Using tools as an improvised or even purposefully carried weapon has been fascinating to me ever since I started training with a hammer. In this video I explain my ideas on the use of a screwdriver for self defense to Sensei Seth and our new friend Jake from Armchair Violence.

You guys should try Swedish snuff. anyways (in most cases you wont see the attack coming before you're stabbed) this depending on the situation of course but with practise (this is the reason why you should join hard2hurt or other good self defence classes) it's quite possible to block this in many ways like for instance with a three sixty or front kicks or end the attack with a kotegeashi. love the vid!!

Philips is the same from any angle, where standard will contact with different parts of the blade which will change how the handle moves in your grip on impact depending on the angle. I've always heard of the blades being sharpened to get around probation restrictions, but that ignores you're not trying to hack limbs off with it just poke deeply.

The flat head versus the phillips screwdriver has been tested. A martial artist who was also a butcher used a large roast to determine which screwdriver was more deadly. While using an ice pick grip, stabbing downward into the the roast, the phillips went in easier and much deeper than the flathead.

Doesn’t surprise me. That’s not where the convo ends though. The reason a flat head is used amongst those who actually use screwdrivers as weapons is because the flat head is also used to break into places and burglarize. Here in the US a flat head screwdriver is a weapon you will find on street people and it’s used frequently to stab people.

I actually would like to see a loaded fist video. My criticism of his kubaton take has always been that if you get one with a good grip it's just a loaded fist, but you can do more damaging hammerstrikes as well. So the real question is just, "Is a loaded fist better than an empty one?", and he never addresses that question.

@dacedebeer2697
@dacedebeer2697 2 года назад
Rolls of quarters are good for shadow boxing with a little weight and less trouble than putting on gloves. While it certainly would cause more damage than a naked hand, remember your bones are between the metal cylinder and the hard bony surface you're striking, so it would also cause more damage to your hand. Maybe less strikes but more powerful? There might be a case to be made for that in some specific circumstances.
@JCPRuckus
@JCPRuckus 2 года назад
@@dacedebeer2697 - The alternative way to consider it is that you have a metal cylinder supporting the bones of your hand and allowing the energy to transfer directly through and into the fleshy padding of your palm. Lots of styles of fighting gloves have a roll of padding for you to grip. So presumably there is some value in having no gap in the fist.

The Philips head genuinely gives you, even if it is just subconsciously the feeling that you're holding something designed to go into things. Here in NYS if an attacker presents any form of weapon for the sake of committing extreme bodily harm to you, you are within your rights to match whatever level of force needed to preserve your own safety upto AND including lethal force within the context of self defense. Translation: If a guy pulls a knife on you in the NYC subway, you are allowed under penal law to defend yourself upwards of taking the attacker's life to save yourself. Problem is a LOT of my fellow New Yorkers don't even know this. Assault laws in NYS are super strict and many people assume even protecting yourself can land you in legal trouble...which is far from true. I'm in private security (body guard, bouncing, etc) so knowing these laws and statutes is part of the gig. I need to know what level of force I can use legal if my life is in danger, and I believe ALL New Yorkers need to know this. Needless to say things are pretty bad here in terms of violence, so being armed with such knowledge is vital. I saw a poor guy get his arms and hands slashed by an attacker because he refused to fight back. He just tried to mitigate the damage, not counter attack...because I assume he thought if he hurt his attacker HE'D be the one to get arrested.

My guy I’m from the Bronx castle 🏰 hill and park Chester 6 train nyc all day ex military and law enforcement NYPD 11 years. I workers all over nyc night clubs self defense only works in nyc on couple of variables 1 you just retreat runaway first and there better be a witness that see the attacker running after your or on camera 📷 2 does the attacker have a weapon on there person or showing it or using physical threats or verbaling say I’m going to cause harm 3 you better not have any form of training or be younger and much larger human being So if 5,7 150 lbs man’s attacks 6,5 295lbs man with his bar hands and the bigger guys kills the smaller guy the courts and the law may not be In Your favor also you need be careful On call 911 and speaking to the NYPD when the self defense happens and form of admission can and will always used aginst you under stand the laws not what some may think 🤔 in the moment of you police 👮‍♂️ discretion doesn’t always help when there’s quotas involved My advice is to always record if anything 2 run away and call the police 👮‍♂️. And again never speak to them cuz if there investagitnting N assault or homicide that took place they can arrest you. So again be careful don’t be a tough guy in nyc

Sadly.... Carrying a screw driver on its own without a reason in the UK is an offence!😓If you get pulled over and have a screwdriver under the car seat or in the door pocket you can be arrested... a charge probably wouldn't stick if you haven't got priors, but if you're out on parole or anything then you're Screwed!..... 😂

Haven't actually used it as a weapon in that time, but it's been very handy on a few occasions... as an actual screwdriver. 😁 If you really want to not be sus carrying a screwdriver, you can also carry some screws... 😉

Dick Marcinko talks about the lethality of a screwdriver in one of his books. He said that the more dangerous and lethal attacks were penetrating as opposed to slashes. Of course in the book he sharpened it. I was also impressed with how easy it was to switch grips with a screwdriver handle. As always, love your content. (Even tho I'm an Aikido guy. lol)

One of my concerns with this as a self defense weapon is that (similar to a knife) if your assailant is pumped full of adrenaline and doesn’t know they’re being stabbed (i.e. they didn’t see you produce a stabbing weapon and think they’re just being punched), they may not REALISE they’re taking so much damage and continue attacking, and you may end up doing more damage than you anticipated. It’s more a legal problem than a practical one, but as someone in a place with very strict self defense laws (the UK), it is something that would deter me from carrying a stabbing implement as a self defense tool even if it can be justified that it was legal to have it on your person. To be completely honest though, I don’t have statistics on how likely that scenario would be, so maybe it’s not as big a risk as I assume? Either way, the risk definitely doesn’t exist with a flashlight, so part of me feels like it’s a safer bet to stick to that as a primary option. WDYT?

I feel like someone that is going to run through 20 stab wounds is probably going to run through most things you can throw at them. If they are continuously attacking you, you SHOULD be in the clear, but I agree that UK has some tricky laws. Frankly, a screwdriver might be more viable in the UK simply because it's one of the few things you might not get arrested for carrying
@ArmchairViolence

Yeah, I just looked it up and M99 is essentially right. If the cops think you had it with the intent of fighting (whether it's self-defense apparently doesn't matter), you get up to 4 years. Anything you carry for self-defense is instantly illegal, BECAUSE you're carrying it for self-defense. So, get really good at martial arts, I guess. (I'm not a lawyer, and this isn't legal advice. I just Google things.)

@@Matt90Nine This is a really great analysis. I agree with lots of it, particularly the case of the umbrella and walking cane. The only thing is that I wonder whether a torch would be classified as a weapon if it was used to flash people in the eyes (as opposed to clubbing them in the head with it, i.e. keeping a small palm-sized light). There are self defense items you’re legally allowed to carry, namely alarms and dye sprays, where the caveat is that they cannot be used to do any harm to the other party. It would be interesting to know if the light would qualify as this. It could also be feasible to argue your right to carry it with reasons other than self defense. An exceptionally good argument is keeping it in your car, since looking in an engine bay even in daylight can be tough without one. A decent one might be if you walk through an unlit area near your home (although the better option would be to avoid that in the first place, but hey, some people live in the countryside and it’s not an option for them). A barely passable one might be that you’ve been caught out in surprise situations before where you thought ‘damn, I wish I had a light, my phone is dead, this sucks’. Honestly, I might try and do some digging in common law to see if there is precedent of torches used in self defense and/or torches in everyday carry. That would give us the clearest answer. I suppose as @Armchair Violence says too, even with a torch, you gotta get good at martial arts. You can’t be charged for having hands, as much as the prosecution might love to try.
@domzbu
@domzbu 2 года назад
I think the idea is, if you’re being threatened by a guy holding a knife or obviously some concealed weapon in his clenched fist down by his side, then the screwdriver might even up your chances of either a) deterring him (I did this with a pen once in exactly this situation, with a burglar outside a friends house, and he didn’t know it was a pen luckily) ...or b) even up your chances of you dispatching that person instead of them despatching you, where they come at you and give you no escape route, also apply to multiple attackers.
@domzbu
@domzbu 2 года назад
@@Matt90Nine that’s some serious bullshit on the violent crime stats mate. I live in a nice neighbourhood in London and I can tell you that you don’t have only a 0.1% chance of being physically hurt in your entire lifetime by a criminal. That’s just hilarious. Also, the aspect of deterrence and psychological preparedness can play a huge role, at those times. And carrying a torch but only on a key ring? What?? It’s not illegal to carry a torch of any size, their primary function is lighting the dark, and the uk is dark early for half the year. UK law permits the use of any object as a tool of self defence if the force is deemed proportionate and if the object or tool is coincidental to hand and as long as its primary purpose is not as a weapon. So a torch is a perfectly practical self defence tool providing you can justify the context of your defence and level of force.

I've also looked at my hammer pliers, drill bits but my favorite is a combination open end, box end wrench, about 6 inches long. I find a 19 mm works best for my hand thow someone with bigger fingers might need a larger wrench.

How about a combination wrench? Open end/ box end. The advantage over the screw driver would be less chance of puncturing the attacker. Also allows the use of compliance holds by trapping fingers in the box end or between the teeth on the open end. Not to mention bone shattering strikes with he ends or flat shift.
