Is The Philippines BEST COAST ROAD In Davao Occidental?
I've driven a few roads across the Philippines, but I think this might be one of my favourites.
From Santa Maria, the northernmost municipality of Davao Occidental, I ride through Don Marcelino and visit a spring fed by balete trees. From here, the road really becomes a feat of engineering, over "Winston" - and onwards to JAS, short for Jose Abad Santos.
JAS is a cool town - difficult to access until very recently, now the road is much better. Its tourism is developing, but it maintains this cool vibe.
South of JAS is the most adventurous section of all; the road used to run ON the beach, but now is slightly above it! The rock formations nearby are incredibly beautiful too!
And the flying foxes! With a huge wingspan, 15-20,000 of them live in a mangrove in Brgy Bukid - and they fly at 6pm on the dot, every day.
So with some time to spare, I found Mindanao's geographical southern point... and clambered there!
Davao Occidental, what an underrated province!

Thanks for once again highlighting the local handicrafts made with natural materials. Seeing the beautiful weaving and the patterns they use never gets old. I'm sure Nhel appreciates you bringing back the gifts for her, because she knows you're thinking of her when you're on your adventures. Besides, if she plays it smart, she'll stash money away in the bags she's not using in case of emergency.

Excellent documentary, KD. You're bringing the interactive camera work and editing deep into the harmony of visualization. In relation to the lighting source, do your best to keep it behind the cam whenever possible. Experiment with extra cams on the bike 🏍 to capture low road and side footage to be used as editing cut aways to enhance the visuals. Keep the great work going, my friend.

Gorgeous views there! Such a beautiful place. I cant imagine it is easy to declare a single place in the Philippines as your favorite or most beautiful. The flying foxes must have been magnificent to see when they all flew. It must be nice to be able to set your watch to them, knowing that they always fly at 6 pm.😆

I rode that route South to North in February of 2023. Much of the road from Bukid north to JAS was quite rough and frequentlly unpaved. Steep rutted mountain ravines full of large rocks and loose gravel. Lots of mud, places where the unpaved road had slipped away in small landslides, and not a route I would recommend for the ill prepared. Decent if you had a lightweight dirt bike with knobby tires but quite challenging on my Honda CB500X with 80/20 tires and a full load of gear. At the time you did indeed have to drive on the beach at low tide in one area, and there were two river crossings with no bridges. One near JAS had a bridge but it was under repair so you had to drive through the river below the bridge. The other crossing the bridge had not been built yet. If you crossed in the exact right path the river was only two feet deep at the most but if you deviated from the correct spot the river was deeper than my bike was tall. No room for mistakes. I walked the river before crossing as there were no locals to guide me to the right path. You probably saw my Google review of the Travelers Inn in JAS. I rode 20,000 kilometers all over the Philippines for 8 months last year and I am about to start up a new loop around the archepelago soon. Ride safe my friends!
