The Burbank Card Show reactions from Chris. Crowds, A/C, inventory, odors, etc. Did we find what we were looking for? Are Trout, Guerrero, and Acuna Undervalued? Overvalued? We share our thoughts.
You guys were looking for the right Vlad comparison and it’s literally Rafael Devers. Devers career 162 game pace: .282/.347/.517/.864 with 34 HR 107 RBI 3.9 WAR. Vlad career 162 game pace: .286/.362/.501/.863 with 32 HR 101 RBI 4.2 WAR. Both players had awesome starts to their careers, normalized a bit, now both having career years again
I really like shimmers! They're pretty and on top of that, if I can get a parallel of a card I want for less than the 'true' color, absolutely! Sign me up! (Great video, guys!)
Undervalued: Yordan Alvarez, Jose Ramirez, & Jose Altuve (even though I don't like Altuve lol) Overvalued: Every prospect in the checklist when Bowman comes out every yr haha!! Great vid guys!! Keep it up!!
Another great show guys. If anyone thinks there's a sliver of land that Brian Cashman would be safe on if he doesn't sign Juan Soto, then those individuals should get drug tested. Cashman's ONLY mission this offseason is Juan Soto. No Juan Soto = him not safe in NYC. Soto leaving is really concerning if you know NYC based Yankee fans.
Chris here - its absolutely remarkable that Cashman still has the Yankees GM job. I mean, its been a full decade of near complete incompetence. I will say about Soto - it's not really up to Cashman. Soto will test the market and take the best offer back to the yankees. It's up to ownership to match it. Right?
@SpitballinCards THANK YOU Chris! And yes, you're 100% correct on Soto, as he should! Here in NY, we're sick of hearing Micahel Kay every afternoon on his show, saying that Cashman would be unemployed for 5 minutes if fired. He's a masterclass in failure at the GM level and destroys the value of his prospects. How? Because he's forced to bring them up because old , broken players get hurt and they struggle. Name one home-grown success story that he drafted besides Judge. I'll be over here watching this Kentucky bluegrass grow in my front yard while you think of one. Love you guys bro, keep up the great work!!!
@@SpitballinCards not to 'excuse' him, but game is also changing...less so than 3000 hits, but to me the path to 500 is starting to look harder and harder
@@willzsportscards You're exactly right. I can't compare him to griffey because endured injuries and still put up incredible counting stats. Not sure where trout will finish up, but we're all hoping he can put a few more full seasons together. Just not sure whats possible now.
I don't think Vladdy's last year really that bad. He had an xBA of.299 (96%)and an xwOBA of .378 (94%). Even though he didn't have a great year, he still had a 118 wrc+. Any interest in a rookie year 2019 autographed game used Vlad Jr game used bat?
I realize Vlad’s numbers compare to Freddie and Eddie Murray at this point through their careers, but neither Freeman nor Murray had to be out on diets when they were 22. That’s not a good sign. At all. The excess fat he carries around will slowly damage his knees and back. His closest comp would be Prince Fielder IMO.
Guys you rock.....Give us one, just one episode where you rip open.... 😮😮😮 a pack of cards, it would be epic. Everyone picks one product, one pack, and let's degeneracy rule!
Devers to Vlad Jr is a good comparison. I drove 9 hours to attend the Burbank show on Saturday. Was happy to acquire some PC cards. I made a trade to get a 68 Milton Bradley Ryan PSA 4 rookie. Also bought a couple of cheap Kobe cards. It was indeed crowded with people and some dealers were high priced but others were fair. I also sold a few cards so I actually left with more money than I came in with.
Hello Guys,Another Great Video, I have Soto Nationals autograph cards Topps and Panini/25 BGS and a 2018 National Treasures 1/1 8.5/10,do I hold on him because of his Age,hold in General until he Retires, wait to see if the Yankees pick him up for a Bigger Contract or sell now before he gets Traded to a Lower End Team? Thanks for your Feedback
Thanks for watching! Chris here - IMO Soto most likely landing spots are Yankees, Mets and Giants. Will the Yankees match the offers he gets from those two teams? Do they need to match exactly or would Soto rather play out his career in pinstripes? It's hard to know. He's definitley seemed like a money first guy because hes refused extensions everywhere he;'s been. But if he goes to the Giants or even the mets, his card market takes a big hit. Soto holders need him to stay in pinstripes and that's best for his legacy as well. You;d think he knows that. But we'll have to find out. Re: his cards, a big October could be a great selling window. But honestly, I don't have great advice for you. If he stays with the Yankees his cards will jump because his future is set. That's all we feel comfortable saying haha
Chris here - this is spot on. Graet call. Both started young and have compiled quite a bit. Devers just a couple years older, so Guerrero has the lead in counting stats. I'd love to see Guerrero end up in Boston in 2026.
Great stuff, as usual. That Soto vs Ohtani trade is a doozy. I think I land on the Soto end but hard to go wrong there. Sounds like I need to go to Burbank! One of the few times I hard disagree with someone - there’s no way the Angels can offload Trout right now without eating the majority of that contract. They also still have Rendons terrible contract so it’s going to be a long time before that franchise has real financial flexibility. Keep up the good work!
@@PhilthyCards Chris here - I almost wish we’d stayed to watch and see if was completed. You’re right on trout. Just no real value right now. How many jerseys could the Phillies sell??
I went to the Burbank show, or should we start saying west coast card show😂 lol. I was suprised how many nice cards were there, based on what my buddies told me I expected to see more lower value cards for cheap, but instead it seemed like all the vendors had low end priced way higher than it should have been, besides like 1 or 2 of them. I ended up spending way more than I planned on, but I ended up with 4 amazing pop 1 none higher cards, between PSA and BGS, and am super happy with the pickups. My rarest one being a Langford BGS 10 sapphire selections Orange /25 for $1k. Also how you mentioned a lot of people in the Beckett line at the show, I noticed so many more Beckett fans at the show than I expected. Ive always personally loved autos in BGS slabs, and base in PSA slabs due to look, cost, and grade scales. I even had a vendor tell me PSA is f****** r******* before I even said a word about either company. I do wonder if we are on the verge of a PSA collapse, it seems collectors in the mass want better grading than PSA supplies, at least for high end cards
Nice pick up on that Langford. what were the other 3 pop 1's? Chris here and I dont think a PSA collapse is coming any time soon. Just check sales prices on cards in BGS/SGC slabs vs the same card in a PSA slab. Sure grading can be EXTREMELY frustrating sometimes, but bang for your buck - PSA still the way to go.
@SpitballinCards I got a 2022 Trout /25 BGS 10, 2024 Evan carter auto /10 PSA 10, and a 2024 langford sapphire /99 PSA 9 with no 10's, and a bunch of 8's graded below. I think PSA will stay in control for a while, but they have been taking over the market little by little, but I do wonder if that will stop, and they'll start to loose market at some point, simply because collectors prefer another company. The two PSA pop 1 slabs I picked up a 10 for around 25% more than raw value, so I knew some of the people at that show whom even had PSA slabs, hated PSA at that show. I even talked with a flipper or two and they like BGS a lot more because of the upside of a BGS 10 and BGS black label being so much more valuable, sure they are rare, but they also evaluate the cards before sending them in, so often times it's not as rare or random as you think, and they can send in the flawless ones to flip for more
I think Acuna is a buy all day. No risk no reward. I bought heavy into Soto during his time in San Diego, and bought Ohtani when he first got hurt. Both paid off well enough to more than offset a few losers I missed on. I try to have a much longer time horizon than most people seem to, at least on RU-vid.
Man, I feel so bad about Trout, but Phil has a good read on the market... down in the short term, maybe up in the long term. I don't have too much invested in Trout, but am thinking of picking up some fun cards!
I enjoyed the Burbank Show, even though I didn’t buy anything this time around there were quite a few cool cards, I just wasn’t able to work out a deal on any of them that I was happy with. However, it was the best show for me in regards to selling, so me and my wallet were pretty happy about that.
Came across the channel the other day and have been binging! Love the content you guys put out. Tons of value. Question for you guys. How long would you wait to buy Judge from right now?
@@SpitballinCards Thanks for the reply! I just sold a 1/1 Michael Harris rookie auto for $1000. I'm consolidating my collection to go all in on Yankees players (diehard lifelong Yanks fan) and want to go after a solid Judge card. Is my best bet to save up until I can get something like his gold /2017, black /67 or heritage auto?
The Burbank show was great... Alot more and better cards than the last show... Lots of people wheelin and dealin. The Exquisites went fast... Can't wait til the next one..
I think Trout staying on the Angels is better for his cards and career. If he bounces back and puts out 5 solid years @3-4WAR with "hopefully" (1 or 2year) @5-7WAR peak (obviously not his early years) his cards will bounce back. The cherry on top would be playoff appearances. But he is the equivalent of Griffey to Mariners - Gwynn to Padres - Banks to Cubs - Dimaggio/Ruth/Gehrig/Jeter etc to the Yankees. - Cobb/Kaline to TIgers - Robinson/Koufax to Dodgers etc and so on.. Every organization should be so lucky to have a player of this caliber as the face of the franchise. (Plays the game right/Works Hard/Gives back & donates his time/Makes headlines for the right reasons and not the wrong (injuries can't be helped). (The dude brought back the hype in baseball cards since 2012). If this happens long term his cards will only rise in value over time. He's a generational player (jersey #27 is already retired) lol ... Good discussion. Btw green refractors are great (imo) #/99 makes it relevant. At one point orange was retail now they are lowered serial# than gold lol? Orange is great for Giants/TIgers but they don't pop more than green lol (just my opinion) . Anyway guys enjoyed this episode 👍👍. I like it when a show gets you fired up! Food for thought
Thanks for watching and commenting! Chris here - with Trout, I wish i could share your optimism but his body is just betraying him. 5 solid years seems impossible to imagine right now. Hopefully it isnt. We all want to see him play 140 games again. But will we? Did he do enough to stay in people's minds? Because a playoff appearance with that roster and the amount of money wasted on Rendon every year seems even more impossible.
I PC Bobby Witt JR and I recently purchased his 2022 topps glided non auto raw for 230. Is this a good investment card ? Only /199 made and pretty unique card and set
Chris here - I've seen some Gilded cards and they look great. High quality control and nice cards. However, I havent bought any of them yet because the set has no history. Maybe it takes off and Topps continues making it. Maybe Gilded is the new Sapphire. But not yet it isn't. Id hesitate to call any card a "good investment card" but a card from a new set just can't fit the definition. Closest cards Witt has to "investment cards" are his 2020 Bowman Chrome Autos. But generally be careful out there and remember - Just because something is numbered doesn't mean its rare, and just because something is rare or autographed doesn't mean its valuable. Not everything rare, numbered or auto'd will have demand. The hobby is very confusing these days. I hope this was helpful. I think Gilded has a chance to catch on and stick around but you just never know. Feel free to reach out with any questions and I'll be happy to answer if I can. @baseballcardaddict on instagram
Great points on Acuna. Just depends on how much you like him as a player and how much performance risk you’re willing to accept. Separately, I’d take the Ohtani over the Soto. Easier to say that now based on recent developments lol.
I've had bad interactions with 7th inning on ebay. Agreed to a price on a card and he did not go through with the sale. That was like the second or third negative interaction. (If it were a one time event, I would just bite my tongue here.) Anyway, his loss, I won't be buying any big cards from him, ever. 5:40, as Scott added, it's just a variant of loss aversion. Makes sense, millions of years of hunting and gathering to survive will make one's species keen on not 'losing horded stuff'. Chris---my two cents on greens...they're okay when a player gets hot and his other stuff becomes (more) scarce....but when the player's market cools off, that takes the biggest hit. If you're a timer/flipper, then go for it. But like Scott said, I'll just wait for an Ohtani blue. That said, I didn't know you four were such Christmas haters!
Chris here - I'm surprised to hear that. And I hope it wasn't one of the cards I bought from him person! Also, you're smart to move on after a couple bad experiences.
@@SpitballinCards Yeah. Agreed on a price. I sent the counteroffer. Not accepted. Which is okay I guess, but just got ghosted. No response. You treat your higher end customers like that? It WILL come back and bite you long term.
I have a question for you guys about WAR. Should you really look at WAR. Wouldn't Mookie Betts have a higher WAR if he was playing SS instead of RF? The Dodgers must think they're a better team with him at RF since they switched him back
The Burbank Show was disappointing. A lot of good dealers that were there last year didn't return. Seems they were replaced with Pokémon. Less vintage than the previous year.
@@661fish4 Chris here - as strictly a baseball collector, I did notice a lot of Pokémon, F1, and WWE, but honestly i don’t know if my brain or eyes could handle 500 tables all selling baseball! You pick up anything?
Really, I saw alot of vintage. Seemed like more to me than last time. I was there on Friday and Saturday. Definitely way more sportscards than Pokémon.
@SpitballinCards a few things on Friday. Last year, there were dealers from Chicago that had monster stuff. They weren't back. It was still a great show but to me, last year was way better.
Been slowly picking up some Vladdy over the past 4 months. Just always liked his fun demeanor. Acuna is tough. I also liquidated about half my Acuna’s. Having said that. I am still tempted to buy back in bc the talent is so special. lol
For a first show after coming back to the hobby in January 2024, i thought the show was great. I was pleased at the diversity of both buyers and sellers. Rare coins lacks diversity. Im a 60+ yr old white guy and enjoyed the interactions and a shared knowledge base with 25 yr old hispanic and black kids. May sound weird, but that part of the experience meant a lot to me. I was dissappointed at the dearth of bowman chrome 1st autos and topps chrome rc andbthe ones that were prominently displayed like merrill or chourio were at 1.5x comp. Or conversely players whose value is drfiniely trending down like Acuna. Players who i was willing to pay comp were nowhere in sight. Food trucks were xlnt. And comfort level on the floor was good - ac, space to move and dealers were at their tables for the most part.
I enjoyed the Burbank show, would have liked to see more vintage dealers. Most of them had their cards well over comps. MO’s collectibles was wheeling and dealing selling vintage cards at fair prices. Can’t wait until the next show.
it’s so funny to hear you guys talk about the bryce harper topps chrome red rookie auto because im the guy who got that card from eric in a trade at 5k value. I didn’t even bother to lowball him because I’ve done plenty of trade with eric before and he’s always reasonable
The smart thing to do is to just go for the trade night. Don't waste your time getting tired during the day and be fresh for rhe trade night to get good trades.
There is a world where trout never plays a full season again and I mean playing 20-40 games. If that happens and considering he will never win anything what does that mean for his cards?
