Just a nerdy vlog where I talk about recent conversations about the Roland TR8S being this Digitakt killer. The TR8S is awesome in its own right, without the need for slaying anything or anyone.

The TR8S is what it should have been in the first place .As a old model owner, I feel bad about this. It looks a bit better too. But i love the Digitakt for the abstract stuff you can make on it. no comparison if you ask me.

from what I've seen through videos and reviews to put it as simple as possible - the TR8S is a drum machine with sampler functionality. The Digitakt is a sampler with drum machine functionality.

I've played with the TR-8 and own a Digitakt... there's no comparison. The TR-8 is more of a ultra capable Volca Sample rather than a machine that gives you full flexability in sound / instrument design. I can only imagine it with sample included - it would allow you to do just enough to make a basic track without any extra tweeking. Case in point - I sampled just the noise of the jacks (normalised) with nothing plugged in, and turn the single hissing sound into an entire musical track with kicks, hats, bass notes, chords - everything - from that one hissing sound. The Roland is really just a sample trigger with benefits. Which is still powerful and you could pull a killer full track from (with per-note pitch change) -- but it's got nothing on the parameter locks of the DK that allows sample flipping, conditional trigs, super advanced LFO programming (also using it as a second envelope to control anything). Plus the Elektron reverb engine is so sweet. This is certainly a step up for a Korg Volca user -- but a step back for an Electron user!

to me they are completely different. I think that the main focus of the digitakt is sampling and the main focus of the tr8s is drum samples but whatever.

The TR8S just looks like a really good piece because Roland listened to their users. As a former TR8 owner, I loved the immediate jamming that it offered but it was limited for sure. I sat a buddy down in front of it and after 5 minutes he asked "can you load samples on it?" Seems like Roland has a mature drum machine on their hands now and that is a really good thing.

I have to say that I completely agree with you, those are two very different machines. But I also understand the debate because, as far as I can tell, a lot of people is using the DT in such a way that could really benefit from the new TR8S. Of course the DT is a very flexible machine and that's why it is incredible, for sure. But for a lot of people it is just a basic sample drum machine. If that's the case, I would say it is better to sell the DT and go with the TR8S. If you are into creating strange landscapes of sound, sampling on the go and midi controlling other stuff (as I do), keep it.

I'm seriously considering selling my digitakt to fund the tr8s. The latter seems so much more intimidate and good for making very quick drums & remixing them live to go along with my digitone for synth tones. For me the 8 sub patterns and 3 custom fill buttons per pattern + the fader per drum track make the tr8s really interesting for live play and remixing.

Digitakt > TR8S - device complexity, Digitakt > TR8S parameter versatility, TR8S > Digitakt - sound library (because it has both a series of synth engines in addition to sample loading). I have heavily used both devices, and the Syntakt in addition. I would say that the Digitakt has more strengths than the TR8S, but it just depends on what matters the most to the user. For me, I absolutely needed something that does more than sample playback. Having the FM drum synth engine and all the other native drum synth engines was more important to me personally, so that weighed more in my decision. Ultimately, it just depends on what the producer needs and wants most. But neither device is the "killer" of either.

Another point is long term support, if you buy a Digitakt today you know in 2 years you will continue to get updates. With Roland you know in 2 years they will try to sell you another device.

If you work mostly on a daw and play live with hardware and have a daw for sequencing or something else then the tr-8s is a great fit. If you work mostly in the studio with hardware but play live occasionally and you have a sampling problem (sample too many things) and hate sequencing with a daw then the digitakt is a great fit. Digitakt is so much deeper but the tr-8s is an easier machine to learn with arguably more instant hands on control. For me it’s the digitakt but it’s all about workflow.

Features wise they differ quite a lot. But most people who wants a drum machine will buy only one of them. And in that sense TR-8S may be a Digitakt killer. If I didn't already have Digitakt it may be that I would have bought the TR-8S instead. If only they would add timestretch/pitch shift to the Digitakt. Oh and stereo playback...like the TR-8S ;-)

I was thinking about to get a digitakt... But I wanted this piece for my live set, to work as a drum machine and only as a drum machine... The way a I see the TR8s is waaay better in the "Drum Machine" field, It has eight analog outputs (which is great to mix the drums and fit it right in the mix for the rest of the live set) and also has individual faders for each channel, and that is insanely good for a live performance... about the sampling... I think the objective here is to load your original drum samples and that is it... so in the "Sampling" field there is no comparison... The Digitakt wins easy the sampling fight... Now about the Drum Machine fight, the TR8s will win easily. I hated the tr8 look, but it sounds great, now the tr8s looks great, it will probably sound great too and you can add original drum samples... So it is a really nice upgrade. Anyways... Decide what is your need... For me, I think the TR8s will be better right now... But in the future I might need a good sampler, so the digitakt will be in the buying list again!

That's a good point... I'm a mix engineer... And I'll tell that working with MONO is the best thing you can do... Because in the mixing process you can recreate the stereo of that sound in the best possible way, without causing any problems in the mix... And one of the biggest mistakes from the self called "producers" in the eletronic music is to work with non controlled stereo sounds... Because if you get a stereo synthesizer and get a really huge sound with great effects like chorus, delay, reverb... sounding amazing... YOU ARE DOING WRONG... this will only give you problems in the mixing process. But since we are talking about a machine that is supposed to work in live performances... yes this will be a problem, because you know, in live performances you don't have time to recreate stereo of every little sound... but anyway if you imagine the signal flow in this machine, you can record stereo sounds in it, you will lose half of your audio channels (which it's also not good for a live performance)... but YES... you can record in stereo. So I agree with you in some points, for a live performance, it will not be great to use the audio channels in it, but in the other way, it also offers you midi channels, so you can sequence other stuff in it... and that would be great for live performance (just like the octatrack, but less expensive) And Another point, since its great to be sampling only in the studio... why the hell you just don't record it already in ableton or any other DAW and manipulate the sound in it... waaaay easier (in this scenario... don't make sense to have any sampler in the studio). So in the end, If you want a midi sequencer for live performances, you have a great product to do the job.
@jeanvictor4174
@jeanvictor4174 6 лет назад
Lets stablish that for its price it doesn't do half of what it should do... like I said in the end of the comment... I'ts only worth the product for the midi sequencing and the sequencer itself... But yes we are talking about live performances or mixing audio... because if you sampled something it's because: 1- You want to remix it (If you are remixing anything, you'll have to mix it) 2- You want to play in a performance those two are the options of what to do with that sample Now about the audio... Any vocal from a concert or anywhere else will be recorded in mono... the reason? because the singer use only one mic to sing... so the audio can only be mono from it's source... once you start to add effects or panning in this vocal or anything else that you recorded (from a single mic)... you start creating a stereo image... and there is two possible results in this situation, a good and controlled stereo image and a fucking amazing, but bad stereo image... Why is the fucking amazing a bad stereo image? because it has a correlation problem... and yes those stereos when converted to mono will sound terrible... But if it is a good mix with a good stereo image... when it gets converted to mono, won't cause anything to the sound... except of course, becoming mono... it won't cause any degradation or phasing shift or anything else, if it is well converted of course (and dude that is audio physics, there is no discussion about it)... So here's a tip, if you want a great mix, all the sources has to be in mono so you can build a controlled stereo image... because think about it... when you record anything from a mic, the audio can only be mono (that's why "normal" music usually don't have this kind of problem)... with eletronic music, you have to simulate this, as if your instruments were recorded from a mic Now about the effect of summing L + R in the DAW or in a analog console... if both do a fine conversion... you will have basic the same result... of course if you send a audio through a analog system it will add some characteristics to the sound... but the summing of L+R it will be always the same = MONO... good or bad, but MONO About the use of a samples, if yo have sampled anything and the sound when converted to mono has any degradation... then the sound is not well mixed and you should not use that sample... find another source. P.S.: i agree whith you, for the price... It should record in stereo... each audio channel should have a dedicated fader and at least 2 knobs... but you know... right now the Elektron is the Apple of the drum machine/synthesizer world = OVERPRICED
@dudemandudebro938
@dudemandudebro938 6 лет назад
I disagree, even on my old ass mpc that only let you take samples from mono. I guess it all really depends on what you are sampling, also after recording you can always add in stereo effects but as far as sampling goes it all really depends. A lot of things are better to sample in mono ( especially vocals brahhh) IMO. Depends on how crazy the original sample was mixed ofcourse.

I have tried both and much prefer the workflow and features in the Digitakt over most Roland drum machines. P-locks and conditional trigs are superb in the Digitakt which are missing from the TR-8 machines. The real competition would be Tanzbar and Tanzmaus drum machines as well as JoMax Alphabase machines.

The strengths of the Digitakt sequencer are massive, with 8 internal tracks for the sample engine and 8 midi tracks for external sound modules (a digitakt + 2 dsi Tetras is a monster setup) But simply put; I see two different very and very capable machines with a lot of creative potential . . . that would work great together ! . . .ps . . . I sold my tr8 to get a digtakt. This new one looks pretty nice but it is missing so many advanced features that make the digitakt so great. Also, does the tr8s do midi sequencing? The digitakt is the brain of my whole setup. That is one of the main reasons I made the switch

I never missed sample playback options in my TR 8, to me it's all about getting a good recreation of the classic TR machines all in one box. I don't have a problem with the green design I even started to like it more over time. I feel a bit let down by Roland though for not upgrading the sequencer of the TR 8 a little more. Storage space of only 16 patterns is extremely small, especially when you cannot copy and switch patterns while recording on the fly like you can in the Electribes. There are many comments saying the 8S is what the 8 should have been and I think that's partly true. When the Drumbrute came out I wished Roland had shown a little more effort in trying to compete with Arturia's sequencer concept. I was hoping for an upgrade for the TR8, providing individual track lengths, substeps or recordable rolls or at least a copy from A to B function inside patterns. Also, not automatically switching to 12 steps in scales one and two and not storing the tempo setting in the patterns and leaving out empty slots for sound storage makes the TR 8 seem like a slightly unfinished product. Seeing Roland come out with something new that now fixes the shortcoming of the TR 8 instead of doing it there really is a bummer to me. I mean, it's not like they didn't already get on the nerves of TR 8 users when they came out with the TR 09 and 08... 😒

I saw on the Aira Crew facebook page that Roland asked the group what they would like to see in a TR8 update. Looks like we may get some kind of update in the future for those sticking with the original. I'm keeping mine as I don't see the benefit when I have external samplers anyway

In my opinion TR8S is a "Roland style"(old school style) drum machine, I think it's great for quick & easy live play but you can do so much more with a Digitakt but maybe with a more difficult learning curve. (note that I don't own any of them)

Currently I own the TR-8, 08 and 09. Found that I really didn't use the TR-8 as much because the controls weren't as flexible and not being able to load in custom samples and not enough dedicated outs really crippled it's useability for me (plus the green was ugh). The Boutiques I really enjoy working with though, think I like the interfaces better on those vs the TR-8. But the 8s addresses all of the issues i have with the TR-8, so I'll be picking one up eventually. I considered the DigiTakt, but had heard it had some software issues with things like backing up projects ect so I never picked one up. Think both can suit the needs for someone doing studio or live productions, but am no expert on the Elektron side of things. Just wish the 8s is what Roland released initially, but they are listening and learning so good on them.

Good to hear your opinion on this. I watched a video this morning and it did make me wonder if Roland were trying to capitalise on the Elektron style, but they seem to still be pretty different to each other. Also, at 6:46 when you say "full", the little squeak when you say the "f" sound is definitely something that should be sampled and used in a track :D

similar but essentially different - digitakt, tr-8s and the electribe sampler....all sample based, groove boxes what's important to you? SD card slot? wave display? dedicated knobs and faders? proper midi in and outs? battery power? velocity pads? per step locks? reverb, delay mfx? multiple hardware outs? USB audio outs? trigger output? being able to backup your projects? patterns longer than 4 bars? different last step options? user defined fills total sample time available stereo samples price.

Just say it's ignorant Bo. It's ignorant to think the TR8S is a Digitakt killer. The TR8S is a drum machine with more in common with other drum machines like the Drumbrute. The Digitakt has more in common with an MPC or many of the older groove boxes that have come along.

Agreed. They are different animals aimed at different markets. I do have a TR-8S on order and am happily looking forward to replacing my TR-8 with it. That said, I would love to see a comparison of the Deluge and the Digitakt. The Deluge has been the center of my hardware workflow for months. I've bought a TR-8S (picked it up today). I also have an Octatrack MK2, which is why the Digitakt never really interested me. I would have to say that the #1 reason for me owning a TR-8S is I adore the sequencer work flow (basing this on a TR-8, but the S makes this even more fun and interesting). Super fun doing micro-timing and fills etc... Also, I thought the TR-8S has P-locks too? People get quite emotional about devices, but I think every device has it's place. People hate the Roland ACB, I think it's terrific - yet I have a bunch of analog synths too :) Put it this way, it's about the value you place on working with the device that counts and how it suits you. I still have a Boss DR110 that I use for fun! Nice as alway Bo.

@BoBeats First of all, thanks for the video. It's nice to have people talking about these instruments and comparing them, since there are a lot of them out there that do similar things and not everybody can afford to choose whatever instrument/machine they like. So thank you. And I do have a question. How would you compare the new TR-8s to the Analog Rytm MKII? I know the rytm its a whole different beast and comparing them may seem absurd for some people but, keeping it simple they are both drum machines with sampling capabilities. And of course ignoring the price difference. I ask this because I've been saving to buy the Rytm and now with the TR8S out there, and its price, I gotta say its really tempting me.
@BoBeats
@BoBeats 6 лет назад
I think the comparison is similar to the Digitakt. The AR mk2 shares a lot of similarities to the Digitakt, but in a sense the difference to the tr8s is lessened because the ARmk2 is more a drum machine and not a brain like the Digitakt. Ultimately the armk2 is among the best drum machines out there right now. And considering that u can get an ar mk1 for about 800-900 euro its hard not to argue for getting that over the tr8s. But. The tr8s is so much more hands on. Much more live oriented. However, a rytm you can have and learn for 10 years! Tr8 is more dated.

I put a raw tr606 kit in the Digitakt it sounds as good as my mates tr8, Electron should make a multi out option for the Digitakt maybe a usb box option. Does the TR8 S have midi tracks ? i use the midi tracks on the Digitakt to run drums from my AkAI S3200 and that has 8 Outputs . I think they would work nice together the TR8S and The Digitakt.

Good defense is being ran for the mono-sampler that lacks drum synthesis and outputs. (Overbridge is still rudely late, more like NOverbridge). Digitakt is a fun/limited midi controller though, but the sample/drum-synthesis layered TR-8s is more a RYTM replacement. TR-8s don't offer live sampling, but the stereo side chain input with FX makes up for it.

I think Roland products are more a massproduct for the massmarket. Does not mean it's Bad but fulfills more bread and butter tool. While Elektron or teenage are both more freaky machines for special wishes. I still hate Elektrons User Interfaces, their OS is instable but they Sound unique. As people tend to identify with their machines they are working with constantly it is a normal process that the one lobby says that the machine of the other ones is killed by their own. At the end it is always the music which counts and which relates more to the Creator then to the Machine. So just work with what you have and tweak IT to the max. Personally I'm always the most happy when I find ways to use the machine the constructors of the machine have never thought of. Because then you receive results which Sound not typical in any way. For example use a pocket operator 35 speak instead for vocals for drum loops and add them to the original sounds great...or the Tonic as Melodic synthesizer...Just enjoy to be creative and so not hide behind your Tools...it is you who does the music

So, i have TR, bought it 2 days ago, as the workflow is for me really simple. I want to combine this with Ableton, with PUSH, which is really bad if you want to mess with some instruments AND drums simultaneously, so TR should be a good addition to my PUSH... But you know what, i’ve tried DIGI at the shop, befor buying TR, and i’ve realised, that it is really nice instrument, still I can’t load my samples to DIGI, can I? Actually, buying TR, after few minutes with DIGI, i was not so shure if i don’t want to buy DIGI instead... TR is good for Live shows, i think, you don’t need so mutch possibilities to tweak sound on stage... i think... I’m playing also impro, so ok... there actually are some situations, when you need to tweak sound live, but TR is all about playing prepared shows, i think... Am i wrong? And yes, these simple are different instruments.;)

spot on two different workflows ....the Roland samples are a little static in comparison to Elektron however Roland needed a win, good job roland... The immediacy of the TR8 and TR8s is part of its strength. I have the TR8 and AR MKII it’s a great combo. I Traded up from digitakt to AR MKII.

You should be able to record samples from audio-in. Oh wait. That'll be an update for $100 next year. Gear heads need to demand a better class of drum machine in 2018.

I really like the more "what you see is what you get" aspect of the tr8s and I am thinking about getting a capable drum machine so that I can get my eyes of the computer when doing drums. The sample twekability therefore doesnt really bother me since that is something I am doing on the PC anyways. Programming drums right now just doesnt feel like playing an instrument and I am wondering if something like the tr8s will be more like that.

cool vid Bo! i like it when you do the outdoors videos! anyway...i would have never even have thought of comparingthe two, they're just two different beasts all together. i am intrigued about the roland though, i think mainly because I'm apprehensive about using the Elektron stuff because it is so in depth. the roland seems pretty straight forward from what i can tell.

You can't beat hardware sampling for workfow, I wish I had both you could sample with digitakt and then share samples between the two. When we have midi and cv there's no reason why its one piece of gear versus another its just a matter of saving up and getting more studio space to add more gear.

yeah there really isn't much of a difference with the tr8S and all the other sampling grove boxes from Roland in the past 15 to 20 years besides a couple features. They really need to step it up. Thank god for Elektron. on that note the Rytm mk1used is almost as cheap as the digitakt now ; )

Sweden reminds me of Russia. Does the sun ever come out? I have a TR-8S coming. Primarily, my interest is having the sliders and the ability to take things in and out of the mix easier, as you mentioned. The thing I do not like about sound locks is that at least to me it seems that with a sound lock, as soon as another sound on the same track is triggered, the previous sound is cut off. Especially with tracks on the RYTM that share voices.

The TR8S looks like a solid and fun piece of gear but whether it's a possible substitute for the DT depends on how you're using it. I use the midi tracks heavily on mine so in addition to a drum machine it's the brain of my entire setup, so I couldn't swap it out with a TR8S, only add it to the setup. If I were just looking for a drum machine and didn't care about sequencing I would definitely look into and make a decision based on how it feels to perform with (muting, soloing, switching around patterns). Personally I find the Drumbrute easier to bounce around patterns and play with than the DT but it doesn't sequence :p

I got the TR8S instead because I have the TR8 that I love and always use.. So it's time for an upgrade and I have the MX1. I'm really getting the TR8s because the sounds I want are already in there plus I can add my soundsfromMars 808/909 sounds.. I only use 909/808 stack anyway
@vemarcontent
@vemarcontent 6 лет назад
I had the TR-8 and I ended up selling it because at some point you end up getting bored with the sounds 808 and 909 with the trs8s you have more freedom when importing your samples, but digitak provides more possibilities than the tr8s, and as you say one more handling deep of the sample.

I don't like the layout of the Digitakt interface. Too much stuffed into too little space. The Roland has a much more inviting interface. I'd actually sacrifice some features to have a clean, quick and easy to use interface. I like the price point of both units however.

Really good video Bo! Impartial and unbiased. You state clearly that you have an affinity with the Digitakt, but also say that it is not without its flaws. I look forward to what you have to say about the TR8S when you get your hands on one. I really hope Roland are obliging! In my opinion, I think the TR8S will be one these devices that looks great on paper but not so great in reality. Its different to the Digitakt, its not a flexible as the MPC or Octatrak, its not as deep as the Tempest. I personally think that the only devices that may have to fear from it are the TR8 and the Drumbrute. I just get the impression that its trying to be the jack of all trades and it will end being the master none. With all of its limited 'functions' I think it give you a taste of doing something but not enough depth to make it fully usable. Myabe... hopefully I am wrong.

Comparing these two machines doesn’t work imho. Roland is going to implement some nice features in their TR8s. Some of these are features which are already implemented in smaller and cheaper machines, like recording knob motion (hello Volca!), microsteps (Circuit), individual outputs (DrumBrute) etc. Do not understand me wrong, these features are interesting, important and make the TR8s more versatile than it’s predecessor, but I still think, that the Digitakt has a lot more to offer like Graphical Display, Parameter Locks, Conditional Trigs) and a completely different approach.

8 assignable outputs is the most important overlooked feature of all beat boxes. IF only stereo out, then fantastic effects is necessary. Digitakt is out of my price range, so it is not a consideration. An open box new TR8s in a year or two will be affordable. It is not the whole answer, but a companion to my Electribe2.
@patrickseurinck3470
@patrickseurinck3470 6 лет назад
Yes, that's my main gripe with the DT, limited fx and no separate outputs. My mfb tanzmaus has them, but is only great for techno stuff. DT is cool, but could use 4 outputs or better fx.. You get what you pay for or course :)
@WildernessMusic_GentleSerene
@WildernessMusic_GentleSerene 6 лет назад
Yes. My Roland TR707 I bought new over 30 years ago had lots of outputs for individual processing...30 years later we keep getting stereo...or worse mono output only. I use and Electribe2 in stereo (only option) but the effects are not good, so use it mostly dry....not very pro sounding, but use only for synth jams.

Great footage in the snow! Like the shining! The look out hotel in the background. Lol I gave my Roland tr8 away. The shifting thru menus sucks . The tb3 is my favorite from that iteration from Roland . And like my Gia is much more useful and intuitive. The typical Roland peice of paper as an excuse for a manual is another HUGE issue for me as well as their poorly translated explanations of how their stuff works . And I wear glasses so the tiny size of what is printed makes it harder to read too! Tr8s “NAY”..🤨👽🙏🎶🔦✌🏻🕺🛸Christo

Since my circuit died, I have been wondering, how does the TR8S compare to the Model:Samples, but then again you can't beat the sequencer by Elektron. Everyone is trying to keep up with Elektrons powerhouse sequencers. Plus, you also get a screen, small, but doable. Elektron crushed Roland's Aira line up, and just about everyone else as far as I can see so far.
