In this video, we’ll talk about whether or not the scout rifle is now obsolete. But before getting into the nitty gritty of things, we all have to understand first what a Scout Rifle IS - and what it ISN’T.
The Scout Rifle is a very specific type of rifle designed to handle pretty much anything a rifleman might need. It's not just any old rifle with a scope slapped on the front, which, unfortunately, is where a lot of the confusion comes from. While Cooper did think having the scope up front helped with quickly spotting targets, carrying it around easily, and getting to your backup sights in a snap, that alone doesn't make any bolt gun a Scout Rifle.

I believe its timeless design and functionality still hold value, especially for those who appreciate a well-rounded firearm for diverse shooting needs.

It's an AI text to speech. This whole channel is just ai generated blogs and copied wiki articles about things they have no idea of what they're talking about.

So many of the reasons we buy guns are really just flights of fancy that we come up with to justify spending more money on guns. If you are a gun writer that's how you make a living. That said, there are thousands of guides and packers here in the northwest that spend 3 months of the year or more in backcountry full of bears, wolves, and mountain lions. There are thousands more off grid types. These guys just need a super reliable short gun that works in a saddle scabbard or on your back all day is pretty handy. Some like a big bore revolver. Some like levers gun, but I do know a few that have a scout type setup. Just because You don't know any of them might just say more about where you live than anything else. Oh and NONE, of the ones I know carrya AR- 10.

You don’t know me, I carry either an AR15 in 300BLK or an AR10 in .308 when I’m in the mountains depending on what I’m doing and where I’m going. Admittedly the .308 is mostly for Elk hunting, although if I’m heading into an area with high bear or lion activity I carry the AR10. Offgrid life in the Colorado Rockies, and yes you can have outstanding cell reception and internet living off grid these days. Only threw that in because of how many people I’ve had say “offgrid but online, yeah that’s not offgrid” 🤦‍♂️. Verizon covers EVERYWHERE these days folks. 🤷‍♂️

Had no intention of disparaging your weapons choice, I just was responding to the assertion that no one still lives like that anymore. Growing up in the remote Bitter Root country in Idaho, I know that there are a lot of people who make the choice to live and work in places where firearms are everyday implements and not range toys.@syskusa6512

I have a Ruger Gunsite Scout Rifle, it is my hunting rifle. I added a MDT LSS chassis, a Primary Arms 1x-6x LPVO and Vickers sling. And in the near future I will add a suppressor.

From what I remember about the articles when Jeff Cooper first was published about this 308 was about getting ammo in all parts of the world and a lot of the reason for bolt gun was the same add in the weight and it makes sense however one by sixes or higher powered variable optics have pretty much eliminated the need for scout scopes You can’t overlook this is supposed to be a world hunting rifle The size and lightweight was about hunting in thick brush and quick reaction

I have a Ruger-Marlin 1895 SBL set up in a scout-ish configuration With a 1-8 lpvo. It fills a specific role for me when Im certain places. Personally, if I feel the need to grab a bolt gun, I just grab the 300wm. For just about everything else, an AR. I think scout rifles are fine still, but the idea that it checks all the boxes is no longer the case. There are better options out there now.

part of the reason for having a boat gun is, it has less moving parts far more likely to be reliable. That being said, obviously, you don’t just want a bolt gun as your only gun. An AR 15 is your only long range gun you better have a parts kit for it or get a spare A.R. 15 overt time defects, or by accidents things do break

The whole idea of a scout was you scouted. Recon. Quick light. And in the old days provide food. The idea was a hunting rifle with the capacity to boost you round count with a box magazine. Fire rapidly break contact get back and report. Caliber commonality. That’s it.

If it's not rapid fire capable in a 308 and dependable, it's not worth a second look for me.

Bolt actions were ment to be accurate, hard hitting. Scout rifles are carbines, more suitable in pump lever action or auto loaders. No need to try to make a bus fly.

It's an odd thought experiment for a rifle almost nobody needs. If I were heading out across the plains of Africa on foot (one of Cooper's scenarios for the Scout rifle) for an extended foray into the bush, I'd be about the fourth person to do that in 100 years or so. You'd take a vehicle today, maybe several rifles if you thought you would be hunting anything from Kudu to Cape Buffalo, and you'd have equipment, probably a guide, tents, provisions, etc. A do-it-all rifle that's light with enough punch for whatever you might encounter isn't a horrible idea, it's just that it has almost no military application and almost nobody treks across vast expanses on foot anymore.
