Is the weather actually becoming more extreme? - R. Saravanan

Explore the differences between weather and climate - what they are, how we predict them, and what those predictions can tell us.
--
From 2016 to 2019, the world saw record-breaking heat waves, rampant wildfires, and the longest run of category 5 tropical cyclones on record. The number of extreme weather events has been increasing for the last 40 years, and current predictions suggest that trend will continue. So, is the increase in extreme weather due to random chance, or changing climate? R. Saravanan investigates.

@Sally Hope there are some studies that suggest that solar panels aren’t efficient enough to generate less net carbon emissions than when they are manufactured, especially in China. They also potentially hurt the earth through our mining and materials productions needed to make them. Wind is also inefficient and potentially harmful to ecosystems because birds hit them . Water is really going nowhere from what I can see and geothermal hasn’t been effective. However nuclear fission power produces much less carbon and the waste can be safely stored. Plus many countries are trying to be the first to make effective fusion reactors. So that is our best option.
@garybrown2039
@garybrown2039 4 года назад
@Hrishik Raj oh I know that everything has its ups and downs. I’m just saying some are better than others. Also fusion may be no easy goal but it also will be a gold mine for the energy industry and that’s why people are investing so much money into it. I also mentioned nuclear fission for a reason because I believe that’s our best option right now considering how much we’ve advanced when handling that type of waste.

Some simple things we can all do in everyday life: - Reduce your consuption of meat and dairy products - Prefer walking, bicycling and public transport - Save energy: take shorter showers, turn off lighting and electonics you don't need at the moment - Repair stuff, instead of buying new immediately - Recycle and only buy what you need ...and much more... I know not everyone can do everything, but most of these things are simple, and the cumulative effect of a lot of people doing small things will have a real effect on slowing down climate change. Also, I've noticed that showing example really makes people change their ways. I've definitely made lasting changes hearing what others are doing. We're pack animals and we wish to do what others do. We humans need a paradigm shift. If we play our cards right though, we'll eventually find solutuions, fix this mess and have a lush and clean planet where all the latitudes are habitable.

Hope sustains us and helps humanity make better choices. False hope is not good, nor is apathy, or complacency, or willful ignorance, but real hope is necessary. If we want to protect the planet and our future, we NEED hope. We must face the music with bravery and conviction, and we can only change things if we recognize the hope we can have.

The climate change we experience nowadays is not (only) cuz of the pollution right now, but its actually just the result of the past dacades' pollution which was much much worse. The climate change therefore will get even worse in the future thats why it has to be dampend right now.

I know there are people around the world who are aware of climate change accelerated by humans and are fighting to stop it, but I never hear about the results of these efforts. Did they work? Did they fail? Maybe TED-Ed could make a video on the world's progress toward mitigating the effects of climate.

Could TED Animations be translated into Spanish audio? This is such valuable information that could be really beneficial for non English speakers. Yes, subtitles are an option but some are not literate and could benefit from hearing the information and seeing the images.

Cleaning up the ocean is huge since that's where most oxygen is produced and water can absorb CO2 and other greenhouse gases. Plastic cuts off the water, reducing the area for gas exchange

A video titled "Is the weather actually becoming more extreme?" should discuss whether events we keep hearing about are accurate and if storms are worse than they were in the past. This video does not do that

Yes the climate is changing. Last winter in Europe, year 2019, was the hottest on record by like 2-3 or even 4 celsius above normal. Seems small but it is enough to make no snowfall large parts of western Europe, snow-free Christmas in Moscow ( usually it is -10 C on 25th December) and where I live in southeastern Europe in January we had 15 celsius while normally it should be at 3-4 and birds started to come and plants grew. And when clouds came they started to roar, thunder, and lightning could be seen. This is completely impossible to happen but global warming made it possible how hot the air was... . Once whole Europe was covered with dense forests and in the last 200 years we destroyed 95% of it. So climate change is definitely caused by us

In my area, near the Sierra Nevada Mountains, the temperature is actually getting colder and colder each year. Last year, the snow on the peaks lasted about 1-2 months longer than they usually do. idk why this is happening tho
@neonlight1214
@neonlight1214 4 года назад
@@aaronshan51 it is the weather. Global warming doesn't mean everywhere is getting hotter, some areas get colder while some much much hotter, some gett too much rain, some way too less. In my hometown in southeast Europe, there is a Mountain which has the word "white" in it. The name is "Bjelašnica" ( Bjela= white). And it's true. The peak of this mountain used to be covered with snow the whole year! And I have seen with my own eyes for years, every 5th year was snow-free but for a short time. Now it is getting so hot there the grass is literally dying out of drought, it is yellow and it can be fed to cows... And it has been happening for 3 years by my memory
