The TaylorMade BRNR Mini Driver is proving to be a huge hit on tour, but what type of club golfer would use the Mini Driver and what club would it replace in your bag?
In this review I hit the new TaylorMade BRNR Mini Driver Copper to see how it performs against my driver and fairway wood and to see where it would realistically go in my bag and if it is worth putting in play.
If you liked the video hit the 👍 and leave a comment below with any feedback.

I LOVE my BRNR 2023 model. I got the 13.5 and use it as a 3 wood between a 9 degree driver and an 18 degree 5 wood. I hit it on the tee all the time and off the deck/rough and it just hits solid and pretty straight. It's honestly my most solid club in the bag after my 8 iron.

3 woods out 13.5 degree Mini Driver is in. It’s playing abit like a 2 wood. It’s confidence inspiring on tighter fairways. Put it in the bag Hannah and be one of the cool kids

I was amazed at how far I hit this club (11.5*), like you say about 10 yds short of my current driver. I’m a lot more accurate with the Mini, my last round (Copperhead) I pulled the driver out of the bag and played with the Mini and missed 1 fairway. I hardly ever hit 3 wood off the deck, just used it as a 2nd tee club so this Mini is here to stay. Will drop the driver and 3 wood and probably add a strong 5 wood 16-17*, more of a 4 wood for second shots into par 5’s. Taylormade has done something special here!

I’ve had an “Original One” mini driver since they came out a few years back. Didn’t always get on with it but I tried it with my 5 wood shaft (HZRDUS RDX 6.0 70g) and it hasn’t left my bag since. I’ve since cut down a driver shaft I had laying around (HZRDUS green 6.5 70g) to around 3 wood length or just below and this thing is gun. It’s super handy for long recovery shots which is pretty much my game 😂👍🏽🍻

@hannahholdenNCG I think if most amateur golfers were honest 3 wood is useless, not good enough with it consistently from the tee as a driver replacement and not quick enough clubhead speed to hit it from the deck. The guys that are quick enough don't need it (hit it to far to need on par 4's into greens) and those that are quick still aren't accurate enough for the most part from 220+ to hit the green. 5 wood helps with slower swing speeds, bigger mini driver head is better as a second option from the tee

I took the driver and 3 wood out ...added the mini and added a 4 hybrid..I can't see any real difference in distance lost etc..however accuracy and keeping the ball in play has improved a great deal for me..ive got the 13.5 with the heavy weight in front..lower driving shot that rolls out well..the few times I've hit it off the deck it did it's job..Overall I'm happy with it and the results ..

Good review - I have a tsr2+ which is a great club but don't use it a whole lot - like it for a fairway finder and low shot but would never use it off the deck - think these two clubs are great if you struggle with driver or as you say have a steeper attack angle

Another very informative video Hannah. Thank you. I would say, look again at your smash factor! Wow! I'd recommend taking your most lofted club out and putting this in the bag for a few rounds. Just to see how often you'd be in the situation to use it. Personally I'd play it over my driver, as my driver just because of the consistency of hitting fairways. But I'm not a great driver of the ball. Anyways So that's just me. Keep up the great work. Cheers.

I love my mini driver. I personally don’t like looking down on a huge oversized driver. I have the 11.5, playing it with the standard settings, and get just as much distance as I do from my driver. Per my CT10 sensors from my last round here are some of my better drives 255, 255, 257, 277, 289, and 292. I don’t plan on hitting it off the deck so it will replace my driver. With the strong lofts of today’s irons I plan to add another wedge to help with the gapping.

Interesting to hear your comments about attack angle and types of golfer this would suit. I consider myself an ok iron player who has struggled with driver. I have been playing last years model and it was a revelation. Struggling this year as i think i am teeing it too high added to a positive attack angle. Would you normally have a negative attack angle with driver?

Have you tried a shortened and hot melted driver? Standard driver is about 45 1/2 or 3/4" with swing weight is about D3 or D5. If you have an old driver, take it in, have it cut down to 44 3/4 and hot melted to E2 with a medium or jumbo grip. Bam, a max mini driver.

@@GaryCahuenga Heavier swing weight is critical. I can't emphasize that enough. I have a Ping 10K at E5 which is the straightest and longest avg of all my friends. When I tried the standard D5 at the store, I straight whiffed 5 of 10 shots and topped the other 5. The store guy agreed right there that we should stop. They need to make it in lower lofts. Many of us older guys, who grew up hitting those tiny wooden woods, today’s drivers are just way too large. We prefer a smaller head. But I don’t need a 11.5 degree loft. I need a 8.5 or 9 degree driver in that smaller head design. Someone needs to bring back one the same size as the mini, but in lower lofts. I like the look of the Callaway mini better than the TM.

I love my “mini” TM driver! I have the previous model (11.5 degree) which is the same as this but darker colors. Kinda wish TM wouldn’t call it a Mini cause it makes it sound goofy. I only lost about 15 yards or so vs my normal driver but I actually sold my normal driver, because my “mini” or as I call it- Mr. 2 wiggle has me in more fairways than I’ve ever been in! I’d say my fairways off the T went from about 60% to 85%! It’s the real deal for me! I’ve even had a handful of 300-310 total distance drives with it. So 310 & in the Fairway, how could I go wrong? :) So the top end of my bag is 2 wood, (Mr. 2 Wiggle) which averages 280, QI10 4 wood- 250, QI 10 7 wood 220 then hybrid/irons blah blah etc. I actually played today with some friends and there’s nothing quite cooler than them getting frustrated when Mr. 2 Wiggle out drives their $5-700 Big Boy driver! 😂😂 & IN The Fairway! Fair warning Hannah, if ya put in the bag for a few rounds, you’ll get addicted to the increase in Fairways off the T 😉

I had the SLDR Mini driver 12* from 2015 to 2021, used it on Par 4s that were 300 - 350 m at my home club, many of which driving innacurately to 230+m would leave you in bunkers or water, so a 210 -220 m drive was just right to lay up and have a short iron for my second shot. Sold as I have had back surgery and currently hit driver about 220m. Was an excellent club for that purpose and as I didn't carry a #3 wood but a 17* #4 wood for ~200m. Current Hcp 8.7, was sliding up and down between high 3s and mid/high 4s.

I game this club in the 13.5 loft. Who is this club for? Well, if you're anything like me, the driver sometimes has to go in timeout and this club gives me 90% of my driver distance but seems easier to find fairways which improves my score. I also occasionally play this off the deck on long par 5's, and also have a more penetrating ball flight that I would not be able to carry over a bunker and land soft. For that scenario, I have a G430 7 wood which is like a secret weapon still even though they have recently gained popularity in many tour players bags. And I found this Mini Driver v2 in a Ventus blue/black shaft and walked straight to the register!

It's a big 2-wood. Back in the steel shaft and wooden head days, a normal driver length was 43.5". That's with stick is, too. Because of tremendous improvements in shafts and heads, it behaves much more like a 2-wood (despite being a 3-wood length), and really approaches the driver. The bigger (that an 3-wood) head makes it more accurate; the shorter (than a driver) shaft makes it even more accurate. I've played 4 versions of this club, replacing the 3-wood. Generally, it's about 15 yards shorter than my driver, but WAY more accurate. A true "fairway finder." Despite playing a well-fitted driver, I've been tempted lately to drop the driver completely and add yet another wedge. But, no matter what, I'll NEVER go back to a 3-wood.

You made a very good point about this being more suited to iron players. Been using ping g400 driver for past couple of years and bought this when it came out. I'm losing about 10 metres but dispersion is much tighter and the feel and sound is 100x better. Off the tee I'm getting 250 metres out of it, which is fine for me. Would definitely recommend to players who like to tee it lower and play it more like a 3 wood

Also what shaft would be best to go in,would i closely match it to my driver shaft as that’s what the primary use will be? It’s clearly a horses for courses situation. I was playing a TSR 3 driver, having lessons, but still spinning at 3500, so got refitted into a 9 AiSmoke turned down to 8, with low spin stiff shaft. As you say in Your video, i hit down 5 on my irons, really squeeze them away. My pro has given up on trying to get me hit up on driver, as age 67 been hitting down since the late 60’s. I spin the AiSmoke at 2300, which really suits, have a AiSmoke 16.5 degree 3 wood, and it’s my favourite club in the bag. All of that said, where does a mini driver sit in my bag? You say it’s a low spin option and suits someone who hits down, i am neutral with the AiSmoke. Don’t think i am going to ruin a working bag, but will keep it in mind.

I would be tempted, based on what you say... I usually don't even carry (or play) a driver, limiting myself to a 4 wood, which I control quite well (and manage to get to 260-270 yards total) as I tend to hit down on the ball too much, making the shots a bit uncontrollable and unpredictable particularly in the wind (I play a often very windy course). So maybe getting that and a 5 wood instead of the 4 to increase a bit more the gap, would be good when I go to long courses... But that's not cheap for a sort of gamble.

I bought one and regretted it, it’s neither easier than a driver, nor any better than a three wood, save your money, and have a driver fitting if you need one, or take some lessons, it would be money better spent. Incidentally, I am otherwise a tailor-made fan. It is a triumph of marketing admittedly. Love your videos Hannah, thank you.
