Is the PS5 a good 4K Blu-ray player? Is the Xbox a good 4K Blu-ray player? I get these questions a lot, so here are my thoughts on the gaming consoles vs a dedicated 4K player.

I’ve always used my PlayStation consoles as my entry level disc players. Literally the PS1 was my first CD Player then PS2 for DVD, and PS3 for Blu-Ray. I’ve usually bought dedicated hardware later in the lifespan, but for getting started on a new format, PlayStation has always done right by me!

I agree 100%. I own both PS5 and a UB820. PS5 is pretty darn good for UHD discs. There's a slight bump in quality on the UB820 and of course the Dolby Vision. I'm just part of that 2% that's looking for just that little bit more. I only had the PS5 to start and never felt the quality suffered in any way. I mostly got the UB820 for the Dolby Vision but also figured if I was going to upgrade from PS5 that I'd get 'a bit more' where I can.

I am hard pressed to see the quality difference. I mean yeah I’m side by side stills. That’s not the whole story. The my Xbox has a pretty loud spinning noise and freezes/skips a significant ammount of the time. I’ve maybe had one hiccup in all my playback on the Panasonic. My old Sony had similar issues and in addition I had to manually turn on and off Dolby vision, which game consoles don’t have as everybody has mentioned. I really do think people need to be made aware that the Panasonic ub 820 is the stick you use to measure the quality of a player. And it’s not all that expensive of a stick so just get the stick

My first foray into 4k HDR Blurays was with the 4K-HDR release Akira. I can't really speak to the remastering effort since it's my only 4k disc so far so I don't have a reference for what a 4k Bluray should look like. But man, the disc drives in both the PS5 and the Series X were running *really* loud. It was super off-putting. Is that normal for 4k Blurays or did I just get a dud? (The movie played fine from start to finish, HDR 10 did work. I'm just talking about the noise the drive makes when the disc is running.)

Thanks. Running all of my blu rays and UHD 4Ks on the dedicated Sony X700 paired with an A80J screen. I can confirm that the upscaling is better using the X700 over my PS5. @chrisfratz

I use an Xbox One s as my Blu-ray player so I can offer a few notes for that, Xbox has 24p support, you just have to turn on in the console settings, and it has the ability to check video and audio bit rates on the fly, it's just locked behind clicking the right stick on a controller for some reason, and there's no button in the player UI to get there.

I was lucky to get an X700 on clearance for $100 recently. It's a great player but I did run into the intermittent freezing that's been reported with it by others. Maybe 2 - 3 times during some movies (not all though), the X700 would just suddenly freeze when playing UHDs. I didn't notice it on bluray. I ran the firmware update and thought that might help but it did not. After reading more into it, I saw others online had resolved the freezing issue by turning off the 24p mode. I turned this off as well and haven't seen the freezing happen since.

@TBoogy3 Yes, but unfortunately a lot of the auto calibrarion sometimes is not correct. For instance I previously had one of those Sony TVs that the PS5 auto calibrated to, but it wasn't correct and I had to set it myself anyway. And doesn't that auto calibration only apply to the consoles HDR calibration screen? Which hardly any games use. It had the black levels set too high. It should be at zero for the best and most accurate HDR on my TV. And the brightness was also a click or two off the optimal. Best to look into your specific display to find the best settings for HDR. Though the auto calibrate is probably fine if not great.

Agreed with everything you said. I had a Panasonic UB-420 4k player before I bought my PS5 and when I got the console and compared movies, they looked exactly the same. The PS5's ability to upscale the DVDs might've been ever so slightly lower than the Panasonic but not enough to notice in most cases. I eventually decided to sell the Panasonic since the PS5 was doing such a great job and figured the most high-end dedicated player would out-perform my PS5 so someday when I need it, I'll buy it. For the time being, the PS5 is perfect with my Sony Bravia X900H.

Some things to add. Your Xbox One X should be able to play 3D Blu-rays without issue. The Series X does not have support. The PS5 and XSX not being able to handle CD's and 3D Blu-ray is actually ridiculous. It's a software update. There's no reason for it other than laziness (and maybe licensing) Also, for those still stuck on non-HDR displays, the PS5 player has HDR-to-SDR conversion. So, if you want to play your UHD Blu-rays on a non-HDR display and not have the colors look weird, the PS5 does just fine in that regard.

I had a Series X and was happy enough playing 4k movies on it. The biggest problem tough was that the Series X doesn't support the Bitstream mode, so I had very limited audio options since my TV also doesn't support DTS for exemple. As my 4k collection got bigger I decided to buy a dedicated player and got the Sony X800 M2, and I'm extremely happy with it and yes, there is noticeable difference in the picture quality, not night and day difference, but it's there. And now I have whatever audio or picture quality is available and also a better upscaling with is really nice

At that price I just keep my ps5 that can play games too. The ones that are $300, $400 have a lot of issues like scenes skipping or audio lag. The thing I disliked the most about using the PS5 as a disc player is actually the remote. The official Sony PS5 media remote is terrible for discs. There's no controls like stop, eject, and many others you'd get on something like your disc player remote. Even with the media remote, the PS5 makes you do many of the disc commands through an onscreen menu. You might as well just use the PS5 controller for all the good the remote does.

This has been my exact experience. LG CX OLED owner and have found the UB820 tone maps much better than the PS5 (plus has the HDR optimizer if you need to take something). I’m not sure if anyone else feels this way, but I’ve actually turned Dolby Vision OFF on my UB820 as I prefer the way most content looks in HDR10 over DV. Dolby Vision tends to be darker in general and limits the brightness of highlights. It could just be the OLED I have, but my eyes consistently prefer the static HDR10 grade, as the lower mid tones tend to be a tad brighter, and the highlights “pop” a bit brighter.

One thing that wasn't mentioned are the control functions and this can be very frustrating for non-gamers, like a spouse. Only basic functions have one button control and they aren't labelled, so infrequent users often forget which button to press. Other functions require a more complex sequence and some can be a real hunt to find them. It's definitely not as convenient as the remote of a dedicated video disc player. If you've got a non-gamer in the household, you may find yourself shelling out for the optional remote control to keep everyone happy and even though the optional PS5 remote control is better than the game controller for non-gamers, it's still not as good as most remote controls for dedicated video disc players or even the old PS3 remote control.

One fact you got wrong. The Xbox One S plays 3d movies, but not even backward compatible 360 3d games. As for sound, the one thing the Xbox One S and the Series S and X has s direct Dolby Atmos Headphones app, the DTS:X Headphone App, and Windows Sonic, a direct LPCM 7.1 to headphobe converters. True story: in 2008, our main theater room was so asymmetric, that it would cost $10K in labor alone to set up a Dolby Surround system. Instead I spent $100 on Turtle Beach Dolby Digital Surround headphones, and the Dolby Surround sounds like in perfect 3d audio. Now you just get Windows Sonic for free, Dolby for $15, and DTS for $20. The problem is you have to read the box and match the headphone player with the disc audio format. Keep likes with likes. I never owned a hone communal (non headphone) surround sound system, so I don't know if typical hone theater users have to manually set Dolby/DTS/LPCM every time you switch movies, or if it's automatic. You'd think the Xbox would be smart enough to autoswitch between Dolby Atmos Headphone, DTS:X Headphone, and Windows Sonic for LPCM. But apparently, it assumes you're such a big Dolby or DTS fan (but not both) where you want to play all movies in one format. I want to make the headphone format match the disc audio code. Dolby with Dolby, DTS with DTS, and Windows Sonic with LPCM. What is so gard about doing that? But if someone said labor cost $10K and only "the king spot" gets good sound vs $35 for 2 apps, and anyone in headphobes can hear, I choose B

As someone who owns both the PS5 and Series X, I prefer to watch 4K blu rays on the PS5. Honestly both consoles struggle at times to handle the 100GB 4K movies but I find the PS5 isn’t as loud as the Series X and I’ve felt that the Xbox is more hotter. I also find that the PS5 has deeper blacks when watching film (used the same set up and the same TV presetting). The Series X does have the ability to display the current Mbs pulling from the disk which I find Interesting in which I can’t find the setting for PS5 to show that. The Series X at times also has this weird jagged edge on the side of movies that I can’t figure out why it’s doing that. The biggest thing I found weird is that you have to specifically download the free Blu-Ray app for the Series X in order to watch movies while the PS5 is as simple as putting the disc into the system and pressing play. Overall I find the PS5 more capable and convenient but I’d love to get my hands on a dedicated player one day to see the differences

A note and a correction, the Xbox (at least the One S and One X) can in fact play 3D blu-rays. If you have it hooked up to a 3D capable display, years have to go to the display settings on my console and turn on 3D simply. I would assume the series x is the same way since they both use the same OS and software. And on a different note since my TV isn't that good in HDR, I always run my Xbox in SDR and notice that the color grade on some 4K discs in SDR are pretty dull, a recent example I can think of is the Truman show because I just got that movie in the mail from Amazon and watched it recently, but I found color on the 1080p disc looks better than what I got from the UHD, maybe the Xbox One S just sucks at tone napping the HDR down to SDR. Good video, just want to mention that I only have Gaming Consoles, (both of them from the previous generation), and I "do" play 3D discs on them, and they work.

I have a PS5 and recently upgraded my AVR from an older yamaha to a newer entry level denon (S570BT), and i feel it gave me a much better picture quality and the sound is also much improved.

I would say consoles are great 4K players not only terms in video and audio quality but also in terms of conveinience. Even though dedicated 4K players are better, its a nice way to save your money while also playing your games and movies at the same time

Love this review... I'm in the line of preferring a 4k blu ray player than a gaming console, considering that I enjoyed battlefield and call of duty playing less than a decade ago. Great perspective on this review. Can you cover short throw 4k projectors in a future review... With dolby vision support such as the formovie

I use my PS5 for 4k discs as well as games, for the reason that I can’t afford a dedicated 4k player right now and I don’t have enough space on my shelf currently for a dedicated 4k player. I found that the PS5 is a good 4k player for me right now. I don’t really need a high end 4k player anyways. I will admit that a majority of the time I watch the digital versions of my film collection anyway.

fascinating video, really appreciate that, like you I have 4k player and ps5 for living room and xbox in bedroom and tbh really happy with all of them but im a dvd 4k lover not a technophobe so the pictures and sound I get (with dolby atmos 5.1 soundbar) keep me in my happy place

I have a ps5 and an xbox series x and still bought a panasonic ub820. Each console had some drawbacks. Both had struggles playing Ghostbusters Afterlife. I noticed artifacting especially with non-4k discs “upscaling”. Both may have received an update since but the ub820 is so much better than I anticipated.

Perfect advice. I have the Panasonic UB820, and it's a great machine. I'm not a console gamer, so the cost was worth it for me.

Great video. I have a simple setup and I am very happy with my PS5. i do have about 50 4k movies but the issue I am having now is the TV I have. I have a basic samsung 7 series 4k 50" tv. It was fine back in 2019 when I bought it along with my PS4 Pro. But with this ps5, to experience the full capabilities of this console I will need to upgrade my TV. I was looking at some Sony OLED Tvs in 65 inch variants. Now if I had a more dedicated home theater setup, yea I will get a dedicated 4k player that has all the bells and whistles.

PS5 was my introduction into 4K bluray playback. The first 4K discs I bought after copping a PS5 had stickers on the plastic stating "perfect for PS5 playback", not that I didn't already know that. But I wouldn't be surprised if a MAJORITY of the consumer base for 4K blurays are a bunch of gamers who work normal 9-5s who can't necessarily afford a $3000 DV compatible OLED TV. The only time I had playback problems was watching CASINO during an small scene in act one that skipped a tiny bit. But I even read some top of the line players will have issues playing certain BD100 discs. John Wick 4, Dune, Chris Nolan films, etc ALL play phenomenally on my PS5

I've found that Dune depends heavily on the TV for black levels from PS5 feed. I've used 2 different OLED TVs and the first one struggled with the final scenes, this new one did much better.

Great video. The real tough part is they don't support 3D. The ps4 and Ps3 do though. So the PS4 pro/xbone x are really the best game console players since they do it all.

100% The Truth!! Having PS5, XSX, Panasonic DP-UB824, LG C1 and Sony HT-A9, I love my 4K Player so much. Upscaling 1080p BluRays is another world compared to the consoles. Further I like HDR Tone Mapping Settings on it a lot. Of course Dolby Vision is the most important feature, but also the possibilty to get DTS formats was a big win, as LG CX and C1 doesn't support it, unfortunately. Great video Jeff! I appriciate your channel. You gave me a lot of valuable information so far. Keep going. 😊🎞📺🤟
