🇺🇸 4Runner! Old , proven, made in JAPAN! I'd get ko2. But, would buy the 4runnner with locking diff. The ATrac saved my butt many times. Rav4 prime if your worried about mpg!
As a tip to save evenore money on gas, CONVERT your older 4x4 to run on propane! There are conversion kits as cheap as $1800 US with the tank! And since Propane is $1.25 USD a gallon in some parts you can save a bundle. The engine management system on any post-2005 can easy handle propane and it won't damage engine component AND since it's a cleaner burning fuel, your engine last even longer! My cousin has been running his 1995 Land Rover Discovery on propane since 1998 so 24 years later it's STILL going strong on the same engine! Many states and provinces offer rebates so the conversion becomes less than a few hundred bucks! Try propane!

No it hasn’t. It was an issue with supply that has been since fixed that is old news. Own a 2013 4Runner and I would love a bronco. Nothing wrong with new. Toyota become overrated and underwhelming
4Runner all the way. All that goodness plus all that longevity and reliability can’t be beat. Plus if it’s not a 40th anniversary edition, then you could get a trd off road for the same price and get that locker, and crawl control. Screaming deal. Great video guys, love the content
I always like it when you guys review a 4Runner. I think especially cool to have one without the locker and crawl control, stock tires - see how capable that setup really is. Thanks for the great video!
Start with a TRD OffRoad and you'll get a factory locker, multi-terrain select, and crawl control... for less money than the 40th anniversary. The 40th is significantly overpriced for what it is - an appearance package on an SR5.
For a closer comparison, the TRD Off Road Premium should have been used for this video. It has a rear locking differential, multi terrain select and crawl control. It also comes with better tires.
Great video guys. I have an 07 FJ with the 4.0 liter engine and the 5 speed auto transmission. I don't recall ever having trouble keeping up with traffic lol. It's not a power house though. TFL: "Let's compare a Bronco with lockers, advanced 4WD system, and all-terrain tires against a base SR5 with basic 4WD, street tires, no lockers, and an appearance package."
To adjust an old saying, "If you want to get deep into the wilderness, take a Bronco. If you want to get deep into the Wilderness and get home, take a 4Runner." My neighbor had a new Bronco up until it blew the "advanced" new turbo engine at 2700 miles.
This would be little more even comparison if the 4runner was an off road model. Then you get a rear locker, crawl control, terrain select and better tires. But still a great watch. I love them both.
Not really Apples to Apples. Any other 4runner 4wd/AWD would have done even better! The Limited AWD has a center lock in H4L with Atrac…and is hard to stop. The only drawback with the Limited is the approach angle. A different 4wd system in the 40th anniversary would have been nice!
While I enjoyed this video very much, a base Bronco (not Sasquatch) against this basic 4Runner (with fancy stripes) running the same tires would be interesting. Then the new tech on the Bronco would be even better highlighted for comparison. Thanks for the video!
This 4Runner is hella stylish. It's got all (ok, most of) the benefits of owning a brand new car plus a nostalgic old japanese SUV vibe. I love how raised it is even in this non-TRD trim.
@@ChrisWEEZ idk, I was actually talking about this latests model. This is not a TRD, and look how tall it is! Yes, tall to the body doesn't mean tall to the differential, but, come on, this thing looks sick! (or is it thick?😅😂)
Man, I love that 4Runner, I don't care how old the platform is. Also, Case is always styling and profiling in his shades and colorful pants. Adds some pizazz to the channel. Cool guy.
Wife's Ford Edge ST was at the dealer for over 7 months out of 9 for transmission failures. We had both a big boy Bronco(2.7L & Sas PKG) and the Sport as loaner cars since the dealer had tons sitting there not selling. In the end Ford pushed us away as customers so we ended up with a 2024 Toyota 4Runner Off-Road Premium in Underground. It's weird having the 4Runner surrounded by a Gen 3 Raptor and old OBS F-150. The 4Runner is old and slow, but we have more confidence that it'll still be on the road with minimal issues when compared to Ford's newer offerings.
Case is turning out to be a pretty good part of the team. I had my doubts at first but he brings his own swag and personality and fits in now nicely or by himself. Also plants had a lot to do with oil formation.
The 4Runner here and most Toyotas (most vehicles really) has two notches on the fuel door to hold the fuel cap while you are fueling so you don't scratch the vehicle. Probably not a big deal but good to know about.
i like the simplicity of A-Trac, instead figuring out which one of the 17 modes is gonna be most effective, i wish manufactures would use at least better intuitive mode explanations, or just simply few or 3 brake based awd aggressiveness settings plus slow throttle response control
I wish they’d let you tune your own maps. How quickly it engages, how much wheel speed differential it allows, how hard it applies brakes, with adjustable speed ranges so a single map can behave differential at 5 mph than it does at 25. Use a 1-10 scale for each of the parameters. State in the manual what the settings are for each of the standard presets as well as show them in the settings screen, and allow you to save a couple custom maps plus tweak any of the settings at any time.
Fun and beautiful vid. But if you want to differentiate these two you’re going to need a harder trail. Any veh with basic true four wheel drive could make it up that, as evidenced by both doing so without having to so much as touch any traction aids. Need a trail requiring articulation, with some bogholes, some boulders (dont have to be huge but something to get it twisted and requiring work to get over) and maybe some truly tight trails with some twisties. Still enjoyed it mucho. 🙂
I watch all your videos and love em guys.. but I will say that on this one, I was a little sad to not see some more obstacles/off-road trails in the video. Hoping you can put out another comparison between the two.

I have the SR5 Premium grade like the 40th you tested has. The best improvement is a decent set of tires. The nice thing about the SR5 Premium is that it can be purchased with a third row for occasional use. The better off road tech levels can’t be had with a third row.
I have a 2000 4Runner that we bought new. It has the 3.4 V6 with 240K miles. We drove it from KY to CO last summer and we did Engineer pass and Imogene pass and it crawled over everything in it's path with ease on an extremely wet trail. We wanted to do more trails, but the rain just wouldn't let up. I wonder if we will see a 2022 Bronco doing those trails in 2044?
@@1ShopSnipe The 3.4L V6 has a timing belt, not a chain. I replaced the belt and tension pullys at 100K and again at 200K. It is also recommended that you replace the water pump every time you replace the belt. I believe the 2.7L 4 cylinder Toyota engine has a timing chain. The chain shouldn't need replacing except on extremly high mileage engines where it could stretch over time and become loose.

Check for frame rust....true for all years. Also look for rust where the rear lower control arms attach to the frame. I would recommend an online search of 4Runner chat rooms and buyer's guides. I was on a waitlist for a Bronco but gave up and got a TRD Pro. Best choice for me as the 4Runner is a better fit for my needs. Bronco is cool though and ultimately can do more tech off road than the 4Runner can, but I am never going to be pushing the limits like that. Coming up on two years with my 4Runner and it has been a real workhorse with zero issues.
Why not compare the bronco against a TRD Pro or TRD Off Road that has more comparable equipment and a similar price point? Strange choice to use essentially an SR5 with an appearance package.
With the price difference, if someone put 15K of mods into a 4Runner it would out preform the Bronco always. With that said, I do like both. But I own a 4Runner.
If you got a bronco with less options at the same price as the 4 runner and put on 15k worth of mods, it would also do better than this bronco. It's almost as if factory options cost more than aftermarket mods... but mods also void your warranty and rarely add resale value
That 4Runner will be around for another 10 plus years the Bronco will be on 2nd or 3rd engine or transmission replacement if it’s still on the road 10years from now
I have owned hundreds of 2.7 ecoboost F150s for my business since they came out (large fleet we turn over every 3) and we’ve had next to zero issues with them. Hard to tell. The next gen could follow the Tundra with a turbo motor but keep body on frame architecture. I personally think it'll be okay for easy offroad terrain like the current gen. Lord knows they have cut it out of their production lines before. lol
@@WW-wf8tu The 747 has been discontinued because it doesn't make any economic sense to still produce it when more efficient A350s and feature rich Dreamliners are out there. Does it make sense to keep a 4runner that long? Absolutely not. With the price you spend for gas alone, You can get another car. Better, more efficient, safer cars are being launched every year, and you're better off with a new car every 10-12 or so years/250-300,000kms unless you are broke.
The comment about gasoline (oil) not being from Dinosaurs is spot on. Explains what many have known, but no one has acknowledged for decades - oil and coal is still being produced by the earth and there is a carbon cycle (albeit slower than the water cycle) making the push to electrify the fleet when battery technology is in its infancy a fools errand.
Really cool comparison! I’m a die hard Toyota fan, but vehicles from other manufacturers are getting better every year. Noteworthy: if you were doing a dollar for dollar comparison on these, that $16,000 could put a lift, better tires, front/rear bumpers and a rear locker on that 4Runner and for the same price as the Bronco, you’d have a bombproof reliable, VERY capable rig.
TBH, I'd take the 4Runner any day, every day, over the new Bronco. It has its drawbacks to be sure - I'd certainly change the tires - but beyond that, I choose rock-solid "ancient" mechanicals that are well-sorted over new fancy software-driven tech and a high compression forced induction motor.
Just depends how difficult your favorite trails are. Easy trails the 4Runner is fine. Once you start modding to get it like the Bronco it gets super expensive and becomes a complete dog with that engine.
@@mechmat12345 Yeah, the stock setup is good for me. I'm not into throwing 600lbs of crap onto my vehicles. I would change the tires and if it didn't have undercarriage protection, I'd add that - and that's about it.
Love your videos but I do believe that you should should upgrade the rear locker app rear lockers and put on appropriate tires to make the vehicles even when you carry them out so that there is a good choice of what goes on.
I heard what you said about how gasoline petroleum is formed this is what the geologist would have you to believe but in actuality they have found petroleum several miles deep and they no longer believe this is the process they believe the process is caused from the intense heat in the core of the earth That generates carbon based petroleum in the immense pressure pushes upward toward the surface of the earth the reason this is not talked about anymore is because this means there would never actually be a shortage of petroleum it is self generating although some forms of coal and oil and natural gas are formed from decaying matter obviously anything that is organic can revert back to its basic form I can’t prove this look it up
Along with this comparison you often don’t compare apples to apples. Either it should be a same priced vehicle and “Here’s what you get for the money” OR similarly equipped, lockers, tires etc., and take to places that can test the limits of the vehicle and then be, “Here’s what they can do, do you want to pay more/less for one or the other.”
Should've used 4runnner Trd Pro or Trd Off Road instead of the base SR5 Anniversary Edition. The 4runner used in this video is the "lesser off road 4runner" and still did great; this version is without crawl control and rear locker - but still kept up with the Bronco. What is the Bronco trim model in this video?
You guys make these videos every other week. Not just you other people as well. Stacking up the runner against all these brand new vehicles. Nothing has changed, we get it. But the runner is still the best vehicle all around. Jack of all trades truck. Well the Rubicon be a better rock crawler,? Sure. But most people daily drive these things, and the runner is great on and off-road, put a few thousand dollars into upgrades and this thing keeps up with anything and will last 10 times longer than anything else on the market. The runner is legendary, the bronco and all that stuff are not. Do they have some flashy gadgets, sure. That seems like what the majority want I guess besides reliability and durability and a better looking truck.... Would you buy a house That was just going to stand for a few years?
Glad you finally got out the back yard even if only for one run at the end of the season. But what happened to all your runs at Imogen, Black Bear Pass and even harder trails? Have you lost your love of real off roading; has Tommy moved on to other interests; or are manufacturers constraining you to more simple events?
First video that I've watched on the SR5 trim that went trailing as a stock model. I purchased a 2020 4Runner SR5 Premium 2 1/2 years ago. I chose the 4Runner for it's trouble-free ownership and longevity (I like to own vehicles for as many years as possible). But I had no idea that the 4Runner was this amazing real-life Stomper (4x4 toy when I was a kid 😂 ). I went online after buying it and joined the FB group and I hear everyone asking, "what tires / suspension / luggage rack / camping gear should I get???" haha I was shocked, shocked I tell you 🤣 So apparently I got the "mall crawler" package LOL because I use it to get my groceries and run to visit my family and friends. With only 9,500 miles on it, I'm hoping for it to last another 20 years 😁 Hope I made the right choice!
This is an interesting comparison. I look forward to seeing what the results of this episode. From the onset, it appears the Toyota may be the underdog a little bit in this comparison, equipped with the truck/street tires (Dude! You ain't got no business on the trails with them tires, yo!?) . But, then the 4Runner is still rocking a comparative package that it has enjoyed since it hit the market in 2010. There are previous owners that may have had 4 or more 4runners in that span of time. It's interesting that you should point out about the Ford re-engineering and "fixing everything wrong" with The International Harvester's Scout.
See who is still running in 5, no 10 years and a couple hundred thousand miles later. There are certain models of 4Runner that do have lockers and a real manual transfer case. Reliability is priceless.
Bought my 2016 Toyota 4Runner Trail new on Memorial Day Weekend 2017. I'll be taking it in for the 155,000 Mile Servicing on Monday. Over 5 years later, still can't see myself going with the other "options" when it comes to the mid-size SUV segment (other than the Lexus GX 😤😤).
@@Monkeyseemonkey79 Basically, you need to start running into obstacles where they start failing to get over them. Maybe a lot of people just plan on doing the type of offroading they did on this trip though, which means you also don't want the bronco with the huge tires. I'm kind of thinking about getting a Grande Cherokee with the understanding that its no rock crawler. It can tow a boat, go on dirt trails, and be a comfortable daily driver. My only problem is that I still really enjoy driving my 2015 GTI as a daily and think the Jeep will bum me out as a daily.

There are two paths to choose. 1. You buy the bronco, as you drive off the lot you feel the depreciation hit, a few miles down the road your engine explodes. Good thing it's under warranty and you only have to wait 11 months for a new crate engine from ford. 2. You buy the 4runner and you leave it to your favorite child in your will because the 4runner will outlast you.

If you don't care about long-term reliability, sure, you may not want an "outdated" drivetrain. But a 4Runner will have far less cost in maintenance and far outlive a new Bronco. Ford quality control is absolute crap these days.
With the extra cash you can: - get a TRF offroad/pro if you want, or - get some locking hubs, a lift, bigger tires, some skids, and a winch. And then kick the butt of most anything out there, for way more reliable kilometres
Sorry, I know the Toyota has a great reputation for reliability and durability. However, I am not able to overlook the archaic, underpowered engine with the 5 speed transmission. Even the interior, tech, and fuel economy are way behind best of class. I realize for this particular test the Bronco's fuel economy was worse but if you look at EPA estimates at a more comparable engine, tires, and trim - even the Bronco would have faired better. I looked at the 4runner last year but ended up with a '21 Grand Cherokee Trailhawk (the last year of the WK2 platform)- yes, that platform is older as well but has been updated over the years. Offered better tech, better mileage, more luxurious ride, better ground clearance, more power, better towing, std. A/T tires, and many other std. features - sunroof, power folding mirrors, front power seats, 4 heated seats, heated steering wheel, a modern 8 speed transmission, ELSD, etc. - many of which didn't come on the 4Runner. Reliability? - we'll see but I have a lot of confidence in the proven Pentastar engine with its bulletproof ZF 8 speed transmission.
I think the Grand Cherokee is a better all around SUV. Maybe doesn't have the full potential that a 4runner has offroad, but seems good enough. Its so great that jeep is ditching Chrysler transmissions in favor of ZF. Completely gives you confidence in buying a jeep.
Fast forward 10 years…..4Runner still performing perfectly. Bronco recycled 2 times and on its 3rd life. And that 10 speed transmission burns out because it is constantly searching and shifting for best mpg. Obviously I’m a bias 4Runner guy! Lol
I would have to say that the 4Runner is like a Veteran/Rookie! If Toyota had come out with a second gen competitor with more modern ammenedies, it would quite possibly be a major contender!
