In this video we look at the SmartMi P1 Air Purifier with Apple HomeKit.
If you’re in the Apple HomeKit camp, there haven’t been a lot of options if you were in the market for Air Purifiers. The Vocolinc PureFlow is a great product, but the size and price make it a tough choice to put in a smaller room. This is where the new SmartMi P1 Air Purifier slides in to save the day.
The Smartmi Air Purifier is a smaller HEPA style filter which means that you’re going to have to get used to the idea of purchasing a new filter every year. Having been burned in the past, I specifically chose to not create this review until the filters were available for purchase on amazon.com.
Smartmi has paid special attention to their filters and have given us two different options in that address two specific use-cases. The first being the Pollen filter which will help to deal with the dust and pollen in the air, and the second with the Oder Control filter which uses activated carbon to better deal with various smells and volatile organic compounds.
From a smart perspective, the Smartmi P1 comes with the typical support for Homekit, Amazon, as well as GoogleHome. It should be noted, however, that you will need to create an account on the Smartmi platform to be able to use the Amazon and Google voice assistants. Fortunately, there’s no such restriction with the Apple HomeKit support. Local control FTW!
From a sensor standpoint, the SmartMi does expose the PM2.5 sensor as an AQI sensor within Homekit, but unfortunately didn’t include a temperature or humidity sensor which is typically standard in this type of device. On the bright side, this is a perfect example of where Homekit shines in that you can easily use a device like the Eve Room Gen2 to trigger the SmartMi when the air quality in a specific room gets out of hand.
As far as my specific use-cases, I’m using my Smartmi purifiers in my kids bedroom to make sure that the air is clean while they are fast asleep in their beds. If the pandemic has taught us anything it’s the importance of clean air in our environments.

I purchased one when they first came out because they had a discount code for them. I have been pleased with its performance overall. The high setting is quite loud but it shouldn't need to run on that for very long before cleaning the air and dropping back down to a more manageable sound level. I have it in the Master Bedroom to help with my wife's allergies. Since we live in Central Texas Hill Country (the mega location for allergens), it seems to be helping. I like the idea of the automation to turn on prior to bed time at full speed for 30 minutes to help clean the room. I think I will add that to my automations as well. I would like to know what your other automations are and please add them to your web site where you are showing your other automations. This would be particularly helpful for folks trying to set up automations in their homes.

Hey Frederick! I totally agree that the high setting is pretty loud, but thankfully I only run it that way for about a 1/2h a day. :) We've been hit pretty bad for allergy season here in Montreal as well. Wishing your wife a quick recovery. I'm watching my sons and it does NOT look fun.... I did go back and added this automation recipe to the website as well so hoping that helped you out. It's also pretty much the same with the Vocolinc, although the vocolinc requires a specific setting to turn it into Nightmode and turn off that bright LED screen. Thankfully that's not necessary with the Smartmi.
