Is the Roland MC-50 better than a DAW? Maybe........

Does the MC-50 provide anything that a modern DAW cant compete with? In terms of functionality, the answer has to be no however, in terms of a creative workflow, this sequencer (first released in 1991) allows a producer to focus on the things that really matter. MAKING MUSIC!

Roland MC-50 is the only thing I will ever use for writing music - been using one for over 30 years and it's second to none in my opinion. You can do whatever you want to with it, and without any of the stupid limitations of modern "hardware sequencers" and never have to deal with DAW latency. If you're looking to make music, your way, from scratch - look no further.

Im very tempted to swap my mc50 for something different soon. I planned to sell it over a year ago but its quite hard to part with once you get used to the workflow. maybe an mc80 would suit my needs if I can find one close.

@@suiteskillsproduction3563 I use my novation circuit as a sketchpad with a few patterns then sync the mc80 up and record all the midi to the mc80. I can then arrange all the patterns into a song. Really good dawless system plus the VE GS pro synth onboard sounds really good. I added a usb drive to mine recently too so no more floppy disks. If you can get an mc80 expanded its worth it. Just keep looking. 👍 I'm going to use the mc80 to sequence my Crave, Model D, Pro 1, Circuit Tracks and DX7. Only had it a week and loving it. The arpeggiator is really good with tons of options.

@@davidlloyd9598 Hi, i know its a year old comment, but i'm trying to get my mc80 to work with a gotek floppy emulator right now, i installed it and used ipcas floppy emulator v1.4 software to format the usb stick... and the mc80 can recognize the first virtual floppy on the usb drive, but when i switch floppys with the emulator the mc80 cannot recognize them, only the first one. did you get that problem? which brand floppy emulator did you use and which software did you use to format? would appreciate any info you can give me...thanks...dave

Around 1:30, I believe you are confusing channels and tracks on the MC 50. The sequencer has 8 tracks plus the rhythm track, and each track can send up to 16 channels to either or both of the MIDI ports. A track can send to a specific MIDI channel to drive a particular sound on whatever device(s) are on that MIDI chain, set to that MIDI channel.
@williamoates9887
@williamoates9887 2 года назад
Hey Peter, don't forget you can 'Merge' tracks, giving you a much higher track count, but it can get complicated ....

Just bought one yesterday, found this tip on youtube to format 2HD into 2DD (stick a piece of tape on the additional hole, rear face) and here I go! The switches have a good feel, and there's (almost) one switch per function. Although I've seen tricks that are not labeled, did anyone succeed to overdub a loop (loop recording) yet?
@williamoates9887
@williamoates9887 2 года назад
Easier to buy a 'Floppy Disc Emulator' to replace the floppy drive and keep your song data on a flash drive, very convenient and reliable. no need to seek out floppy discs

Just make sure that its been tested and comes with some floppy disks as they can be hard to get hold of. The disk drive is the most likely point of failure on these units so without the right floppy you wont be able to ensure its working how it should. Also you’ll be needing the instruction manual if you haven’t used one before as its not a unit you can just figure out due to all the unmarked shift functions etc. Linked instruction manual below👇 cdn.roland.com/assets/media/pdf/MC-50_MC-50MKII_OM.pdf

The answer to the question is the MC-50 better than a DAW, NO, not even close. I actually have a MC-50 but I do all my sequencing on my DAW and then use the MC-50 just for playback. The MC-50 was great for it's time but I just bought one a couple of years ago just for performance. I only have the MC-50 and not the MC-50mkII so I have to use an old program to convert my SMF for the MC-50, pain but it works so far.

I had the MC 500 mk2, and of course is not even close to what a daw can do. Stupid comparison and who says these external sequencer are better are just straight lying lol, they are STILL using a computer (guess what, they got a CPU, RAM, I/O just like any computer) but with a significant smaller screen and less functions.

you think its a great idea to use this redundant obsolete gear but after you pour a ton of paper route money into a dawless system you see how much time you waste...how quickly your ideas stop flowing ...simple tasks turn into minutes long chores within outdated operating systems and ancient firmware. There is a reason why all of this stuff is not being used by professionals being paid for being time effective. Don't get me wrong...its fun to go back in time and look and old tools like this but building a functional system around it just isn't a practical choice economically or creatively. Staring at a screen is wonderful...any opinion to the contrary isn't coming from a studio that makes money or records music people listen to. Nostalgia is a form of depression....when it comes to music writing tools look forwards not backwards.
@Vyrkadian
@Vyrkadian 6 месяцев назад
People were still creative with these old gears back in the 80's and 90's, many classic tracks were made with these devices, you are just limiting your opinón to making money out of producing fast, while many people make music just for the sake of having fun, trying other workflows not only PC/Mac based can be inspiring too. I personally like connecting old tech to modern machines, jaming, sketching or making full tracks. Obviously, on has to mix and máster in the DAW. Cheers.
@NathanHassall
@NathanHassall 6 месяцев назад
@@Vyrkadian Of course great music can be made with this sequencer. I even bought one for retail back in its glory days but I wouldn't look back...the same way I also mountaineer and I wouldn't use gear from the 70s today. Having fun is fun...being effective with your time and being able to get ideas out as they flow is critical in this age and its only becoming more apparent. If you look at almost any significant group from the Beastie boys to David bowie to the beatles...all of these groups opted to use the times current cutting technology for recording and producing. Even the most basic and simple sounding music of yesterday was made utilizing tools that reflect the era it came from. I totally understand where you are coming from...Iv been there. (Iv supported myself in the music industry for over 20 years) don't kid yourself into thinking avoiding technology like computer screens (your using anyway) is gonna ensure your more focused on making better music...discipline and experience trumps everything. Cheers!
