptop. Great vid, thanks for the effort you put into these!
It's a shame Apple is intentionally restricting the capabilities of the iPad. The hardware on some iPads is extremely powerful, but it's completely wasted cause of the limitations on iOS
I don't think Rossman will ever be happy. Don't get me wrong, he puts in really good work. He just strikes me as a guy who thinks it will never be enough
Will he be? Is he capable of being happy? I like the guy a lot, but he never seems pleased with anything because it's never enough for him. I get pushing for right to repair, but there comes a point when one should be able to say "This is a good step, and I like it" instead of "why aren't you Framework, and even then I still complain."
Am assuming that Jerry is going to do part 2 of this vid, man can't be satisfied with the fact that it survived his durability test. He's coming back to shred it apart again I think..😂😂
i'm genuinely impressed by the repairability of the surface. That's one direction i'm happy microsoft is going towards, and believe all big tech companies should shift towards as well
A bit of a head scratcher that they add the manuals with QR codes inside the tablet (which is amazing), and simultaneously putting documents in the OneDrive folder by default even when disabled 🙄
i'm convinced that these companies purposefully avoid innovating and or improving their glass hardness, so that we CONSUMERS can continue listening to zach say his most iconic phrase "Scratches at a Level 6 With Deeper Grooves at a Level 7"
5:19 "the Microsoft Surface Pro 11th Generation is nearly immovable" "I credit the super thick kickstand and the Brontosauraus, but mostly the kickstand" AHAHAHA
I've got the 11 Pro right in front of me. Microsoft literally fixed all the issue the Surface lineup had till today. The Snapdragon is extremely fast while being super efficient. No more ludicrous standby drain, a battery life better than basically any laptop out there and finally an Windows on ARM OS which is running everything fine, including emulated x86 apps. Not only that, but major companies like Adobe or Blackmagic natively now also offer their productivity-suite for ARM on Windows. Completely crazy, this wasn't even thought to be possible some years ago.
Yeah, I love it. But I'm somewhat disappointed that Microsoft left us with a cloud only version of the Xbox app. Even steam will let you install a bunch of X86 games. If Microsoft is serious about ARM, they should have Xbox compile some of their lighter first party games to run on ARM as well.
@@rowaystarco Yeah that's true. Although this likely will change over time. Currently they can't emulate AVX2 due to license stuff. And the licensing for AVX2 runs out this year or early next year afaik. The Games published on Microsoft Store highly likely need AVX2, so theres no way to run them anyways.
@@safetinspector2 There are some very rare circumstances which definitely won't work with the emulation layer right now. One is custom network adapters. For example VPN services typically offer their own client, they won't work as x86 apps as the emulation layer can't translate an x86 network adapter. However you can just use the native wireguard client instead. The second thing is AVX2 emulation. That simply isn't possible right now. Any app which requires that won't run. This is a pretty niche thing as I'm not aware of any program which require AVX2 instructions except modern video games. All the others just fall back to AVX. Everything else is literally working out of the box, you don't notice the emulation at all. In the end emulating x86 with the current Windows build is as fast on the X Elite as running the apps natively on the last Intel Ultra 7 chip. Although it uses a bit more power emulated. However more impressive is the current availability of native ARM apps. It's ludicrous, basically all major productivity tools you use are available on ARM. Have a look at "armrepo" on Github pages to see a list.
@@univera1111 I have the dev kit for this cpu platform, there's no way it'd survive as a phone sized device. It's way too power hungry in its current iteration. The snapdragon x elite has a package power of up to 80 watts. At full tilt, it would drain the largest cellphone battery commonly on the market in less than 15 minutes. Not that it's thermals could survive that in that package size.
@@oh-noe I mean the surface pro lineup wasn’t meant to be just a tablet, more of a tablet pc, and that’s why older models came with an attachable keyboard. @@univera1111 Ooh, *Android* emulation, you say? So I can run all... 12? Android apps built for tablets? My Tab S7+ would like to know what you're referencing. *Surely* you don't mean running phone apps 16:9/9:16 or some 18.5:9 nonsense aspect ratio?
I recently got an iPad m2, don’t regret it, its primary purpose is to make art. Saying that though in the future when it begins to die I can see myself buying some kind of surface for the repairability, storage upgrades and having a more full featured OS.
Lol, y'all need to chill. Zackp1331 appears to like whisper quiet devices. That quality is important to some people. If you don't mind a low hum, that's fine too. All that comes down to preference.
Wow, the triggered knee-jerk reactions to your comment that completely miss the point. The sound referenced is the one when Zack holds the screwdriver to the fan to slow it down. Now, everyone take a quick break and calm down. But yes, I'm a huge proponent of fans that offer +5% performance with the added moving parts, dust concerns, and wear items. Putting a fan in is just soooooooooooooo much better than Apple's, *checks notes* FORTY FIVE PERCENT FASTER ON AVERAGE processor because said processor throttles (REEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE) down to just 30% faster.
Btw, Magsafe only charges. The surface connect port is a docking port, so you can connect an entire dock to it of multiple displays, usb, ethernet, aux, etc.

It is like a portable Xbox, so I recommend it for that too.
A great change they made a few generations back. The big plus now is that 2230 drives have become way more available with Steam Deck, Rog Ally and so on using it as well.
2 fun facts! 1: under the “what’s in the box” section on Microsoft’s page they say “Surface Pro (11th Edition)” 2: while I agree that this is a whole computer and not a tablet. It is also an Arm based OS, which does have some app based limitations that an x64 based OS wouldn’t have…
Fun fact: ever since the Surface Pro 8, the Surface Pros have been able to connect externally to a full-sized GPU with a TB4 to PCIE adapter :) I have mine plugged into an RTX 4070 TS for scientific computing and rendering projects.
u can charge it with the usbc ports, but the proprietary port that they have used for mb like 10 years now is honestly really good, idk why he was trying to make it look difficult to plug in because the magnets do plug itself in when u hold it even close to the port.
Microsoft surface devices have always been known to be durable and repairable. They have always provided parts since the original. The memory slot is a great addition tho. /Would also be nice to see Android run on this thing since it is ARM and Google likely had the drivers for the chipset.
They started making their devices repairable a few generations ago. The major lift this time around is the ARM cpu that gives it actual battery endurance, oh and an OLED on some of the models. They have really started making these devices ready for EU repair laws. Great job by Microsoft!

I'm truly and happily surprised by the repairability of the new Surface! The only real issue with my old Surface Pro 4 is that I _can't_ get into it to change the battery and clean out the dust from the fan, and so there's only very limited uses I still have for it. Am glad to see newer Surface Pros will be better able to be maintained and should stay out of ewaste for even longer 😄
I gotta say, the Microsoft Surface is a great computer. My last one lasted 8 years and it still runs great. My brother's also lasted that long. MS actually did good on this line of laptops.
I love when you tear down repairable stuff, even though it's rare. I haven't been thinking about getting a tablet, but this one is making me reconsider
An amazing machine. It harkens back to the days when all laptops were fully repairable. Seriously, this thing looks like it would be at home at Starfleet if Starfleet was an actual thing.
i would LOVE to see a windows/surface phone like this. repairable, multiple usb-c ports, full fledged windows without any dumb phone/tablet OS restrictions. maybe i'm just dreaming, but i'd love to see that
If anyone was discouraged by that charging port looking funky, I wasn't exactly happy with it either but once you get used to it, you can manage to plug it in from like 5cm away with no struggle, it's just a case of getting used to the design.
It's easy to put a whole computer in much smaller than that, There are a bunch of android phones with the snapdragon 855 processor that can run windows 11 for arm, just like this tablet. I've done it myself, it's good stuff. And you'd be surprised how responsive it it
