What if there was no such thing as bad sounding music? Maybe our opinion of music is conditioned by the sounds we're exposed to.

"Stop that noise! Many creatures, such as human babies, chimpanzees, and chicks, react negatively to dissonance-harsh, unstable, grating sounds. "In Western styles of music, from classical to pop, some combinations of notes are generally considered more pleasant than others. To most of our ears, a chord of C and G, for example, sounds much more agreeable than the grating combination of C and F# (which has historically been known as the "devil in music")."

Metal has been using dissonance for forever. A bunch of core genres loved using "sour chords" to create a chaotic spastic sort of feeling, especially back in the mid 2000's.
@EmazingGuitar
@EmazingGuitar 8 лет назад
Metal can pull it off because every instrument has a high output and drains out some sound and tone from each other, in a pop song the "instruments" (bullshit computer program) doesn't have a very high output and everything is fabricated to sound catchy, so dissonance doesn't sound pleasant in a pop song that isn't recorded at high volumes
@VampireHeart518
@VampireHeart518 8 лет назад
Well, firstly, metal songs provide context for dissonance, and in their test there was no context. Secondly, metal can be something of an 'acquired taste' and it takes being familiarised with it to like it. Which is the main point here: our conditioning / background & what we are truly familar with are a big factor in us liking or not liking 'a' music
@dustypartition
@dustypartition 8 лет назад
Almost all sub-genres of metal use dissonance, known in the scene as "Death Chords", and us metalheads GO NUTS when used in the right places, like in breakdowns. We love that discordant "ugliness". It's friggin brutal! Not to mention that a lot of other dark or "emo" genres use it. I think it's a kind of progressive way to make music and a useful tool to have in any musician's toolbelt. Sure, most people might not like dissonance on it's own, but I think musicians and music-nuts out there would probably agree that it's a powerful, emotion inciting tool. NOW BRING THA MOTHA FUCKIN RUCKUS.

This is probably a joke but there's a biological reason for that. It's not only an unpleasant noise, but our brain has evolved to make us feel uncomfortable and sometimes even painful when a baby cries so that we would take care of it and make it shut up.

I personally love dissonance and I think that's partly due to a very heavy music education, especially with classical Western music. a lot of classical music includes dissonant chords as part of the "story" of the piece, so to speak. Given the findings in this video, I have to assume that I enjoy dissonance more than the average person because of my education and how much more exposure I've had to beautiful dissonant music.

This is very interesting. I play multiple instruments and genre of music. with that said, I use a lot of diminished chords and scales that "aren't used in music" for rock and metal songs. It is true that they aren't used often but I love how different they sound. They're just another color on my palette.

Middle eastern music uses quarter tones that can sound odd or disonant to westerners. But I think they're absolutely gorgeous in the right places. It gives a special edge and adds dimension. I think exposure has a lot to do with it. But beauty still might have a formula.

To make good music, you don't need to use loops that everybody use to get more likes in what you make, to make good music, you gotta have imagination, to imaginate a melody in your head and to sucess to find the melody, this is what I do, but I don't make good music, I'm just 14, I make experimental music, you gotta have a lot of years of experience to make good music and to forget the idea to do "music" like David Guetta or a lot of famous "artists" who makes shitty music with the loops they bought or they downloaded, cause these "artists" will be forgotten in 10 years cause they make shitty music, and cause it's not original at all. I'm sorry if I make mistakes on my comment, but I'm a french boy who explains what's the real music, the real music is the music you make from nothing to a full good song and you make a good song when you have hard worked on a melody, on a bass... Good music isn't present in the shitty pop you hear everydayl, good music is the song where you can hear something original and good.

There's still questions that can't be explained by that. Like why some kids grow up around modern music but eventually get into older music, or why some songs just last centuries, especially if we haven't heard anything like it before. Music is one of those things I don't think science can truly figure out.

There is a modern art movement known as expressionism, which is very popular in music for wind/concert bands because there are so many different instruments that have different sounds, color, texture, etc. John Mackey wrote a song named "Aurora Awakes", which is about the northern lights during dawn. The songs sounds just like that, gloomy and dark at first, but then bright and full of energy eventually. Another one of his songs named "KIngfishers Catch Fire" is very similar, but the theme is different. How does the music do this?

Actually dissonance is what makes some music good, especially artistic music. Consonance may be the basis of good music, but when you just stick to consonant chords, you just end up with same (and as result: boring) music, simple pop is playing with for our whole lifetime. Dissonance makes real emotions, even simple minor triads have dissonance in physical sense.

Am I the only one that thinks the youngins don't understand what good music really sounds like? I mean most of the newer generation music just sounds stupid to me. I like the stuff from the 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s, and some early 2000s. I grew up in the 90s and early 2000s and my parents are the earlier generations and I was regularly exposed to their generation music as well as my generation music while growing up. So maybe that has something to do with-it. My mom on the other can't get enough of the newer stuff. Has anyone else noticed this? Also because of _Meez_ the genre I hate the most is rap, and if you ever played _Meez_ you'd understand why. There are exceptions to that rule and there are some rap songs and artists that I do like, but most rap music I hate because of that game. So there's that to think about. Great video. Keep up the good work.

Good video but as someone who has studied both music and physics at a level, I would like to point out though that there are plenty of chords that feature diminished intervals and beating which still sound nice to the ear. Music theory can be learned and taken for granted, but a knowledge of physics brings to light the extent of how complicated the subject is. Dissonance isn't always bad in music, used right it is one of the most important tools in writing interesting music however the music that makes its way to the radio and mainstream media is often child's play compared to music written by people who are extremely knowledgable in music theory, the cognitive ease due to the lack of dissonance in trash music is why it is often popular.

I wondered about what is the worst sound. I think modern music may be a good candidate for me personally. I hate that music so much I try to stay away from it. Katy Perry is my pet peeve. You mention Taylor Swift. I have heard of her, but haven't heard her. Out of curiosity I looked her up. I learned that she did the song "We are Never Ever Getting Back Together". I listened to the song. It sounded like ear rape. There is no way from the Stairway to Heaven to the Highway to Hell that I am going to like it. It wouldn't matter how many times I hear it. I would not like it. I can make myself feel better by listening to something better. I am an oldies person. I have recently bought a Paul McCartney solo CD. It is really good. I listened to "Too Much Rain" to help me feel better. That is a much better song. It has a nice melody and it sounds so soulful. I can't give a technical explanation as to why it is a better song. It just sounds a lot better. Another good candidate is high pitched sounds. These are things like sirens and nails scratching on chalkboard. That aversion is likely hardwired. Monkey used a high pitched alarm call. So the monkeys that were sensitive to it were better able to prepare for danger. In a way people can still give an alarm call, regardless of spoken language. It is just called a scream. If you are doing more episodes on sounds, that would make an interesting topic.

That is interesting. Consonence sounds like a major key. Dissonence sounds like a minor key. The C to G more specifically is like the C major chord, C E G. The C minor chord is C Eb G. I prefer to call the dissonent notes C to Gb. It is my little nitpick not to call the second note F#. Major keys dominate our music. So that is probably why consonence is so well liked. Personally I like the minor keys. Maybe I'm just weird that way. :P

I am getting hooked on the Eagles. I am loving their song "Hotel California".

@yoianrhodes

so for the idea that your ear can't tell the difference, that is so far from the truth. so when a note is played you will get a sound that is a certain frequency. now let's say we have the same note played at the exact inverse of the first note. if perfect they would cancel each other out, but if we play 2 notes very close in pitch they will constantly clash together and like the inverse will become quiet and loud. this is the 'beating' not that we can't tell the difference between C and C#

I guess exposure is a big factor, but there are definitely exceptions. I generally have a large preference to music that utilizes a large amount of dissonance, despite being raised in Western culture. Almost all consonant music contains a small amount of dissonance anyway, most commonly in the V7 and vii° chords. Consonant chords just tend to be "immediately rewarding" to the ear (at least in a lot of cultures).

All the subtitles beyond the 04:17 mark are a mess thus making the the video difficult to comprehend to a hard of hearing person.

Good music is totally subjective. For instance if you usually listen to rap and hip hop you most likely will not enjoy genres such as metal(including sub), post hardcore and alternative music in general.

the worst sound I can think of: an out-of-tune piano trying to play something that resembles consonance ;) please tune that piano--it was beating on C-G

@ 1:53, the word amusia should be not be pronounced ah-musia, it's ey-musia, as in amoral, or asymmetric. The a ('ey') prefix means non, or not in these word forms.

syncronizations but. u need to know lots of psychology, to be oVery open minded. the negative thoughts an be good too, to provoke u.. i ve measured musics and i have formula for temperature, time, beats.. how much time of one good = equal to one bad, for mAXIMUm motivation during runs. Theres difference if u want healthy life, or spritn life which can be(well not exactly traumatizing, but in a way more negative. not so biorhytmic/optimal, but if u want good race result.) in the end music is just for energy mostly anyway, well we often more relax but priority is to get motivational music first.. need looots of own remixes. i combine 4-5 musics together usualy liste n to 15musicstogether using winamp when i was onwindowsxp but have changed to windows 7recently and i use windows live moviem aker to make the music then extract the audio from the video.. if u want message me n i can explain more
