The Give-a-caster raffle is still open until today 12pm CET. 😉 I will pick the winner tomorrow and announce it as soon as the person contacted me and is confirmed. Cheers!
@@manuelignaciomiranda5327 Exactly, until midnight (24:00). Actually we don’t use am pm here, I only used it to avoid confusion. I obviously failed. Haha
Thé ODR-1 had the best tone of all three pedals. I own a few of those original ones, and they are my go to overdrive 90% of the time. Just an amazing pedal. Despite what the original designer said, the original pedal does NOT sound the same as the reissues made in China. The circuit might be the same, but they do sound different.
The ODR-1 sounded great, I thought the Foxcatcher sounded a little fuller. I think they all have their place. Nothing wrong with having more than one overdrive pedal in your chain 😁
Another great review Kris! Personally i loved the ODR-1 in lead tones as it has that chewy mids, but i believe not so great at rythm vs the other two. A great pedal to have for it's unique character.
What settings for the internal presence control is on the king of tone, sounds very trebly and brittle you may need to turn the presence pots down internally in the kot
Thanks for a good show (as always). I’d like to see an comparison between the old, new and mini ODR-1. That would be really interesting. Are they different or is it just mojo?
Uncle Larry did a comparison of original vs. newer ODR-1. It was amazing to hear the difference even w an iPhone. I really don't understand this, because at the same time I believe Josh's claim that circuits can be exactly duplicated (and their xfer functions compared). Not sure yet how to put this all together.
Dang! That Nobles sounds incredible. That Foxcatcher is sweet as well. But to be honest Kris, you could plug into a cheap Behringer pedal and you’d make it sound killer! Especially with that sweet Tele! Cheers!
Thanks man, but I'm not so sure about that. haha! Maybe I should recreate my rig with a full-on budget setup just to see what's what... :) What do you say?
Hey Kris, I have a MKii styled fuzz however, I combine it with a TS style overdrive , I think it thickens up maybe a bit too much. Can you recommend an OD which pairs well with Bender styled Fuzzes.
Hey man, I think you’d like a bit more transparent drive after the fuzz. I always end up having the Kasleder Toxic Twins (left side is based on a Blues Breaker) or a klon style pedal (Warm Centavo, J.Rockett Archer, etc) after my fuzzes. Hope that helps dude.
I scored one of the Korean made ODR-1 a few years ago, used but in mint condition. I paid about $80 USD for it. A buddy of mine has the newer (Chinese?) one. We A/B’d the two pedals and there is a definite difference. I won’t say that one is better than the other, just different. Better would be a subjective thing and that’s true of most overdrives.
I also got to compare this old ODR-1 with a current one and they were very similar indeed. There was something about the clarity of this Korean one though, something that made me wanna play this one instead. Even though the actual tonal difference was, as told, pretty small. Interesting, isn’t it? Btw 80$ for the old Nobels is a killer deal man, congrats!
@@KrisBarocsi This is the rub with these old analog pedals. If I had a time-traveling DeLorean and traveled back 20 maybe 25 years, I could do to a Nobel dealer and demo two of the ODR-1 pedals side by side. I can guarantee that there would be a slight, but still perceptible difference in the tonal quality between the two otherwise identical pedals...because component tolerances. That’s why I stopped being as dogmatic about this version is superior to that one over there. There are differences, but whether or not one is better than the other is subjective once the decision is made whether I like or do not like a given make and model of pedal, e.g. the Nobels ODR-1, the Ibanez FL-9 Flanger, the Ibanez TS-808, etc. Different 🚫 Better.
The original designer of the ODR-1 now has a little company, Nordland Electronics, and made an improved version: ODR-C, hand-assembled, made in Germany. Additional control, all high quality brand components.
The ODR-1 is great if you want flat or scooped overdrive, but I sure wish they'd added a bass cut knob on these new ones, like Wampler did on his Belle, because the ODR is still too bass-heavy for my rig. I turn down the spectrum to cut bass and it cuts out my highs, too. It's this awkward balancing act of finding the eq you like with the spectrum knob and adjust the volume to control the bass. I play in to clean amps mostly. This isn't as much a problem in to dirty amps that are compressing the frequencies more.
The battery access on the front is really clever. I liked the Foxcatcher better, think it would sound killer for funk rhythms. Keep playin dat bass! 😎👍 (for real fun on bass try an envelope filter, always hit on the one, use Dorian mode ..oh yeah! funk time! stank face! 🤪 )
First of all great video! I really like how the Nobels sounds with the Tely! And to be honest the FoxCatcher really sounds like more "modern",while the Nobels sounds really really cool and old. Cheers from germany!
@@KrisBarocsi recently I acquired a 55 gibsonette g 8 amplifier it is one channel amp the cleanest sounding amp I've ever heard clean as any fender I've heard. I would love to have a K.O.T. pedal I love the tone but I like a grunge tone to I do like a heavy tone at times..any I'm in love with this classic amp just need something to liven it up. Any suggestions would be great thank you...
@@jameswilson3554 wow, I’m sure that’s an awesome amp. I think you’ll love the Wampler Pantheon (really close to the KoT) and try a Boss SD-1 in front of it. You can use them stacked or one at a time for tons of different killer overdriven sounds (up to high gain when played together). Enjoy the amp James!
So about 6 years ago i walked into a shop and saw a nobels odr1 i didnt really know what it was but i thought it looked cool so i asked the guy how much he said $50 so i bought it, i thought it was ok, but never really got along with it, was doing some more research and it was an original from the 90s and it was mint, fast forward about 2 years it was going for about $200 to $300 so i sold it in a trade😞now they're going for about$2000 wow, but now have a silver nobels dt1 distortion and love it it sounds like the vintage odr1 but has a little more gain on tap!!!
Hp has a signature ( I just received) Andy has Ferris blue when will The big T give you a signature axe and what would it look like explorer Lp tele strat or something like an Abasi ???
@@PooNinja Hmm... I don't think I could decide on one single model. Unless it's a tele, that's a les paul and a strat and an ES and an explorer IN ONE. Uhh imagine that... duuuuude :D
@@KrisBarocsi I think Boaz may be making that exact thing as we speak 😂 check the boaz one . I’m always looking for instruments that can withstand the rigors of 0 atmosphere Extreme altitude changes and wild humidity Swings and little to no gravity 🤘🏽
Did you know that Kai Tachibana, the creator of the ODR-1, is currently producing a boutique version of it? The ODR C. It is basically the same but with premium components, hand made, and a couple of other knobs to tweak the sound, for instance the level of compression. Check out Nordland Electronics.
Pretty close to be honest. I preferred this one but that might have just been the slightly different values of capacitors, pots and such. Nobels says the old and the new ODR-1 are identical. 🤷♂️
Totally dig the ODR-1 sound, the other 2 are great and maybe more versatiles, but the Nobels do that thing and does it soo well, virtual hughs Kris, stay safe!
Haha! Just wait a few hours and check out the Thomann's guitars and basses channel. ;) We're all about trying out and comparing things and we're not afraid of consequences. Haha! That video will offer even more than just that. Stay tuned. :)
Hey, it’s maybe because the Foxcatcher doesn’t have a lot of mids. It definitely has more sparkle on top and a flatter eq than the other two, especially when all knobs point at 12 o‘clock. I’m just guessing. :)
@@KrisBarocsi yep, that is typicaly combination I dont gravitate towards. I like mid heavy sound and if there is lot top end sparkle and mid scoop, its outside my taste.
Well, the Foxcatcher is a hand built US pedal made out of selected components. Same for the King of Tone (which btw costs exactly as much as the Foxcatcher if you buy it new from Analog Man). The current Nobels is made in China (or similar, somwhere in Asia) and it’s mass produced. Hype has nothing to do with the prices. Production costs do. Please don’t forget that this is an old Nobels in the video, which will cost you more than the other two. 🤷♂️
@@adamsmith2769 I know about the 3 years… now that’s the hype part of this story. Haha! You asked about the blind test. If I was listening to someone playing the pedals, probably not. If I was playing the pedals myself blindfolded, 100% yes. 👍 It reacts to my playing in a way no other pedal does. It’s not the best pedal in the world probably. There’s no such thing. But it does exactly what I want from an overdrive and I never thought I‘ll find a pedal that does it all (for me at least). Cheers!
Haha! Good call getting a TS. Those sound totally different and you use them for different things. I think everyone should have a tube screamer sooner or later. :)
This is the only demo that made this pedal sound good. It works for a Tele on low gain. I guess that explains the Nashville thing. Other than that, I don't think it sounds good.
The fox catcher sounds nothing like the odr the odr sounds cheap and thin the fox catcher has a more solid tone creamy mids blended with rich highs and let's the guitar be heard listen to your own video
