uncertain about PA market, but yes, NP market is definitely saturated in most middle to large cities. Definitely job openings in smaller/rural areas though.

There actually isn’t a physician shortage, it’s a placement shortage. Similar to NPs and PA’s, most doctors want to work in or around cities.
@chrisnguyen5922

I'm not sure... A lot of articles (whether credible or not) show shortages of physicians and nurses. I think medical schools, in particular, have TENS of THOUSANDS of applicants, but only a couple HUNDRED or so seats. So it's very competitive, and i think that they wanna keep it that way because of high demand and low supply, so doctors have more prestige and expenses to their services. There are other reasons, too, like limited residency/fellowship places, higher costs to train doctors (esp in certain specialties), and limited funding for all that. It's very logical for healthcare workers to work in cities b/c of a steady amount of patients -> that translates to stable revenue. Let's say there is a rural opportunity -> how can you thrive in a small town to recoup your student loans/debt from medical school? So anyways, I personally think cities are ideal for medical/healthcare workers due to population density, career opportunities for mentors & referrals nearby, opportunities for family (like spouses or kids) to have other jobs, and just the network/connections with other services.

This is issue is the vast majority of NPs and PAs dont work in small towns as it is, they have had this as their mission statements yet they dont work in them and the health care deserts continue despite and increase in NP numbers. Most are working in cities in hospital systems

NP jobs in Tennessee are so scarce and it has worsened in the past 5 years since I graduated.

New grad PMHNP here, I had no trouble finding a job in AZ, however, I know the influx of RNs deciding to go into psych and attend PMHNP is increasing. I did my DNP at the University of Arizona and I'm hearing the PMHNP speciality ranks 2nd among all 5 in the number of applicants. I get emails all the time about students looking for preceptors. So while the jobs are plentiful at this particular moment, I do think the job market is becoming saturated. I've also noticed salaries decline by 10-20K since I enrolled in the DNP program, because there are more NPs in the specialty now. My advice is don't pursue psych because you heard you'll always have options for good paying jobs, pursue psych because you're passionate about it and it's what you want to do. The jobs might be harder to come by in the near future. Just my humble opinion.

I agree. The market has swung a bit sine I made this. So many bedside friends want to get out. I hate it because people may be pursing for the wrong reasons, but I don’t want to dissuade someone who has drive and passion.

Yes there is a shortage of primary care providers but no one wants to hire new nps. I'm board certified and have all the qualifications they're asking for but employers hammer u with experience and Spanish required. Its very frustrating and mentally challenging.

@@chalinillo12.75 Well, compared to learning Chinese or Arabic, sure! Spanish is more easy to learn from an English standpoint. However, if you're bilingual and have a ton of information in your head as you get older, then it's super challenging to be good at. (Brain density is a thing -> like you can only fit so much information before it's perishable and you forget it if u don't use it frequently).

For me it was definitely saturated in Atlanta but not at all in NYC. Had no interviews in GA after >60 apps. Have been in NYC for 3mo's and have had 8 interviews so far from about 40 apps. Btw, I'm an Adult NP.

There are bedside RNs that make way more money than FNPs all across this country. Schools don't tell you that about salary. Also, this is an indicator of saturation in the market. I also agree with the territory issue within the nursing community. NPs in my area just won't help other NPs get a job. I disagree about the school. No one in my 12+ years has anyone cared about my school. I agree about choosing one with a great clinical program but as far as employers knowing the schools I totally disagree.
@BreeJuskowiak
@BreeJuskowiak 3 года назад
Covid has changed so many things - staffing shortages and bedside pay is better than what I make right now too. Historically though for ACNP and critical care it is better paying than RN. Are you FNP? I ask because in my area for ACNP school is number one decision maker for the new grad. The only caveat is someone who was a student with us and we are aware of their skill set. Otherwise the market is way too tight - if 10 people apply and we don’t know them school is the major deciding factor.

This is actually great advice! I just accepted an ICU APP position here in GA so I know exactly what facility you’re referring too and what schools. I also got 4 offers solely off my resume and clinical so that was spot on. They actually saved a position for me so it’s soooooo important!!!

As many ppl as this country has it is impossible to be a shortage. People in healthcare are burned out due to doing the work of multiple people, there is a shortage of those Willing to give opportunities.

Just like nursing or any health-related scenarios, you have to move forward, not dwell on the negative, and look at the bigger picture. You may not find an opportunity in a population-dense location due to competition. But that doesn't mean the job search is grim. If city to city doesn't work, then look state to state (i.e, Alaska, Kansas, etc lol). Or try Canada (idk). Whatever the case is, you can still fill in the gaps of the nursing shortage as a travel nurse (temporarily) and negotiate for a higher pay due to experience / level of education :D

With no prior nursing experience you mean? I think it’s a bad idea. It was never great but now that the market is so tough you will have major problems finding a job. Sorry, I strongly feel you need bedside experience. The long route is the wiser choice.

Thanks for the nice discussion. Recently watched another RU-vidr NP who is leaving his NP role to pursue CRNA school, with concerns over job security and pay. Do you think that in 5-10 years salary and job security outside of rural healthcare will be a concern?
@BreeJuskowiak
@BreeJuskowiak 3 года назад
Hi Brendon. I think it boils down to what specialty you want to pursue. Since the filming of this video I’m already seeing saturation on my world of critical care. So if that’s your focus it is a high concern. I also am hearing people say their salary is not equivalent to ROI for education. This seems to be concerning for bedside folks who are high earning. I still think it all boils down to job fulfillment and short term vs long term goals. Highly personalized decision.
@stevenanzaldua3415

Some people despite the saturation. Like myself i hope when i graduate np school i will have a high payong job however i will alsp be happy just having a job. there are people like me that simply want to be in a different role than a bedside nurse and have a passion for a different role and saturation or npt low pay or not that will not deter me from pursing that. Being a bedside nurse is dofficult to do for many years it is harder on the physical body where being a provider would me more mentally provider. there are very few instances i have worked with any provider that helps to lift heavy patients to assist in cleaning the patients and long term that is taxing on the body. To sum up what im saying money is not the only driver as go why someone will become an np if that is the only incentive that might be the wrong incentative. but it can be a combination of factors that makes so.eone want to pursue that like i said for me its i want a change in role and even if i made the same i would be satified because im no longer carrying out the order rather i a m working with a doctor to write the orders.

Does job outlook change based on whether you get an MSN or a DNP?
@BreeJuskowiak
@BreeJuskowiak 4 года назад
No. The only thing DNP gets you is the ability to teach or lecture at a higher price. You can still lecture at MSN level just for a little less reimbursement.
