The pyramid in Tirana, once a monument to Enver Hoxha, the former communist dictator of Albania, now has new purpose as a technology center paving a way to the future. But is it erasing the past or integrating it into the future?

Albanian guy complains Hoxha's tyranny is being erased. Architect comes out with usual vacuous arty bs about steps representing the 'conquering of communism' and points to a bit of rough painted wall.
@serebii666
@serebii666 5 месяцев назад
"vacuous arty bs" That's not what he was talking about at all. He pointed to the specific border between the original structure and his adaptive-reuse addition. He was literally pointing out the layers of the history of the building, which was the point of the project - taking the old and converting it into a new use.
@proselytizingorthodoxpente8304
@proselytizingorthodoxpente8304 5 месяцев назад
@@serebii666 You can stand two people in front of any piece of art, and get two different interpretations. So whatever concept he has in his head will likely not be shared by the majority.
@serebii666
@serebii666 5 месяцев назад
@@proselytizingorthodoxpente8304 Again, you're going on a tangent on the subjective interpretation of signs. The architect was not polemizing the building's relation to communist ideology, nor overcoming it etc. You are inserting that into this discussion, not him. He was literally pointing to the objective material reality of the building and describing what those elements physically are. To use your "piece of art" comparison - it is the artist describing what pigments were used where, not the meaning of the choice of the pigments.
@proselytizingorthodoxpente8304
@proselytizingorthodoxpente8304 5 месяцев назад
@@serebii666 It's all about interpretation. If it wasn't, he wouldn't have bothered to interpret steps as representing the conquering of communism in Albania. He may well have decided that the building needed steps in order to represent that, and that the need for steps as a method of getting to the top to enjoy the view was of secondary importance to that representation (although I doubt it. More like the steps came first, and the idea of what they represent came second), but it is unlikely that is how the majority will interpret it.

It is unfortunate that the past in Albania is systemically being glossed over or packaged in tourist-friendly feel-good anecdotes, see the pyramid here or the couple of bunker museums, which mainly portray objects taken out of context or that remain episodic. A real engagement with the era of socialism and its consequences in the social, political and economical life doesn't exist: a real danger as the present government is not far from repeating similar undemocratic patterns and the opposing voice are either dissolved through inner squabbles (the opposition) or forced into silence (civic initiatives). West pop-journalism isn't exactly interested in a deeper delving of this complex issues either, but prefers rather to stay on the surface of things and the surface surely is shiny and pretty.

I don’t see the renovation of the Pyramid as an erasure of the past. The material and spoken heritage of Communism is presently visible all over the country. Countless documentaries, reports, testimonies add to that too. The National Museum of Albania which will soon start renovation will have an entire pavilion on the atrocities of the regime. Nobody will ever forget the original purpose of the Pyramid or that it was the ugliest building in Tirana for about 30 years. The Albanian government in early 2010s even wanted to demolish it. What we need to do is deal properly with the crimes of Communism by opening the old files and coming to terms with it. The Pyramid is fine.

Seems like they could have prominent historical displays inside the main lobby which explain to anyone entering about the old building and its function within the dictatorships. These could be reinforced posterboard on metal stands. Remembering history doesn't have to be expensive or get in the way of all the education that is going on about tech in the rest of the rooms.

" just as bad as wasting money building it." So not a waste at all? Human culture, civilization and history is defined by the monuments, physical and immaterial that each generation and people build. The human spirit is literally one that seeks immortality by any means, and monuments are chief expressions of that desire.

@serebii666
@serebii666 5 месяцев назад
@@guisampaio2008 nobody is stealing anything - monuments were and are funded from private initiatives, taxes, and city beautification ordinances and in democracies today are consulted with their community stakeholders. And you were talking about monuments in general - otherwise stop taking this building as a generalization of all monuments every made in all of history. It is a strawman and fallacious argument. The fact of the matter is for this specific case study - the building was built, it exists. To not use it is a far greater waste than to adapt it for use by contemporary society, let alone spend even more resources just tearing it down. You lack a coherent point here and it is really obvious.
@guisampaio2008

Forgetting that Tumo is an Armenia based organization named after Tumanyan park in Yerevan. Even this cultural soft power in Tirana didnt change anything when Albania made the worst statement during a UN resolution hearing about the 10 month humanitarian blockade in Artsakh right before Azerbaijan attacked and cleansed 100K Armenians from their homeland. A sad complicity.

It is not about recognizing Artsakh but about lifting and blockade of food, medicine and gas for 100k people for 9 months that led to their cleansing. It’s an issue of morality.
