Life after death? Is it a thing in Zen? Kinda? Not really? It's a tricky question, which I attempt to unpack in this video with a little help from my dead teacher. It's not quite like he visited me from the beyond for this video, but I do recount some of the lessons he gave me during the final few years of his life on how to die. He called this the Death Activity, and it was a crucial part of the Zen practice that he taught us. "You must die into every moment," he would say, "and then a new self and a new moment is born." Whereas the Christianity of my youth emphasized faith in an afterlife, Zen emphasizes trust. Trust in the mutually opposing activities of life AND death which give rise to this whole cosmos, including us.
PS -- I shot a second part to this video which I'll put up some time next week. Peace, my beloved, intrepid, bold, unique, and everlovin' YouTubians!
