I only bought a couple of them the other day and the amount of time it saves is unbelievable. Not to mention it saving the shoulders a bit with so much less trowel work flattening in. I bought 2 ox plastic ones 900 and 600mm and one nela black edition 600mm metal edge. I've only used the plastic ones so far. What do you prefer after using them for so long metal or plastic?

Hello again mate, I’ve been a spread for the best part of 30 years and I never tried any of these new gadgets, would you recommend them? I mean speedskim, flexi trowels and water sprayers? I’m old school just have marshelltown trowels a hawk and wetting in brush and a twitcher. Thanks

Have you ever suffered the loss of grip through tennis elbow? if so how did you recover? I dropped trowel with pain. thought I'd push on through it when on finish trowelling other week, now having to use left hand to support my right. Its the back hand motion mostly, stabbing pain in the lower outer side of elbow(stops gripping strength). Any help or tips from you or your subbies much appreciated

Sorry to hear that Terry, ive had a bad ache in forearm from over doing it, but thankfully not tennis elbow, currently have a trapped ulnar nerve which makes small finger and side of hand go numb with loss of grip, but fortunately my hawk hand. Hope you can get some advice, good luck👍

Hi Eric, another great vid, cheers. Do you know if the plastic and metal blades are interchangeable and can be used on the same handle?
@ThePlasterer
@ThePlasterer 3 года назад
Hi mate, thanks, they are slightly different designs, but even if you could its twiddly enough not to want to, when you need to change the blade because of wear and tear, fair enough 🙂

Hi mate, I think you can use the same handle, but trust me, you wont want to keep swapping the blades over, the ware and tear on the small clips wont be good either, hope this helps

Is it better to use the plastic speed skim rather than the metal one to flatten or doesn’t it matter?
@ThePlasterer
@ThePlasterer 3 года назад
Hi John, Plastic for ruling off first coat as it opens up the surface, metal when doing wet trowel up of second coat, if you use metal on wet first coat it brings water to the surface and causes blistering.

What would of happened if you used your metal speed skim instead of plastic one ?

@amateurvegan2636
@amateurvegan2636 3 года назад
In my experience the metal blade is too sharp and harsh to hit skim too early with. Brings a lot of water to the surface and ends up dragging the material around too much on the surface. Personally I’m a plastic trowel man. Lay on flatten with steel trowel. Sponge float depending on wall. Speedskim and finish with plastic trowel best finish I’ve ever had.
@amateurvegan2636
@amateurvegan2636 3 года назад
Always rule first coat with speed skim though to make sure everything is flat and sometimes don’t bother to speed skim second coat just flatten with steel and finish with plastic. Less work, better finish Work smart not hard

@@amateurvegan2636 thanks brother your right I've been using the metal blade instead of plastic was being lazy and found the metal blade to Sharp and taken the plaster away when its wet
@mcspad
@mcspad 3 года назад
There’s too much flex in steel blades if gears wet you can’t get wall flat. Can make it smooth but will never as flat(very slight ripples if you looks down the wall
@asif530
@asif530 3 года назад
Does the metal blade need the corners rounded. I found with the plastic one I had to round the corners to stop it digging in
@ThePlasterer
@ThePlasterer 3 года назад
I've rounded the plastic one, but the metal one seems alright to me without rounding the edges, but you could if you wanted

Hey just subscribed can this be used straight out of the box Would u use to flatten first coat or is it just for finishing
@ThePlasterer
@ThePlasterer 3 года назад
Yes, can be used straight out of the box, no, you want a plastic blade for leveling the first coat as it opens the plaster surface to aid drying, if you use metal blade to flatten first coat it will bring water to the surface to soon and you risk blistering. hope this helps

So can i confirm the following; Plastic blacde for only flattening the first coat as it looks like you use it on both in the vide? also I'm just starting out and wanted to know what set of tools you would recommend? also you say cut the corners of the plastic sppedskim - is this essental?
@ThePlasterer
@ThePlasterer 3 года назад
Hi Mate plastic just for flattening first coat, then metal when its at the water stage, you don't have to trim the corners off no. @ThePlasterer
@ThePlasterer 3 года назад
Plastic one for leveling off first coat while it's still very wet, it opens the surface of the skim, then metal one for the first wet trowel of second coat once you start spraying or splashing with brush, basically works like a giant finishing trowel, then ultra flex trowel to finish👍dont use metal speed skim on first wet coat as it brings water to the surface, which will cause blistering, hope I havent confused you
